Short story long
In 2005, long time ago...Wachmen movie was supposed
to be made by Paul Greengrass. It was a sure thing, site was up,
preproduction on the way, actors almost cast, release date "2006".
Me, going nuts like a squirrel on amphetamines...
What to do, what to do...yeah! make a fan made teaser trailer...
3 different programs and a 3 days later it was done but W. movie was dead, canceled, put on a shelf before they shoot a single frame of it...we all know the story.
...and until few hours ago I thought that my fan teaser was lost, deleted in one of many hard drives that I broke or broke them selfs in a past 2,3 years.
But no!!!
In a folder named something like "123qwe" there was a folder and in that folder another folder...until "old stuff" folder and in it...

ok im probably gonna get chewed out for asking but...what is watchmen about?

You haven't read it yet?!?!?!?!:wow: I'm 110% serious when I say go out and buy a copy NOW!

Anywho, here's the basic outline of the story.

Watchmen is set in 1985, in an alternative history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternate_history_%28fiction%29) United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) where costumed adventurers are real and the country is edging closer to a nuclear war (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_warfare) with the Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union) (the Doomsday Clock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_Clock) is at five minutes to midnight). It tells the story of a group of past and present superheroes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superhero) and the events surrounding the mysterious murder of one of their own. Watchmen depicts superheroes as real people who must confront ethical and personal issues, who struggle with neuroses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurosis) and failings, and who - with one notable exception - lack anything recognizable as super powers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_comic_book_superpowers). Watchmen's deconstruction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superhero#Deconstruction) of the conventional superhero archetype, combined with its innovative adaptation of cinematic techniques (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinematic_techniques) and heavy use of symbolism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbolism), multi-layered dialogue, and metafiction (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metafiction), has influenced both comics and film.

Something I found out about the Doomsday Clock... in Watchmen, which is supposedly a more dangerous, tense alternate reality, it's set at five minutes to midnight, yes? In real-life 1985 it was actually at three minutes to midnight.

I don't know what "a more dangerous, tense reality means."

The Cold War didn't hinge in quite the same way on "mutually assured destruction" in the Watchmen's world compared to the real world. This is due to the presence of Dr. Manhattan. For me, I got the sense, as expressed by the Comedian, that the maybugs were, indeed, going to fly (or however he says it) -- but that it would probably happen sooner if Doc Osterman weren't around. The Watchmen's Cold War was sort of different, simply for the fact the Osterman could prevent the U.S. from being utterly annihilated. In this sense, it's a less "dangerous" arrangement (if the Russians attacked, they would be fawked in the most serious way), but also a bit more "tense" in the sense that Nixon and his administration we able to be more assertive/bullish/douchebaggish.

So, for me, it kinda makes sense the the Watchmen's "doomsday clock" would be a couple of minutes behind the real world's.

I respectfully disagree (but perhaps not in a particularly well-thought-out manner--just saying what I feel). Look at Killing Joke's summary: "the country is edging closer to a nuclear war (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_warfare) with the Soviet Union (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union) (the Doomsday Clock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_Clock) is at five minutes to midnight)". People wouldn't emphasize that, I think, unless it was meant to imply that the threat of nuclear war loomed even more ominously over the world than it did in real life. That's the impression I always got, in any case: that the world of Watchmen was dangerously close to the tipping point, that the US and USSR were even more paranoid and arms-race-happy, etc. It's true that Doc was a powerful deterrent, but the very day after he went to Mars, Russia invaded Afghanistan. I'd call that a more "dangerous" world, although you may not.

Summaries of alternate reality stories don't usually begin with "In a world even safer than our own...", y'knowhatimean? :yay:

Hey guys, I have a request to ask of one of you fellow manipers. As you have seen recently, the new Watchmen pics have arrived and are truely amazing. However, there's one thing that's bothering me; it's not a big difference but I'd like to see it done. Can someone add the extra cloth/leather/rubber back piece on the back of his ears, just like it is in the comics.:yay:

Eh, I think it's pretty clear that his suit will be black. Especially since we saw the designs on the wall behind Snyder and it was black.

We've seen two images of Ozymandias. One is color saturated to the point of nearly being a black and white photo, and the other is a tiny out of focuse picture on the wall behind Snyder. That's not a whole lot to go off of.

Also take into account that when Snyder himself was asked about costumes, he commented that the characters he changed the most were Nite Owl and Silk Spectre. I'd say if Ozy's costume really looked like that picture makes it seem, then it'd be the biggest change of them all.

