1. No "skank" factor. Very classy.

Check. SWV were a controversial group...but they were never skanks.

2. Very sexy.

Check.

I don't think anyone would deny that SWV had serious sex appeal--sexuality that was especially prevalent in their songs which opened doors that other girl groups never had the courage to walk through--including En Vogue. They weren't overly made up, but they had the big asses, sang about the joys of eating you-know-what and were damn proud of it. They were round the way black girls that most thugs could identify with...

4. Had cross-over appeal.

Check. Or have you forgotten the hot summer of 1993 when "Weak" AND "I'm So Into You" were at the No. 1 and No. 6 spots on the Hot 100 in the same week? And don't get me started on the crossover smashes in "Right Here/Human Nature", "You're The One" and especially "Can We."

SWV had greater crossover success than En Vogue. That's why Pop stations still play their music. Every time I go to an Amusement Park I find white girls recording "Weak" karoke style. En Vogue isn't even on those playlists bub.

Heh.

5. Made onto TV shows like ROC, In Living Color, SNL and more.........

Again, check. SWV made appearances on many shows both as characters and as guests. Too many to type--but if you make me, I will.

6. Had a least 3 hit albums.

*sigh*

CHECKmate.

SWV had five hit albums, which resulted in sales in access of 20 million records sold, including two DOUBLE-platinum singles ("Weak" and "You're The One"--they were the first to accomplish this) and nearly a dozen other gold and platinum Top 10 Pop & R&B singles.

SWV can't swang none of that.

As you can see above, they already did. Granted, En Vogue comes close, but the proof is in the numbers baby boy. Check your local RIAA or Billboard mags and other authorities. You'll find that both TLC and SWV had totally eclipsed En Vogue by the mid-90s' in sales and crossover appeal.

At this time the biggest selling black girl groups of the modern era (sans The Supremes) are (1) Destiny's Child, (2) TLC and (3) SWV respectively. En Vogue's triple-platinum 1993 effort Funky Divas album wasn't enough to put them into that pantheon--even though they paved the way for the above mentioned.

Just stating the facts...I know my R&B history. :hyper:

She was talking about being broke and homeless after SWV split up and prostituting herself...it was sad:csad::csad::csad::csad:

Man, that's some sad news. I really hate to hear stories like that.

Well, that is true Manic; I agree with you there. En Vogue was brilliant (and don't let my love for SWV decieve you, I've collected every vestige of EV's stuff too--they are both my favorite groups). SWV had only one lead singer in Coko, although the other two girls did share the mic on the latter albums. But Taj and LeLee were not vocalists though, only Coko had that distinction. However, Taj and LeLee did sound good together though.

Voices??? It takes more than calling yourselves "Sisters With Voices". Envogue's vocal range blows them out of the room.
Brandy brought that quivery chipmunk style singing in and SWV just continued that trend.

Did SWV ever appear on any MTV award shows?? I don't remember them. Talk about cross-over??

She looks like a horse? Oh come on now, you're being nasty (which tells me you don't have much of a point since you have to resort to that ;) ) Need I remind you that Maxine was not exactly the hottest thing either. Sex appeal is not always tied to physical beauty.

And I never said they trounced En Vogue vocally. En Vogue probably outclasses everyone--including Destiny's Child. But SWV was not shabby on the vocals. And by the way:

1.) Brandy doesn't have a "chipmunk quivery" vocal style--she has a deep, breathy voice

2.) SWV came out long before Brandy, a good 3 years earlier. Coko was the first to start that vocal trend, which had record labels scrambling to find their own answer to the sound in groups like Xscape (with Tiny) and the aforementioned Total, to name a few.

3.) Yes, SWV appeared on several MTV shows--both during the day slots (i.e. with Bellamy during his show) and especially during their MTV Awards segments. Their last vocal performance was with actor Will Smith in 1997.

For four of their albums they also hit all the major talk show circuits, including Jay Leno, Regis & Kathy Lee, The Today Show, Jenny Jones, The Arsenio Hall Show (which they eventually hosted), SNL, The RuPaul Show and many, many more. They also played themselves on a sindicated comedy show (the name escapes me right now) and New York Undercover. So yeah, they did crossover. Big time. And just as much--if not more--than En Vogue.

I realize you may not like them--and that's fine. But I'm not going to discount their contributions to R&B music. Look them up on the net: they aren't heralded as one of the genre's most influential girl groups of all time for nothing.

