View Full Version : Hype Deathmatches 3: Round 2 Match 8: Wilhelm-Scream vs. Matt
Erzengel
04-23-2007, 08:50 AM
Welcome to Hype Deathmatch 3! I am carrying on the legacy left by Toven. I also like to wish her luck on her way to Miami with her newly shaven head.
To you newcomers, what are the Deathmatches? Well, they are a list of all the popular posters, mostly from the Hype Community Thread. Most of the players are picked from the first 5 pages of the Members List, well known posters/posters with high post counts/mods/trolls etc. Don't be discouraged, there's always Hype Deathmatch 4.To sum up, this is a popularity contest.
Each match will get its own thread and last 2 days. Whichever poster has the highest votes gets to move on to the next Round.
Multiple votes by the same user on different names is not allowed.
Game Outline:
Round 1: 60 players/ 24 matches => 24 winners move onto Round 2.
Round 2: 24 players/ 12 matches => 12 winners move onto Round 3.
Round 3: 12 players/ 6 matches => 6 winners move onto Round 4.
Round 4: 6 players/ 3 matches => 3 winners move onto Final 3-Way Match.
Final 3-Way Match: 3 players/ 1 match => 1 winner
Sounds confusing but it isn't, if I can figure it out..anyone can. :up:
----------

There will only be 2 matches going on at once.

I've reached out to two of the most powerful fanbases on the Hype. The Superman Forumers (These are the guys who can fill up a thread about a letter from an intern with 300 posts in 30 minutes) and the Spider-Man Hypesters...who if they are anything like my time spent there during the Organic Debates will be powerful allies. Now all I can do is watch how it plays out.

It's all speculation based on the ambiguous description from novelization--which--as history has consistently bore out--could mean nothing when the film actually comes out. FOX is supposed to still be "working" on it. Keep hope alive! :csad:

I used to enjoy the Death Matches when you were judged by your peers.
That's where the drama came from. I see neither pain nor pleasure in losing by a handful of votes harvested from people I've never known who frequent boards I'll never even visit.
Matt knows I'm the superior poster, and more well-loved by far.

I'm glad my SOS has not fallen on deaf ears.
It was a desperate move...I admit.
Where nothing about this match stirs a feeling even remotely akin to "desperation" in me.
At this point you aren't only voting for me, you are voting against Morg. Therefore all those who feel oppressed by him vote for me!
But this....tsk...I can think of 10 people off the top of my head that would come and vote if they knew about this, giving me a lead...but I'd feel SO pathetic if I did that.
It's just not in my nature.
So enjoy your victory, Matt.

For the record, most of the comments you cited were jokes. The act of "desperation" was reaching out to the subforums. Just because they do not post in community does not make them any less members of the Hype. The people you listed are regulars in both the Spider-Man and Superman forums. If this is a peer evaluation as you argued, then these are my peers, as I do frequent the Superman boards and have lurked in the Spider-Man board with occassional posting for the past 2 years while being a regular in them prior to that. Therefore that makes them my peers and their votes are just as valid. If anything should be questioned, it is you for taking this so seriously. Its just a game, Wilhelm. And again I ask, why take part in this game, if not with the intention to compete to win. Lighten up, buddy.

If we are to liken this to politics, I would compare you to a candidate running for President who is only known in one state and only campaigns in one state. You claim to be more popular...but outside of Community and Misc Film on occassion, who do you converse with on the Hype? There are probably close to 1,000 ACTIVE hypesters...maybe 100 in Community. Last I checked these are HYPE Deathmatches, not Community. Therefore voters from the Spider-Man forum and the Superman forum are just as valid.

