I'd say they're both mediocre. They're isn't anything exceptional about them, and the quality of the work is about average. Not bad, not good either.

I am amused by the irony of someone coming in here with a statement like "There are a lot of bad tattoo's in here." and then proceeding to post shots of inkwork that are shining paragons of artistic mediocrity and banality. The Kool-Aid Man piece might be funny to some, but the actual artwork is base, unimaginative, and even subpar. If you are going to visit a place and insult people when you arrive, be certain that you cannot be insulted and criticized for the exact same reasons.

Funny. Except one thing... Who the F would forget Kool Aid? When I love the 2000's part 3 comes on every other hour, I think someone might mention Kool aid... kind of like pepsi clear. And why is the future Kool Aid-less? That is not a future i want a part of...
He should have got the rest:
Wouldn't it be nice
If i could touch your body
I know not every body
has got a body like me
- Fred Durst, Limp Bizkit circa 1997
It would wrap around a lot, but it would be worth it. [oh, and he would get Fred Durst instead of George Michael because obviously Fred ISN'T gay]

need i remind you, when he changed Limp Bizkits name to limpbizkit because crazy eyes left the band and then they covered that Who song for the awesome soundtrack to that frighteningly amazing movie gothika? Then they came out with that CD no one cared about? Need I?

So, let's recap. First you insinuate that a gay man couldn't POSSIBLY have tattoos of Kurt Cobain or Elvis on them. Now your reasoning is that a gay man couldn't POSSIBLY wear their hat backwards and that "nookie" is limited only to straight people. As for the bit of idiocy you spewed out in that last paragraph, what I got from that was that they covered a song by the Who and that you know far more about Limp Bizkit than I would ever, ever care to. You also found some sort of intrinsic value in the piece of cinematic trash that was "Gothika". Couple this in with your seeming reverence of Fred Durst and Limp Bizkit, I'd say banality is your forte. Now, because Fred seems drawn to other gay recording artists in his choice of cover material (George Michael for one, Pete Townsend for another...well, actually he's bi I believe but you get the point), and goes out of his way to make sure everyone KNOWS he's NOT gay....it's pretty easy to infer that he very possibly could be a raging closet case.

Yes, it's like a overactive biological need to protect my family. I wonder if my husband feels it too. I'm fully aware that I may need to step in at some point if it becomes physical, but I've watched her reduce 6'5" guys with attitude issues to babbling little ten year olds with just her words so it's usually not a problem. I'm protective of her, but it's really not me people should be afraid of. I might hurt them in a bad way physically but she'll crawl up between their ears and rearrange the furniture. Permanently.

So, I have a couple of friends with Maori tribesmen face tattoos (that they had done in New Zealand by a Maori shaman, I might add). Between that and the mohawks, the countless other tattoos they have including full sleeves and all the leather boots and harsh clothes (they're some of my punk-rock/artist friends in the Bay Area), they look pretty damn scary. But, they are some of the nicest, most down to earth people I have ever known. They will help old ladies across the street (for real), pick up stray animals and take them to the shelter, organize food drives and charity concerts and art auctions, and all types of other things most people don't do in life. They got the facial tattoos because there was something spiritual there for them that they simply couldn't turn away from. But they also view it as yet another opportunity for them to show people that people with tattoos and tons of piercings and crazy haircuts can be just as friendly and good-natured as anyone else. It's like a big giant mind-f**k for people who have preconceived notions about my friends based on how they look. They made the choice that was right for them about their ink, including having it on a place like their faces, and that's really the only one that matters. It certainly hasn't stopped them from doing what they want in life and, in fact, they've become more successful with their art and charity efforts because they are very recognizable and have a bit of a rock star kind of aura in part due to those facial tattoos.

If it's the right one for them, then that's what it is. Gotta be careful about how we mirror our own value sets onto other folks, I guess. For you or I, a face tattoo isn't something we'd ever dream of pursuing, but for some folks it's just a natural extension of who they are. To each their own, I guess. As long as the quality of the tattoo isn't half-assed and shoddy, then I don't pay it much mind other than to want to hear the story behind why they did it.

