Has anyone talked about BET yet?

Criticism
Many prominent media critics, including Public Enemy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Enemy) rapper Chuck D (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_D),journalist George CurryHoward University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Howard_University), writer Keith Boykin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Boykin),comic book writer/artist/editor Christopher Priest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Priest), filmmaker Spike Lee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spike_Lee) and writer/cartoonist Aaron McGruder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_McGruder) of The Boondocks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boondocks), have protested BET's programming and actions. One of the most commonly-heard complaints is the fact that BET's programming is mostly music entertainment, particularly Hip-hop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hip_hop_music) and rap music, and does not focus on the public affairs of the black community.

The channel has been scrutinized by members of the black (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_people) and African-American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African-American) communities who feel that the channel perpetuates harmful Black stereotypes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stereotypes) by primarily airing hip-hop videos that often have misogynistic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misogynistic), materialistic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Materialistic), and/or violent (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violent) themes. As a result, BET heavily censors suggestive content from the videos that it airs, often with entire verses removed from certain rap videos. Detractors are also quick to point out the irony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irony) they see in the network's choice to also show strong religious programming once a week, although they fail to realize that religious programming also airs Monday through Saturday on the network from 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. (EST) in addition to the Sunday programming. Some educational programming like Season of the Tiger (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Season_of_the_Tiger) and College Hill (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/College_Hill_%28TV_series%29) that display black people in an intelligent, positive point of view have also aired on the channel. Not long ago, people began referring to the acronym BET as standing for "Black Exploitation Television."[citation needed] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citing_sources)

Outside of the black community, the Parents Television Council (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parents_Television_Council) has also criticized BET for indecent content and racial stereotypes in general. Following radio talk-show host Don Imus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Imus)'s racist comments (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Imus#Remarks_lead_to_cancellation_of_show) about black women leading to his firing, PTC founder L. Brent Bozell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L._Brent_Bozell) in his column questioned why Imus's remarks led to massive protest among the black community yet music videos on BET "running raunchy rap videos full of N-words (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/******) and 'ho (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whore)' references" received less protest. BET has been criticized by some Christian evangelicals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelicals) not primarily for music videos, but for its morning religious lineup. Each morning, BET broadcasts evangelical TV shows, and hosts include Robert Tilton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Tilton), Don Stewart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Stewart), and Peter Popoff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Popoff), who have been criticized for their money-brings-miracles theology (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theology) and who have had spats with the law (Popoff's ministry's tax-exempt status (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax-exempt_status) was recently revoked in Canada (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada)).

Teen Summit was a great show as well.........
I think they even had a Hollywood gossip show.

They really have lost their way. They use to be relevant. But now there's nothing but booty shakin' and cheap black ploitation movies...

It's too easy at this point to take shots at BET. Everything that's needed to be said has been, but no one wants to hear.

I will say, though, I looking forward to the animated programming they're venturing into. They've got some pretty interesting projects lined up in that regard.

Do we as men of color have a different opinion than white men as to what a nice butt looks like?

I asked because me and my friend (who's white) were at a bookstore and he saw this girl and he goes "look at that ass" then I looked her and said "what ass?".

See, I'd Kylie Minogue has a nice butt. She just don't got no fat booty. She don't got a "Biel", that's for sure.

If you can't tell where the back ends and the legs begin, that's a problem.

And it's not so much that they have an ass like, say, Buffy the Body or something, but every now and then, you see a becky with a booty and it's strange. I'm usually just impressed if they have a nice ass in profile.

For example:

Common Whitegirl Booty (aka - The Saddest ****ing Thing The World!!)
http://www.celebrityornot.info/people/kristen_bell/kristen_bell_fa6_shahel_kristen_bell_self08071938_ 0007_2SyX9HK.sized.jpg

Then you've got what I call, "The Biel"

http://hdoweu.269g.net/image/55868651.jpg

Not necessarily huge, but there's some good curvature back there that you don't usually see on beckys. And she works hers out, so she's trying to make it more pronounced.

terry78
05-24-2007, 02:29 PM

It's tough because I lot of factors go into what certain races perceive as beautiful. Certain cultures, especially in Africa, saw a woman's girth as a sign of wealth and prestige. And over time, the attraction remained even after wealth and prestige stopped being a factor.

