RPG Application
Screenname of the Proposed RPG’s Game Master: Spideyssuperfan
Do You Have An Instant Messenger that we can reach you on for better conversation? (i.e MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ect.) And if so, what is your screenname?:
I do indeed.
Aim: devinlewis657
Yahoo! Messenger: edlewis657
Gamemasters/Assistant Gamemasters already chosen:
As of yet, just me.
How will the overall layout of the RPG be?:
In keeping with the standard form of every RPG on the Hype!, players will be asked to select a character and then write posts describing that character's actions, feelings, or other pertinent information as the events of the RPG unfold around them.
Premise of RPG, if it is a user created RPG see below for applicable additions to this Applicaton, (Must be a paragraph or longer).
Shock! Horror! When widespread looting of major motion picture Studios film warehouses occur, the unwitting robbers jumble the films themselves together. The films overlap, run together, and the characters in hundreds of motion pictures are united, as one, massive, cast. Original storylines become irrelevant, as some of the most feared villains in the history of Hollywood are thrown together, keeping their unique powers, but not necessarily using them in the same environment as they're used to. Villainy and thuggery abound as the beloved heroes of film, spanning from Tinseltown's golden age to the modern CGI-ridden-action-flick, must work together to prevent the wicked tricksters of cinema from taking over, and destroying, every movie ever made.
What will this RPG bring to the RPG forums? (please write two complete sentences):
A movie RPG where every player will, in some manner, contribute to the struggle between good and evil and, eventually, a happy ending. But, what is a good movie without a bad guy... and a guaranteed sequel? The RPG's continuity will be unique in that each season, although separate from the others, will rely upon the characters and relationships developed between movie characters from previous seasons.
Title Of The RPG You Would Like To Propose:
"Lights? Camera? Action! The Motion Picture RPG"
Example Of Characters Application:
Hype! User Name:
Desired character:
Is your character a 'good-guy' or a 'bad-guy?':
Movie(s) that that character has appeared in:
Release date(s) of film(s):
Which of the following, if any, describes your character?
Superhuman: Your character has superhuman abilities (i.e. Super-speed, flight, super-strength
Alien: Your character is an Extra-Terrestrial
Average-Joe: Your character is a normal person who has access to extraordinary items.
Schemer: Your character works behind closed doors and typically is the master-mind behind a plot to conquer humanity... or save it.
Action star: Your character is a whip-wielding, car-chasing, building-destroying action hero, complete with his trusty pistol and leather fedora.
Gunslinger: Your character is from the ol' west and could beat any yellow-belly this side of the Mississippi in a draw.
Other: Please specify in this nifty blue font.
Genre of film that your character stars in:
Brief history of the character in their films up to the start of the RPG:
Please write, in character, a two-paragraph (No more, no less) sample post. Please ensure that your post is in character, contains dialogue, and conforms to standard guidelines of the English language:
How many times per day do you plan on posting in character?:
What, if anything, can you bring to this RPG?
Do you know how to post pictures on the boards?
Classes within RPG (if applicable): Hero and Villain.
Character Races within RPG (if Applicable): Far too many, if the character was in a movie, then those are the races.
Power layout of the game (powers for classes, races, age, height, etc): See above, I think?
Ash J. Williams
07-20-2007, 04:45 AM
Hype! User Name: Ash J. Williams
Desired character: Ashley "Ash" J. Williams
Is your character a 'good-guy' or a 'bad-guy?': good guy
Movie(s) that that character has appeared in: The Evil Dead, Evil Dead
2, and Army of Darkness
Release date(s) of film(s): 1981, 1987, and 1992
Which of the following, if any, describes your character?
Average-Joe/Superhuman (combination)
Genre of film that your character stars in: Horror
Brief history of the character in their films up to the start of the RPG: Ash has gone through a lot of crap he's been in, dealing with demons and whatnot. He's gone from coward to hero, starting with The Evil Dead and becoming more courageous in Evil Dead 2. By the end of Army of Darkness, nothing really scared him.
In Evil Dead 2, Ash got a chainsaw hand because his right hand was possessed by the spirits of the Necronomicon and in Army of Darkness he got a metal gauntlet to replace the chainsaw. (hope that's good enough)
Please write, in character, a two-paragraph (No more, no less) sample post. Please ensure that your post is in character, contains dialogue, and conforms to standard guidelines of the English language: Being transported through the vortex, Ash finds himself in mainstream film land. He looks around, hoping this a dream.
"Where the hell am I?," he rhetorically questions. "This place doesn't look familar -- it looks like it could be filled with Deadites." Revving up his chainsaw, he gets up off the ground and enters a nearby studio. He sees an unknown film in the works. "Hold it right there!" he exclaims as he draws his shotgun.
How many times per day do you plan on posting in character?:
one to three times
What, if anything, can you bring to this RPG?
I'd say some comic relief and help move the action along.
Do you know how to post pictures on the boards?
Yes...

