Lando was a pimp. He wore a cape, had his own city and had a cyborg bulter.

That's what we all want nowadays. Only we get it by selling that caine.

In anyone's opinion, do you think it's been more difficult to be a black man in America these days than it's ever been?

Sure, being a man is tough enough with all these standards about what a "real man" looks like and is suppose to be, and of course how some women feel about men. But if you're a black man, it's like you have to deal with even more stuff. Like discrimination, women not wanting us, and especially dealing with the stereotypes most people think of when they see us; as being overly aggressive savages who do nothing but crime and other illegal activities and get angry at the drop of a dime.

i hate to generalize but urban folks don't have any taste in films whatsoever. tons of black folks will flock to a crappy ass movie or urban films like stomp the yeard, you got served ,soulplane...

Generally, I think what it comes down to is this: We as blacks don't dig dramas too much, because there's already enough drama in our lives as black folk. When we go to the show, it tends to be purely for entertainment and escapism, unless it is a drama that we feel is socially relevant (X, Ray, Ali).

In anyone's opinion, do you think it's been more difficult to be a black man in America these days than it's ever been?

In a word: no. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but in no way is it the worst it's ever been.

the only people i see complaining about it is black woman. they sit and wonder where have all the black men gone. which is sort of true. most of our asses are in jail the others are all ghettofied and stuck with ghetto hoochies. the good ones thatare left over are in interracial relationships... they to themslves can't find a black woman thats wants them..so i think thats why they date outside thier races. which i think is the cause of black woman dating outside thier race lack of good black males.

while were on the subject, question for you guys. do you guys feel the black males are less ambitious when it comes to thier careers?

i bought up the topic of black woman dating outside thier race awhile ago because they feel that a black man in these days can't give them what they want from life( nice house, car, etc) where i guess a white males orwhatever other races can give them a semi-lavish lifestyle.

My only issue is that we've lost our sociality among each other, but if your going to 'the spot' or the hot ass club lookin for a life partner, you deserve what you find. JUST LIKE WHITE WOMEN, SISTAS don't often know a good thing when they come across it, and this is something we all share, albeit MORE in the black community. This makes more sense to me. Most people I know who are in TRUE, LOVING interracial relationships aren't in one to purposely be dating outside their race (although of course everyone has preferences), they just love the other person for who they are. I don't see any need for people to purposely be "looking outside of their race" in terms of people who have more money, treat them better, etc. There are rich people and *******s in every race

terry78
07-25-2007, 04:24 PM
Well, there will be those males and females in every race that claim they date interracially because they feel there is something superior about the gender of the other said race. Of course it's not true, but people are like, if enough of them act like that, it's valid enough for me. I was in high school, not many black girls were interested in me because I was one of the geeky, more intellectual black dudes. But the latina and white girls would be the ones asking if I had a girl and what not. It never turned me off of black women because i know there's only a handful that act that way. Yes, my girl is korean now but we met via school.

I think the attraction to the "bad boy mystique," whether they're thugs or bikers or whatever, is pretty universal, not just from black or white girls. The only real difference is that one would probably end up in a slum on the upper-west side with a s**tload of kids, and the other would end up in a trailer park with a s**tload of kids.

However, they're all connected by the mystique they fell into...and that both will probably end up on Cops. :o

Yeah, I've noticed that kind of thing. If there's any stereotype that's close to being mostly true, it's that.

But I think it's less of a race thing and just a culture in general. I mean, in China they would be taught to work complex math equations with a bunch of wood with bits of string and little beads on them, and if they didn't get them right, corperal punishment. In Japan, if you failed in something, you ruined your family's honor, and the only way to fix it would be to stab your stomach with a sword and work your way to your throat.

While it doesn't happen anymore, I'm sure that kind-of hardcore treatment has made many generations and taught the next generations not to f**k up. :o

I've said it before and I'll say it again. We have it too good. We are soft. If we can ask if it's harder being black now than it's ever been??

These are "the GOOD OL" DAYS" for us. Blacks don't have a "good ol' days" in the American past, like whites do. The further back we go,in America, the worse it gets.