I think for caucasians and asians, a lot of other factors came into play throughout history, as there was a time with the Greeks, Romans, and Europeans liked their women "healthy" as well. Look at Renaissance art. They're definitely of the fleshy variety.

That's my point...to give her uh...another point of interest. Which actually brings up a sensitive topic that I'm ready to discuss it if ya'll are game:

Why are African American men and women percieved to be disinterested in going downtown? Is this a sterotype? Even some of my white co-workers have said they didn't think Black People enjoyed it. Now, oral sex is arguably one of the most satisfying activities in the bedroom, yet I hear black women all the time claim how they refuse to go down on their man ("That is so nasty!") And I've heard not too many cats in the Barber shop say they won't taste the pastry either ("I don't like fish!").

My question is are people lying to "save face" with their peers and secretly doing it on the side? Or does the black culture generally frown on fellatio?

Superman79
05-25-2007, 01:49 PM
Or does the black culture generally frown on fellatio?

wow...just wow.

In all seriousness, (at least from the cornfed whiteboy POV) I don't think it's a race thing as much as it may be a region thing. Here in the mid-west (the REAL midwest Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Illinois...NOT Minnesota) both my black and my white buddies have no problem doing the below the belt makeout with their gals. Hell most of us enjoy it (mostly because SHE does ;)...and that sparks some um..."goodwill")

As for ladies...well, I try to avoid listening to such conversations when women have them...just doesn't seem gentlemanly to listen in. :woot:

terry78
05-25-2007, 01:51 PM
We don't like to be deemed as freaky outside the bedroom for some reason, I guess. We're already labeled with the stigma of being sex crazed, so who knows.

There are just some subjects that seem to be "taboo" for people of color. That's one of them. Another one I can think of is taking medication. It seems like some don't want to admit they take meds for things like depression or any other mental illness, whereas other cultures (say caucasians for example) have no problems admitting they see shrinks or take prozac.

That's a great question. Whitney definitely has a better/commanding voice. She also has many great songs (The Bodyguard Soundtrack anyone?) and many later hits. Mariah Carey, is debatable depending on who you ask, at least for me. My mom says that all Mariah does is scream and talks sexy. Sometimes I agree, and sometimes I don't. I do have nostalgia towards Mariah for hits like "Honey" and so on. I'm not sure who sold the most albums (May some enlighten me?), but I do think that Mariah did appeal more to the younger audience than Whitney did.

Too bad Whitney Houston turned and is currently a walking train wreck. Crazy as hell life on Bobby Brown's show, divorcing him, being a crack addict, turning into Skeletor, and now dating some dude who is 287498 years younger than she is. However, Mariah was on top, dropped off the face of the planet, then came back on top out of nowhere. Her newest album was one of the biggest hits of the year and she had nominations for 94837763535 different music awards. Her life never became a train wreck.

IMO, Whitney Houston made a bigger impact, with her amazing/commanding voice, as well as earning awards left and right. She was more successful than Mariah back in her heyday. None of these are my personal favorites, though.

So here's an inquiry for debate: Which of the above Divas do you think made the greatest impact on Pop and R&B history? And which was your personal favorite?

Mariah for me. I don't really like Whitney's voice all that much. She sounds great on some songs, but on others I don't like the tone. I Have Nothing is brilliant, but I can't stand I Will Always Love you. IMO, she butchered that song. I much prefer Dolly's original.

Mariah has some great hits too. My All, Honey, Always Be My Baby, and that beautiful song with Boys II Men. And all number ones to boot. Plus, everyone sings along to O.D.B.s verse in Fantasy. "Me and Mariiaaaah. Go back like babies and pacifiiiiya."

