I liked the one on the smog monster.

The first Godzilla movie I ever saw was Godzilla vs. Megalon, and I probably watched it about 20 times. Good stuff.

I did not like the last Godzilla movie though. It was a martial arts action movie with a few monster battles happening in the background. But it was more about the humans and their conflicts with the aliens, which could have been an okay movie in it's own right, but it made for a very poor Godzilla movie. I actually significantly prefer the American Godzilla remake over Final wars.

Movies205

I actually enjoyed Final Wars simply because it had every monster in it so it was fun to see Godzilla blow through like every single monster he's fought.

Actually, Mechagodzilla and Megalon were missing. But apart from that, I didn't think it was bad.

It would've been a better film if it was called "Iguana" or some crap like that. I liked Final Wars. First G-flick I saw was either Megalon or King of the Monsters. I bought the 'Gojira' SE DVD they put out some months ago and haven't watched the orignal japanese version yet.

I have Godzilla (1998) and Godzilla: Final Wars.

Movies..not good, but not bad. Rather not see the 98 one, but Final Wars was watchable. Just wish Sony put more extras on it. In Japan it got like a 2 to 4 disc set!

Love the big-G. I remember the first G movie I ever got to watch was Godzilla 1985. Scarred the crap out of me in the begining with those leech things. Crazy. Used to watch Godzilla movies on tv alot to, and bought action figures. My friend was the big Godzilla fan while I liked Mecha G better. Most likely because I always thought of him as the dragonzord from power rangers. Im a G-fan that also really enjoys the American Remake. Final wars was ok not great. If it had Jet it would have been awesome. Hope that re-rumored Imax Godzilla movie happens. We need more Godzilla.

Don't worry, I am a kindred spirit. I did not like the human characters much (save for Hank Azaria and Jean Reno's characters, who were awesome), but the monster action was great, and that's what I went to the movie to see. Overall, I like the movie, and wish we'd gotten to see a sequel.

Me and my older brother have almost gotten into fistfights over it though. :o

Because there is no shortage of idiots on the internet who think it's cool to call the '98 Godzilla "GINO." They think that automatically legitimizes them as Godzilla fans, in the same way many guys think that saying "Angelina Jolie is hot" legitimizes them as heterosexuals. However, it is not true.

Yeah, the soundtrack for the 1998 Godzilla film was pretty good, but as for the film, it's ... alright. Personally, it's more of a Beast from 20,000 fathoms kind of movie, than that of a Godzilla one. But the teasers/trailers leading up to the movie were excellent.

There's never going to be a sequel to the 1998 US Godzilla, so I guess it's better to discuss Godzilla's future film potential in this thread.

Knowing how the Japanese like to...shall we say..."imitate" certain successful American movies, there could be plans for a more Cloverfield-style Godzilla movie in the future.

Toho studios really needs to consider letting a foreign FX company like Weta or ILM help out with the visuals however.

I often get asked what my favorite Godzilla movie is, but that's a hard question to answer because of various types of G-films. I find it easier to break it down into my favorite movie from each decade:

1950s: Gojira (1954, Japanese version - duh)

1960s: Destroy All Monsters (1968)--- a tough call, because Mothra vs Godzilla (1964) is also one of the best

1970s: Terror of MechaGodzilla (1975)

1980s: (only 2 to choose from): Return of Godzilla (1984)

1990s: Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla (1993)

2000s: Godzilla, Mothra, MechaGodzilla: Tokyo SOS (2003)

I think that Cloverfield is good for two sequels, especially if they put just a bit more emphasis on the creature & other places it may have attacked. Cloverfield isn't the type of movie that should ever be remade, though, so two more movies will do just fine. Oh, good god no. The film is awful on so many levels. Not just as a Godzilla film, but as a film in general. It's just...so bad. Fun, yes. But, very, very bad.

As far as it being better than any Japanese Godzilla film goes, I'll say this: it's about par with, say, a "Godzilla v.s. Mechagodzilla," with a higher budget. It can't top the original, nor any of the others directed by Ishiro Honda, however. They're just awesome.

No-one honestly expects to see "Godzilla vs. the Parasite" happen, and no-one is advocating that they waste Cloverfield 2's potential on a dumb cash-in-cross-over movie. It's fun to imagine how the fight would go down, though.

Timstuff

It depends on if it was the American Godzilla or the Japanese one. The American Godzilla would put up a fair fight IMO, but it'd be a major struggle. If it were the Japanese Godzilla, he'd totally KO Parasite, but if he had to fight an adult, it would be a major struggle on the scale of a Japanese 'zilla flick.

The Joker_1000

Dude, the Parasite would annilhate American Godzilla so I hope you were joking there. American Godzilla was killed by missles which did virtually nothing to the Parasite who took it & just kept on coming. Japanese Godzilla could possibly put up a fight but I think the Parasite would win that fight as well. The Parasite is hella strong.

The only problem with an all CGI Godzilla is that CGI is way beyond Toho's budget capabilities. They've used it very well for underwater swimming scenes but rely on practical effects for all other shots. Besides, Godzilla is not Godzilla unless it's the suit.

While I don't think that the "real" Godzilla (meaning the Japanese Godzilla) will always have to be a man in a suit, the current level of CGI used at Toho studios just isn't good enough to justify a non-suit Godzilla yet.