Very nice. I like it a lot. The only thing I'd change is the concept of the Multi-film world. I didn't really envision it as a vortex, more of a general transformation. The studios aren't around, it is instead a blending of all of the movie worlds.
For instance, when "Back to the Future" combines with "The Matrix," Marty McFly's world with get a distinct greenish tint to it, and Neo will be able to travel to Hill Valley, instead of strictly in "Capital City, USA" (the main area in "The Matrix" series.).

other than that, approved.

Quick question: How do you combine the Matrix with... anything? The nature of the film doesn't really allow it to do so, unless of course, everybody's stuck in the Matrix.

Thanks, blacklight.
Either way, to integrate the Matrix into a shared movie universe would mean either Neo and his friends are nutjobs, or everybody lives in the Matrix. The latter option would mess with a lot of universes, chief among them the time travelling universes.
Also, what timeframe are we using? One would be unable to play Indiana Jones, considering that's set in the 30s/40s, together with more modern day characters such as Marty McFly, for example.

The idea is interesting, and one I've thought about in the past. But the hurdle I always come up against is, that a movie RPG is maybe TOO open.
There's too many different continuities all merging together. And some of these continuities are not only non-compatible, but outright contradictory. It really is something of a mine-field, and one you have to navigate carefully if you want to succeed here. The key is to try and introduce some strict boundaries. Only present-day movie characters. No characters from comic book adaptations, etc, perhaps. Whatever else you think would be appropriate in making the game run smoother.
I'm not going to say "yes" or "no", quite yet. As if done right, this could be an original, interesting RPG. But I need to see how it's going to be handled.

Good points, particularly about "The Matrix." The world I envisioned when the movies come together is one where the continuities themselves are affected. Neo (the Matrix) would be stuck in his idea of The Matrix, unable to leave, while John Anderton (Minority Report) would be running a facility that existed in "Capital City, USA" instead of Washington, D.C. I was planning on making this thread in hopes of ensuring that there was interest in the game, and then creating a graphic or introductory post that explained everything.
"There's too many different continuities all merging together. And some of these continuities are not only non-compatible, but outright contradictory. I know exactly what you mean. This is why I think that the continuities should change around the characters, not the other way around. I also agree with the fact that there must be rigid guidelines, and I have developed a few.
Character rules:
- No characters are to ever, even if they've done it in their films, break the fourth wall. Ever.
- If one of your characters is a stereotypical 'hero,' then your second character must be a 'villain.'
- The character you choose is the character you play, and they're in this alone. Your character cannot be with his sidekick for this story.
- The world around the characters has changed, but the characters themselves haven't. To them, the world is always as it has been. They aren't aware of the changes. Indiana Jones, although probably very disoriented, will still use his bullwhip and pistol.
- No use of extreme mystical or magical powers, unless the character is opposed by their film-adversary. (For example, Darth Vader can't use the Force to kill everyone, unless Luke Skywalker is also a played character)
- Comic book characters are off limits. No if's, ands, or buts.
I planned on augmenting my application with these rules.
Batman
07-20-2007, 01:14 PM
So Star Wars characters are in limits?
Because if so, I'd be interested in taking on Darth Vader.
Then again, I can't possibly see how he could exist in this universe, unless he's out in space all the time, just having discovered the milky way galaxy.
Matt Murdock
07-20-2007, 02:13 PM
He could be a bad guy, mb.
His powers would have to be limited, but he could certainly use the force on a one-on-one setting.
Byrd Man
07-20-2007, 04:39 PM
My two cents: I think instead of them all exsiting in one singular universe, I think they should literally jump out of the movies. Think of it like in Last Action Hero when the boy had the magic ticket that let him go into movies and let movie characters come to the real world.
BTW, if this gets off the ground. I know who I'd like to play.

Indiana Jones isn't much of example, since there's no way he fits into the continuity. His story takes place in the 30s and 40s, so it's not like he can suddenly integrate into a modern setting. It'd have to be present day characters only, which...

Indiana would fit in just fine. He appears in the current continuity for reasons that are explained by the player. Same for Vader.