So enjoy this current day to be black. To actually become what you want. To use the legal system. To buy a home where you want. Sit where you want. Date and marry who you want. No...it's not worse. It's not perfect....but it sho' ain't worse my brotha'..... Andthepickles: EDIT- blah, that sounded really mean.

Does anyone feel that some people hide behind race/stereotypes? It makes me think of Jessica Simpson admitting that she purposely dumbed herself down to fit the "dumb blonde" stereotype to get more entertainment value points.

I think there are a lot of 'posers' in the entertainment industry. Not a surprise considering it is practically their job to be what the public wants to see.

I also think that some people will use steroetypes as excuses once they have been caught doing something wrong. Note that I said 'some' people, in other cases it is a very valid 'reason'.

Which brings up another good point, What is the difference between a reason and an excuse?

I'm sure a lot of those Rappers play up to those sterotypes. They talk about how ghetto they are and that they have have sold drugs or whatever but not many of them mention they went to college or got degrees and stuff.

They play up to what the old guys at the record companies want hear. They sell their dignity and race down the toilet to make money, Especially these new southern rappers.

Actually, quite a few of those guys are pretty scummy, the dirty south is truly quite dirty. Unfortunately this is the only representation of the south currently and that's really unfair to all the hard working black folks there.

They don't surprise me at all. The only difference is that they do probably exaggerate their 'ghettoness' a bit. Being that when they get home they take that crap out of their mouths.

Racism is sooo 60's...seriously,most of it took place in the south.People make these threads cause they like to push buttons,I can't speak for the general public, but from what I've seen at least here in the Northeast is that racism is basically non-existant...I hear black people call each other ***** all the time (i've worked with blacks, illegal aliens, mexicans, gualiminas, whites, spanish, hispanic s,portgueues and yet we all work 12 hours a night in harmony) and still have yet to hear a white person say that to a black person. While black people seem to have a high crime rate among themselves, then why is it that serial killers are always white males?

No way.....it was more "overt" in the South. But brothas was catchin' hell in the north too. Much racism in Bensonhurst/Bedstuy, Dorchester in Boston, Detroit had the race riots, so did Chicago and Cinci is one of most race focused cities I've ever visited. The northern crap was more covert. but it did flare up from time to time.

You must live in a bubble because nothing of what you wrote above reflects reality. If you don't like this thread, stay out of it. Why is that so difficult for you? It's a thread dedicated to celebrating cultures outside of the typical white culture of America, most notably black culture. If that's not your bag then perhaps this thread is not for you.

see i think the ghettofied life has reached the majority, while us regular hard working black males are hard to find.

I don't agree with that. I don't think it has reached the majority. It's just perpetuated by the media...the stereotypical, violent, angry black man. And even for the college educated brothers such as myself...we still can get "gulley" if need be because we were raised in the hood. I don't think hard working black males are hard to find. Just looked over because most perspectives have been warped over time by TV, magazines, movies, and etc. It is somewhat instinctive for society to lean toward something that is popular. Hip hop has been pimped out, commercialized and made popular (mostly thugged out/"hardcore" hip hop). You can go to about any club in the world and I guarantee you a little bit of hip hop will come on. Most of what you hear is the "popluar" hip hop. I remember when 50 Cent first came out, you would even see old white people singing the mantra "Go shorty, it's your birthday"..."I'm into having sex, not into making love...". I see it like this: when you have so many songs, that are similar to that in nature, constantly being played and heard on the radio, those messages become somewhat subliminal and then some people fall into the trappings of that way of thinking and perpetrating that way of life. I've heard so many females down here in Dallas say "I want a thug", or "he got to have a little thug in him." See, I think they confuse the thug for a what it is to be a real man because most thugs/hard cats are muscle bound, have a heavy walk about themself, and tend to be agressive (some women see this as security because they want to feel the guy can wuup up another guy's ass if need be). The modern day thug has replaced the past-time bad boy image of what's attactive and popular. And some so called thugs I've come across are nothing but punks anyway. When they come across some real pain (that they claim they can handle), they cry like little *****es or they have to have a crew with them to feel like a man. Most of them are fake anyway. And it's funny, because those same women who like the thug/hard types are the same ones crying "I can't seem to find a good man"..."men are no good" etc. WELL WHAT THE HELL DO YOU EXPECT WHEN YOU KEEP HOOKING UP WITH THUGS DUMBASS!!! :cmad: :woot: I just laugh when I hear them complain when I see the men they've been with or the game they fall for in the clubs from some of these wannabees.
Most of the women that I dated or had relations with when I was in my younger 20s have pulled me to the side and apologized for the way they acted with me and realized that I was a great guy and have actually tried to get back with me (TOO LATE!). I was always the gentlemen and never the hard type. That wasn't in my make-up. My homeboy pointed out to me that there are no more true love songs on the radio anymore vs back in they day when love songs were popular. Courting was a lot different back then. Now you have young cats screaming "Hey bay bay!" when trying to get the attention of a female. WHAT THE HELL? There is a song that is popular called "Hey BAY BAY!" Sad...:o Luckily, there is a select group of urban professionals (which I've termed Renaissance thinkers) who are into good music, love, empowerment, progression, and community. Those Renaissance thinkers reach all sides of the world and I believe the movement is on a come up. Slowly but surely we are getting back to a community because what we are discussing at the Soul-GLO experience has been recognized and seeds are being planted for a better future.
I'm teaching both my nephews the concept of a gentlemen, about music, art, business, survival, right thinking and living. Ok, I know I went off on a tangent. But I'm passionate about the upgrading of the black community as a whole. :word:

RIGHT ON RIGHT ON! It's all BS. We are doing great things. But, the good things are not really promoted. You'll hear about Brad Pitt and George Clooney going to Africa to do this and that because they are the popular celebrities. But, you won't hear about actors like Mekhi Phiefer building schools in Africa. All you'll mostly hear about is the negative....sex, drugs, and violence.

Is this considered masking my blackness?

For example (even though this is a little extreme due to me being half-Asian), recently, I've been listening to alot of rock and very little rap/hip-hop. I've decided not to wear such baggy clothes anymore (to look more professional/away from the token black guy view), and I wear shirts that actually fit me. I also think of myself as somewhat better and degrade my fellow blacks (who are all 'hood and ghetto, in gangs, and just acting like the stereotypical black person as seen by other races). When I am not viewed as that "thief" or "thug" by other races whenever I go out, it feels good. Sometimes, I see this as trying to separate myself from most black people in my age group, and it feels good when I see myself separated from them, but weird when I start comparing myself to other whites that are my age...

The media fixates on the negative in general because it sells more ads and brings in more viewers. That's why there is all this ridiculous crap with Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan and Britney Spears in the tabloids and even on the damn news channels. Watching people flail miserably through life, destroying themselves is our new national pastime. If there's a sensationalist story of someone famous f**king up, you'll hear all about it, but never about all the good things some of them do with their fame and fortune because that's "boring" as far as the media is concerned.

But I think degrading other blacks is not necessary (even though we all are guilty of talking about each other in a negative way). Something recently occurred to me about the movie Inside Man. I remember when it first came out, and how surprised I was to see Spike Lee directing a movie he hadn't written himself. And I must admit, he's a great technical director. I'd forgotten that he's genuinely good at what he does.
But then I noticed those classic Spike Lee-isms (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFTpmTEcfXc) crawling their way into the film. Notice that the main protagonists are both black (Denzel and Chiwetel). The father and son who (because common sense dictates that only an idiot would bring his 10 year old son on a heist) were innocent by default were black. Meanwhile, the cops who initially mistook the Sikh for a Muslim terrorist were all white. The half-hearted commanding officer who told Denzel to sweep the case under the rug was white. All the bank robbers were white. The shady woman who does wheelings and dealings with dangerous people was white (Jodi Foster white, even).

I love seeing black actors play protagonists in serious roles in good movies, but god damn, Spike. It's like he doesn't know how to make us look good without demonizing pretty much every white character on the screen.

You must be feeling some strange form of "black guilt" or something. This really isn't the film to support your "Spike hates whites" theory. None of the characters you mentioned were "demonized" in this flick. Plus the bank robbers got away.

I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on a pretty big deal going in Hollywood that could be a pivotal moment in the history of black cinema.

