Wassup Hype Members! Welcome to the long-awaited SHH Delta Quadrant (also affectionately known as The Delta Quadrant)--a thread where peeps can discuss American Minority Culture. I'm yer host Lightning Strykez.

For me it was the Cosby Show. I remember my dad sitting me down and making me watch the episode where Theo wants to move out so when he comes home the family has turned the house into and apartment building. I remember Rudy being the landlord, Cliff was the handyman etc... My Dad used that as an illustration of why I should stay in school.

Dude, I  you for your passion on this subject. We've discussed this in the past...
And yeah, it's still taboo. It's interesting: My dad is German and my mom is Egyptian and black so I'm used to exposure to both sides of the equation (hell, our family reunions look like UN summits LOL). Yet, for all intents and purposes, I am considered black--the blonde hair and blue-eyed genes in my bloodline are totally ignored. So if I date a white girl (which I have done in the past) black women still accuse me of selling out. And I'm like..."but I'm half white goddamnit!"
They don't see my point though. All they see is neegra. :csad:

Oh man, thats ridiculous. I saw a clip before, it was only a bunch of actors, but I guess its a scenario that crops up every now and then in black culture, where this black guy was dating a white girl, and these black girls were just *****ing about them both behind his back. But he came back at them with the greatest retorts. Wish I could find that clip.

I grew up with my grandparents and they come from a different time and they consider it 'unnatural'. or 'they should stick to their own'. I find black guys attractive but i doubt they would even consider a skinny white girl like me. I think more understanding is needed especially where i come from. I live in surburbia and there isn't a black community unless i go into the city.

God, I loved the Cosby Show. It doesn't matter if it's those earlier episodes where Sondra was away at college (Sondra & Elvin are 2 forgotten gems on that show), or those latter episodes where Cousin Pam moved in and Bud was constantly trying to break Rudy up with her boyfriend (Rudy's boyfriend was a jerk, anyway). Bill Cosby created this great show about how, despite growing up dirt poor in the South, two black people came together to forge this incredible family, where their kids were going to Ivy League schools (granted, Sondra dropped out of Princeton to marry Elvin), and their children were growing up to become responsible adults (except for Denise). They were black, but it showed that your color doesn't dictate what direction your life will go.
Fresh Prince of Bel Air was a little less thought provoking, but hilarious nonetheless. The situations was the same, with Phil & Viv Banks growing up poor, and building their fortunes from the ground up. The difference, of course, is that the Banks kids were waayyy too "prep-school", and it took the wacky influence of Will to bring them all down to Earth, while also showing him that his life has a lot more potential than he thought.
Fresh Prince of Bel Air was funnier.
The Huxtable family was a lot easier for me to relate to.

Fresh Prince because it was just more funny to me.
On the interaccial thing..
It doesn't matter what race the person is to me. From what I know, some people don't date outside of their race to avoid problems (with both families)..or if a person likes only a certain race it may just be their personal preference, as Matt said.
I do understand what you're saying, kainedamo. Some people don't provide reasons as to why they wouldn't date outside of their own race, and still don't claim to be racist. If you can't give a reason it is definitly disrimination.
Lol, Lightning.. I hate when people do that. You're not selling out, even if you weren't half white. If you want to date a white girl you should be able to without others nagging you for it, this isn't the 1920s.

cosby show was not perfect... they dealt with racism .... divorce ... cliff and claire had arguments.. you gotta think about it the era's were different there was some stuff that weren't issues back then and some stuff that COULDNT be seen on tv.. especially sitcoms.. cosby show is by far the TRUE innovator and meas more to me... the GORDON GARTREL episode is classic... and i ALWAYS STOP AND WATCH .. everytime the MLK episode is on.... just hilarious and REAL... and the cosby show wasnt just a BLACK SHOW.. it had white folx, **** folx, asian folx... it ran the color gambit .... by far more meaningful in my life than any other show period.. BLACK WHITE COMEDY DRAMA.. whatever ... gotta be one of the best shows EVER

Showed the country that Black Americans HAD a homelife that didn't include most of the BAD stereotypes or the "Clown" quocient.(sp)
There was humor in both but there was an underlining seriousness and constant message from Cosby that was Missing from Fresh Prince.

