There's been a lot going on, and more to come, so these will be brief
and to the point....

The first draft for the script to World War Z has been turned in and
has met with a *very* positive reaction. I'm making my final
revisions now and should turn in the second draft by the 23rd or so.

...

Having finished WWZ and David, there are at present five other feature
projects in front of me which I'll be choosing between over the next
few weeks: one based on a mainstream historical novel by a pulitzer
prize winning author, another historical work, a very well known
Marvel comics character, a sequel to a classic mainstream mystery
film, and a movie based on a massively influential series of SF
novels. Which of those goes first will depend on the deals now being
put together. Suffice to say I've found myself in rather stunning
company of late.

Expect several major announcements at San Diego Comic Con in addition
to all the stuff already discussed.

The full story is at the url on the quote. A very well known character = Captain America? Silver Surfer? Thor? Deadpool (:oldrazz:)?

who's J. Michael Straczynski ?

Okay, a little review:

Straczynski has written television series, comic books, novels, radio dramas, the works. Back in the '80s he wrote for various genre shows like He-Man and She-Ra, Ghostbusters, New Twilight Zone, Captain Power, and even Walker Texas Ranger. Right at this moment he is the writer for Amazing Spider-Man and Fantastic Four, for the last several years.

His biggest work is creator of BABYLON 5, which ran for 110 episodes, 91 of which he wrote himself. So if anyone asks you, just say, "He created Babylon 5," and they'll get it.

I'm thinking (and hoping) Dr. Strange. Captain America doesn't suit J. Michael Straczynski, and Thor is being done by that other guy. I think he could make an awesome Dr. Strange script though, and I really hope that movie gets made.

It's about time they remade Howard the Duck properly.

JMS + Marvel = Very cool news.

I can imagine JMS making a very faithful Marvel feature film. Damn who can it be? Dr Strange or Captain America? Maybe Nick Fury.

Loved his work on Babylon 5 too. Some really compelling television going on during the 90's.

His Doctor Strange mini came out of a proposal for a movie on the character. And it was quite crappy.

For the lazies out there:

For Fox he has written a script for a Silver Surfer feature. He has seven more projects he can get to now that the WGA strike is over.

Audience questions led the rest of the hour. Squadron Supreme was brought up early on. Straczynski says that when the book went from Supreme Power to Squadron Supreme and the focus was taken off of Hyperion “I started to suck.” Straczynski asked that the book stop.

Asked about what the legacy of Babylon 5 is, Straczynski said it opened the door for science fiction to tell their stories in long, complicated arcs with lasting consequences. He sees the influence of his creation in Battlestar Galactica, Lost, and The 4400.

For what the Silver Surfer movie entails Straczynski says it will cover the origin of the character. He said it will feature Galactus, noting that the latest Fantastic Four film held off on showing Galactus to reveal him for this film.

P.S. Wow that was a poorly written article. :ss:

Cool, we get a Silver Surfer movie with an actual Galactus in it.
Since it will be removed from the silliness of the FF, maybe we might get a decent comic film out of Fox.

Wonder if they'll keep him so dependent to his board.

Latest interview w/Straczynski re:Surfer

Q: Did your work on Silver Surfer: Requiem comic bring about the offer to write the Silver Surfer movie?

A: It was one of those weird synchronicities. Whether or not it ever gets made I don't know because they were kind of disappointed in how Fantastic Four 2 did. And given how this will be a subset of FF2 in terms of the marketing strategy, I think there is hesitation there about putting it forward. The script is pretty good, I like it, but whether or not it goes into production, I have no idea.

Q: Does this pick up where Silver Surfer left off in Fantastic Four 2?

A: I was writing it as FF2 was about to come out, and the theory was for it to pick up literally the next frame after the FF2 movie, where you find out why Silver Surfer was there and what happened to him. We would have seen Galactus, his home world, what happened and him trying to get back there, because now that he's betrayed Galactus, he's concerned his home world might be in jeopardy.

Q: When do you mean when you say,"We see Galactus"?

A: In the script I come up with some ways to visualize him that are true to the original, but take it one step further using the current CGI technology that we have. So we would have seen him as a character on numerous occasions in the second movie, not inconsistent with the first distant shot of him in that that's just a way of concealing who and what he really is. Believe me, he would be not at all silly looking.

well, hopefully Fox will let the rights expire so Marvel can self-finance a surfer film...

Same here. I love JMS's Babylon 5 (although Season 5 let me down big time), and I even attended a couple of B5 conventions. I hope he will take a shot at Capt. America, and I think he will do a good job.

From Collider:
Screenwriters J. Michael Straczynski and Matthew Sand on BROTHERS IN ARMS, FORBIDDEN PLANET, SHATTERED UNION, RED STAR, SILVER SURFER, WWZ, and LENSMEN (http://www.collider.com/2009/11/22/screenwriters-j-michael-straczynski-and-matthew-sand-on-brothers-in-arms-forbidden-planet-shattered-union-red-star-silver-surfer-wwz-lensmen/)

Q: Is your Silver Surfer draft dead?

JMS: What happened was when FF2 didn’t do as well as they hoped it would do, it caused them to call into question a Silver Surfer movie. The script that I wrote picked up right where FF2 left off. So if they do a Silver Surfer film down the road, it’ll have to be its own separate things.

Q: Fans thought the tone wasn’t right. Was yours geared at children?

JMS: It was definitely adult fare. I wanted to tell the origin of the Surfer and get into that whole thing.

Didn't take a genius to figure out this was going on. There hasn't been any talk in Hollywood of a Silver Surfer movie for years.

With the exception of Xmen, I can see Marvel being dead at Fox. I think they are hoping that Disney will buy back the rights to the Marvel characters other than the Xmen, like the F4, DD and SS. I think the reboot announcement right after the Disney acquisition kinda seals that. So I don't see a SS movie being made any time soon unless Disney gets it back and does it Pixar style.

I doubt they are hoping a competitor buys properties from them.

Nope. That means losing all that DVD and TV revenue. Studios would rather keep the properties and do nothing with them then let a competitor get them and make money with them.

I thought he was writing a Silver Surfer movie. He could certainly deliver on that.

BTW: why do non-comic fans think he's silly? How's a shiny surfboard the dumbest way to fly around space?

TheVileOne

He apparently did work on a Silver Surfer movie script. But Fox doesn't want to make a movie anymore because of the crappy Fantastic Four sequel that was supposed to be a launching point for Silver Surfer. Doug Jones has also seemingly given up on playing Silver Surfer again.
