http://comingsoon.net/nextraimages/stathamdeathrace.jpgEnglish actor Jason Statham (Crank, "The Transporter (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=20030#)" films, The Italian Job) is in talks to star in the futuristic thriller Death Race.

The Universal Pictures project is a remake of Roger Corman's 1975 cult classic Death Race 2000, which starred David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=20030#). It was set in a dystopian America in which the president presides over an ultraviolent road race from New York to Los Angeles. One of the ways that drivers score points is by mowing down innocent bystanders using their heavily armed cars.

Paul W.S. Anderson (Alien vs. Predator, Resident Evil) is writing and directing the remake. A late summer/early fall start is being eyed.

Tom Cruise (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=20030#) and his production partner, Paula Wagner, will produce.

While this sounds truely terrible, I did laugh at mowing down innocent bystanders. Nice to know the President puts population control as a top priority.

wow...of all films to remake....as much as i loved the original death race 2000 - i can't see it as a hollywood hit. just wondering if stathom is playing the "frankenstein" character or what.

it'd be cool to see him impersonate Sly, who, in the original, mumbled so incoherently i assumed at first his charcter didn't really have any lines, or if he did he must have been playing a foreign character who'd they'd forgotten to give subtitles too.

I don't know if I've I seen the original.
I know I saw a movie where they ran people over and got points are something, seemed very surreal.
I'd watch it......on DVD.

Personally, I thought the original was terrible. The fact that Anderson is now writing and directing just makes this an absolute avoid.

Comic-Con '07: Death Race Update!

Resident Evil: Extinction writer/producer Paul W.S. Anderson gave ShockTillYouDrop.com an update today at Comic-Con about his next project, Death Race at Universal Pictures.

The film is an update of producer Roger Corman's classic 1975 Death Race 2000 that featured Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine.

The new version, starring Jason Statham, will be played as a straighter movie but will have a witty social commentary on reality TV. It won't be as campy as the original, said Anderson. Everyone is back - Frankenstein, Machine Gun Joe, etc. Anderson added it would be brutal, a very violent race to the death.

The Universal Pictures release begins shooting in four weeks for a September 26, 2008 release.

look, if you're remaking something like Casablanca, yeah, you dont get Paul Anderson or Jason Statham...but if you're remaking Death Race 2000, a f**king Roger Corman movie starting Sylvester Stallone, I think they'll do just fine...it's supposed to be hokey and shlocky, and other words ending in y :o

Good lord, what is Statham thinking working for idiots like Paul WS Anderson and Uwe Boll? Is he trying to kill his career? :o

BTW, Deathrace became one of the first controversial videogames. Stuck up parents were appalled by the fact that it was a game where you could kill people. So much so in fact, that the publisher later changed the game's literature to call the pedestrians "gremlins," rather than let us assume the little white pixel blobs were people.

Gibson and Allen Enter Death Race

MTV reported this weekend that director Paul W.S. Anderson has signed Transformers star Tyrese Gibson and The Bourne Ultimatum star Joan Allen for Death Race, which starts filming in four weeks for a September 26, 2008 release.

The two join Jason Statham in the no-holds-barred, ultraviolent car race, set in 2020. The film is an update of producer Roger Corman's classic 1975 Death Race 2000 that featured Sylvester Stallone and David Carradine.

Universal Pictures will distribute.

Death Race Set in a Prison?
Source: Empire Online (http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=21047)
September 11, 2007

Ian McShane talked to Empire Online (http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=21047) about Paul W.S. Anderson's Death Race (http://www.comingsoon.net/films.php?id=20888) remake at Universal Pictures.

It's a remake of Roger Corman's 1975 classic, Death Race 2000, which starred Sylvester Stallone (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=37140#) and David Carradine. The original featured a cross-country car race of the future in which pedestrians were run down for points.

"This is even more violent," said McShane. "This is set in the future, it's like NASCAR to the death inside prison. On TV (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=37140#). And I play the guy who runs the race, coaches the racers, from inside prison. It's a lot of fun."

The movie, which takes place in the year 2020, also stars Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson and Joan Allen. It is scheduled for a September 26, 2008 release.

1st Crappy Image Reveals Much About Paul W.S. Anderson's DEATH RACE film!!!

Harry here... It's the Holiday time period. Post Christmas.... Pre New Year... I'm in an incredibly good mood... or was. I think I had completely given up on the notion that Paul (worthless ****) Anderson was remaking DEATH RACE... A film that at one point was to be directed by Jan De Bont and had folks like Tom Cruise and Sylvester Stallone rumored to be attached. But then... like a post-apocalyptic cockroach crawling out of the wreckage of eons of development hell imerges... Paul W.S. Anderson... An incredibly nice and charismatic smoldering train wreck of talent.