Also, remember the "long ago" bit. I recall an extended universe comic where they actually came to Earth, and it was the 1850s.

But I have questions. What do you mean by fourth wall??
And what about CG or animated movies??

All right I'm in way too many RPG's as it is. (For me at least) But I like the idea.
But I have questions. What do you mean by fourth wall??
And what about CG or animated movies??
The term originates from english theatre. In a play there are three physical barriers, or 'walls': stage left, stage right, and the backdrop. The 'fourth wall' is the invisible barrier of illusion between the characters on stage and the audience. When a character seems to step through this wall and addresses the aundience directly, or becomes aware of their existence as a piece of fiction, the character has broken the fourth wall.
I will deal with animated characters on a case-by-case basis. Some of those can get a bit muddled.

Please note: I am well aware that there are still many, many kinks to be worked out in this RPG, especially in the area of film-continuity. As of yet, my sole intention is to get a feel about the actual interest this rpg stirs up in people.

In terms of continuity, there's an easy solution. Something warps the film megaverse, causing contradictory realities to intersect with one another. Gradually, the inhabitants of these realms come to realize this (imagine McLane looking out a window in Die Hard and seeing a Brontosaurus, or Rambo throwing down with a Predator). Eventually, one hero discovers the key between realities and goes about fixing what has been done (I propose someone who is iconic as the sort of first action hero, someone like Flash Gordon maybe), assembling as he does a group of heroes with like minds.
There, that's how you can explain Aliens interfering with the Matrix, Jason Vorhees and Rocky duking it out, or whatever you want to do really.
The Question
07-21-2007, 09:38 AM
I still think breaking the Forth Wall should be allowed. If I were to play, I'd want to be Ferris Buler.

The Question
07-21-2007, 01:52 PM
It can get messy. I suppose that it could be allowed, but with mod approval; or at least that's what happened with the ultimate rpg.
I really don't see how it can get messy. At least, any more so than any other plot point. If the character is known for breaking the Fourth Wall (like Ferris), then it should be allowed. I mean, who the hell would want to play as Deadpool if they weren't allowed to break the Fourth Wall?
Matt Murdock
07-21-2007, 01:56 PM
It's not so much the actual storyline that gets messy, it's the aftermath.
Matt Murdock
07-21-2007, 01:57 PM
I know I didn't answer this before, but if a player has proven themselves a good and consistent rp-er, they will be able to*play up to three characters. Given that these are movie characters, 3 is not the maximum limit, but other characters that want to be taken on will be extremely carfully considered.
Also, I've removed the rule that people have to be one good guy and one bad guy. Movie villains ought to be popular enough that they don't need to be forced upon players

Hype! User Name: Obi-John-Kenobi
Desired character: Eric Draven aka: The Crow
Is your character a 'good-guy' or a 'bad-guy?':Good guy
Movie(s) that that character has appeared in:The Crow
Release date(s) of film(s):1994
Other: Supernatural- Eric is a man who was resurrected by a crow (So I guess he's kind of a zombie)
Genre of film that your character stars in:Action
Brief history of the character in their films up to the start of the RPG:
Eric Draven was a rock guitarist who lived in an apartment in Detroit along with his fiancee, Shelley Webster. On "Devil's Night" a group of thugs broke into Eric's home and forced him to watch as they beat and raped Shelley, before shooting them both (which killed Shelley). At the hospital, doctors struggled to keep Eric alive, but a crow appeared in Eric's hospital bed and convinced Eric to give up his life. One year later, Eric is resurrected and is know seeking vengeance on the ones responsible for the death of the woman he loved.
Please write, in character, a two-paragraph (No more, no less) sample post. Please ensure that your post is in character, contains dialogue, and conforms to standard guidelines of the English language:
Eric stared down at the dark, dreary streets of Detroit, perched atop the roof of his old apartment. The crow responsible for bringing Eric back to life, flew over to him and perched atop his left shoulder.
"Did you find any leads?"
The crow squaked once.
"Where?"
The crow squaked once more, then again but more loudly than before.
"Good. Let's go say 'hello' to our old friends."
The crow squaked one last time as Eric leaped down the building. He hit a scafolding, leaped off of it, and landed on a fire escape. He got a running start, then jumped towards the roof-top of a lower building. He ran along its roof and leaped off the side of it. He then landed on top of a dumpster in an alley where he saw his prey.
How many times per day do you plan on posting in character?:
Once, if possible.
What, if anything, can you bring to this RPG?
Expierienced role-playing and a winning attitude!:woot:
Do you know how to post pictures on the boards?
Yes, but I'll post one later if need be.