Bob Johnson (Mr. BET Bobcat himself) teamed up with the Weinstein Company to create Our Stories Films, a black run film production company that will produce nothing but "comedic, family-friendly feature films for African American and urban audiences." Their first release under the company is Friday's Who's Your Caddy?, which according to Johnson (who appeared on The Steve Harvey Morning Show today) was conceptualized under Queen Latifah's production company.

Essentially, they're trying to create a place where black filmmakers can come in and deal with black executives and make the films that they want to make; for us, by us. Johnson added to his family friendly vision by stating that Our Stories will not produce a film over a PG-13 rating.

Now, as an aspiring black filmmaker myself, the announcement of a black run and operated production company is a thrilling and quite motivating piece of news. And yet, what's disturbing about all of this is that Johnson and company decided to make their initial "christening" release a completely emptyheaded, mindless piece of stereotypical drivel that conjures to mind Soul Plane more than Barbershop.

So, here's the question: will Our Stories push black cinema further and get more black filmmakers opportunities to make films that truly represent the culture, or will they take their "family friendly urban comedies" montra and serve up a factory line of garbage that'll only set us back?

You pretty much answered your own question with the info you provided earlier in your post. "Comedic family friendly flicks that don't go above PG-13" . There's nothing inherently wrong with movies like that but he's already limited what types of films they will even consider making. Also, Johnson is a (very succesful) businessman. Like most businessman he is interested in making money. So don't expect any boundary pushing, IMO. He will go with tried and true movie ideas that will see a return on his company's investment. Just like everyone else in hollywood.

They seem intent in working in only one genre, and a genre that's already seen its fair sure of hollow fluff, especially when it comes to films with predominantly black casts. But it's a genre where black movies have been the most successful from a commercial standpoint, and that's all Bob Johnson cares about. He knows if he plays his cards right, he can get away with spending no more than say ten million to make a movie, and with the right marketing, they can make back twice their budget in one weekend.

On the topic of Tyler Perry, I think there's a place for the stuff he does, and I can't bring myself to hate on the brotha. And you have to admire him for trying to do something like Daddy's Little Girls (which was Madea-free, I believe), and push the idea of a black man busting his ass to be with his children.

When you get to stuff like Soul Plane and Who's Your Caddy, it's less about it being offensive and re-inforcing black stereotypes, and more about the films being grossly unimaginative and derivative. You can just imagine how these films were pitched:

*It's Airplane!. . . .with black people!
*It's Caddyshack. . . .with black people!

And it pretty much ends there.

I watched the first 5 eps when the ran last year on WCIU in Chicago. Haven't watched it since it's debut on TBS, so they might have tweaked it.

But on my intial viewing, I thought the show had tone issues; i.e. trying to make light of situations that weren't funny.

The son's house burnt to the ground, and the first thing his father says is "That's too bad. I know you're not staying here right?" I get that they were going for a James Avery/John Amos tough ass with a heart of gold, but I found the character to be too callous, very off-putting.

I also felt there were a few characters too many, and the kids weren't all that great of actors.

I didn't really like the show, but then again maybe it's because I never really a big Tyler Perry fan.

Ehh, he's cool. He can be overboard at times, but he can definitely be funny. I guess I can see where he is coming from in his acts because I've witnessed quite alot of it. Lindsay Lohan Blames "Black Kid" For Car Chase That Led To Arrest?

Lindsay Lohan may have blamed "the black kid" for the wild chase that ultimately led to her arrest, reportedly telling police, "I wasn't driving. The black kid was driving."
Here's the story: LiLo took 3 male friends hostage when she went to chase down her former assistant and the star was apparently drinking all night. Dante Nigro, Jakon Sutter and Ronnie Blake all went to Malibu with LiLo's former assistant's boyfriend to meet up with the star on Monday afternoon. Linds invited the Dante and her asst.'s boyfriend to her Malibu party for that night.
Dante and the asst.'s boyfriend were both invited while Ronnie and Jakon had to sit and wait outside. Dante claims Lindsay drank all night. The chase started when Lindsay's asst. and her boyfriend went outside and got into an argument, and Lindsay came out and expressed her aggravation. The star's asst. then said "I quit," which really made the actress angry. Ronnie Claims LiLo looked "very messed up" and "raging."
The Denali was Dante's SUV, who was getting ready to leave the party. He hopped into his passenger seat, while Ronnie and Jakon were in the back. The assistant's boyfriend put the key in the ignition and was getting ready to start the car when he jumped out of the car to finish fighting with his girlfriend.
His girlfriend eventually jumped into her own car and left, but by the time the boyfriend returned to Dante's vehicle, Lindsay was in the seat with the car started - and this is when she began chasing the asst.'s car. Ronnie was reportedly so frightened, he actually jumped out of the moving car, claiming when he hit the ground, Lindsay ran over his foot and just kept going.