Not sure if you guys talked about this already, but it's sorta related to the extremes of tattoos...
THE SUNDAY HANGOVER
002
WARREN ELLIS
Can you imagine being stabbed in the eyeball forty times? For fun? No, no, even better – for Art. And, of course, for The Future.
An acquaintance of mine has recently gotten his eyeballs tattooed.
Now, actual ocular decoration isn’t new. Contact lenses count, of course, and in Holland they’ve been doing decorative eye implants for three or four years, surgically placing jewels in the conjunctiva. Intraocular implants have been around for donkey’s years, of course, but it was only in the new years of the 21st Century that some Dutch surgeon muttered around a lungful of Red Leb, “I have thought of a way to bring more bling to this cataract surgery gig.” See, this is what we have to look forward to in the 21C. In previous years, people with too much time to think didn’t usually have access to high-end surgical tools, and when they revealed what they wanted to use them for, they were usually sterilized and locked up in a basement. But it’s only this year that someone could say to themselves, “I’ve got no f**king space left on my body now that I’ve had that map of the Isle of Man inked on the inside of my foreskin – it’s time to investigate how to get my eyeballs tattooed.” And then get it done.
Now, apparently corneal tattooing has been around for ages, covering up scars and leucomas and other disgusting ****. But it took Shannon Larratt, of the indispensable ModBlog and the BME online community of body-modification fanciers, to ask the question – what about scleral tattooing? Well, a specialist told him that tattooing your eyeball is basically dangerous and stupid. Shannon, being Shannon, decided that this was Condition Win and set out along with two friends to get stabbed in the eyemeat.
One of said cronies, of course, was Pauly Unstoppable, the boy who looks like his head has been attacked by three drunken carpenters and has occasionally been called “the man with the biggest nostrils in the world.” The funny thing about Pauly Unstoppable is that his facial modifications make him look somehow sorrowful all the time. He maintains he’s a happy guy, but every photo you see of him just makes you want to pat him on the head. Or give him some money.
Anyway. As documented on ModBlog in this month of July 2007, Shannon, Pauly and fellow gambler Josh had the whites of their eyes tattooed. Now, they’re not after fine detail. They’re after a blanket of alien colour: they want to stain the entire white of the eye. Forty needle strikes into Pauly’s eyes. Literally, some bloke poking a bit of metal into some other bloke’s eyeball forty times. Ah, but this wasn’t enough for Josh and Shannon. Josh and Shannon had their eyeballs injected with ink mixed with antibiotics. There is, on ModBlog, an oddly disturbing photo of run-off ink flowing back out of the syringe puncture. A man’s eye oozing blue pus.
That’s right. Blue. The Fremen look, from DUNE. Which is, as the original specialist told them, much more easily and safely accomplished with a custom contact lens.
So, is this just a staggeringly retarded thing to do? Well... possibly. I think the spirit of the thing is absolutely correct. Why have a bicycle and only ever ride it on the pavement? The body-modification community is doing important work in pushing the envelope of the human body. We’re only ever going to be issued one each, so we may as well find out what it can do. (Personally, I just like finding out how much whisky and wakey-wakey-stuff it can hold, but I never claimed to be hardcore.) So, yes, we laugh at people with permanently blue eyeballs, and Stelarc with the ear on his arm and Orlan and her surgically-grafted bone horns. But the point of these procedures is entirely serious – without these ever so slightly mental stab-o-nauts hellbent on wrecking their bodies in artistic ways, we’ll never define the edges of how the body can be made to look and operate. Already, bodymod homebrewers have given themselves a sixth sense by implanting into their hands devices sensitive to magnetic fields – feeling when they walk past hidden security devices, sensing electric motors. The stuff of science fiction, really, and perfect, even necessary, for these science fiction years we now find ourselves living in.
So, this Sunday, lift your hair of the dog to the mad scientists of the human meat business. And then think about being struck in the eyeball with a needle forty times for the sake of The Future.