Oh, and I'm voting for the Cosby Show. Don't get me wrong, Bel-Air is chockful of classics but to me Cosby Show showed a bit more realism. I thought the Huxtables were just as flawed as any other fictional TV family.
Although to this day I don't understand how Denise and Sondra were soooooo lightskinededededed compared to all their darker siblings and parents. Talk about miscasting. LOL :p

i still watch reruns of those every now and then

One thing I'd like to bring up is, has anyone else noticed that it is still looked down upon to date outside your race? Anytime the topic crops up, it seems to me that alot of people that claim they are not racist, say they would not date outside of their own race.
This always bothered me; people going bat-crap insane over a guy/girl dating out of their race. It's the person's choice, who the hello (minus the blankety blank O) gives a crap? It's not their business. Personally, in my past I've thoroughly been considered un-black so me finding other women from other races attractive was just another hilarious strike on my record :woot: . I am very attracted to east asian  , white (mainly polish, russian, german rowr  ) and latin women. That doesn't mean that I'll see a beautiful black woman and go "Zut alots! Get thee away! Get thee to a nunnery!" No, it's my choice and people shouldn't be getting bent out of shape about it. It's not like another extreme like I hate my race or something bizarre. :whatever:
In reality, what damage will it do? If the couple has kids that are accepted and loved by their parents and friends and family and santa clause, then what's the damage? I hardly see choosing a mate out of your own race as a betrayal. I would find "just settling with a person who happens to share your race" more of a betrayal; you're being true to yourself and you're comfortable enough with yourself not to say: "Oh man, I'd better not be attracted to so and so or I'll make people mad, I guess I'll settle with ___ I don't really love her, but hey at least she's *insert race here*
Well, those are my .08 cents and pocket lint. Good day to you all. I must swing away and fight clown related crime. :csad:

What's Wrong With Halle Berry?
She started believing her own hype, she's a damn good actress when she puts the effort in but after winning the oscar she started to coast and it all went downhill from there
Will the Oscar hurt or help Jennifer Hudson's Career?
Depends, some people win an oscar and view it as a credibility card they can flash whenever someone questions their abilities/judgement, which would ruin her career. On the other hand some people use it as a springboard and strive to achieve even more with each subsequent performance. Her next few films will show us which path she chose.
Why Aren't Top Black Actors Starring In Projects Together?
I've thought about this many times and I honestly don't have an answer. Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman starring opposite each other gives me goosebumps. It'd be like deniro/pacino in Heat. I'm honestly surprised that no-one has put those two together yet.
Is Hip Hop REALLY dead?
I don't know but if it is I could care less. Soul and motown will for me always be the pinnacle of black music. These days most hip hop and R&B acts have been pulled into the mainstream and blanded out into britney spearsesque crap.
What's up with Beyonce's album getting pulled--and is her ass overrated?
Her ass isn't overated, but the rest of her is. She's a good looking girl but she seems to have been held up as some kind of benchmark for beautiful black women. I always thought alicia keyes was way hotter and she can write songs without talking abouther ass every five seconds.
Can Whitney and Michael really make a comeback?
Whitney, maybe. She is still a great singer and her issues were largely drugs and alcohol based. Michael is sadly too far gone. He clearly has mental health problems, but then again so would you with that family. They've leached off of him for years. If he could have avoided the whole mesianic complex I think he would still be considered the greatest performer to ever take the stage, as it is he's become a laughing stock and that's nigh on impossible to come back from.
Is this country really ready for a Black or Female President?
I think america needs the most competant person for the job irrespective of colour etc. The problem is that any black candidate coming up through the ranks has so much weight of expectation on their shoulders that they will never be able to live up to their percieved role. Too much focus is put on simply getting a black candidate into office rather than getting the RIGHT black candidate into office. Whether it will ever happen though is another story. Too many crusty old white men with too much influence so far, but as american society becomes more integrated over time the playing field will level out and change will come.
Can we officially call Al Sharpton an Attention Whore?
To view the mans life as a whole he's done some astoundingly wonderful things, but of late that tag is becoming more and more justified. Anyone who's willing to cosy up to peta just to improve their profile needs their ****ing head read :whatever:

On the topic of Hip Hop and R&B,i'm glad Jay Z is back,it shows how poor Game and 50 were compared with a guy who not only is a poet but who also brings much more humour and less ego and violence to his records.
Also despite his legendary status i prefer Dre as a tack maker than MC and i miss Eminem's mix of crazy tracks and thoughtful cuts.
I listened to Robin Thickie and N-Eyo (sp)'s albums the other day and they both bored me to death,i'll take JT over them both any day of the week, not sure if he counts though,he kinda crosses genre's like MJ.
On the topic of rascism in movies,i remember Will Smith saying that in Hitch they had to cast at least an hispanic actress as they didn't want to do a black/White deal.....It'll be interesting to see how his next movie "Tonight he comes" is handled since he has an affair with Charlize Theron in it.