The guys claim that at one point during the dangerous chase, Lindsay boasted: "I can't get in trouble. I'm a celebrity. I can do whatever the ***** I want." :wow:
To make a long story short, Lindsay's former assistant somehow lost the 'I Know Who Killed Me' actress during the chase, so LiLo went to her asst.'s home, thinking she may have fled there. As she pulled onto the street, her former asst.'s mother was about to pull into the driveway. Not knowing who was aggressively driving the SUV, however, the mother got scared and decided to take off, and that is when Linds began chasing her, even reaching speeds up to 80 MPH!
Once the mother drove to the Santa Monica police Department for help, Linds and everyone jumped out of the car. Police arrived on-scene, which is when Dante claims he may have heard Lindsay tell officers: "I wasn't driving. The black kid was driving."
Meanwhile, The assistant's mother called 9-1-1 to ask for help, claiming someone in a white SUV was chasing her through the streets, and that a guy jumped out of the car.

I really hope Lohan does some real jail time for all this BS she's been pulling. The Fed's have rights to her, now, which means she most likely will. Maybe six months in protective custody in a jail cell will wisen her up. The girl is a train wreck and is either going to kill herself or someone else (or both) at the rate she's going. Remember when they used to roast people that were relatively respectable human beings?

And I know what Lisa Lampanelli will say. "I f*** black guys! I'd probably f*** Flavor Flav! Black men love me because I'm a white woman with a big ass! Yeah, son."

Also, I'm not familiar with the Boondocks strip, but who is Michael Caesar?
Caesar is the 4th black kid to move to the town of Woodcrest (the first 3 being Huey and Riley, followed by Jazmin). He shares Huey's synical outlook of the world, but he's not as mean or angry (ie. he doesn't accidentally hurt Jazmin's feelings all the time). He also likes to make 'yo momma' jokes.

You know what the Boondocks cartoon needs? Cindy MacPhearson, that crazy little white girl that tries way too hard to be "down" with Huey. She was one of the funniest things about the early strips (her, and the white school teachers who were afraid Huey's a communist... which he probably is).

That whole thing reminds me of that American Dad episode where Roger and Steve accidently kill someone, and Steve is like, "what do we tell the cops about the money that's missing?" Lil Jon Recruits Famous Friends For 'Crunk Rock'

P.O.D., Kid Rock, Ciara, Ice Cube, and R. Kelly are among the stars lining up to guest on Lil Jon's upcoming hip-hop/rock hybrid, "Crunk Rock." The artist hopes to release the TVT set before the end of the year but a date has yet to be confirmed.

"I worked with the guitar player from P.O.D., Marcos, a punk band called Whole Wheat Bread from Jacksonville, Fla., Kid Rock and a few others," Lil' Jon tells Billboard.com. "My ***** is real rock guitars with my beats, not keyboard guitars with ghetto beats. It's gonna be a little different from what you hear right now, but I think everyone will love it."

The half-rock, half-hip-hop set will also feature Remy Ma, Lil Wayne, The Game, Gucci Mane, Fabo from D4L and Three 6 Mafia.

As far as other rap groups using rock elements in their music recently, Jon says he's pleased that they can open their minds up to rock. "I've been doing crunk rock for the past two years," he says. "I did a street record with Three 6 Mafia in October where I say 'Party like a rock star, ***** like a porn star.' Now everybody wants to be a rock star 'cause it's cool."

"One thing I like is people are opening [our] ears to the music, 'cause [we] tend to be closed-minded to ***** we don't know about," he cotinues. "It might make a motherf**ker that don't listen to rock go listen to some Guns N' Roses."

Kill me please.

I know Jon's heart is in the right place (trying to broaden the horizons of the street), but could his ass be anymore "Hey, new trend! Now let me milk the s*** outta it!"

