10. King Kong (1976)
9. The Mummy Returns
8. Slugs
7. Escape from L.A.
6. The Lost World (1960)
5. Predator

okay, seriously... tht is the worst list, in the history of lists... Predator has good effects, same with the abyss and alien R....
Many of the others, are just dated..... but were decent for their time....
What about Lost in Space the movie, or that one with the monsters ont he cruise ship..... with Jean Grey......
what about Superman the movie? or Star Wars for that matter... those are dated as well, but Empire won't touch those because they are classic... stupid magazine....

The effects for A Sound of Thunder were extremely lacking, but the CGI monsters were just awful (particularly the water eel and the baboon-lizards). The backgrounds and minor stuff were good, though.
I blame the lack of funds the WB parlayed into it. It seems like the WB only paid the company enough money to pay the cheapest special effects houses to complete it and not spend enough money on making it look better. Had the CGI been done by ILM, WETA or even Sony Pictures Imageworks, the CGI would've looked much better and less noticeable.

Actually, the production company (Franchise Pictures) went under during post production. Not to mention floods on the set during filming. I guess WB didn't care for the movie and didn't want to finish the CGI when the production company went under. Wouldn't blame them. Almost every movie they released in theaters from the production company were complete disasters in terms of box office. Battlefield Earth, Driven, Get Carter remake, etc.
Also the budget was either 53 million or 80 million. How much of that was used is unknown. I'm guessing under 40 million was used before the company folded.
A a little known fact. If you go to the site for UFO films (or whatever it's called) you can view their demo reel. Two brief shots of the movie is in it. The point? UFO mainly works on Sci-Fi Channel tv flicks. Ouch.

Oh, yes Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie's CGI has aged quite badly, even in 1997 it was dated. Particularly the MegaZord vs. giant Ivan Ooze in the finale. But it was fun, in an arcade-game sort of way. And yes, I liked the movie too for all its cheesy goodness.
I think the reason why people overlook Clash of the Titans is because it was noted for its stop-motion effects and they don't want to diss the guy who did all that (I can't spell his name properly, it's Ray H-something).

Agreed. What they need to do is "level the playing field". Compare movies within a given year, instead of across time. Which movies had the WORST special affects last year?
Comparing the effects of a movie made in 1976 to one made in 2006 makes no sense whatsoever.

Spawn is a good example of horrible effects, not just the Devil, but Violater look pretty awful as well, his transformation was embarassing.
Another example of poor effects is the Terminator, the movie is great plot wise, but some of those effects were awful, the scene where the Terminator cuts his eye out couldn't have looked faker if they tried. Don't get me wrong the movie is incredible, but the effects were laughable at times.
Where was the 1st Harry Potter on that list? Off the top of my head horrible CGI effects include the Troll, Neville on the broomstick and Fluffy the three headed dog. That movie should have had better effects.

What the original poster didnt include in the list was that it was only specific scene's in those movies, in the Abyss it was the alien ship coming out of the water, in Predator it is when Carl Weathers arm is blown off and you see his proper arm under the prosthetic.

Mortal Kombat Annihilation had some of the worst effects I've ever seen.
I agree with The Mummy 2 though. There were so many, bad cartoony effects. The first film was a lot better in terms of visuals.
anyone remember the devil in the movie SPAWN? the scene where he goes in hell and meets the devil? that was horrible! it looked really bad. It looks like video game graphics out of Nintendo 64
Oh God yes, those were terrible effects. I had to look away from the screen for those scenes, lol.

This falls under the dated effects category back in the day they looked pretty sweet

With out those star wars effects, people wouldn't have ILM.
so basically, if you have mentioned SW, you're talking out of your bottom.

Ultraviolet has really bad CGI, imo.

They used wooden toys to show a bus jumping over Tower Bridge as it was being raised.

it depends on when the movie was made. sw episodes 4,5,6 may look cheesy now, but back then the effects were awesome. episode 1 on the other hand had some bad cgi

WORST VISUAL EFFECTS EVER!!!!!
I haven't really seen much of this movie. But I think they were going for a sinbad retro look. That and it's Robert Rodriguez, who makes all of his movies on relatively small budgets.
and A sound of Thunders effects were terrible. They looked like a made for tv movie on the Sci fi channel.

That horse sliding under the truck is just classic avatar-worthy stuff to me. :D
That was awesome.
And I personally think that the Star Wars effects still hold up. Empire at least has great effects.

The Star Wars prequels for relying too much on digital actors and fake CGI backgrounds.
Superman 4 for the obvious matte lines around Supes.

The demo reel isn't working, but there are two shots from the movie (ASOT) that are in the reel. UFO does CGI for some Sci-Fi films.
A Sound of Thunder had 3 faults against it.
1. Floods on the set back in 2002.
2. Franchise Pictures (production company) made a lot of films....that did badly in theaters for Warner.
3. They went under during Post and Warner decided to cut it's loses. It only went to theaters because Warner was obligated to do so.

When we watch Spider-Man, I'm so disgusted with the scene where Peter is leaping across buildings for the first time, I simply rise and leave the room.

Thanks for the heads up (I need to get out more - stuff like this should be common knowledge)! But alas, my post count does not allow me to have a decent-size avatar - that particular movie sequence wouldn't show up too well in a 50 x 50 square.:( I'll just bide my time until then...:ninja:

Well, it is bad CGI but is it really something to get disgusted over?

The 2005 TV Hercules movie. The props were so bad I couldn't believe my eyes. It looked like a school play. They made 1995 Hercules The Legendary Journeys five tele-movies seem like they had the budget of Troy.

Yes, yes it is.
My blood pressure rises and everything. I can't believe they didn't force the CGI unit they hired, to either re-work that or not get paid.

It's really not that bad. Most of the movies in this thread would dream of having effects like that.
