Cherepanov broke scoring records at every level
John McGourty | NHL.com Staff Writer
One of the biggest problems for a hockey player growing up and playing in Siberia is that you don't get a lot of international attention. Compare two of the leading prospects for the 2007 NHL Entry Draft in Columbus, Ohio, on June 22-23:
London Knights right winger Patrick Kane is ranked No. 2 among North American skaters. Alexei Cherepanov, the Siberian, is ranked No. 1 among European skaters.
NHL Central Scouting Bureau's Al Jensen wasn't scouting a tournament in St. Catherine's, Ontario, nine years ago. He was there with his son, but he'll never forget what he saw, on what was for him a day off.
"Some 8-year-old kid named Patrick Kane scored five goals in a game there," Jensen recalled. "He's been ahead of the pack all along and people have been aware of him for a long time."
Cherepanov was born in a small town near a big city you've never heard of, Barnaul (pop. 750,000), in Siberia.
"I was born in the small Siberian village of Ozerk, which is near Bernaul, where we moved a few years later," Cherepanov said through an interpreter at the NHL Draft Combine. "We moved to Omsk when I was 12, after my parents, Alexei and Rita, made a decision that would help me develop as a hockey player. We had long winters in Siberia. My dad took me skating when I was 3-years-old and it seems like I have never left my skates. I love to skate and play hockey.
"Our decision to move was keyed by a recommendation from the Omsk coaches who saw me in Bernaul when I was scoring a lot of goals and playing well. So, we moved there and I became part of the Omsk development program. When I was 15, I was Russia's leading scorer among players my age. I was impressive at a regional tournament and got invited to play for Omsk. My 21 goals and 38 points broke Sergei Samsonov's record."
Although Cherepanov was a young hockey phenom, his notoriety was restricted to local legend. He wasn't picked for any Russian national teams in international championships until last winter when he was the top forward at the World Junior Championship. Rumor has it that Cherepanov wasn't in the top two dozen Russian players before the tournament and rocketed to No. 1 with his performance.
Cherepanov was fifth-leading scorer with five goals and three assists in six games, but it was his propensity for big goals that caught the scouts' eyes, including a critical go-head goal against the United States that led to their 6-5 victory. Cherepanov's credits the win to the team finding its chemistry in mid-tourney.
"It was very different in the preliminaries. We were forced to overtime by the Swiss while the U.S. and Canada were easily beating their opponents," Cherepanov said. "When the important games emerged, we played much better. In the tougher games, our team came together and played much better. I scored the winning goal in the last second against the Swedes."
American right winger James vanRiemsdyk competed against Cherepanov in that game and came away with a strong positive impression.
"Cherepanov had one strong, dominant shift and that's when he scored on a great shot," he said. "You know, great players find a way to get it done. I give him a lot of credit."
"When I beat the American goalie, Josh Unice, to make it 5-4 before we won 6-5, his defensemen were in front of him, blocking the goalie's view. I saw that and tried to put it over his shoulder and under the crossbar. There wasn't a lot of room. It was a small opening and a very tough angle, but I got the shot I wanted and it was perfectly placed so it was tough for the goalie."
Cherepanov's 18 goals in the Russian Super League this past season surpassed the performances of every great Russian player you've heard of. No surprise they gave him uniform No. 17, immortalized in Russia by the great Valeri Kharlamov.
"I broke records held by players like Pavel Bure, Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin which was a great honor for me," Cherepanov said. "It's a very pleasant moment when someone congratulates me for those accomplishments. But I tell everyone that I'm very grateful for the help I got from my Omsk linemates, Anton Kuryanov and Alexander Popov. We had nothing but pure success and they helped me get exposure."
Cherepanov is a left-hand shot but Omsk used him mostly on the right wing, his off-wing, like his hero, Bure. He likes the off-wing, but has no preference.
"I can play both wings and I'm equally comfortable," Cherepanov said. "I played right wing for Omsk and left wing on the national team. Thinking about future considerations, I think the extra diversification will help me be more useful to any team that I play for."
Cherepanov has a nicely balanced body and moves gracefully but there is still a lot of boy about him, as to be expected of anyone just turned 18. He was asked if he's ready for the rugged style of the NHL.
"I like physical play. I'm not afraid of it. But I might not be mature enough physically right now to play in the NHL," he said. "I'm getting more power from working out. I don't know. I might be ready for the NHL now but I know there are more things to work on if I want to be a master of the game. I know that if I work hard and I can make my strength equal to my skills that I can be the full package. I think that if I play one more year in the Russian Super League I will be ready the next year for the NHL."

The uniform below is what they have been wearing since moving to the Fleetcenter, I admit it's not a drastic change, but its definately a change. Fonts, Logo, Secondary Logo, Striping and so on. Every team in the league is getting new uniforms because they are now being done by Reebok and are called "Edge" uniforms I believe. They are going to be cut different and what not, this doesn't mean the teams are getting new color schemes and logos but changes nonetheless.