My "big sister" has "NICE GIRL" tattooed across her knuckles. Of all her tattoos and piercings, that's the only one I've ever heard her say she sometimes regrets because they are nearly impossible to cover up. And that's coming from a punk-rock artist type who doesn't work a normal job and doesn't give a damn about what society thinks of her or her appearance. She never thought she'd ever need to cover them when she had them done but, she found out she was wrong about that on a few different occasions.

We're enclosing all the images in comic panels. I don't exactly know how Coolaid (my artist) plans to do it, but that's why he's the artist, hah. It'll be cool. He'll do some fun stuff with it. Mostly I just sit there and let him poke me.
Also, the last big image will be the inside of my upper arm, and we're planning to do a face closeup- but do it in the classic comic 'dot' print style. (Instead of fluid color.) It'll take forever and a half, but it'll be sweet.

I think he's been tattooing since '93 if I remember correctly.
And aye, high neck tattoos take some dedication.

(Instead of fluid color.) It'll take forever and a half, but it'll be sweet.
ha ha so many jokes....:D

Still working on the exact design, but the main parts of it will be a lotus, cherry blossoms, and water. Basically, it'll be Japanese style and about different aspects of life.
I actually get pretty sweet deals on mine too, but with Christmas and everything, I've had to put it off longer than I'd have liked. Hopefully it'll get started next month. I might get something small on my wrist to tide me over, though.

Yep. Everything I've got aside from my very first two small tattoos is done by one guy. I plan to continue to go to him because I trust him, we get along, he does great work and does it for crazy cheap for me. But I send a lot of business his way and I help him out in any other way I can- I'm helping him with remodeling his shop currently.
My entire left arm is being done in his new ink that he developed. I don't know much about it other than he innovated it.

Draw4u, really awesome stuff. I was actually planning on doing tattoos as well, but it looking like it won't happen. I went in for the interview with a full portfolio, and everything went great. The problem is that I'm a full time student, and I wouldn't have enough time to spend in a shop.
But the guy who ran the place said that if school doesn't work out, I can hopefully go back to his shop and apprentice. So in the meantime, I'm looking to submit some stuff to Pulse Flash to make a few bucks.

We are planning background. It looks kinda patchwork right now (I'll take a full arm pic later today when I feel like it.) We're enclosing the individual images in comic panels, and in between doing pieces of random comic images (like random pages laid out under the panels.) The last major image on the inside of my upper arm is several smaller face images, but he's going to do the shading/color in the old fashioned dot print style- the way comics used to be printed. It'll take forever to do as a tattoo, but should look pretty sweet when its finished.

Sorry, but it all looks like a thousand other tribal tattoos that I have seen. Add in that using one of those designs increases the chances that there will be someone else with the exact same design running around and it's not even an original design with significant meaning for anyone who would put it on themselves besides the person who drew it, and it undermines the individuality and originality that most people with ink pride themselves on.
Understand, I'm not knocking his designs. He does well enough for the art genre he's playing in. It's just an idea that sort of goes against everything I think of as an underpinning of tattooing: creativity, individuality, originality, special significance of the artwork to the person bearing it. None of those things are there for someone just randomly having something from that site inked on them. For the record, I feel the same way about most tattoo flash, not just your friend's site.

Woman With Tattoo From Homemade Gun Got Sick
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Some women in Springfield are regretting their decision last week to get a tattoo from a door-to-door tattoo salesman. At least one person had to be hospitalized and the others face serious health risks.
Friday night, a man knocked on doors holding a tattoo gun and offering his services. Tamra Eason described the tool as homemade, but still agreed to pay for a tattoo. So did two other women in her apartment complex.
"It was wrapped with black tape, had a pin underneath it, had fishing wire going through it, you could tell it was a homemade gun," Eason said.
The next day, Linda Falls passed out and had to be hospitalized.
"I passed out in the store and they said I should have it checked out," Falls said.
All the women have an infection in the tattoo area and have been told to get tested for HIV and hepatitis.
The health department said it's always worth the extra money to get a tattoo from a licensed professional with the right equipment and sterilization procedures.
"Getting a tattoo is like a wound. There's a risk of disease that may be long term or life threatening. It's a serious decision," said Jaci McReynalds, with the Greene County Health Department.
It is illegal in Missouri to give a tattoo without a license, so if several people file complaints with the state, the county prosecutor will pursue the case.
"Beware of deals in parachutes, brain surgery and tattoos," said Miller Cotton, a tattoo parlor owner.
"We just wanted tattoos, and now we're paying for it," Eason said.