The warehouse sits quietly, nestled in the glamor and glitz of the Hollywood Hills. A worn-down, rusted, chain-link fence lined with barbed wire is all that separates the modern world from the priceless contents of the old, wooden building.
Within the warehouse's walls lie hundreds of reels of motion picture film and dozens of film props. Sealed in crates, these films have lain silent... unused for years.
Picture if you will an ordinary warehouse situated in the premier real estate of Hollywood. Uninteresting to say the least. Yet, within the walls of this warehouse are reels of film that have entertained people for ages. My name is ***CENSORED***. I am a writer of one of these films, ***CENSORED*** I also told other stories. Stories that terrify even to this day. Tales that told of a ***CENSORED***, one rooted in the pinnacle of man's imagination. However, let me assure you, dear viewer, that the story that is occurring right now in the walls of this warehouse is anything but fiction. It exists in our own four dimensions, and can only be explained by the freak events of a seemingly ordinary night. I warn you, reader, if you are to venture into this warehouse, then you ought to be prepared for all that you will see, for behind its doors is no ***CENSORED*** simply the strange events that happen every so often in human history.
The security guard paid to watch over the warehouse sleeps silently in his booth outside of the warehouse. The television next to his feet, raised high on his desk, flickers on and off, as the signal from the antenna waivers.
A worn down, 1980's pickup truck pulls into the pathway next to the security checkpoint. The front, right wheel rolls into a puddle as rain rhythmically falls on the windshield. The two men in the front seat of the truck sit, smoking cigarettes, contemplating their actions.
"Ready?" Says the man in the driver's seat.
"Ready." His companion mutters.
A portrait of two men. Species: 21st century human. Their names are unimportant, however for the purposes of this tale they will be called "Rob" and "Matt." These two men, like all men of their day and age, are seeking for wealth. Not wealth of life, love, or spirit; but, rather, wealth in the economic sense. Yet, despite their best intentions, their actions of this evening will precipitate an unexplainable series of events that will affect both the films inside the warehouse, and the world outside of it.
The men slide ski-masks over their faces. The man in the driver's seat rolls down his window and, with a flick of his fingers, sends his cigarette onto the rain-covered pavement. He heaves a revolver out of his jacket pocket and opens the door of the pickup.
As he gets out of the truck, the rain pitter-patters on his head.
He glances left and right as he approaches the door to the security checkpoint. With a well placed strike of his elbow, the glass in the door slides off of the glue holding it in place. The man jams his hand into the sarcophagal chamber. He pats the backside of the door with his hand and feels the door handle. He opens the door and slips inside the small room with the security guard. Gripping the pistol in his hand tightly, he delivers a sharp blow with the butt of the gun to the back of the security guard's head.
...Still not done.

There are times, most unexpectedly, when universeses align ever so selectively. When frequencies merge and symphonies dance, and creation abounds orchestrated by chance. Our story begins, as most stories do, in a universe that existed without much to do. Until one day emerged a great cosmic key, that was pursued and quested after by He--who--shall--not--be--named he bore a terrible curse, that interacted quite strangely with this thing called The Force. Chance yes it was, that as the two energies aligned, as eighty-eight miles per hour was breached for the very first time! The temporal storm was created, and it engulfed everything, merging and forcing and entirely new being. A single world created, where strange visitors alike, stood side by side unknowing of why. It was as if it existed always this way, persons unalike joined in one fray. For now great villians have risen, each with the same wish, to rule this universe with a powerful fist. And like always their counterparts too, heroes arrived who opposed violent rule. So now it begins, our story at hand, endless possibilities, no one, single plan. Bound to so few is this universe's fate, everything that happens is what you create.

The guard's body slumps down over the arm of his chair.
The man in the ski mask flips a switch and the metal gate slowly rattles open.
With the flip of another switch, the door to the warehouse opens.
The man gets into his pick-up truck and drives slowly in the darkness of the warehouse's interior. They drive past, and apparently don't notice, a man standing right next to the security booth.