Anything else? Oh....an update: http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1534522/20060616/marvelous_3.jhtml

A Black Captain Marvel?

The Rock on Shazam!

Superhero films are all the rage now, and new ideas are popping up everyday. But one film, one character, has been talked about forever – and I mean forever. That would be Captain Marvel.

So who's going to play the DC Comics man of red and yellow – not The Flash? Well, it could be none other than Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. Today, during a visit to the set of Get Smart, Johnson was wide eyed when the very idea was brought up to re-team with director Peter Segal in the feature, Shazam!

According to Johnson himself, he's spoken to Pete about the role. "Yeah, he did. Listen, John August is writing the script and he's a tremendous writer, and I'll just wait for the script to come in. But I'd love to work with Pete again, and certainly would want to work with John August. So there's a strong possibility."

Are we going to see The Rock in tights? "Well, knowing Pete, he'd update it and make it fresh," Johnson says. "But that's his question; he's very excited about the project and talks about it passionately. Pete also understands the importance of getting that right; he's a big comic book fan."

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/05/CaptainMarvel.jpg/250px-CaptainMarvel.jpg

I think casting Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Captain Marvel would be a stroke of effing genius. Think about it: He has the physique, the facial features and the height to pull off Marvel's look to a science. How many actors embody as much? Plus--and most importantly--he's a solid actor that is respected in both the media and by moviegoing audiences.

As far as his color--he is a multicultural man and has distinct features that could certainly work. He'd...well, ROCK in the role. In fact, I always thought he'd make a good updated version of Superman (although we all know many Supe fans would have cows if they knew their icon had even a pint of black blood coursing through his veins--as if Kryptonian = white :whatever: ).

^Technically, he has the body and look, as Puddy aka Patrick Warburton is a little too old for it now. And Marvel and Black Adam are based in Egyptian type lore, so I wouldn't have issue with it. Most kids would love it, but the few fans that are into Marvel from the old days would throw a fit.

Black Adam is supposed to be Middle Eastern as well, I believe. I could see him playing either role, to be honest, but he's can carry that cockiness of Black Adam really well. Then again, I could see him pulling off a little kid (Batson) in a super-powered adult's body as well. I think he'd be funner to watch as Black Adam, personally, though.

This lawsuit:

Beyonce pulls album due to lawsuit

courtesy of NME.comWed Apr 25, 8:00 AM ET

Beyonce has been forced to delete a special version of her current album--following legal problems.

As previously reported, the singer is in the process of being sued by singer Des'Ree following allegations that she did not get permission to cover a song called "I'm Kissing You" on B Day - Deluxe Edition.

Allegedly a deal to use the song did not come to fruition, but Beyonce re-recorded the song as "Still in Love (Kissing You)" and made a video.

Beyonce's legal team state that it was only a month before B Day - Deluxe Edition's release--on March 3--that they had a "confirmation letter and license request."

However, the Royalty Network's lawyers answered her request by submitting a counter proposal in which they granted permission to use the song within certain limits. These included the specification that they could not use the song in video form and that the title of the song would not be changed, reports MTV News.

The Royalty Network's lawyers said that "despite follow-ups" they didn't hear back from Beyonce's team. They alleged that on March 27, despite their protests, they discovered that the singer planned to proceed with their plans to include a video of the song with a different title on her album anyway.

In a letter to Beyonce's lawyer, the Royalty Network called the move "completely unacceptable."

The Royalty Network came to an agreement with the singer on April 16 that her record company would "engage in no further distribution" of the album or video anthology until at least a preliminary injunction hearing on May 4. They are also seeking $150,000 in damages.

Speaking about Des'Ree's song earlier this year, Beyonce said: "It was one of my all-time favorite songs. It gives you this emotion--I don't care who you are, you just feel it. So I just did it for myself--a lot of songs, I do like that--and I let people hear it and they were like, 'You are crazy, you have to put it on the album.' So I did. It was a last-minute decision."

No allegory. No coded language. Matter of fact, tell me where the codes are.

Shouldn't you be at least a student of the Bible before you rattle off about it being allegory? And who are you gonna get to teach you? Someone who thinks it's allegory? I hope not. What good is that? What if you're wrong? I am a student of the Bible. I teach it and train others.

I know enough about the bible to know its allegorical.

The persons who I will get to teach me are students of it and people who have demonstrated it, so I'm not worried about being wrong, especially since my intentions are sincere in its studies, so I believe G-d will bless me in my understanding of it. But its your choice to deny its allegorical nature and take at all literally if you want.