But for those who don't have an idea of what they want they can visit that site thats all I m saying. there s not one reason to wear tattoo. Maybe for you tattoo as to mean something but to me it doesn't have to. For some to be tattooed it s nothings more than like to wear jewelery. In the ancient world some people just tattooed them self as a leisure noting more.
And honestly I m tired about people thinking they are deep because their tattoo mean something..Like the typical bulls***: ''oh well my girl friends mean so much to me I put here on my arm.. bla!bla! bla! :whatever:

I always knew where I wanted my first tattoo before I ever got it.
When my nephew died, it broke my heart. I can honestly say I am not the same person I was before that. He and I were only a year and a half apart and he was the first friend I ever had. (my sisters are 20+ yrs older than me)
After he died, there was a Survivors of Suicide Memorial Walk event held by the AFSP nearby. Our whole family went, and if you knew my family at all, you haven't been able to get 5 of us in a room together in years. We adopted the team name Life is BEAUtiful for our group and got shirts made up. This was one of the few times I actually felt the familial love, even though it was a truly saddening time.

Actually, you're wrong. Tattooing originated as a rite of passage. They were done to represent significant moments in a person's life like a boy becoming a man. They were not done for "leisure."
Generally speaking people do get tattoos because they mean something. Tribal is the biggest exception. Even women who get the typical butterflies and roses get them become they represent freedom and beauty or because they're feminine. Hardly anyone gets something just because it looks good, and those who do are like 5x more likely to regret it later on because tastes change (my artist's words, not mine.) But yeah, get whatever the hell you want, but be sure its something you actually want to have permanently etched into your skin.
Though, how embarassing would it be to see someone who had your same tattoo? That would totally suck and is the main reason I don't get flash. Well that and because its usually terrible.

Errr....most tribal cultures attached SIGNIFICANT meaning to the art of tattooing. It wasn't just "something to do". It was often done to prove their virility, manhood, ability in battle, as a way to achieve true beauty, to ward off evil spirits, to show devotion to the deities they worshipped and many other very significant reasons. The instances of ancient cultures engaging in tattooing just for the hell of it are absolutely in the minority. While I have just the two medium sized pieces on my back in my ink collection, I have many, many friends who are absolutely immersed in the tattoo culture from many different walks of life and different backgrounds. Not one of them has any ink on them that does not have significant meaning to them. None of it is random or something they did just for the hell of it. I very rarely meet people who will get a tattoo just for the hell of it. If that's what you're all about with your ink as a form of self-expression, then more power to you and I support that wholly because tattoos and other body modifications only really matter to the people that get them and for whatever reasons they choose for that.
And I stand by my original comments about your friend's site and artwork: well done but very generic. Sorry that seems to have offended you.
And honestly I m tired about people thinking they are deep because their tattoo mean something..Like the typical bulls***: ''oh well my girl friends mean so much to me I put here on my arm.. bla!bla! bla! :whatever:
People aren't deep because their tattoo has some meaning to them. People have depth because they put time, thought and effort into things in their lives and because they pull from the life experiences on which they've had time to reflect and grow from. Their tattoos have depth because the people that got them ALREADY had depth in the first place. Scorning people for having depth? Wow.
I always knew where I wanted my first tattoo before I ever got it.

I got my nephews name, Beau, tattooed on the inside of my wrist in my own handwriting. It's small enough to cover with a watch or bracelet if need be, and its somewhere I can see. Whenever I need a reality check, i can look at it, remember how precious and beautiful life really is and to be greatful and thankful for what I have.