Halle's a good actress, but she's not fully aware of her weaknesses. She's great at play downtrodden, wronged, and weak characters. Even her "sassy female" is fun. She just has a hard time playing women of strength; she doesn't have that air about her. That's why everyone complains about her Storm, but everyone loved her Queen.

This role was written for a white women and she fought to get the role so you can't blame her for the casting, she's really the only black A-list actress (other than Queen Latifah maybe) so if she wants to do high profile movies, she's going to have to do some roles written for white women, because there are very few roles written for black women

yes she does. i agree with surfdui, she getting older(still attractive for her age) but shes also black. there are better black actreses then her(angella bassat,Gabrielle union, etc) actresses, who won't show there breasts or do rape scenes like halle did. so yeah, halle is one of those actress who she basically bare some skin in order to get work.

Looking at the debate. It pretty much comes down to the fact that Halle Berry can't control who gets cast for what. Monster's Ball whole plot revolved around the interracial relationship, so that is a given that the male lead would be white. Benicio is Hispanic, and don't really know what the problem is here, the fact that he's not black? I don't think she was romantically involved with Bruce Willis character in that movie they did. I wouldn't know, I don't watch crap. And why even bring up the crapfest that is Catwoman.

Now let's talk about the black actors he brings up: Denzel, Isaiah Washington, Tyrese, Morris Chestnut.

Denzel usually does movies where females have small and unimportant roles. The latest one he did with a strong female role was Inside Man, and in that case if a director, in this case Spike Lee has a choice between Halle and Jodie Foster, I think Spike would look beyond color and pick the best actress.

Isaiah Washington? Seriously? He's not even that big, he's best known for calling someone a ******. Either way, he wants to stick to indies and is working on a documentary on Sierra Leone.

Tyrese? All he plays are thugged out, stereotypical black roles. Halle doesn't want to be in those type of movies.

I agree. She's pretty enough where she doesn't have to also. She just obviously isn't afraid to do films where she's nude, and there are actors of ALL races who do so. I don't think Halle did any tasteless nudity, it was all for interesting roles.

Actually, J. Lo is really big with the Latino community again. She kind of forgot her roots for awhile and fell out of favor with Latinos but ever since she got with Marc Anthony she's been more focused on that market and has been doing very well with it. She may not be as big in the mainstream these days, but she's definitely big again with the Latin community. Sort of begs the question "What sort of success would Halle find if she were to focus back on her roots more?".

Like P. Mooney says "Don't get too fond of me...cause white folk will take you. They took Michael Jackson, they took Lionel Richie, they took James Brown..they gave him back"

She could focus more, but the projects are just not there.:csad: -she's done BAPS already.

I don't think Halle has done any black romantic comedies either.

Halle got her early fame doing black romantic comedies. Strictly Business, Boomerang, ring a bell?

Hey what about Sanaa Lathan? She only bones white dudes in her most recent movies/tv show appearances.:o :o

Don't be hating on my future wife. I loves me some Sanaa.

She's done quite a few movies with romantic storylines opposite brothas:
The Best Man, The Wood, and Brown Sugar opp. Taye Diggs*
Love & Basketball opp. Omar Epps
Out of Time opp. Denzel Washington

*Yes, I know his hood pass is long revoked, but I count him.

Anyone find it weird that Disney is the most watched Cable channel among black america:confused:
http://targetmarketnews.com/storyid07260701.htm

Actually, I kinda am. Not because of race, but I'm surprised anyone still watches that s**ty network. :o

Cuba Gooding Jr.

He kinda sucks now. He was good back in the day. :(

Yeah, I thought he was great in Men of Honor and...well, okay, Men of Honor. Dirty looked pretty good, too, but that probably made just slightly less then $6.82 at the box office. :csad:

Oh, and one thing I noticed, might spark some controversy here, hot topic issue back in the day, but I find it strange:

I heard this while listening to Bill Hicks, but I checked Wikipedia and it appears to be true.

Apparently, one of the officers that beat the living crap out of Rodney King back in the 90s was named Stacey Koon. KOON.