We just signed Briere!
I think the 8 years is just too much. Having his buddy Biron apparently helped but what are the odds Biron will be there in 8 years? Philly is a graveyard for goalies. Hextall put a curse on that position when he left. Joe Thornton just signed a 3 year extension and he's a year younger than Briere. He's not going to win in Philly, the small speedy Frenchmen showed his true colors: greed.

Oilers sign Vanek to offer, Sabres match
The Edmonton Oilers made a huge splash in the restricted free agent pool, and the Buffalo Sabres were quick to calm the waters.
The Oilers signed forward Thomas Vanek to a seven-year, $50 million offer sheet, a signing that carried a price tag of four first round picks. Sabres general manager Darcy Regier called a media conference on Friday afternoon to announce that the team would match the offer.
The deal will pay Vanek $5 million in the first two seasons, and $6.4 million in each of the following five seasons. The contract will also pay him a $5 million and $3 million signing bonus in the first two years.
Vanek, drafted fifth overall by Buffalo in 2003, made $942,000 US last season. The native of Austria finished fifth in the league in goals with 43 and 19th in points with 84 in only his second NHL campaign. In two seasons with the Sabres, Vanek has registered 68 goals and 64 assists in 163 career games.
He has also accumulated eight goals and four assists in 26 career playoff games.
The Vanek signing marks the second time in as many years that a team has tried to land another club's restricted free agent. Last year, the Philadelphia Flyers offered Ryan Kesler a $1.9 million US deal that was easily matched by the Vancouver Canucks.
It has been a tough off-season for the Sabres, who have already lost forwards Chris Drury, Daniel Briere and Dainus Zubrus, all of whom were unrestricted free agents. Drury signed a $35.25-million, five-year deal with the New York Rangers, Briere signed a $52-million, eight-year contract with Philadelphia while the New Jersey Devils signed Zubrus to a $20.4-million, six-year deal.
This would've been the move to make if Drury or Briere had signed but with both of them gone I didn't see Buffalo parting ways and accepting four first rounders. Still Vanek could end up a bust. Oilers are trying.
Senators also announced John Paddock as their head coach. No surprise. Now we need to trade Gerber, sign Emery.
Wings sign Dallas Drake

I personally think Lowe is a ****ing genious for that move. He's just showing that there are other options besides spending ridiculous amounts of money on certain free agents. I mean, Oilers got totally screwed in the free agent frenzy (that Michael Nylander thing just makes me sick) and this whole thing just brings up a whole new bag for the NHL....

Yes I had him on my fantasy hockey team and I've seen plenty of guys have a great season, sign a new contract and never reach the points total or potential they previously had. Vanek doesn't have to play great hockey for the next six years until his contract is up. So its a bit of a risk on Buffalo to invest seven years, the pressure will be on him to produce after losing their co-captains.
Former Conn Smythe winner Brad Richards goes from scoring 91 points, signs a 5 year extension then puts out 70 points last season. He had the 2nd highest salary but was tied for 40th for most points.

4 years is much, much older? Vanek will be good but enough to justify the seven year
Well I've won three fantasy hockey leagues in the past two seasons.
In a radio interview in Buffalo, the Austrian-born Vanek was excited to remain in Buffalo and eager to play up to the expectations that come with his new contract.
"I left Austria when I was 14 years old, and my dream wasn't to sign a $50 million contract," Vanek said. "My dream was to play in the NHL and be one of the best players and win a Stanley Cup and that's still the main goal. Money's not going to buy you a Stanley Cup ... I'm ready to prove myself even more than I did last year."
The Oilers move was not unprecedented, but still considered a bold one in how much the team was willing to spend knowing the Sabres had the right to match.
The Sabres retained Vanek's rights by issuing him a qualifying offer last month, but the player -- as a Group 2 free agent -- was open to negotiating other deals. Had the Sabres not matched Edmonton's offer, the Oilers would have had to give up four first-round draft picks to Buffalo as compensation.
Draft pick compensation is based on the offer's average annual salary. Four first-round picks is the maximum compensation, required for any team that makes an offer of more than $5 million a year.
Vanek, who made $942,400 last season in the final year of his rookie contract, will make $10 million next season, including a $5 million signing bonus. He'll make $8 million in 2008-09, including a $3 million bonus, and then $6.4 million in each of the final five years of the deal.
The Sabres had every intention of retaining Vanek, particularly when they were still stinging after losing both co-captains on Sunday, when Briere signed with Philadelphia and Drury with the New York Rangers.
Learning of the Oilers' interest in Vanek on Thursday, the Sabres went as far as to warn Lowe that any offer he made would be matched.
"I suppose you have to assume they thought we were bluffing," Regier said. "What this amounted to was an exercise in futility."
Warnings aside, Lowe was confident the Oilers had a good chance to land Vanek.
"This wasn't a publicity stunt by any stretch," Lowe said. "We had our reasons internally that we thought it might work."
Sabres should've signed this guy on July 2nd, and now they're paying for it. Vanek says he wants to win a Stanley Cup but he still signed the contract to play in Edmonton for 7 years... I'm just saying these long term contracts are going to bite a few teams in the ass. Vanek has one great year and suddenly he's guaranteed to justify the huge contract?