I guess Whitney made the most impact though.

Granted both woman screamed at each other in that Prince Of Egypt song.

My question is are people lying to "save face" with their peers and secretly doing it on the side? Or does the black culture generally frown on fellatio?

I think guys in general don't really like saying out loud that they like going down on chicks. Regardless of race.

I dunno.

I have mixed feelings about mental health. People with Real problems like schizophrenia and stuff like that should seek help. Depression to a certain extent is a natural emotion that everyone feels in their lives and popping a bunch of prozac pills isn't the best way to really deal with it.

I chill with a couple of them, but most of the time they like to just go out and do shots at one of the bars after work, or go play hackeysack at some park or something like that, and that's not really my thing. Also, maybe I'm the only one who thinks this, it seems to me like if you're white you can go your entire life without ever meeting someone of a different race or background and that's considered okay.

But if you're a person of color, you automatically have to experience what it's like to be around white folks; I guess being that they make up a majority of the population.

True....as the news clip said. Bad grammar goes across racial lines. But...blacks suffer more for using it. As most blacks know, your skin can still be a problem to "some" people in power. Therefore, we have to be twice as good as the white counterpart. Not fair.....but in some cases very true. So I was pleased to see the brotha' schooling his own. Helping them to be better. What a shame.....some of those kids had never heard that stuff before he came into their class!!

I don't know, but I'm ALL ABOUT "going downtown"!! I mean, before I started doing anything in general, I never thought I'd be the type to do that specific thing, but the first time I did it, I LOVED IT!! I don't even need the favor returned!! (although it's always appreciated, for sure!)

HPV Proven Major Cause of Throat Cancer

Wednesday, May 09, 2007

It's the leading cause of cervical cancer and is now believed to be the major cause of oropharyngeal (throat, tongue and tonsil) cancers.
The human papillomavirus (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,271092,00.html#) — more commonly known as HPV (javascript:siteSearch('HPV');) — causes more oropharyngeal cancers (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,271092,00.html#) than tobacco and alcohol use, according to researchers at Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center (javascript:siteSearch('Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center');).
"This is important because previously HPV was thought to be one of the risk factors for this type of cancer (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,271092,00.html#) along with tobacco and alcohol use, and now we know that it is the leading cause of this type of cancer," said Dr. Aimee Kreimer, a professor at the National Cancer Institute (javascript:siteSearch('National Cancer Institute');) and one of the study’s authors.

Oral HPV (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,271092,00.html#) is transmitted during oral sex and people with multiple oral sex partners are at the greatest risk for contracting the disease, said Kreimer.
Study participants who reported having more than six oral sex partners in their lifetime were 8.6 times more likely to develop the HPV-linked cancer, the study showed.

After studying 100 men and women newly diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer, researchers found people with prior evidence of oral HPV were 32 times more likely to get throat cancer than those who do not have HPV.
Smoking increases the risk of developing throat cancer three-fold and alcohol increases the risk by about 2 ˝-times.
HPV was present in the tumors of 72 percent of oropharyngeal cancer patients (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,271092,00.html#) enrolled in the study and is believed to cause about 60 percent of oropharyngeal cancers and about a third of all oral cavity and pharynx cancers in the United States.

Kreimer said alcohol and tobacco are still considered the leading causes of cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx.
The use of alcohol and tobacco combined with the presence of HPV did not appear to increase the risk of contracting oropharyngeal cancer, according to the study.
Oropharyngeal Cancer Rare
Oropharyngeal cancer is rare and currently affects about 11,000 people nationwide. Most people who get oral HPV will not develop the disease, Kreimer said.

Still, there is currently no test available to determine whether someone has oral HPV so regular dental visits are important in the prevention of throat and related cancers, said Kreimer.
"The dentist is the first line of defense against oral cancer," she said. "The use condoms or dental dams during oral sex are always a good idea because HPV isn't the only disease that can be transmitted through oral sex. There are other STD (javascript:siteSearch('STD');)s out there as well."
She said she and other researchers are currently studying oral HPV to better understand it.
"There's still so much we don't know about it," Kreimer said. "We're trying to characterize it and understand what it looks like and how it behaves in the oral region.