Is this country really ready for a Black or Female President?
Yes. A candidate for President should not have their skin color or sex even considered in the equation, but what they plan to do with the job and for the country. They should be treated no different than the wrinkly old white men who've got the job so far.
What's up with Halle?
IMO, nothing. She's still a wonderful actress, but in the past few years she's picking some pretty craptastic scripts. (Perfect Stranger, Gothika (a secret guilty pleasure of mine still), Catwoman, etc.). And let's face it pretty much the biggest African superheroine was in her grasp and she or perhaps the writer's (most likely this one, with her performance in second base as what's with the character.) got it all wrong. Could she come back from this? Yes. Some of her future projects sound like a possibly return to her old form. I only hope she comes back as the Halle of old.
Is Hip Hop/R&B music dead?
No, but in it's current state it should be. The stuff can be fun. (Beyonce and a few others), but most of it is out of line and just totally degrading. Rap music is a WHOLE other question. How we went from Rapper's Delight to songs about getting shot up and shooting others up and calling women *****es and hos every other sentence amazes me.
Cosby Show or Fresh Prince?
Fresh Prince, easily. I remember when I was younger and growing up. My family would get together to watch this every time it was on. Don't get me wrong the Cosby Show had it's moments, but the characters on Fresh Prince were people you could relate too more (even being white). Will, Carlton, and Phil, Hilary, and the whole Banks family were so well represented as just a family, with no focus on their skin what so ever that they felt like YOUR family away from your family. They weren't totally perfect (like the Huxtibles were) so they just felt more real.

I take it you never saw Glory then.
Is Hip Hop REALLY dead?
Once anything gets popular, it always dies. As of right now? No. The culture is in full swing. It's being co-opted by the media, and once you start seeing middle aged white guys trying to use the slang, it's over. It's getting there, but eventually, the Backlash will come.
Rap, on the other hand, is s**t right now. Either it's shallow and all about the mainstream, or it's preachy and boring when someone tries to do something with a message. Maybe someday, somebody will come along and change the game. Bring back some meaning, while not being depressing, and still produce something good to dance to. Until then, I'd rather listen to old school R&B, Blues, and rock music. But that's just me.

This is a hard one. The Cosby was a great example of black people in society and how the model black family should be but Fresh Prince was more of the show for me. Fresh Prince had great messages within its comic flavor like when Carlton and Will had a bet that Carlton could survive in the hood.

The Cosby show was too clean-cut, instead of focusing on how black families realy are, they opted to "sort out" blaxploitation by showing the world how they thought black families should be percieved....FP handled this very well i the sense that they were more real, identifiable and told it how it was. Don't get me wrong, the cosbys was a great show and did a lot to fend off negative perception of black people but....there was so mch more missing.

Quick google search
For most Oscar-winning actors, their night of glory is a complete blur. Not so for Denzel Washington (http://www.tvguide.com/redirect?type=movies&keyword=Denzel%20Washington), who picked up a gold statue in 1990 for his role as a runaway slave-turned-soldier in Glory (http://www.tvguide.com/redirect?MI=31938). "I just remember the look on my mother's face," recalls the 47-year-old, whose mom, Lynne Washington, was seated in the audience. "She couldn't believe it."

Wanda was on Living Color wasn't she? Or was that just Jamie Foxx's show? I just remember loving In Living Color. That was a great sketch comedy show.
Wanda brings back more memories for me I guess.

Y'know, even when I was too young to tell what gay was, I could tell they were pretending to be gay in that role. I miss in living color.

Martin had the best recurring characters of any show, though. Hustle Man, Bruh Man...from the fif' flo'. Bruh Man still cracks me up whenever he shows up and Martin just looks at his ass for a good beat.

Heh...you know what always cracked me up? The opening credits for Martin--the original opening credits I mean. That's when Shanaynay was doing this weird twisting movement/dance at a strange off-kilter angle. It was ***king hilarious to me.

"You know....jus' chillin'."I liked the one when kept having dreams about Pam, and Bruh Man was still at the corner making a sandwich, and told a story about a dream he had where he cried at the end...oh yeah...Bruh Man cried.
But also, nothing can beat Hustle Man's "Pick up the pieces!".