NHL Sources: Game At The Ralph?
Nick Mendola - Tuesday, July 10, 2007 - 5:55 AM
(WGR 550) - Multiple NHL sources have told WGR that the Sabres are in line for a potential New Year's Day game at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
Another source, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the Penguins have agreed to be the visiting team for such a contest, with Buffalo and Detroit as possible homes. It's also reporting that NBC is tentatively calling the event, "The Ice Bowl."
Sounds great. Mario and the Penguins from the 90s vs. La-La-La-La-La Fontaine and the Sabres from the 80s/90s in a Mega Stars game before the actual one. If Messier was allowed to play in the Mega Stars game while he was a current NHL player then current ex-Sabres and ex-Penguins could also suit up for the short alumni game.
Then onto the actual game with the two high scoring teams. It would be a great boost to the NHL in America and would be cool if The Ice Bowl became an annual event in the NHL calendar. About 18 teams could host it (unless Winnipeg comes back to the league.
I went to the Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Staduim, this is an event that every hockey fan should expierence.

The NHL is opening its 90th season in the birthplace of the Stanley Cup.
The Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings will become the first teams in league history to play regular-season games in Europe when they meet Sept. 29 and 30 in London. It was in England's capital 115 years ago that the championship trophy was purchased at the Regent Street shop of silversmith G. R. Collis and Co.
The Ottawa Senators and the Toronto Maple Leafs open with a midweek home-and-home set at Air Canada Centre on Oct. 3 and at Scotiabank Place on Oct. 4.
The Montreal Canadiens play their first game Oct. 3 at Carolina and are in Toronto on Oct. 6 and Pittsburgh on Oct. 10 before playing their home opener Oct. 13 against the Hurricanes.
Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver each play their first two games at home. The Oilers face San Jose on Oct. 4 and Philadelphia on Oct. 6; the Flames meet Philadelphia on Oct. 4 and Vancouver on Oct. 6; and the Canucks take on San Jose on Oct. 5 and Philadelphia on Oct. 10.
Teams in the Northwest Division don't play teams in the Northeast Division at all next season, meaning the Leafs, Habs and Sens won't be appearing in Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver, and vice versa.
League MVP Sidney Crosby and his Penguins play their first game in Canada next season in Toronto in a Hockey Night In Canada show Oct. 13. They play in Ottawa on Nov. 22 and at Toronto again on Dec. 1. They swing through Western Canada for games at Edmonton on Dec. 5, Calgary on Dec. 6 and Vancouver on Dec. 8. Their remaining games in Canada are Jan. 19 and Feb. 21 at Montreal and March 1 at Ottawa.
The Ducks fly home to play three more road games _ at Detroit, Columbus and Pittsburgh _ before hoisting their championship banner in their home opener against Boston on Oct. 10.
The New Jersey Devils play nine games on the road before their first in their new 17,625-seat arena in Newark, N.J. The Senators will supply the opposition.
The annual Hall of Fame Game is Nov. 10 in Toronto between the Leafs and the New York Rangers. Ron Francis, Al MacInnis, Mark Messier and Scott Stevens will be inducted two nights later.
The all-star game is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 27, in Atlanta.
Hockey Day In Canada on Feb. 9 will include four games involving the six Canadian-based clubs. Detroit will be in Toronto for an afternoon game, Montreal is at Ottawa and Calgary is home to Edmonton. Colorado is at Vancouver in the late game.
The only rematch between the Stanley Cup finalists will take place March 3 when Ottawa is at Anaheim, the scene of the Sens' Game 5 championship series demise.
The 2008 playoffs will begin April 9 and will end no later than June 9, the league announced.

Atlanta should go, they are closer.
But yes it must suck, they've been the best team (in the regular season) for the past 15 years.
A team in Winnipeg and Kansas City would push Detroit or Columbus to the East. Another Eastern team has to relocate to the West I think for Detroit to finally play in the right conference since Columbus is farther east.
I want the Wings in the East. They deserve it.