He starts taking shots at me, and frankly...I'm not sure why.LOL, Oh my God Matt, you're seeing my comments through the wrong prescription. :(
I never said you cheated 'cause you didn't cheat. It's really lame that you can say stuff jokingly or in a less than serious way but I can't. :whatever:
If you'll recall, I didn't "start taking shots at you when I started to lose". :o
I started taking shots at you when I began to read your posts that weren't dealing with politics (I agree with most of your thoughts on politics), specifically when you said the retarded thing about the Beatles, which Erz referenced in the title of our match. :huh:
I never once said you "cheated", 'cause you didn't. You won!
The only reason I even posted my last post yesterday was because I hate people who vocally enjoy winning and then when they're not winning they just act like they don't care anymore and disappear...like all the Christians I've debated who are super-mouthy and confident and then when I destroy their point, they disappear instead of saying "wh00ps, I suck."
I didn't want people to think I was doing that so I explained that the reason I don't care about the Death Matches anymore is not because I was losing to a douchy-weasel (I have lost to douchier weasels) or because I was losing at all (of course I've lost before, 'cause I've never gone all the way and I was happy to lose to the likes of DOG LIPS, etc.), but because when it started out, regardless of the name "Hype Death Match", I knew everyone who was voting, because it was Community people who knew about it and were voting.
I'm not interested in last ditch attempts at appealing to total strangers. To me that would be the definition of "taking it too seriously", lol.
I don't go anywhere else but Community, so of COURSE it's going to be more fun for me when it's all people I know involved, 'cause it's not like the Olympics where a Spaniard can meet a Samoan for the first time and fairly compete in the same sport. It's based on your history of posting. (I never saw it before as a competition based on how prolific a poster you are, or how broad your comicbook interests are, but instead on the quality of your posts, and I have always hated, for instance, people who say a movie "sucks" when they haven't even seen it.)
Then it has some kind of meaning which makes it more fun, like, "OMG, Darthphere, you b****. I can't believe you didn't vote for me! :cmad:" instead of "Oh no. "Forever is over" didn't vote for me!" Duh :huh:
But, after the match started, Erz took a poll to see if it should be Community Battles, or Hype-wide, and most people wanted Hype-wide, at which point I said, "Whelp, I can't compete anymore if it's Hype-wide, 'cause I literally don't/won't post anywhere but Community. *shrug*"
It all seems pretty obvious and reasonable to me, lol *shrug*
We don't know eachother that well, so you probably don't remember that I always speak with a grandiose Dr. Doom-like tone in the Death Matches.

I believe you disqualified Web Slinger's vote...but consider this...he has been here 5 years....and has a low post ratio...have you thought that perhaps he comes by Hype way for the release of the Spider-Man movies, gets it out of his system, discusses them, and leaves? That is the way I occupy the Spider-Man forums. Why can't he? A few of those members seem to have their presence timed out with the release of Spider-Man.
Last I checked, this was open to any Hype member...not just Hype members who post a lot. If they aren't duplicates, why should they be disqualified?
Also, regarding Thecomicbookkid, He IS a regular in the Superman forum. Because he registered 8 months ago is the reason that his post average is so low, but he has posted in the Superman forums AT LEAST 3 days for the past 3 months and almost daily for awhile now. To disqualify his vote is grossly unfair to him.
Also, I'd just like to thank all my voters, I came in this round expecting to get beat like a redheaded step child, but you guys really did rally for me and I do appreciate it alot. Again, thank you :)

When the voting is this close, yes I do check on some names and the ones that I think are fishy, low post count, I discredit. I would have done the same for anyone else.

But I just explained to you how comicbook kid is a valid poster. Therefore, do you not think it fair to reinstate him?
And for the record, I did not accuse you of biases. I accused you of not accurately checking a poster's history. You looked at their registration compared to their posts per day, but that is hardly a fair judge. It should be taken into account how active they have been lately. Many posters register months before they become active members of the Hype.
If only there was a way to gain finacially from the hype contests.. If only... I'd be a rich man, on a nuclear powered yatch manned by monkies...

At this point I am accusing you of bias or at least stubbornness. I am not simply vouching for him, if you check his post history (which only takes a click of his name) you can see how active he has been over the past 3 months. Considering that, I do not see how you can in good faith disqualify him.

That's been my point for several weeks now...a Hypester is a Hypester--it shouldn't matter where he spends the majority of his time posting on this website.
Yet it continues to be an issue for some.
When the voting is this close, yes I do check on some names and the ones that I think are fishy, low post count, I discredit. I would have done the same for anyone else.
But how do you determine "fishiness"? And what do low post counts have to do with their ability to vote? I would think a poster's daily presence would be a bigger factor. These rounds only go for 3 days. If these people are voting it means they have to already lurking here on a daily basis to even be aware of the contests in the first place.

LS, I've done the Hotties thread using the same principles as I do now.
You have people here for over 2 years with like .15 posts a day? I stand by my decision.
What if Scarlet Spidey or Green Goblin voted for me? Would their votes count? They are well known Hype posters but haven't posted regularly for 3 years...but still, they are well known...they have high post counts, do they count? I can get disqualification of duplicates. I can get not counting people who registered to vote, but to say someone like ComicbookKid doesn't count is ridiculous.
LS, I've done the Hotties thread using the same principles as I do now.