Though the Delta in the name would ring up memories of sorority/frat days, so it would still be black-centric.
Speaking of which, anybody in, or ever been in any frats or sororities? Yes, I mean Stomp the Yard type stuff. I was in for like a semester, but didn't stay. Most of the dudes in my family are Gammas though. Q-Dog for life...and they always step to Atomic Dog, the classic.

Agreed on all counts actually. I forgot about Voyager which I admit was tepid compared to DS9. I couldn't stand Janeway's nasal voice. And a Black Vulcan? Tuvok was  for me too.
One of the reasons I disliked DS9 though wasn't because of Avery Brooks--I was glad to see an African-American captain at the helm. The wormhole concept was boring to me....and Nana Visitor's ("Kira) flat, flabby ass in tight jumpsuits made me throw up a little in my mouth sometimes. :csad:

Now see:
I REALLY Enjoyed DS9,.. Because it showed "Federation Space" from the outside of StarFleet,.... Gave Some serious Backhistory as to a lot of "why's" in Star Trek,.... And Told GOOD social commentary that was lost since the original series,....
But that's just me.
In the same Breath,... I LOVED Voyager because you watch a "Picard" type science officer turned Captain,.. Morph into A "Kirk" by about Season 4,... You Have a Black Vulcan (They say there are no black vulcans,... but they were ALL over the place in The Wrath of Kann.) And they were doing pure EXPLORATION,...
I'm in the Minority though,... Probably because I don't mind strong women with soft gooey centers,... and Both The Captain and her Engineer were just what I prefer - Sumbody U can rely on to have your back and break it off at the base when you need them to.
I think the ONLY issue I have with Star Trek after the original series was the loss of Tech that the Original series came up with.
Heck,.. In Kirks time they had better Android Tech,.. Better Starship engine design,.. (Andromeda Galaxy in 300 years anyone?), And Sturdier equipment.
I cringed through the first three years of next Generation,.... Enjoyed all but the last two years of DS9,.. and Loved All of Voyager.
....................... I guess I'm a Black Trekkie.

And 70000 Light years BAMP??? Janeway was the Bomb! Picard would STILL be plodding along,... Sisko would've colonized a planet and sent Defiant on with a skeleton crew,.... Kirk would've been back in 47 minutes,...

Any Boondocks fans around here? I'm not a huge fan of the strip, but I freaking love the show. I know a lot of people want to call Aaron McGruder racist, but I think the show's just flat-out funny, smart and fresh.

I was hooked on the strip,... never watched the cartoon.
I wonder if I should buy the first season?:yay:

Martin had the best recurring characters of any show, though. Hustle Man, Bruh Man...from the fif' flo'. Bruh Man still cracks me up whenever he shows up and Martin just looks at his ass for a good beat.
".....Whassup, Bruh Man?"
"You know....jus' chillin'."
I think I'm late, but Shanaynay & other Martin characters all the way.
No,... You were not the only one,....
I enjoyed the series ,... was never bored by it because it's spin was unique.
And 70000 Light years BAMP??? Janeway was the Bomb! Picard would STILL be plodding along,... Sisko would've colonized a planet and sent Defiant on with a skeleton crew,.... Kirk would've been back in 47 minutes,...
Ok, cool. I love Star Trek, too, so I always enjoy talking about it.
I never really liked Voyager. It felt dull, and it was a sub-par series, writing and all. The only characters that I liked were The Doctor, Neelix, and Chakotay. Seven of Nine was great to look at, because Jeri Ryan is so beautiful. IMO, Janeway (not because she was a woman, but because of the show, itself) was not a good captain. Picard is my favorite, followed by Kirk and Sisco at a tie.

Yeah and I wish they'd do a second season. The santaclaus episode was my favorite.
"Yeah! I'm comin for dat azz Santa!" lol
Second season starts in June.
I just listened to the album again,i'd say 2 The Sky is better as the lyrics are just plain horrible in Lost Without U but i'd say the best songs on the album are Cocaine,Shooter and Lonely World.
I love Robin Thicke. The Evolution of Robin Thicke, IMO, is one of the better R&B albums in a LONG TIME. The man is one of the best right now. I really like JT, too.
I'll give you Lonely World, but I'm not a big fan of the other two. Mainly because words cannot express my disdain for Lil Wayne.
2 The Sky, Got 2 Be Down, Would That Make You Love Me, and Can U Believe are my highlights.
Yeah, those are my favorites as well, with I Need Love there, too.