Fought hard? Fans stayed away. The building never sold out until the threat of the team moving was real. This is after having Crosby. After Malkin.
As for the notable dates, its a Canadian Press article, most of the Canadian media has had a hard on for Sid since he was 14.
Well after the lockout and then having national games downgraded to Versus, I'm sure there are many former hockey fans who would tune to see players they watched in the 80s/90s in an alumni game outside and then seeing an outdoor game and this Crosby kid. Also the Heritage Classic wasn't shown in America until a week after it happened, on ESPN. Yeah people in Florida won't tune in but people in traditional hockey markets might tune in. If they gain 10,000 fans American fans, that's a boost.
The trouble is most of the teams are in the eastern or central time zones. Maybe dividing conferences as north and south instead, so that all teams have a more equitable travel schedule is a better solution.
Bettman shot that down because the networks that still carry hockey would lose viewers if people in the east didn't stay up to watch and people in the west wouldn't be home in time to see half the game.
The Honda Center wasn't even full at the start of games in the Finals due to the early starting time and traffic. I can't remember the last time an arena wasn't full to start a game in the Finals.
The US Government could just change Detroit and Columbus to the central time zone.
OR move Atlanta, Florida and Washington to western North American cities.

watch the alumni game? you are psycho... those football games are all day, not just prime time, all day. and did you happen to research that little deal? theres backhanded dealings in congress and once that ass clown in philly gave the deal (gambling deal) to someone who would pay for the arena in installments over years, instead of now like two other suitors were promising, people started to see they had to do something. and it just so happened we went on that 16 game scoring streak, so it worked out well for all.

How long did he try to get an arena deal done? 7 years?
Psycho?
The alumni game will be 40-50 minutes with dragged out intros. So the American sports fan suddenly has no interest in their former favourite players?
So there is no former hockey fan or the millions of casual sports fans who don't watch the Bowl Games, who cheered on the Penguins in the 90s who wouldn't have the slightest interest in seeing Mario again? Or perhaps curious to see an outdoor game in the middle of winter infront of 75,000 diehard hockey fans? Man what the **** happened to hockey in America? The original outdoor game was the most watched regular season hockey game in Canada. Like I said if the NHL can win 10,000 American fans back or increase interest in the northern markets than its a boost.

What they really need to do is get rid of about 6 or 8 teams. The talent pool isn't deep enough to field 30 teams anyway. Never mind that Bettman wants to expand to 32 teams (why wouldn't he - the expansion fees are not considered revenue, so they don't have to be shared with the players in terms of increased cap room).
So, maybe we should be saying goodbye to the teams in hockey hotbeds like Phoenix, Florida (both teams), Raleigh and Atlanta, as well as the teams that can't draw flies - like St. Louis, Nashville and Pittsburgh. Of course, that would cost money, and you can Bettman and his friends wouldn't even consider it.

They're probably good candidates for relocation - but where would Bettman want to put them? Probably in markets that are equally as good for hockey, like KC, Vegas, or Portland. Now, if the league was interested, they'd move the teams north of the border, where there would be fan support - Winnipeg, Hamilton (where that Blackberry guy wants to move the Predators). Hell, even up in the Yukon they could probably draw more fans than in Nashville.

1/3 of the NHL's revenues come from the 6 Canadian teams. The Canadian dollar is at .95 US cents right now, that helps a lot. If Bush has done one thing right, its make the Canadian NHL markets stronger. Bettman said if a team were to expand or relocate to Canada he would like it to go to Winnipeg. A new building in Hamilton would be great too but that won't be happening anytime soon.

New Look Of Sharks Territory Coming July 24
July 10, 2007
When the Sharks take the ice for the 2007-08 campaign, they will be doing so with a different look, and not just with regards to the players. There are few details publicly available, but the one certainty is the Sharks logo will have a more updated feel this fall. There will also be new secondary marks introduced.
“I think people are going to like it,” said defenseman Kyle McLaren, one of several Sharks who had input on the updated design. “I think they’ll embrace the change. It goes with the new NHL.”
The Sharks did not take altering their brand lightly, as the main logo has been one of the most popular in professional sports since the club’s inception in 1991.
“We put a lot of research into this and feel the fans will thoroughly appreciate the updated logo and new marks,” said Sharks President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Jamison. “The players were heavily involved in the process and they were extremely happy with the outcome.”
Fans will have their first opportunity to view the new look and secondary marks on July 24 at 10 a.m. PST on sjsharks.com and merchandise with the updated logo and new marks at the Sharks Store will be available starting on that date as well.
While the logo will be released this month, the new-look jerseys will not be previewed until closer to training camp. All NHL jerseys will be altered to some degree this year as Reebok introduces new fabrics to help enhance player skills.
The Sharks primary mark has not changed throughout the Sharks 16-year history, but the jersey has been altered on several occasions. San Jose ’s original jersey was introduced in 1991 and the most recent incarnation was put in place in 1998, although it served as an alternate jersey the prior campaign. The alternate black jersey debuted in 2001.