I do think that a Godzilla suit could be combined with CGI to make the head and tail movements more realistic however. Someday I would like to see a fully-CGI Godzilla done right just to know it could be done.

The thing that makes classic Godzilla movies fun to watch is not just the FX, but the whole vintage-feel of the movie itself. A 1960s Godzilla movie has an atmosphere of garish colors (although the film is a bit faded), frantic action, retro styles, bad dubbing and gonzo special-effects that just can't be duplicated anymore.

Being able to put Japanese Godzilla movies in context and appreciate what they represent in that context is what makes them so great. This is why Godzilla is still the most recognized giant monster character in movie history.

Watched it on tv last night for the first time in years. Its OK, but not a Godzilla movie.

They basically cut off his balls & turned him into a Giant puppy dog. Hell, with the 'sad' music at the end when he was dying, I felt like I was watching 'Old Yeller', and then everyone cheers when he dies. That always confused me. OK, sure, he messed up the city, but there were music cues during the film that make you want to like Godzilla (the fish/times square scene comes to mind). Then they kill him & everyone cheers.

Godzilla should have been terrifying, much like the cloverfield monster. He shouldve eaten Matthew Broderick when he was taking a good look at him. Which is why I loved the scene in Cloverfield where the monster did the same thing & then it ate Hud.

Ya, they tried to sensitize godzilla for the audience. I don't think they got it though. I rooted for godzilla the whole movie destroying stuff, and was hoping for more 'fire breath'.
I think what made the movie bad especially for 'zilla fans' was they made him this migrating lizard, and not some monster trying to make a social statement. Though I don't mind this in ways as its a different take, and somewhat refreshing view. I think they could of tinkered with his looks a little,I did'nt mind the 'dinasour' look, but they could of twinked it here and there.
I think the main issue was for me the acting, and basic story plot. They were all bad,I like Matthew Broderick, but his character(especially his name) were terrible, then there was his girlfriend, she was atrocious imo. She singled handedly ruined the movie for me.
I hope they do another 'American version',and would prefer 'japenese' type godzilla, and for crying out loud no,no,and no to 'zilla-raptors'.

then there was his girlfriend, she was atrocious imo. She singled handedly ruined the movie for me.

Yeah, the American Godzilla movie pretty much ruined Maria Patillo's (http://imdb.com/name/nm0001623/) career. Since 2000, it looks like all she's done is a few scattered bit parts on TV shows.

Did she do anything good before she was in Godzilla, anyway? I mean, was her role was written and directed around being an annoying blond, or was it due to her actual acting ability?

At any rate, both her and Matthew Broderick's characters were extremely annoying, and the movie would have been way better off without them. And unfortunately, they were the ones who got the majority of screen time. :o

haven't seen godzilla in years
i enjoyed the film

love the helicopter chase part
"Ithink i lost him" then bam big explosion

I think matthew Brodrick is a very underrated actor
as pretty much all the movies i've seen with him in them his preformances are quite good

I just had a thought...

Now that Sony has won the HD format wars, I wonder if all the deluxe edition DVDs of the classic Godzilla movies they've been releasing are going to be re-released in Blu-Ray format.

I might have to buy them all over again. :csad:

Toho stated they would be giving Godzilla a break following 2004's Godzilla: Final Wars.

Some fans believe 2014 may be the year we would see another Toho Godzilla film. With it being the year of Godzilla's 60th anniversary. So yeah, that would be a good return date. But it's just speculation right now. In any event, we still got a wait ahead of us.

So, do the later Godzilla movies look more realistic than the earlier ones? If so, I'll check them out. For some reason I've been getting more & more interested in monster movies as a whole & if the latter Godzilla movies look realistic, even with it just being a man in a suit, I'll check them out.

They definately have better special effects and they do have a bit of cgi in there, but it's not really "up there" kind of cgi (not like LOTR effects, or SW, for example). It's still very sweet to see the more recent ones with better effects though.

The man in a suit has always been there. The best recent Godzilla movie from Toho, in my opinion, is GMK (Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah): All Monsters Attack. It came out in 2002 I think. But yeah, it's definately a kick-asser in my mind.

We don't need anymore American Godzilla movies, that's the whole point of us getting our own monster in Cloverfield, so we don't screw up other people's monsters. Sure, I like Zilla but it wasn't the original Godzilla which is why the movie is so hated. I like Zilla more but in the end of the day, what they should've done was make a mvie about Godzilla & maybe tweak the design a little bit with CGI & give him one monster to fight or show him terroizing the world after awakening from a long slumber.

Godzilla

So, what was the very first Godzilla movie about?

Short answer:

In the original Gojira, Godzilla is clearly a metaphor, as well as the living symbol/embodiment of the atomic bomb that ended the war. and the film itself is a superb transformation, as well as reminder, of the desolation and horror that was found at Hiroshima some years prior, turned into a cinematic work of art.

And one that shows Godzilla in it's purest form. Depth and all.

With Godzilla King of the Monsters (yeah the one with Raymond Burr), it's just basically a typical giant monster movie. And unfortunately, loses some of the impact found in Gojira. But the 1956 film does have it's charm. And is fairly good for what it is, considering the obstacles with incorporating Burr into the storyline and all.