I'd like better clarification about ComicbookKid. He registered 8 months ago and his post per day average is low because he only started posting actively recently. Countless hypesters have taken months to post following their registration. You can see how active he has been over the past 3 months and yet you refuse to acknowledge it. Do you not see how that comes off as biased?

LS, I've done the Hotties thread using the same principles as I do now.
You have people here for over 2 years with like .15 posts a day? I stand by my decision.
But again, post count does not determine activity.
I can see everyone who is active on this site--even those who are "invisible". And you know what I've observed? Some may not post often but they are here every damn day and know certain Hypesters just as well as those who converse publicly.
Case in point: In one Hero forum there was a female user who didn't say jack. EVER. And she was always "invisible" to her peers. But I'd see her in my little screen on a daily basis. Every. Damn. Day. She'd spend hours reading all the threads, voting on all the various polls, but still didn't say anything publicly. So naturally she surprised me when--after several months of zero participation--she decided to break her silence by PMing me with a concern she had about a certain problematic poster. I was shocked to learn that she was very well-versed in knowing every fricking personality in that forum. She had studied us--and our behavior--by reading our posts, arguments, etc. over the course of a year. A year Erz.
Now, if she was invited to a Deathmatch involving any of those posters, she'd be just as qualified to vote for them because she knows who they are--and well I might add--even though her post count is in the double digits.
But according to your standards, you'd disqualify her vote? :confused:
X-Chick
04-25-2007, 12:55 PM
Listen sister, I disqualified votes in other matches previously. :cmad:
Votes were thrown out in the Superman79/SB battle right?
X-Chick, I'll gladly hand the win to Matt. I seriously can't compete if we're allowing posters who don't even post once a day. But to be fair, I have seen Erz disqualify votes in the other matches, Mmkay?
If you say it's "suddenly in this match votes get disqualified" you're just wrong, showing a clear Anti-Wilhelm bias.
That match was unimportant so I paid no attention to it. I've been known to post less than once a day, or once a month even, maybe you should disqualify my votes too. :cmad:
This argument is still going on :confused:
I already stated my reasoning for ComicbookKid. Like I said, there's a line. I allowed quite a few "newbies" with less posts than CBK that joined this very month.
And it's not like I just declared Wil the winner. It's a tie.
It has nothing to do with the results, I just don't understand how you can marginalize someone like that who is clearly an active poster. You said there has to be a line, I agree. But why is it an ACTIVE POSTER who posts ATLEAST once a day does not pass your standard?

Then why make this poll public and just let everybody's vote count? The reason I discount votes first and foremost is because I'm trying to discourage double voting from multiple posters.
I mean I could have so many "rules" for this, community posters only, posters with 1,000 posts or more but these have been the "rules" I have tried to stick since the beginning.

But you still haven't established WHAT qualifies Comicbookkid for disqualification. I think that is what we are all trying to understand. if you think about it makes perfect sense. This is supposed to be about poster's who's quality has been consistent over time. If you have awesome things to say about spider-man movies yet can barely string a sentence together on any other topic this goes against this
I'm not saying this is the case with you matt as you are clearly a very articulate and intelligent person.
Look at is this way, if you're spotting trends the most accurate result is gained by taking an rolling average throughout an entire population. By simply taking criteria based samples (like posters who only show up for a particular franchise) the results become skewed. :up:

Because it has nothing to do with community. For example what if wilhelm goes away for a month. One of your voters might decide to come back to the hype for that month only and therefore be prevented from experiencing the full glory that is wilhelm.
If you have posters who have been here month after month then they have at least had THE OPPORTUNITY to experience both posters

But I still say give it to Matt, 'cause it's true...there was a vote to decide if it's a "Community" thing or a "Hype" thing, and people want a "Hype" thing, and I deserve to win a "Community" thing, but no way do I deserve to win a "Hype" thing.
I checked out the X-Men, Spider-Man and Superman boards after the movies came out, to see what the reactions were like, and I would never even want to associate with most of those people. :o

Campaigning could be done to cater to said voters and it virtually eliminates any foul play as someone would have to sign up initially to even get to vote.