"Imagine if you will the dimension in which you have grown accustomed to living in for your entire existence. It is a dimension of sight and a dimension of sound. Now imagine multiple dimensions laying on top of each other... co-existing to turn a phrase, like sheets on a newly made bed. The dimensions, interconnected, yet some how seperate; each unaware of the other's presence, or even existence.
The path from one dimension to the others locked, though, by forces more powerful than any we can imagine. Consider, however, the possibility that there was a key; able to unlock these boundaries and enable the holder to crossover into the other dimensions, including our own."
The man withdraws a key from his pocket. "It is an ordinary key in may regards, much like this one, but in one given regard it is unique. For as I said, the key allows the user to undo the proverbial lock and chain and step into another dimension. But be aware, dear reader, that the key is not solid. It has no metal form and there is no lock to put it in. The lock is, like the door to my fictional "Twilight Zone," unlocked with the key of imagination.
At this point, three fictional people, characters to be precise, have, perhaps by chance, found a way to tap into the key's power.
The first is a man named Dr. Emmit L. Brown, a man in disgrace from the scientific community. A man disgraced because none of his inventions work, save one. It was a rainy night in the year of 1955 when Doctor Brown was hanging a clock in his bathroom. With one ill-placed foot, he fell and hit his head. When he woke up, he had a picture in his head. To him, the picture was of a device that could send the user backward and forward through time. It was, in reality, a way to harness the key's power.
The second is a man named Anakin Skywalker. He has learned to harness the key's energy through the sheer use of his will. He can summon objects with his mind and do, essentially, anything he wants to; simply because of the power he has harnesed using the key's power.
And lastly, the third man, named Tom Marvolo Riddle who has learned how to use the key for its true purpose - to travel from one dimension to another. Preferring the alias "Lord Voldemort," Riddle has used the power he discovered to throw his own dimension into a state of fear and panic.
Imagine if you will each man, using their power in unison, unmaking the bed that had been so diligently put together, forcing each universe together as though it had always existed in that fasion."
The man raises a finger and points into the warehouse.
"These two men are breaking into a warehouse in the Hollywood hills. A seemingly normal, if illegal occurance. Yet what they fail to realize is that the circumstances that will align, the happenstance of the universe if you will, will put them straight into events that, although they aren't, ought to be... in the Twilight Zone."

Imagine if you will the dimension in which you have grown accustomed to living in for your entire existence. It is a dimension of sight, a dimension of sound, a dimension and mind. Now imagine if you will, multiple dimensions laying on top of each other co-existing, like sheets on a newly made bed; each dimension fully unaware of the existence of the other.
Now picture if you will a key. It is an ordinary key in may regards, but unique in one. One I hold in my hand as I sit here observing each dimension in the back lot of a certain --studio. It is a key that recognizes each dimension, allowing its keeper to pass freely between them. Between both shadow and substance, between things and idea.
Three people, perhaps by chance, have found a way to tap into the key's power. The first is a man named Emmit L. Brown, a man in disgrace from the scientific community for his belief that he has been able to harness the key's ability over time.
The second, a man named Anakin Skywalker, who has learned to control the key's ability to control reality.
And lastly, the third man, named Tom Marvolo Riddle, who has learned to control the key's ablity to over the forces that binds each universe together.
Imagine if you will each man, using their power in unison, unmaking the bed that had been so diligently crafted, forcing each universe together as though it had always existed in that fasion.
Here lies the dimension you are in, of substance, and superstition between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. There is a sign post up ahead. You have just crossed over into--
"No. It can't be--"

At this point 70% of the vote says that the events of the rpg should take place in the real world, or a movie-fied facsimile therein.
At this point the story will go as follows:
- 2 guys break into warehouse.
- look through films
- find harry potter, back to the future, star wars
- take protective metal covers off, releasing all the movie characters.

The backstory seems to be in order. Or at least, the simple basics of it. (I'll let twy ultimately judge whether or not it's enough to garner a true acceptance)
The application is written well enough.

Thank you. :)

Just wanted to make Twy aware (if she wasnt already) the backstory is more than just, "guys break in, film reels open, release movie characters."
My name is Rod Serling. I am a writer of one of these films, "The Planet of the Apes." I also told other stories. Stories that terrify even to this day. Tales that told of a fifth dimension, one rooted in the pit of man's dreams and the pinnacle of his imagination. However, let me assure you, dear viewer, that the story that is occurring right now in the walls of this warehouse is anything but fiction. It exists in our own four dimensions, and can only be explained by the freak events of a seemingly ordinary night. I warn you, reader, if you are to venture into this warehouse, then you ought to be prepared for all that you will see, for behind its doors is no "Twilight Zone..." simply the strange events that happen every so often in human history.

Gripping the pistol in his hand tightly, he delivers a sharp blow with the butt of the gun to the back of the security guard's head.
