View Full Version : Phantasm: Would it work?

After watching Mask of the Phantasm again, I'm convinced that adapting the character to live action would work. It'd be cool if Phantasm turned up in a Nolan movie. Elements of the storyline (the flashbacks to when Bruce was just starting out) were used in Batman Begins. They could easily alter some things to make it fit with Nolan's series.

The only problem I could see is the Phantasm hasn't really been incorporated into the comics, as much as other TAS characters have, like Harley Quinn or Renee Montoya, so I don't know if they'd go with a character who hasn't been established in depth in the Bat mythos. I think that the character and the story are strong enough though to work.

Thoughts?

I don't think it would be done. I'd rather just keep Phantasm in the great cartoon film.

You mean like Rachel Dawes?

I think Andrea's character can work, but only for a reboot of the franchise. Because of the origin elements, I think she works best as it was written in MOTP. Heck, with a few rewrites to make it bigger in scope, the entire film can be redone in live-action and be a great success.

If they could make it work, it'd definitely be interested. And thanks for reminding me of that movie! *Tabs to Amazon*

they could have the Rachel Dawes character become the phantasm..and use a similar story line to it...just..instead of "Andrea Beaumont" use "Rachel Dawes".

slight retcon, but it wouldnt be too bad. acceptable, and make the Rachel Dawes character, i dunno, useful?

Yeah, that's the obvious choice but wouldn't get a bit too eye-rollingly cliche to constantly have Batman's allies secretly become villains? Ducard/Ra's Al Ghul was a nice, unexpected twist, Harvey Dent/Two-Face is pretty essential, but Rachel Dawes/Phantasm is kind of overdoing it.

It's not more cliche than andrea herself.

who was written in for that exact reason.

I think taking the basic character and placing them in could be done. I.e. have someone that the joker or any large batman villain affected as a low life mobster when they were young and have them go on a killing spree when they are older.

heck, they can even make the character masculine and have him be another vigilante form that uses drastic measures to then question the way batman goes about his crime fighting and why he never simply kills the villains etc...

it would make an interesting twist on how batman would now have to defend a given villain although now new evidence emerges about this past crime so they inevitably go down for it, along with some kinda gotham based crooked official etc...

No Phantasm please.

It would only work if you did a straight adaptation of the animated film. What would be the point of that?

that's bull, the phantasm is a simple revenge character that uses extreme measures.

this type of character was effectively selina kyle in batman returns and has shown up in other guises, perhaps even tim drake as the red hood and many other batman's rogues in the comics. She is also rumour in the batman

I don't see why my statement is bull? The reason I said "it would only work if they did a straight adaptation of the animated film" is because the plot in that film is so good that it makes the character. I also think that if you add this character into the mix then it takes away from Selina Kyle, who I think is a far more interesting/important character.

the idea of adapting Phantasm into a live action movie could be done the exact same way as in the cartoon, just switch out names. Andrea Beaumont for Rachel Dawes.

It wouldnt have to be instant villian. Something could happen to Rachel that would make her go crazy vigilante...and she'd try to help Batman..and slowly descend into madness-turning evil.

eh Phantasm would be alright as a live action. I personally don't think I would care for it

I'd rather see Rachel die. :cwink: That way Batman tangles with discerning the difference between revenge and justice in a new light.

Although MotP was awesome, I think there are a few villians higher on the list before Phantasm will be concidered. Good thought though, makes me want to watch it again.

wouldnt a masculine phantasm just be the reaper from year two?

Exatcly. Phantasm was based on the Reaper, so you might as well use the original.

It would fit perfectly in Tim Burton's version of Batman Movie..........

I would like to see Tim Burton, Michael Keaton and Danny Elfman
together do one more Gothic Batman movie.

Annette Bening (or Sean Young) is Andrea Beaumont/The Phantasm
and she is Bruce Wayne's first love interest when they were young.

Robert De Niro plays the powerful mob gangster of Gotham City
which substitute for Joker's role in animated movie.
Robert De Niro's role is the reason Bruce/Andrea relationship turn to tragedy and he kills Andrea's father .

We can also have a look back Tim's version of Bruce/Batman's origin
before he encounters Joker in 1989 Batman movie

After years, Andrea comes back to Gotham seek revenge...........