He has written and is directing this film, that a press release describes as thus:

Genre: Action-Thriller
Cast: Jason Statham, Joan Allen, Tyrese Gibson, Ian McShane
Directed by: Paul W.S. Anderson
Screenplay by: Paul W.S. Anderson
Producers: Jeremy Bolt, Paul W.S. Anderson, Paula Wagner
Executive Producers: Roger Corman, Dennis E. Jones

Jason Statham leads the cast of an action-thriller set in the post-industrial wasteland of tomorrow, with the world’s most brutal sporting event as its backdrop. A penitentiary full of felons has inspired the jailers to create a grisly pastime ripe for lucrative kickbacks. Now, adrenalized inmates, a global audience hungry for televised violence and a spectacular arena come together to form the Death Race.

Three-time speedway champion Jensen Ames (Statham) is an expert at survival in the harsh landscape that has become our country. Just as he thinks he has turned his life around, the ex-con is framed for a gruesome murder he didn’t commit. Forced to don the mask of the mythical driver Frankenstein—a crowd favorite who seems impossible to kill—Ames is given an easy choice by Terminal Island’s warden (Joan Allen): suit up or rot away in a cell.

His face hidden by a metallic mask, one convict will be put through an insane three-day challenge. Ames must survive a gauntlet of the most vicious criminals in the country’s toughest prison to claim the prize of freedom. Driving a monster car outfitted with machine guns, flamethrowers and grenade launchers, one desperate man will destroy anything in his path to win the most twisted spectator sport on Earth.

The most depressing news? We'll get to see Joan Allen in a truly dreadful movie. But then I wonder... can Ian McShane and Jason Statham save this? Well look at the production design and look of the shot below... Every aspect looks like derivative Mad Max bull****. I dare Paul W.S. Anderson to make a great film. Every time out I hope he does it, but instead he continually explosively ****s in the faces of his audience members. He's horrifyingly inept. I pray this is different, but he's inspired no confidence in me.

I've seem the original, it was a Roger Corman flick, and this elitist attitude is downright laughable. The original 30+ year old film was low budget late night cheese. Just because something is a Cult film doesn't make it f'ing Citizen Kane, Psycho, or Gone with the Wind.

The plot in the original was better. It was just crazy mayhem, this one's just "Win the race and you're free." Eh, stupid. Though the "they set me up" -twist might bring something interesting to the mix.

I'll still see this one. On DVDRip.

Paul W.S. Anderson Confirms David Carradine Cameo In ‘Death Race’ Remake (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/06/18/paul-ws-anderson-confirms-david-carradine-cameo-in-death-race-remake/)

As much as I’m tempted to roll my eyes at anything Paul W.S. Anderson directs at least a small part of me is curious about what he’s cooking up for August with the release of “Death Race” (am I alone? The trailer wasn’t that bad).

True, Jason Statham’s track record as an action hero isn’t exactly flawless but “Death Race” was and remains a great concept. We’ll find out soon enough if this remake or re-imagining or whatever we’re calling these things this week turns out to be worth our while.

There’s been a lot of chatter among the loyal “Death Race” fanbase about all the changes being made in this new flick. Anderson addressed all the major points in this interview just the other day. Perhaps most interestingly he revealed to our own Shawn Adler that the one and only David Carradine will indeed be popping up in the film.

Said Anderson, “I wanted to tip my hat to the original, but also wouldn’t want it to become a cheesy cameo-fest. There’s obviously been, ‘Oh, where’s the David Carradine cameo?’ It’s there, and I think it’s a nice thing for fans. In fact, I had a conversation with David about the movie this morning.”

Statham playing the same role. This movie looks one dimensional. Here is the kicker...they tell you the entire story in the trailer and then show action...why do I need to go pay for this??? He gets set up, he goes to prison, and he is forced to death race to earn freedom.

I don't know. The point of seeing the film is seeing how good it's aspects (direction, script, acting, action, special effects, etc.) are. The Iron Man theatrical trailer gave away the entire story and showed action, but that didn't stop me from seeing it.

I don't know. The point of seeing the film is seeing how good it's aspects (direction, script, acting, action, special effects, etc.) are. The Iron Man theatrical trailer gave away the entire story and showed action, but that didn't stop me from seeing it.
Downey >>>>>>>>> Statham

I have seen movies with cars modified and they fight to the death. Mad Max is good, this will be a renter.

Statham playing the same role. This movie looks one dimensional. Here is the kicker...they tell you the entire story in the trailer and then show action...why do I need to go pay for this??? He gets set up, he goes to prison, and he is forced to death race to earn freedom.