I think I have a pretty good idea, there is the internet and the Canadian sports media. The US is always talked about up here on a weekly basis during the season. I don't believe I ever said hockey was the most watched sport in America, if you went back in the fantasy hockey thread or the last few NHL threads I've always commented on the NHL ratings in America.
How they try to bring in fans on NBC so they put the Senators/Penguins game on in the afternoon even though it would do much better in the evening on CBC. Just after CBC signed a long term contract that will never happen in the US. The CBC had lower ratings for the afternoon game then their usual primetime Saturday games, while NBC's was down. The NHL does care about ratings, its the American networks and public that don't care about the NHL. They have to have an embarassing deal with NBC where after NBC's costs are covered the NHL can keep any profits. They have to pay NBC to air their games. Versus gives the game the respect and coverage it deserves but its not available in most homes. Not signing with ESPN was a mistake and it should've cost Bettman his job.
I've been on Sabres message boards and they seem to think its a great idea and will do something to earn some attention from casual or former hockey fans in traditional markets. But there is no annoucement, we'll see what happens if it is ever announced.

Hockey club championships in the works
Canadian Press
7/13/2007 11:15:41 AM
ZURICH, Switzerland (CP) - The IIHF intends to proceed with a proposed new European hockey league after receiving a positive feasibility study.
The plan was originally floated in April and IIHF president Rene Fasel announced during the World Hockey Championships in Moscow a month later that an agency had been hired to conduct a feasibility study.
The agency, Ovation AG, submitted a report to the IIHF and the top European leagues on Thursday.
''The study was completed in June and it came to a very positive conclusion that there is a substantial potential for top-class European club hockey competition and that there is interest from fans, sponsors as well as from broadcasters,'' Fasel said. ''The vision we presented in April is now a concrete goal for the 2008-2009 season.
''The next major step is to sign a three-year contract with the top European national federations and their leagues, which we plan to do this November. We need this time to put together the contract.''
A five-stage, 60-game format for the Champions Hockey League has been presented to representatives of the governing hockey bodies from the Russia, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Slovakia and Switzerland.
Total CHL prize money will be 16.9 million Swiss francs (nearly C$15 million). The first CHL final will be played in two games, home and away, in January 2009. The winner is to get an additional C$873,000, and the right to play an NHL club for the Victoria Cup.
The first Victoria Cup game or series of games is being proposed for September 2008 with Europe represented by a team or teams from the existing European Champions Cup competition, which will be staged in St. Petersburg, Russia, Jan. 10-13 next year. The Victoria Cup would also carry ''a substantial financial reward.''
As of 2009, the European team or teams for the Victoria Cup will be taken from the new CHL.
The first Victoria Cup event will coincide with the IIHF's centennial anniversary.
The trophy at stake will be named after the Victoria skating rink in Montreal, which the IIHF recognizes as the birthplace of hockey because of an indoor game played there in 1875.
''The Victoria Cup will be a joint venture between the IIHF and the NHL and will be the first annual world club competition for a trophy endorsed by both the IIHF and the NHL,'' said Fasel.

Devils name Sutter head coach
Canadian Press
7/13/2007 1:50:20 PM
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Brent Sutter was hired as the coach of the New Jersey Devils on Friday, taking over one of the NHL's least secure jobs.
The 45-year-old Sutter will be the Devils' 14th coach in 26 seasons in New Jersey, and he will try next season to become the first to finish a season since Pat Burns in 2003-04. Days after the season ended, cancer forced Burns to step down.
After the 2004-05 lockout season, Larry Robinson lasted half a season before resigning and being replaced by Devils president and general manager Lou Lamoriello.
Claude Julien got the job last summer and had the Devils in first place with three games left in the regular season when Lamoriello fired him because he didn't like the way the team was playing.
A two-time Stanley Cup winner with the New York Islanders in the 1980s and one of six brothers to play in the NHL, Sutter has never coached an NHL team. A strong disciplinarian, he has had success behind the bench.
"We are fortunate to have someone with Brent Sutter's character, knowledge, energy, enthusiasm and experience join our organization," Lamoriello said Friday. "He has been successful at every level and we look forward to him continuing that success in the National Hockey League."
Sutter coached the Red Deer Rebels - a team he owns - to the Memorial Cup in 2001. His stature as a top NHL coaching prospect was significantly enhanced when he guided Canada to world junior gold in 2005 and 2006.
Sutter resigned as coach and general manager of the Rebels on Thursday, but he retained ownership of the team he bought in 1999.
Lamoriello wooed Sutter after the 2005-06 season, but he opted to remain in Alberta.
The Devils won the Atlantic Division title this past season and were eliminated in the second round of the playoffs by the eventual Eastern Conference champion Ottawa Senators.
Sutter will take over a club that lost two of its top players to free agency in recent weeks. Centre Scott Gomez signed with the rival New York Rangers and three-time all-star defenceman Brian Rafalski signed with Detroit. Both players were members of the Devils' Stanley Cup championship teams in 2000 and 2003. New Jersey won its first Cup in 1995.
Sutter will also face the prospect of coaching his first nine games on the road next season. The Devils are moving into the new Prudential Center in the state's largest city after playing at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J., for the past 25 years.
The new building is in its final stages of construction and the Devils scheduled a long road trip to open the season to avoid a possible problem.
Should've taken the Flames job last summer. His son Brandon was selected by Carolina in this year's draft.