This is how Ozy should look. I think that, in terms of shape and design, what they did with Ozy's costume was perfect, and works better than the costume from the comics would. I still take issue with it being black, because it's not consistent with his character. The above picture is just about perfect, I think.

Yes, I know... but for the other characters as well... I hate all "promotional" art, regardless of the production in question. For example, I imagine that The Dark Knight will far surpass Nolan's first Batman pic and am really looking forward to seeing it. However, I don't have any desire to see a picture of Christian Bale suited up and pumping his fist in the air for a photo that is destined to adorn a Slurpee cup. Sure, that's the guy who's playing Batman all gussied-up in his Batman suit, but it gives me no insight into the film at all.
And the same goes for these Watchmen photos. If I were to make a guess about the direction of Snyder's production based on those photos alone, I wouldn't be too interested.

FatalEnergy
03-29-2008, 11:04 PM

Round goggles, judging by the manips, would have been nice. I can't think of why they wouldn't keep them, unless perhaps the square ones give Patrick Wilson a better field of vision. I think lujho's manip is perfect. The round goggles plus smaller ears look great.

Y'know, all these Silver Surfer-based manips are starting to sell me on the idea of a metallic-looking Doc Manhattan. Maybe even a surface that shifts between metallic, translucent, glowing, etc., hinting at the sheer energy contained within his body. It would be one way of getting at the otherworldliness that doesn't quite come across in Gibbons' art, but was described by Hollis Mason.

Heh.

All I said was it looked kinda cool and that it might fit the character. Didn't say I wanted to see it, per se. (And nobody better bring up the "Watchmen isn't supposed to look cool" argument) Truth be told though, I'm almost certain that the film team will do something interesting and out-there with the look of Manhattan's skin. Probably not metallic, probably something pretty subtle, but he's not just going to be a smurf-man. Hollis Mason's description of him as something your brain refuses to believe exists may have been more psychological than visual, but I'd like to see that aspect of him (which, in my opinion, Gibbons' art doesn't try very hard to do) made apparent in the film.

As a side note, I think it would be hard to argue that Moore and Gibbons weren't inspired at least a little bit by SS when they designed Doc Manhattan. Bald monochrome naked man in outer space with god-like powers, detached from interpersonal connections after a life-changing transformation, fatalistic and unemotional? Go figure. It's the psychological depth of his character that makes him unique and not a "Silver Surfer knockoff", but the look and the powers are nothing particularly groundbreaking. For that reason, the Silver Surfer is a pretty reasonable place to start when trying to figure out how a cinematic Manhattan might look, I think.

It doesn't matter, Dr. Manhattan is clearly not. You get the reference without the metallic skin which looks terrible and screams cheap ass CGI. It will be unreal enough if they can make his skin glow blue light convincingly. Case in point:

Me as Rorschach for Halloween. The mask is stretched across my face and has only thick felt marker on it. When it is stretched tight, I could see just fine.

did the marker rub off on your face after a while?
looks really cool. did you walk around all night saying "Herm"?

No problem. I can see how it could be mistaken for being real, it's a great manip.

Since we're all outta movie manips for the time being and are instead choosing our own WATCHMEN inspired art, these two are my faves outside of Gibbons's own handiwork, courtesy of the maestros that are -

Mike Mayhew (LOOK! No purple pantaloons!):
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c377/CB15/MayhewSchach2.jpg

...and, of course, Alex Ross with his tribute to all things Alan Moore:
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c377/CB15/MooreRoss.jpg
as impressive as Ross's work is I think Mike Mayhew's looks better when you put the two together.

Hey, I got a question- is there a website, or an image hosting site, archive or Yahoo group just for Manips where people can post them, and they're catalogued? And if not, would anyone support and/or frequent it if I made one?

Here's one of Crudup as the Doc...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v398/Stigart/cruduphattan.jpg

... but since he's gonna be CGI, I guess he's gonna be more... well... Silver Surfer-like looking with smooth skin and no human anomalies. Hopefully he'll still resemble Crudup.
In retrospect this actually ended up being really accurate

Basically it means porn must be made now. Rule 34 of the internet states: if you can think of it, there is porn of it. If there isn't, it must be made, no exceptions.

very nice  hot stuff.

why does that have pain on his mask?
i dont know about watchmen.
it's not paint. his mask is made of a material that changes its pattern according to heat (i believe it was heat). so it changes with his emotions.

Naw, the marker was fine. It smelled pretty intense for a bit, but that went away soon enough. It worked pretty well. I was braking little fingers all the night long.

You know, I always thought it was weird that people always made "Peppermint Patty is gay" jokes. Maybe her sidekick Marcie was, but Peppermint Patty was always hitting on Charlie Brown.