You can also assume him and tyrese team up in the end, Tyrese wins his freedom and Statham proves his innocence. While they are walking away Jason says and I quote "pockets ain't empty cuz" Tyrese "Well i ain't hongray"

Did you write this movie good sir:wow: How do you know so much:yay: Poor Joan Allen. Hopefully Bourne will call her halfway through and she will go back to hunting him.

It looks cool, but also hilariously terrible.

When Statham is with the right director he can be pretty good, but why does he insist on starring in this self-promoting tripe?

I'm pretty sure I can wait until this is out on DVD before I think about seeing it. Could be a lot of fun (sure looks it), but I'm not really looking forward to it.

I expect this to be a mindless but fun action flick. No more, no less. I'll consider it theater-worthy.

I'm starting to hate seeing this trailer in theaters, because all three times I've seen it, this has happened:

During the last clip, where the guy goes "You can shoot me but you can't KILL ME!" just before getting pancaked by the car, there was always a smartass in the theater who thought he was a comedian by saying "Apparently they can" or "Guess not". They just completely ruined it.

I loved the original Death race 2000.
(take elitist attitude) It was the greatest piece of low budget cheese,( well one of em anyway) thrill ride that alot of movies try to live up too.it should've never been remade just as cough cough "Rollerball" cough cough "Planet of the Apes" and cough cough "I am legend" shouldn't have been. But why come up with something new. when you can just remake 70's flicks, bottle them as new for younger viewers and make money.
Thank you and good nite or morning or whatever. hehe

This is what I don't understand, and it's perhaps up to the viewer's imagination:

So each racers has to have a HOT female navigator in each car right? There was numerous times where there's no girl INSIGHT in some of the cars. Unless they don't want to acknowledge them, I thought it was stupid. There was shots were it was CLEAR that the car only had one racer in it.

This inconsistency was weird, I thought.

A lot of stunt driving is like that. Sometime it's even noticable when a guy is filling for a woman. I would imagine that's the reason.

It's really hard to pick this movie apart, because you know exactly what you are getting when you go in...so I can't say it was a disapointment, because I expected a cheesey film, and that's exactly what I got. Bottom line, it's a pretty vapid action flick. In fact, it was constant action, but so uncompelling that I was very bored.
But ya know...I guess it wasn't any worse than the original.

I saw this yesterday in a free screening actually. I was really suprised how much I liked it. it was like one of those old school action movies where it was all about who was the coolest, most baddest motha in the joint, the hot women at their side, and their kick ass vehicle violence. Is the story great? Hell no? Was this a blast, hell yeah. I like Action Statham (Well I like Brit used Statham too), I think Joan Allen and Ian McShane do good jobs, and most of all I was suprised by Paul W.S Anderson. Was the script great? Omce again no, but there weren't any truly cringe inducing moments like say the third act of Alien vs Predator or horrible acting like some of the people in Resident Evil. He did a far better job accomplishing the movie he set out to make here than he has before. And the action just kicks ass. And even though I prefer my intelligent action films (Dark Knight for example) It was cool to have a brainless, non-watered down PURE MAN action movie. Really suprised, had some genuine fun.

It was alight. I chuckled at the guy that killed Statham's wife. My first thought was lol ninja killed ur wife. The ending was very satisfying--that present Hennesey got.

That dude with the glasses was my favorite character in the movie.

This so resembles The Condemned with Steve Austin which could have been in this movie. I may wait and see this on a double feature day when i go see Babylon AD or Tropic Thunder. I am not sure which will be second movie after Death Race.

How sad it is to go see a car chase movie and just get a bunch of terrible shots of cars shooting and crashing into each other without any coherence. I mean, the takes were like 1 second long, WTF

I went to see this movie today, and thought it was okay effort. I would agree with some its a mindless, action flick.I'm not sure why they did'nt call it Twisted Metal,as this movie really had no relation to Death Race 2000,except maybe the drivers.
I wished it had a little more substance to it,little more mayhem, but did'nt expect this to be a oscar nominated movie. The more the movie went on the more I felt it played out like the movie Condemned, but with cars.
The major let down is you have all these busty hot chicks and no topless or nude scenes /sigh....

The futuristic setting and premise of convicts competing for entertainment reminded me more of The Running Man, I wasn't expecting much from the director of the suckfest Aliens vs. Predator I only saw it because Jason Statham is a badass fighter and of course I wanted to see car smashes.

The movie delivered on it but I felt the car chases were just too long and all the shaky cam slo-mo metal grinding was just tedious, just wait for it on DVD.