In addition to oral sex, oral HPV may also be transmitted mouth-to-mouth and can be transmitted by skin contact and in the mucus of the genital tract, and in saliva, urine, and semen, the study said.
Although the FDA (javascript:siteSearch('FDA');) has approved the vaccine Gardasil (javascript:siteSearch('Gardasil');) for the prevention of genital HPV infection in girls and young women, it has not been proven effective in the prevention of the oral infection, said Kreimer.
"The important thing is that we know what's causing (the cancer)," she said. "Now you can go on to learn how to screen for it and how to treat it."

Actually, I'd have to disagree. As amazing as Whitney's voice was before she got on the pipe, Mariah's always been able to do some incredibly difficult things with her voice purely from a vocalist's technical perspective, including sing in several octaves as well as a true falsetto which most female singers cannot do. On pure technical ability alone, I'd give the nod to Mariah. On sheer power and emotive ability, I'd give the nod to Whitney, however. Unfortunately, both of them squandered their talent on craptacular pop songs with the exception of a few real quality songs that got good exposure and now they're both about as irrelevant as it gets in the world of music.

I think Mariah has a 5 octave range if I'm not mistaken.

And I disagree Jag: I think Mariah has the better catalog of quality music out of the two. Her ballads are unbelievable man--and she's consistent. I mean, her last album alone churned out enough hits to tie her with the Beatles' record for most No. 1 hits in history.

The same can't be said for Whit-whit.

I really liked the old school R&B vibe she had on her first album. "Vision Of Love" is such an amazing song. But then she got on the new school tip and started churning out a ton of songs that all started to sound the same to me and sounded a hell of a lot like everything else on the radio. I know an artist has to evolve, but she went from doing something fairly unique at the time to just doing what everyone else was doing, IMHO.

Sex is a "black subject"--it's just as much of a part of our culture as anyone else's.

No one gives a dayum about Fred Douglas in the bedroom. J/K :p

EDIT: Oh, and my vote is for Mariah.

Talking about what "sperm" tastes like is just base dude.....I don't care what you say. That's pretty much where the conversation went. Just trying to bring us up outta that thing. Cool???

And Mariah is better......though both have crappy music these days.

Some films where the characters are all black have been socially accepted by everyone. Others are just the ones that have the lowest common demoniator of humor and are basically watched by some in the community, and that's it. Friday is one of the best films ever, regardless of your thoughts on it. It got critical acclaim, Ebert and Siskel gave it two thumbs way up when it was released. And the characters were likeable, even if Smokey was basically a weed head...Craig was a genuinely good guy.

When my wife and I watched Dreamgirls, we were stunned to watch Jennifer Hudson sing Beyonce's ass right into the ground...with authority! I enjoyed that film, btw, except for the part about halfway in where someone on the writing team discovered that they could have the characters SING dialogue to eachother and then decided to just have them do that for the rest of the damn movie. It quickly became irritating as hell.

Jag.......all of this music sounds the same today! No real instruments....no horns....no strings.........no drums........

Just a drum machine and computers...... that's why that Timbaland cat is so popular. He uses a casio to make songs. They don't want to pay artists to be artists. They want to make money fast! I remember when Stevie took 2 years to put out his next album. Now, cats put out new albums every 6 months.

You're preaching to the choir on this one, my friend. As a musician, I have little respect for the horrible stuff that is passed off as music and talent these days. That's why I have so little respect for Mariah anymore because, unlike most of these other hacks on the scene today, she actually has real, true ability and talent. And she's squandering it on the same exact "music" that everyone else is doing. Anyone with a sampler and some knowledge of how to construct loops can make a record, now. :down

*On this date in 1995, “Under One Roof” aired on CBS television.