PREDS STAYING IN MUSIC CITY, SOLD TO LOCALS
Associated Press
8/1/2007 7:13:36 PM
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Nashville Predators owner Craig Leipold thinks he's finally sold his NHL franchise, this time to a group of local businessmen and one California venture capitalist that wants to keep the team in Music City.
Leipold announced Wednesday he has signed a letter of intent to sell his team to the group. Eight partners put down $10 million as a deposit towards the purchase price of $193 million.
"I'm thrilled to death the team is staying here," Leipold said.
The only partner from outside the Nashville area is William (Boots) Del Biaggio III, who will have to sell his minority share in the San Jose Sharks as this deal closes. Leipold said he is excited to pass ownership to a group he knows is committed to Nashville.
"We've certainly, as they say, put our money where our mouth is today," said David Freeman, one of the partners and chief executive officer of 36 Venture Capital LLC.
The bid was less than the $220 million offered by Canadian billionaire Jim Balsillie when Leipold announced May 24 he had signed a letter of intent to sell his team, but Leipold said Balsillie ruined that deal by indicating he might move the Predators to Canada before money changed hands.
Balsillie renewed an arena lease and took season ticket deposits in Hamilton using the Predators' logo and applied to the NHL to relocate before applying for ownership.
"Jim Balsillie went his own direction with a rogue lawyer who had no intention of honouring the process of being an NHL owner," Leipold said. "Obviously, we didn't go forward, so we began the process to find a new owner."
The Predators told the NHL during the league's draft in late June not to consider Balsillie's offer.
Leipold had been meeting with Freeman since the first letter of intent was signed. Talks picked up after Leipold backed away from Balsillie.
Del Biaggio previously offered $190 million for the team, and has an agreement with the Sprint Center in Kansas City to own any NHL team relocating there. He will be a minority owner in this deal, and Freeman said there are no circumstances where Del Biaggio could become majority owner.
This deal will end Del Biaggio's deal with AEG to bring a team to Kansas City, but he said in a conference call that he will push the NHL to consider putting a team there in the future.
"I'm committed to Nashville," Del Biaggio said.
Leipold helped bring Del Biaggio into the local group, and Del Biaggio said he committed a week ago. He wouldn't comment on how much bigger his share will be than with the Sharks, but said he will have more say on business and hockey operations.
"I've been lucky enough to be in the NHL for a long time now so I understand it," he said. "I'll be able to help the group as they will be able to help me with the local Nashville people."
His involvement helps reduce the amount of debt the group will have. Leipold said the debt would be among the lowest in the NHL.
When asked if Del Biaggio's involvement meant the team's future in Nashville remained in doubt, Freeman said there was no assurance if hockey does not succeed in Tennessee.
"Our belief, as kind of the local group, is that given a second chance Nashville will support this team and that there will be a tremendous overall show of support," Freeman said. "We have obviously agreed to write Craig some pretty large cheques to back up that belief."
The biggest challenge in keeping the team in Nashville?
"Simply buy tickets and show up at games," Freeman said. "That's really it."
They hope to finalize their application later this month and anticipate a closing date no later than Sept. 30. That would allow the new owners to take over before the season opener Oct. 4.
"Anything can happen, but having said that, clearly we've gone through the most difficult part of the process right now," Leipold said of completing this sale.
Leipold has been trying to sell his franchise because he said he has lost $70 million since being awarded the team in June 1997. He said he never thought about trying to retain a minority ownership share.
He says this group and its local ties to businesses will help the Predators succeed in boosting corporate support from 35 per cent. That is nearly half what other NHL teams enjoy.
The group also includes Herb Fritch, CEO of HealthSpring Inc. Freeman said the names of the other five Nashvillians will be revealed in two weeks.
The team must average 14,000 in paid attendance this season to keep the arena lease in effect after the upcoming season. Freeman said they have no intention of breaking the lease but emphasized the Predators must average enough in ticket sales to collect under the NHL's revenue-sharing plan.
A 15-hour rally July 19 helped sell 726 season tickets, which Leipold called the biggest sales day in the franchise's short history.
Del Biaggio said there is no owner in the NHL who can survive losing up to $15 million a year as Leipold has done recently.
"Success to us will mean not just being able to survive financially, but we want the club to win," Freeman said.
Jim Balsillie may be a billionaire, but even I'm smart enough to not blow my load and announce in a newspaper I'm taking season ticket deposits and not consult the seller and NHL. Doesn't help Winnipeg that much, keeps the price of teams down.

