View Full Version : The Soul-GLO Experience
For a second I was excited the thread was re-opened. Spoke to soon. :(
I've been pushing this for a long time, and it needs to be said again:
DE-MOD MORG.
Morg said this place is closed.
Anyway, glad to see it's not for it's not like the Hype Lounge.
With that said, will the Dim Sum place be back or does this "lounge" include all things Asian as well?
Yes. But apparently the name Soul-GLO is only associated with blacks, so it makes everyone else go "Oh noes!".

Fight Breaks Out Between T.I., Ludacris Entourages

A fight broke out Sunday between the entourages of rap stars Ludacris and T.I. in Hollywood.
The scuffle took place at the Sunset Tower hotel at The Power Brunch-L.A., an event hosted by Warner Music Group EVP Kevin Liles and honoring Holly Robinson Peete and Rodney Peete's Hollyrod Foundation.
As the Peetes, Twista, 106 and Park host Rocsi, Musiq Soulchild, Yung Joc and others enjoyed mimosas, omelets and pancakes, witnesses say punches were exchanged between T.I. and Ludacris's manager, Chaka Zulu.
The brawl escalated, with eight others joining the fracas as guests quickly hustled for the exits and spilled onto Sunset Boulevard, overwhelming valets and forcing deputies to halt traffic so cars could be retrieved. Security moved in and escorted T.I. out of the party. A witness says the rapper's shirt was torn but he otherwise appeared uninjured.
During the fight, a woman was hurt and treated at the scene by L.A. County Fire Department paramedics, who later transferred her to an ambulance, according to a witness. Fire Department officials were unavailable for comment.
An L.A. County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman tells PEOPLE six deputies were summoned to the hotel pool area at 2:50 p.m. after 10 members of the entourages started a melee, but there were no arrests.
"Basically we responded to a disturbance," says Sgt. Kristin Aloma. "No report was taken. We were there in two or three minutes. There was an altercation between the entourages." When deputies arrived to assist, "it was under control and the event security had taken care of it," Aloma says.
According to MTV.com (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1563235/20070624/t_i_.jhtml?rsspartner=rssYahooNewscrawler), the two rappers were longtime microphone rivals who made nice a few years ago, though T.I. boasts on his upcoming CD that he had the best rap album of last year even though Ludacris won the Grammy in that category.
Reps for both rappers did not return calls for comment.
I don't know if this has been discussed. But I truly am sick of Hip HOp today. Thugs.....that's all they are. A classy gala turned into ghetto fabulous brawl. The Source Awards and now this???

you know the problem is.
There are too many rappers and no more Emcees.
i have always felt there are 3 catergories.
Emcees
Clever lyric writers
Rappers
an emcee can start a party and keep it going. An emcee can grab the mic and freestyle and have everyone on the same page. (ie: Run DMC, Slick Rick, Doug E Fresh, Del la Soul, Tribe and all of Zulu nation/Native Tung)
then you have clever rappers. (ie: Ludacris, Missy Elliot, etc) Luda is not a great rapper but he does have clever lyrics.
Then you have rappers. This includes every and anyone from Louisianna or that has "Yung" in their name.
THEY are the reason hip hop died.

i have always felt there are 3 catergories.
You're also forgetting Lil'. :o

Young Members and Chamillionaire for me.
In the beginning; hip hop was all about the DJ, the rapper was just the help who would say how great the DJ was.
Exactly. But by the same token, the rapping aspect had been evolving since the late 80s. So to the point that you had to give it up to creative lyricism, in addition to DJing and turtablism. For a good long while, we had come to appreciate the skills of the MC.
You could argue that it's come full circle in a way, as most rappers now are just reppin' whatever hot producer is out now. But even on that level, most rappers can't hold a candle to the MCs of the old days. And as much respect as I have for certain producers nowadays, I'd love to see more DJs who can sample, scratch, and do some Grandmaster Flash type stuff in the mainstream. I've been listening to Jazzy Jeff's new album and he's got this great song on there with Rhymefest, and there's an old-school sensibility to it, but it doesn't feel like a complete throwback. It's still very contemporary, it just acknowledges what's come before.

I figured Ludacris wouldn't be all apt to start things. He always seemed one of the more "calmer" guys.
Well to be fair, Ludacris wasn't in it. It was his manager. TI was supposed drunk and Ludacris's manager tried to get him to calm down...TI through the punch and then Ludacris's manager moved TI around like a rag doll.
At BET Awards, when TI won, he apologized for his behavior and said it was not royal like. So, he stepped up like a man should an apologized to the crowd and fans. Class act. When you are a celeb like that, sometimes you get caught up in your own hype.