Here's some good research material while you're waiting.
http://www.carm.org/questions/trustbible.htm
http://www.carm.org/questions/rewritten.htm

I think people pull the "allegory" card on passages they don't like, in both books. All the violent things in the Koran become allegory, not real commands and all of the things that are called sin in the Bible are allegory.

I agree not everyone. Be we have to be at least intellectually honest about where it is and where it is not. We can't take the passages that make us sqimish and allegorize them. Muslims always allegorize the passages that call for the deaths of infidels. Christians don't allegorize the killiings found in the Old Testament. They happened for a reason.

The Bible does use allegory for sure. But it's not to try and cover over passages that make people squirm or cover the frailties and short-comings of the people of God. Allegory is also never used to explain away things that God did in His righteous judgement of sin. Allegory is used mainly in prophetic books (Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel etc ) and the poetic books of scripture....(Song of Solomon, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiates ).

The perfect man was Jesus. The foundation of the Christian faith is laid upon him. And all men can learn from it. Not just special men of understanding. That's because the Christian God wants a relationship with every man. And how that is gained is in the Bible. So why hide it? If he hides it, then men can't find Him.

Thanks

You're a pretty smart dude Raybia. I like your scholarly approach. When do you punch the allegory button when reading the Koran? And how often do you read it??

But why would God make it so hard for you to get at what he is trying to tell you? You ever ask yourself that? That's a lot of hoops to jump thru. The Bible isn't that hard to understand. Just open it up and go relax under a shade tree. Most of it is historical accounts...stories of real people. Heck more movies have been made from the Bible than from any religious book. Why? Because the stories are easy to comprehend. Samson fell for the beauty of an evil woman and disobeyed God. He suffered for that....etc....etc... we can learn a lesson from that. But it was not allegory.

Certainly there are some basic lessons that can be learn on the surface of these studies but there is alot of symbolism there to that provides a much more deep meaning and insights.

God bless you. Let me know how that Bible class goes.

Actually G-d is telling us, that the Quran, which we as Muslims believe to be G-d's word and guidance to mankind, has knowledge for the common person to will assist him in his or her life. But G-d is also telling us that if we are willing to be obedient to him and study and ponder his guidance, then there is much more that can be provided to bless us to be success in life.

Like anything that is worth having, you have to work for it. Its not jumping thru hoops if a person has to put forth the hard work to get thru 8 to 10 years of formal education to become a success doctor. So its not jumping thru hoops to put forth an concentrated effort to correct learn G-d's message to mankind if the payoff in total success in our life, both in this world and the hereafter.

Depending on your religious beliefs, it's wrong to destroy the written name of the Lord. So to avoid that risk, when some people write the name "God", they don't write the whole thing. That way, if an online post or a piece of paper is ever deleted or burned, the word/name "God" won't have been destroyed.

At least that's my understanding.

Raybia, why do you keep taking the "o" out of God? It's not exactly a censored word here?

so the name wont be "slandered" or such, if I am not mistaken.

most Jewish people do it as well.

Some Muslim communities in the U.S. have chosen to follow the lead of Jewish communities who also leave out the "o".

http://judaism.about.com/od/reformjudaismfaq/f/god_spelling.htm

In our community the spelling of G-d for “god” is used for when referencing or mentioning our Creator to avoid the spelling “God”, which in reverse spells “Dog”. We feel that it is disrespectful for us to have a spelling for our Creator that reminds the reader of a dog.

No offense towards those who do spell it out, that is just our preference.

The whole Shazam and Hawkman mythos is deeply rooted in Egyptian culture.

The Rock could certainly pass for Egyptian--he has features like one of my older cousins who actually lives in Cairo.

Yeah....he's already done that Scorpion King thing............

Raybia says: I know enough about the bible to know its allegorical.

The persons who I will get to teach me are students of it and people who have demonstrated it, so I'm not worried about being wrong, especially since my intentions are sincere in its studies, so I believe G-d will bless me in my understanding of it. But its your choice to deny its allegorical nature and take at all literally if you want.

You're not a student of scripture but you know it's allegorical. ok.

Well.........how do you know that? Where did you get that from? Which parts? All of it? What?

I didn't say I wasn't a student of scripture, I said I wasn't a student of the Bible, but the more I think about it, even that is not true as by no means am I ignorant of the Bible and I have read and studied various verses and hopefully in the near future I will be doing a comprehensive study of it.