The Anaheim Ducks have declined to match the Edmonton Oilers' five-year, $21.25 million offer sheet for winger Dustin Penner.
As a result, Penner becomes property of the Oilers while the Ducks receive the Oilers' first, second and third round picks as compensation.
"I have not (called him) and I don't plan on it," Lowe said on a conference call. "I have one responsibility and one responsibility only - and that's to the Edmonton Oilers fans and the Edmonton Oilers ownership.
"I'm not in the business of trying to make friends. Never have, never will be."
In a poll on TSN.ca, 82% of users felt the Ducks should not match the offer and let Penner go to the Oilers.
Last season, Penner scored 29 goals and added 16 assists for 45 points in 82 games. In the Ducks run to the Stanley Cup, he scored three goals and added five assists for eight points in 21 playoff games.
When the offer sheet was tendered last Thursday, Burke lashed out at Lowe.
"I have no problem with offer sheets, they are part of the CBA," Burke said on a conference call. "I think it's a tool certainly a team is entitled to use. My issue here is this is the second time this year in my opinion Edmonton have offered a grossly inflated salary for a player, and it impacts on all 30 teams and I think it's an act of desperation by a general manager who is fighting to keep his job."
Last month, the Oilers made a seven-year, $50 million offer for Buffalo Sabres restricted free agent Thomas Vanek. The Sabres matched the offer and then showed their displeasure with Lowe, saying it was an exercise in futility.
Lowe didn't feel the need to make any apologies.
"There's almost some insinuation from managers that because we're friends we shouldn't be doing this to one another," he said. "I think our responsibility is not to one another, but is to our fan base and our ownership."
Said Burke: "It's not a priority for me to mend this fence."
Anaheim had a week to match the offer and waited right until the deadline had passed before announcing it was letting the 24-year-old leave.
Burke says he was presented with trade offers that would have allowed him to shed salary and fit Penner under his cap, but couldn't justify any of the moves.
Penner was anxious in the last 24 hours before learning his fate. Heading to a new city with a handsome new contract, he isn't concerned about the extra expectations that are sure to follow.
"The pressure that I receive from the media and fans won't be near the pressure of what I put on myself," said Penner. "I know myself I didn't peak this last year as a player in Anaheim.
"I don't know what my potential is, but I think in the next five years I'll find out."
The native of Winkler, Man., was an undrafted U.S. college player who signed with Anaheim as a free agent in 2004.
Some mixed emotions came with leaving the organization.
"You definitely grow attached to the team that first gives you an opportunity to get into the league," said Penner. "And Anaheim did that. . . .
"I'm grateful for the opportunity they gave me."
He'll face a different sort of challenge now. After making it to the Stanley Cup in 2006, the Oilers finished 12th in the Western Conference last season.
Lowe didn't want to see that happen again and set out to be aggressive this summer. After he was unable to make a trade at the NHL draft or sign a big-name forward through unrestricted free agency, he looked towards the crop of restricted free agents.
"Restricted free agent offers were another part of our planning process all along," said Lowe. "Based on the reaction of some of the managers and some of the people in hockey, (it was) a very unpopular route.
"From our perspective, it was a very necessary one to improve our hockey club."
Burke took issue with the money Lowe offered to both Vanek and Penner and claimed that other general managers felt the same way.
Lowe earlier said that he had received calls from GMs who supported his actions.
"I find that incredibly difficult to believe," said Burke. "I'd like him to identify the GMs who said this made sense because the sentiment I've received has been 180 degrees diametrically opposite.
"I find that hard to accept."
It doesn't matter now. Penner is a member of the Oilers and he's looking forward to joining the team.
"I'm excited to be in a position where I become accountable to be a go-to guy," he said. "Hopefully I can do that. I'm excited at the challenge."
Penner was at a Winnipeg car dealership signing autographs at a already scheduled event and when the news broke the Oiler fans headed down to meet the latest Oiler.

He's the Trojan Horse. Remember Nashville still has to reach a 14,000 paid average. Their season ticket drive is just over 8,000 and roughly the same pace as previous years. If the team fails in Music City then he can move the team to Kansas. Rumours are he put in $40 million, the most of anyone and isn't a minor investor.
Yes he's given up on getting a team to KC but he's working on Plan B right now it seems. Still its beyond me why the NHL would want to keep a team that has lost $70 million since they arrived, is a niche sport in the state, has no local corporate support and needed $14 million in revenue sharing last year. Southern Ontario, Winnipeg (which has quietly and respectfully talked with the NHL and has the Asper Family committed to bringing a team) or even Kansas City would be better options than keeping a team in Nashville.

They've wanted to sell for awhile (just like the Ducks) and seemed like they had given up. Funny how some teams make it so public while others don't announce it until just before the BOGs have to approve it.
Less than two months before the season starts in London, England. I know it's been mentioned before, but the sudden announcement of it so close to the start of the season was definitely a surprise.
I'm just happy they're keeping the team in Tampa Bay.