Some of my tattoos have no meaning at all- at least none deeper than 'I like pirates yay!' But none of them are flash. Even when I'm going for something simply fun that I like the look of, its designed custom by me/for me. They become meaningful simply because they're permanent and they're on me. I'd imagine even a person picking flash off a wall attaches meaning to it, even if it's just "this is my tattoo and it's cool looking." If there were no meaning at all for a person, they wouldn't get a tattoo in the first place. "Meaning" isn't always a heart touching story like CC's.
I'd like to think that flash will fade out, but I guess there will always be people without originality. A lot of shops nowadays don't even stock flash anymore, and some shops will do nothing but flash. The flash-only shops tend to only be a half step up from a guy in a van, in my experience.
It pretty much comes down to- quality shops with quality artists frown on flash and prefer to do custom work from a customer's idea. Its a much more fulfilling experience to work with the artist to have the perfect design made for you, and always, always, always ends up in a better tattoo.

It makes it sound as if you are trying to pass yourself off as a tattoo artist. It also shows you have a lot of disdain for people who do get tattoos. Any tattoo artist worth their salt loves the challenge of helping people bring their ideas to life and even helping them realize that they can make their tattoo so much more than they had originally thought. They will also view people who are somewhat vague in what they want conceptually as an opportunity to give that person ideas and help make it something they really want to have done. Every tattoo artist I have ever known has also had a lot of interest in the vast majority of the ink they sling for people rather than regarding it as boring or lame. They also tend to know the history of tattoo as well. If you're going to play in the tattoo business, at least learn the history and, a bit of advice if I may, stop viewing people and the ink they want as basically a nuisance.
I'd venture a guess the number of people who "just want ink but don't know what to get" is very, very small, by the way. Sounds like a highly niche little business to me.
Edit: I'd also add that many, many, many people get tattooing done as a form of catharsis and closure for very significant events in their lives, some tragic, some not. In those instances, the tattoo artist is very much playing the part of healer and counselor. I don't think most seasoned tattoo artists overlook this aspect of what they do or take it lightly.

Truth. Though I'd add "Any good tattoo artist" as a clause. I have met quite a few tattooists who have the attitude that most tattoo customers are stupid, inexperienced and don't know what's good for them. They become the artists who mostly attract customers who don't know what they want/don't know how to find a good tattoo artist. When a customer comes to the shop saying 'I don't know what I want,' a high quality tattooist will sit down with them and say 'what do you like? Where do you want it? Let's create something for you.' A mid or low quality artist will point at the flash wall and say 'that's what we have.'
Artists tend to attract a customer base more or less looking for the quality tattoo that they do. IE, a really good artist will tend to mostly get people coming to him/her that are looking for high quality, unique and awesome tattoos. A lower quality artist will attract fad customers who don't care what's on their body as long as they can say they have a tattoo and it costs under $x.

In my experience, most of the low end artists don't last long in the business because they can't compete, even with the rock bottom prices, against more talented artists. There are a ton of tattoo shops out there these days as it has become more pervasive in our culture, and there are a lot of really talented folks working in the industry. It's really attracted people who are truly artists first (hell, my ink guy has a Bachelor of Fine Arts, his emphasis being drawing and painting) who happen to view tattooing as another medium to work on. The number of fad customers who just want any ink at all for super cheap just isn't enough to sustain the crap artists in a market with so many ink slingers in it.

Big Dogz Ink is still in business. :csad: When they flounder and fail, maybe I'll believe you.
I think the amount of tattooists with degrees/years of formal art and formal tattooing education is increasing steadily. Its becoming a more valid/lucrative art medium and with that will come more professionals to the industry.

Right, that's kind of what I was trying to say about every tattoo has some sort of meaning. For example, my mom wanted a tattoo but my dad was a controlling dick and actually forbid her to do it. So, in her first show of real independence she went and got a rose. It's just flash and a simple red rose, but it has meaning to her.