Which makes it different from Christianity where God wants you to call him by name. He actually wants a personal loving relationship with his followers.

Romans 8:14-16
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.

We may spell it G-d but we pronounce it as God. However Muslims use the name Allah. Many Muslims will use the two words interchangable since we are referring to the same Supreme Being.

You're not a student of scripture but you know it's allegorical. ok.

Well.........how do you know that? Where did you get that from? Which parts? All of it? What?

Because I read.

Why would you be surprised that a Muslim believes that the Bible should not be completely taken literally when many in Christianity feel the same way?

Why would there be so much scholarship done of interpreting the bible if it is so straightword in its literal meaning and why are there so many versions of the Bible and why are there so many different demoninations?

By the way, are you a conservative Christian since you hold the position that you do about the bible?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_literalism

History
Biblical interpretations that were considered literalist have changed through history. For example: Saint Augustine, (4th century), claimed that the entire Bible should be interpreted as literally as possible, but his own interpretation of the book of Genesis was made in such a way that would be considered "allegorical" by many modern readers[9] (see Augustine's interpretation of Genesis).

In modern times the term has been used pejoratively. Hyers, professor of comparative religion at Gustavus Adolphus college in St. Peter, Minnesota criticized this as "a mentality [that] manifests itself [not] only in conservative churches, private-school enclaves, television programs of the evangelical right, and a considerable amount of Christian bookstore material; one often finds a literalist understanding of Bible and faith being assumed by those who have no religious inclinations, or who are avowedly antireligious in sentiment. Even in educated circles the possibility of more sophisticated theologies... is easily obscured by burning straw effigies of biblical literalism."[10]

Experts in the field such as Steve Falkenberg, Ph.D, professor of religious psychology, note, "I've never met anyone who actually believes the Bible is literally true. I know a bunch of people who say they believe the Bible is literally true but nobody is actually a literalist." [11] "Taken literally, the Bible says the earth is flat and setting on pillars and cannot move (1 Chr 16:30, Ps 93:1, Ps 96:10, 1 Sam 2:8, Job 9:6). It says that great sea monsters are set to guard the edge of the sea (Job 41, Ps 104:26)..."

Literalism, inerrancy and grammatical-historical
It is commonly taught in the most conservative Christian seminaries[12] that certain sections of the Bible should be interpreted as literal statements of the author and are not intended as parable. These include creation in Genesis, the flooding of the entire world in Genesis, the lifespans as enumerated by genealogies of Genesis, the historicity of the narrative accounts of Ancient Israel, the supernatural intervention of God in history, and Jesus' miracles [13][14] These views however do not contend the literalistic values that parables, metaphors and allegory are not existent in the Bible [15][16] but rather relies on contextual interpretations based on the author's intention. [17]

As a part of Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy[6] conservative Christian scholarship affirms the following:

"WE AFFIRM the necessity of interpreting the Bible according to its literal, or normal, sense. The literal sense is the grammatical-historical sense, that is, the meaning which the writer expressed. Interpretation according to the literal sense will take account of all figures of speech and literary forms found in the text.

WE DENY the legitimacy of any approach to Scripture that attributes to it meaning which the literal sense does not support."

Noted inerrantist Norman Geisler in his commentary on the Chicago Statement on Biblical Hermeneutics states: "The literal sense of Scripture is strongly affirmed here. To be sure the English word literal carries some problematic connotations with it. Hence the words normal and grammatical-historical are used to explain what is meant. The literal sense is also designated by the more descriptive title grammatical-historical sense. This means the correct interpretation is the one which discovers the meaning of the text in its grammatical forms and in the historical, cultural context in which the text is expressed." [18]

Arguments against Biblical literalism
Bible scholars, even those who are theologically conservative, agree that parables should not be taken literally. [19]
"Biblical literalism contributes to a lot of mental illness" [20]
"Biblical literalism commits a seductive form of idolatry."[21]
Biblical literalists are heretics [22]
Biblical literalism conflicts with the cultural context of scriptures. [23]
Biblical literalism is akin to sexism. [24]
Taking a literalist stance on biblical violence promotes violence. [25]

A Black Captain Marvel?