What about the Emergency Medical Hologram? By far my favorite character on the show.
I thought it was rather clever having him act as the chief medical officer. It was just something about him that I didn't like. I don't know
Ratings are slipping.
Let's stick a size 4 girl into a size 2 outfit and see if ratings pick up. :o
Well it worked. I don't know what the ratings were like before her but I know it had to have made an improvement. I knew a lot cats that would watch voyager who had never seen any of the previous treks.
i thought Torres was sexy.
"come to bed baby, and wear the head..."
Hell yeah she was sexy.
That was an ingenious use of the holodeck concept. They should have used that same concept to introduce new or old characters to the show.
Indeed.

In order of Captains:
Kirk,
Janeway
Sisko
Picard
Because:
Kirk And Janeway didn't waste time.
Sisko made me like him because of the CRAP he went through:
Wife Killed by the Borg,
The GUY who was controlling the Borg who Killed his Wife being able to MAKE him take charge of a Space Station,
Being instantly raised to demi-God / Messiah position by an entire Planet of People,... And NOT using it to his advantage.
Forced to Make Do and play "instant" ambassador to whatever came out of the Wormhole.
Action-Guy Forced to be an Administrator.
Finally falling in love with sumbody I'da enjoyed then having to lock her up,..
Dealing with an off the drafting board overpowered ship DESIGNED to beat the Borg that they spent too much time keeping it in one piece.
The WormHole aliens and the FACT that His mom got Tweaked by one.
I got to respect sumbody who can continue to do his job under all that mess.
Picard?
Meh. I spent way too much time grinding my teeth at him taking 30 minutes to decide whether they should fight / run / or talk it out.
His crew didn't help.
The ships councelor?
The Boy wonder?
The "I escaped the Rape Gangs of my home planet to be a security chief."?
Meh,... And don't get me started on Jordi Laforge,.............

It could be that he was just a generally unlikable person. The EMH Doctor had a horrible bedside manner, and got along with few of his crewmates. He was intentionally written as an ass. But he wasn't an annoying piece of crap, like that b**** Pulaski.

I kinda wondered why Seven would take offense though,...

Why thank you.
I think the best way to enjoy Voyager is an episode a day,... It then ties together and you SEE the changes that hooked me.
DS9,... You need to Marathon because it has A LOT of continuity.
I'll give Next Gen it's Props,... It did Bring Back the Startrek Universe,.. But it's begining stories were retreads from the original series and at first the Primary command crew acted like the Trinity divided by two:
Kirk = Picard / Riker
Spock = Data / Troi
McCoy = Rapegang/Dancing Doctor N' Son.
(The last is a stretch but these too always showcased the "gut" reaction just like McCoy did on the Emotional side.)
After THREE seasons these guys Became their own characters and watchable by me.
DS9 for me were all Unique characters,... Voyager was a return to "where no man has gone before"

I don't remember that ep. I thought you were talking about the ep where he had a halodeck family and Torres changed it to where his kids hated him and his wife didn't listen to him. That episode was hilarious.

That episode:
In an Attempt to be more of a person, The Doctor Creates a fantasy life for himself.
He imagines he is a great artist and spends time Painting Nudes of Seven of Nine,
He Imagines that he is irrisistable to all the Voyager women and The Voyagers Guys all defer to him,
He imagines in times of emergency he swaps Job Sets to become the Emergency Command Hologram,... this last was priceless because it always came on in the vein of "This is a Job for SUPERMAN."
His Uniform shifts to red and he Stands straighter and looks more Bad-Azz as four black pips pop up one by one on his collar.
This last Fantasy also saves the ship from a set of Aliens who avoid Voyager only because they believe the Doctor is really a ECH.

Resistence is futile.....Damn. You know Star Trek was always meant to be just one big metaphor and now it just dawned on me just who the Borg represent. You, know those guys with the pale white skin who always go into neighborhoods that aren’t theirs and want to destroy other cultures and take their resources by assimilating them into their society that only has one goal: Take, take, take from anything and anyone and make it theirs.

"Tell of my legend!" ahem...anyways. In all seriousness, I just never really watched the show. I didn't dislike it, but all I've seen of it is a memory from like over a decade ago when they went back in time to the 20's/30's or something, then I changed the channel. Hmm
I'm looking for the name of this black comedian. He is featured in a DiGiorno Pizza comercial where he is wearing a superhero costume and ask why he "can't ride the motorcycle." I use to know his name, but I forgot and I need to know. Any ideas?