As of 2006, it was the last prime time American TV drama that featured an “all black” cast. Under One Roof was a six episode midseason replacement series in spring of that year and CBS' answer for those who wanted a drama series featuring a predominantly African American group of actors.

It revolved around the upper middle class Langston family in Seattle, Washington, headed by patriarch Neb Langston (James Earl Jones), a widowed police sergeant who shares a home with his married son Ron (Joe Morton) and his family Maggie (Vanessa Bell Calloway), Charlotte (Essence Atkins) & Derrick (Ronald Joshua Scott), his daughter Ayesha (Monique Ridge) and foster son Marcus (Merlin Santana).

The last episode of Under One Roof aired on April 18, 1995.

I agree to some extent with what your saying. There are still some good musicians out there though. If they get exposer or air play is another matter. The music industry in the states isn't as open to diversity these days anymore. Look at the music charts its all the same type of stuff.

Orginality and talent counts for little anymore. What matters now is image and sex. Every female singer has to be smoking hot. Every band has to appeal to a demographic.

Waiting to Exhale and Soul Food.

See, I like movies like that. Films that showcase the good AND the bad in black culture. Some of the movies that focus on mere thuggery only marginalizes other people's views of us and adds to stereotypes.

That's why I believe TV shows like "The Cosby Show" and "Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air" were so monumental and revolutionary for their time. They lifted the profile of African Americans to where it was supposed to be.

Oh, and Soul Plane sucked for the most part. But it DID have it's moments...like when Monique stripped Morris Chestnut's character at the Metal Detector. LOL That **** was funny. :oldrazz:

Well, he's not my favorite, either, but he does have great ability at least from a technical perspective (being a musician and vocalist myself). He's got a pretty impressive range, really. Besides, Philip Bailey says Phil Collins has got a good voice and even recorded a song with him and let Collin's produce one of his albums, and Bailey's got more sway than you on this topic, so I am sorry.

Varient,

You mean, who's hot in terms of Hip Hop currently? Man, I couldn't even tell you what's really jood on Black Urban Radio right now. But if yer looking to get into New School Soul you could start with Musiq Soulchild's latest...and Robin Thicke.

Like Lenny Kravitz said, black folks invented rock, now they don't want to embrace it. My 16 year old cousin played electric guitar and sang a song yesterday for her sister's graduation, and some of them were like, "why is she singing white stuff?"

Though I guess if a white girl rapped for her sister's graduation, they'd say it was black stuff.

he's right.

it kinda bleeds into other cultures too. latino's who don't listen to rap or reggaeton get awkward looks, buit I guess those things are typically associated with the gangsta culture all young people embrace these days.

I love rolling down the windows in my car, turning the radio up high, and blasting music by Jet every once in a while. It gets a funny reaction out of nearby cars and pedestrians. It's even funnier when I'm singing along to "Cold Hard B*tch."

VH1 did something on him awhile ago. They said he had beef w/ Lenny Kravitz (sp?) and started talking smack like he was better.

LOL, I guess he was wrong cuz a few yrs later Lenny blow uptuated.

D'arby's a lot more versitale than Lenny, but he just happen to make the comments he did at a time when mainstream music liked their artists to be humble. 5 was Lenny's last good album.

Several. He's written, produced, and arranged all his material since he began his career. People wrote him off after "Introducing the Hardline. . ." because of comments he made that many in the mainstream public thought were too arrogant. Even with the critical success of his subsequent albums, he didn't get as much airplay anymore. To think, now we've got guys like Kanye West crossing the line between arrongance and just being a straight d***, but his career in the mainstream still thrives.

Makes sense, as I don't even remember them putting out a second project. Pharrell was the only one that folks wanted to see anyway.

Did you know Pharrell's been in the music business since like 1991? His very first gig was rapping on SWV's "Right Here/Human Nature" Remix (featuring Michael Jackson's vocals). He's the one rapping "S, Double-U-V, S-S Double-Double U to the V"....