Certainly, it was a messed up case, but I just found that ironic and hilarious. :woot:

How many movies are made with a black man and a white woman in a romance??? Case-in-point:

Hitch: The Plot

A male "consultant," Alex 'Hitch' Hitchens (played by Will Smith), teaches socially inept men how to attract beautiful women. In three dates, he promises, these men will win the hearts of the (previously untouchable) women they most desire. When it comes to his own love life, however, Hitch just hasn't gotten...well, hitched! A chance meeting with Sara (played by Eva Mendes) - an anti-dating journalist for a gossip magazine - quickly reveals that it's not always as easy to practice what you preach.

Behind the Scenes

Will Smith quickly attracted international attention when during a promotion tour for his movie, he made visible, the usually invisible issue of hollywood's handling of race when he said, "There's sort of an accepted myth that if you have two black actors, a male and a female, in the lead of a romantic comedy then people around the world don't want to see it. We spend $50-something million making this movie and the studio would think that was tough on their investment. So the idea of a black actor and a white actress comes up - that'll work around the world, but it's a problem in the US."

Apparently, given the romantic nature of the relationship between the two main characters, Hollywood felt that a Black leading male and female would have immediately relegated "Hitch" to "Black Movie" status. Actress Nia Long acknowledged this issue when she said, "two black characters equals a black film and not just a movie about two people." On the other hand, a Black leading male paired with a White leading female would have outraged the American public. And so, they went with a member of the largest minority group in America - a beautiful Latina actress whose looks are exotic enough to draw attention from men across all demographics, light enough to ensure her origin would not be confused with that of an African-American, and yet, dark enough that her relationship with an African-American male would not threaten those whose feathers would otherwise be ruffled by such a pairing.

Omayra Zaragoza Cruz, a writer for points to the continued influence of D.W. Griffith's "The Birth of a Nation" - a 1915 controversial film that shaped the handling of race, especially as it pertains to interracial sex.

"Set during Civil War Reconstruction, the film dramatizes a perceived threat to white womanhood and, by extension, white culture as a whole from black men. In addition to spiking membership in the Klan, the film sparked enormous protest for its depiction of black men as sexual predators and is credited with establishing the stereotype of the "black buck" (Donald Bogle, Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies & Bucks: An Interpretive History of Blacks in American Films, 3rd Edition 1994). The image of black masculinity as sexually out of control is one that mainstream black actors have had to contend with ever since."You might argue that other movies have casted African-American males opposite White women, but have you really paid attention to the nature of their relationships in those movies? I remember watching Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts in "Pelican Brief," waiting the entire movie to see if they would eventually kiss. Their hug in the final scene was hugely disappointing and terribly frustrating as I strongly suspected that had Denzel been White, the movie's ending would surely have been different. Dezel, was again paired with another Hollywood siren - Angelina Jolie - in "Bone Collector." This time, his quadriplegic status resolved any confusion about how to handle the romantic aspect almost any other casting arrangement might have had.

An interesting debate. I too think Halle has chosen some shady roles in the past. It really annoyed me when the first ever bond sex scene involved her! Thats one of the many things i liked about bond, the fact that sex was always suggested but never shown.

I just think the problem with not many black actors and actresses together on screen is the fact that its hard enough for one black person to get a leading role. Not alone two!

Maybe Denzel, Isaiah, Tyrese, Morris and others don't want to work with HER. Ever considered that? ;)

jag

In that movie with Denzel and Julia Roberts their charcaters where supposed to kiss, but apparantly denzel didn't want to. He probabley knew some black people would be up in arms that he was kissing a white woman on screen and it would alienate his audience because his one of the most respected black actors among the black community. so racial sensitivity goes both ways.

Speaking of Pelican Brief, one of the many flaws with the film version of Along Came a Spider that really ticked me off, the complete omission of the Cross/Flannigan romance. Part of this is the fact that they cast Morgan Freeman as Cross in Kiss the Girls in the first place. Cross is supposed to be in his early to mid thiries!! He lives with his Grandmother and has two kids in kindergarten!

I do have two guys in my family married to white women, and we went down to Louisville for the reunion I mentioned earlier. Most of the younger people, both black and white, could care less, but some of the older ones do stare for a minute when they see them together. I think it's just the older generation that seriously has an issue with it. If it's someone younger it could be jealousy or something, I couldn't even tell you.