I think it's funny because after NWA hit, young black people everywhere aspire to be a thug. I sit there wondering why the f*** you would want to be a thug? Is it to be "hard"? I hate black people sometimes. It's no wonder why some people are racist sometimes. Sometimes, racist motive seems intentional, and that nature is why, which is a shame.
There were gangs and such before NWA came out, they just put the life to music. I myself grew up in the not so nice part of Dallas and listened to NWA, but also Tribe Called Quest, Rakim, KRS, Jungle Brother's and Big Daddy Kane. NWA was entertaining and just brought to music what I was already seeing. But, I didn't aspire to be a thug. I stood out when it came to my friends and that's due to my mother and father's upbringing who always emphasized education. Alot of it has to do with home training. If it's absent, then kids will look elsewhere for acknowledgment even if it's detrimental. And some of the kids just went along with it because they were already experiencing it in the environment. It just became "popularized" so to speak. Just fell in line to what was popular and selling like with most trends. But it has become more of a lifestyle so to speak. It always has been, but it's been commercialized and embedded that it's the thing to do, sort of the "bad boy" type that has been perpetuated over decades, not just in the black community, but all communities. Hell, even watching Grease, the "bad boys" were the popular kids. Being that it's the 21st century, everything has been made grander and bigger, faster and quicker...life seems to be speeding up a little bit in away (look at how our food is grown (little girls are starting puberty earlier than usual)). Most of these kids today witness what sells...sex and violence, both in TV, movies, print media, and music. If you have some of the most popular movies out there to be Terminator, Godfather, Scarface and topped off with popular shows like Sex In The City, Sopranos, and fashion magazines talking about sex and the perfect body, it's no wonder most kids today have a warped sense of self and reality. These kids have been conditioned to believe that sex and violence is what is recognized and received by popular society. So, they fall in line and act out wanting attention and to be popular and heard. The only thing you can do is remain conscious and try to reach out to a kid 1 at a time.
Most parents that I knew, including my mother, had to work 2 - 3 jobs just to keep up. So, they never really had time for 1 on 1 with their kids. I have friends that I grew up with today who thank me for setting an example to be more than the "hood" mentality. I still am very much cool with kids I've know since the cradle. I've had homeboys who sold drugs, locked up, got out, and saw what I was doing and made some changes in their lives to be better in mind and spirit. My best friend went to jail because he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. He's out doing his best to correct his life. My other best friend, who is now the Regional Director for Men's Warehouse in Kansas City has younger brother's who are still in the "not so nice" part of Dallas. I go visit them at least once a week and they have that whole "thug" mentality because they are products of their environment. However, after interacting with them, when ever I come into their presence, the younger brother pulls his pants up because he knows it's foolish and where it originated from. And I've gotten 1 of the brothers to stop smoking and work on his mind, spirit, and business aspirations.
I say all this because there have been many ingredients that have played into the development of this environment produced "product" (starting way back in slavery time) and it is possible to change the current conditions of the black community. We just have to do our part, even if it's just 1 kid at a time, set the best example, and lead. Ok, that's my soap box speech for today. :woot:

Hype Williams was a great music video director. He was just a fairly bad cinematic director. Such is the problem with most music video directors who try to expand to movies. They're more flash than substance, and movies need a lot more substance than Busta Rhymes rubbing up on Janet Jackson's titty.

Hype's only done one movie, so if Assassin's talking about everything he's ever put out, I assume that includes his music videos. And on that level, even joking about Diddy's BK commercial being better than any of Hype's videos is stupid to me.

Has anyone noticed that Youtube has gotten insanely racist, especially since Don Imus was fired? This isn't some "you did (x) so you are racist" tirade, the comments there are obscene and vulgar, calling people slaves and she-boons. Even though most of the vids are of our people at their not great times, it is still highly unacceptible. The last video (the comments) is just insane. I was thinking of coming to the US for university, but i'm getting the vibe that the **** is about to hit the fan there.
These vids are just some of what I'm talkin about

When someone is accused of racism, everyone that disagrees with it makes it their sole purpose to be as politically incorrect as possible to voice their anger at it. Basically, "you stopped this guy, but let's see you do that to me."

Depends on what I'm wearing. I wear glasses all the time, so I'm either "non-threatening educated black man" or "militant angry black man." Question is, am I also wearing a polo shirt, or a black leather jacket?

You had the entire URL inside of the YT tags. You only needed the Video ID inside of the YT tags.
So, instead of:
[YT]http://www.youtube....z84hI4829[/ YT]
You should have just:
[YT]z84hI4829[/ YT]
That's what I fixed..

some of the white dudes in my cube/team asked me to come to their friend's place to play some poker. I'm cool with it and all, but don't want to be the only black dude going up there. I don't care, I want to make sure I have a partner waiting in the wings. :o
More often than not, I end up being the local black spokesman in mixed company. In Indianpolis, there are a lot of workin' folk black and white, and when your the only one in some of these settings, it's usually pretty cool. I've played Poker w/ a group of white guys, older, but still and It was cool...However keep and eye on the cards:cwink: .
Since most of my time does NOT revolve around the most obscure colors of the new Jordans, I have found a certain disconnect tween some cats, but I try to relate and communicate on a Labor vs. Management type thing, when it comes to the brotha man and/or the other man. It works. Plus I'm one of those workers who feels comfortable in an office or warehouse floor.

Why did cats dislike Hammer? I think he did more for rap world-wide than anyone at that time. People in Guam knew who Hammer was....and that kept the door open for them to want to hear more rappers. I think his peers were jealous of the money and they didn't like the dancin'.
He should be honored at the next Hip Hop Honors on VH1.

You're pretty much right. Others rappers and MCs hated him for "selling out." And by that, I mean he signed to do commercial endorsements, and his concert audiences were full of white kids. These days, rappers consider that a goal.