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/05/CaptainMarvel.jpg/250px-CaptainMarvel.jpg

I think casting Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Captain Marvel would be a stroke of effing genius. Think about it: He has the physique, the facial features and the height to pull off Marvel's look to a science. How many actors embody as much? Plus--and most importantly--he's a solid actor that is respected in both the media and by moviegoing audiences.

http://www.dennisblackwell.com/modfab/hgb/rock1.jpg
http://celebrities-reality.com/celebrities/15%20the%20rock/rock01.jpg

As far as his color--he is a multicultural man and has distinct features that could certainly work. He'd...well, ROCK in the role. In fact, I always thought he'd make a good updated version of Superman (although we all know many Supe fans would have cows if they knew their icon had even a pint of black blood coursing through his veins--as if Kryptonian = white :whatever: ).

Your thoughts?

I would pray every night for The Rock to be Captain Marvel.
It'd be great, and I love The Rock.

Definitely.

More of my mom's favorite music, but my favorite artists were probably Salt-N-Pepa, BLACKstreet, Bobby Brown, Keith Sweat, and Bell Biv DeVoe. Man, the 90's had the best music, as far as I'm concerned.

Actually New Jack started about 1987! Teddy Riley and Gene Griffin were producing behind the scenes:

Everything Teddy touched turned to Gold! Actually I think the 80's were the best time for music.

Some New Jack imitators showed up too.

I think it fizzled in about '93 with the demise of the Tonies and Joe Public.......

It zenithed during Teddy's reign between '87 to ' 90.

Sorry to hear that. But you got some great memories to cherish. Women today don't realize that a child's best memories are in the kitchen. Most women can't cook anymore. And don't want to learn, either. I feel they are truly depriving their kids of those memories.

My mom sounds like your Grandma. I can cook because I watched her! But I have great memories in our kitchen! She's still alive.

She was a great lady, no doubt about it. I was lucky to not only have two grandmothers who were both amazing cooks but a mother who mastered what they both knew and then improved upon their already considerable culinary talents. It's a wonder I didn't get fat growing up. :D Now I'm blessed to be married to a woman who's not only gorgeous and a perfect match for me, but loves to cook and is outstanding at it. My mother-in-law is an amazing cook as well. Through them I'm getting to experience some delicious foods and dishes that are pretty new to me, since they're Dominican. Carribean food is something else. It's a wonder I'm not fat! :D

I hear you, though, about kids being deprived of one of the joys of growing up. There's really nothing like mom's cooking and I still jump at the chance to eat a meal my mother made. Some of my fondest memories as a child revolve around food, particularly where special occasions like Christmas or Easter are involved. I still remember making cookies for Halloween with my whole family; great times. I look at my brother-in-law's wife and feel sorry for him and his kids. She doesn't cook. Ever. Every single meal is had at a restaurant (a lot of fast food for those kids, unfortunately). He just got out of the Navy, though, and is now home more often so hopefully he'll make some changes there. Those kids will never have the memory of eating their mother's cooking because she doesn't cook. Ever.

I lived in a mostly latin neighborhood at the time and the latin girls were so pretty when I got into high school they were even finer; I didn't start liking black girls until I moved to the suburbs. How many of you blackies are, or have ever dated outside of your race? And what did your people(read: family, friends) think of it, and vice versa? I'm casually talking to the korean chick(we won't get all into that). Most girls I've been out with have been black, sans a couple mexican girls that were already so ghetto fabulous they didn't count as interracial apparantly. :o

Dated? No. Relations? YES! :woot: White, hispanic, a nice little Italian Arabian mix. But, my friends don't discriminate as well. I think I'm the only one, between me and my 2 brothers, to date outside of my race. I'm the middle child...the eclectic 1. :oldrazz:

Are me and my little sister the only black people on the planet who find yams disgusting?

Ugh. Chitlins. Ugh. BBQ's pigs feet actually aren't all that bad, really, though. An ice cold Rolling Rock makes 'em taste pretty good.

There are certain things that have a culturaly unfavorable lean in regards to black americans (i.e. Donald Faizon :whatever: ) This is one thing where I'm willing to chalk up to coincidence. Take the names Bruce...maybe notsomuch bruce, but Rex, or Dirk, or some other american names that have some queer conitation NOW, but back when they were just names ya dig. DL is a cool sounding name-(save DL Hughley, which in his last T.V. outing seemed a little out of pace learning his lines w/ that assinie Aaron Sorkin dialogue that was so lame the second time around)

It just happens to be the brotha, and I'll bet, that Tim Kring, which is the creater of Heroe's and did Misfits of Science in the '80's (also w/ a venarable black lead) had this in mind a year or two ago, just cause were' just now getting to know his characters.