Daryl Katz's third attempt to buy the Edmonton Oilers has been rejected.
The Edmonton Investors Group (EIG), headed up by chairman Cal Nichols, held a news conference Tuesday afternoon to announce Katz' latest offer had been turned down. Nichols also announced that the group has voted to take the 'For Sale' sign off the franchise.
Katz, who owns the Rexall Pharmacy chain, made a $170 million offer last month that included more than an investment in the hockey club.
''I am also prepared to make a significant additional investment of time and money towards the development of a new downtown arena facility for the team and the city if that's what the people of Edmonton want,'' Katz said.
The Oilers are currently owned by 34 investors who bought the NHL team in 1998.
Katz is listed by Forbes magazine as the 486th richest man on the planet. Last year, his net worth totalled $1.6 billion.
WTF
He wants to build a new downtown arena, wants the team to have a max cap like the big market teams (so they don't have to lose the face of the franchise every 5 years and attract free agents) and is a local billionaire. They piss this guy off three times. Good luck Oiler fans.

The thing about it is that at least the Investor's group is primarily concerned with keeping the team in Edmonton, no matter what. Who knows what Katz may do if the team starts losing money, he could end up moving the team to the US. A lot of people here think it's better to have a committee as owners rather than a single person....
And believe it or not, many people in Edmonton are actually resistant to building a new arena....

I love the Bruins. They've been my team for years. But I'm not crazy about the new logo. But if they can get into the playoffs, they can play naked for all I care...I miss the days when the B's were good.
Ahh, the days. I hope I get to see this again this year. :)

Oh yeah, that's right, Bill Davidson sold them didn't he? Yep, sold the team to a group of investors headed by former Panther's coach and Blue Jacket's coach/GM, Doug McLean, Florida real estate developer, Jeff Sherrin, and movie producer, Oren Koules.
They said the team is staying in Tampa Bay, and all three plan to move to the Tampa Bay area.
Nothing against Davidson, as he was a good owner, but these guys seem to actually care about hockey. It's refreshing to know that the owner will actually be in house and not hundreds of miles away in Auburn Hills watching the Pistons.
There's a local pastor here named Bill Davidson, lol.
Same guy. Mr. Davidson sold the Bolts so that he could persue his career as a holy man. Like that Eddie Murphy/Jeff Goldblum movie with the same name.
But Davidson got them a Cup. In the same year as the Pistons and Shock did.

Don't get me wrong, I liked Mr. Davidson and Palace Sports. They helped turn one of the worst franchises in sports into a Cup contender. But he never had the passion for hockey and the Bolts as he did for the Pistons and the NBA. He never came to a game, save the Stanley Cup Finals. He was always in Auburn Hills watching the Pistons and such.
The new owners seem to be much more passionate about the sport of hockey than Davidson ever was. And that's a big plus.
Touche. I can somewhat agree with that mindset.

We're going to be having a busy week then with banquets and other functions, and I doubt I'd make it home by then. If it could get pushed back to like 2 or 3 PM EST I could do it.

Sometime in July. The Wild have Backstrom and Harding, two younger and better goalies. The rumour was that Boston was going to offer restricted free agent Ray Emery a contract that Ottawa wouldn't match, but they would have to give up 4 1st round draft picks most likely. Then the trade happened.

Pre-rank your players.
There are 10 teams. 6 will make the playoffs. So you have better odds of making the playoffs but there will be more players available so it should make it very competitive if people update their rosters each week and have players dressed.

? Where is that rule? Is that in fantasy football? Just every team gets two bye weeks if there isn't an even number.
it was up in the league notes. :whatever:
We've got a full slate of teams today... :word:
I can't make the draft tomorrow on account I'm driving 100 miles and back to bring TSoB to his mother's, so unless you change it to later in the evening (anytime between 7:30 & 9:30 YOUR time in Manitoba), I can't be there.
:csad:
I guess i'll stick around.

The Blackhawks were 7-1 in preseason last year. Bochenski looked to have a year that would rival Crosby's two years ago so just wait to see how they are in the regular season.

Being an odd number never came up in previous years. Good to know.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will start the regular season without one of their key forwards, as centre Kyle Wellwood had additional surgery on a sports hernia on Saturday. The team received word early Friday evening that he had an issue in the same abdominal area that was surgically repaired last season. "We found out late last night that he was going to require a revision - a surgical procedure on his previous sports hernia," GM John Ferguson said Saturday.
Any predictions on which teams will make the playoffs?
Its going to be another tight year.

Yeah some team better have some goalie injuries (like Atlanta did 2 years ago, what a mess) so Gerber's value goes up and teams would be willing to trade for him.

yup, trade for a defender. last season the defence was ok but could have been better.

When you start a league you can go up by twos but 12 has been the standard. We were stuck at 11, 1 backed out because they couldn't commit a whole season and so it was dropped down to 10.

I have an A-lister with Broduer, so I wouldn't exactly be hurting. And Huet is a capable goalie in his own right. I'll probably end up keeping Giggy, but if the right offer comes around I'll pull the trigger.
I'm definitely not going to trade him for a chump.
