At the end of Q1, worldwide sales of the PlayStation 3 stand at approximately 4.48 million (prior to Q1 2007 Sony only quoted units shipped not sold). 3.57 million came in the final half of the previous year, with a disappointing 0.71 million recorded in the first quarter 2007. Despite the console's poor sales in Q1, Sony has announced that it expects to sell a further 10.29 million units in the following three quarters, ending March 2008.

If Sony can meet its forecast then as of March 31, 2008, worldwide PlayStation 3 sales will have reached approximately 14.5 million units.

I want to say that I think it will make it that far, but im not so sure. While im not a fanboy of any of the 3 major systems (i honestly love the competition, and want them all to succeed), i just dont think we could see that many PS3's fly off the shelf. I know the apps are coming, but there really arent any system sellers for the mainstream crowd outside of Madden until COD4, both multiplatform. We have Heavenly Sword, which could push some sales, but then Haze in October? Not much else until 2008, after the Xmas push. Parents want to buy their kids consoles which can play games then, right then. Im thinking around 11.5-12mil for em by March, but not much more. I do hope, however, that I'm proved wrong.

Sales have already increased 135% with a price drop without games. There were no killer apps available but people flooded the stores to get one. When Heavenly Sword comes out (which could, if promoted right, be the next Devil May Cry), and Sony hopefully makes another price drop on the 80 gig, they will be rectifying a lot of mistakes. You can't count past sales that much because things are so much different now. BEfore, the PS3 had s***ty games, now the good ones are just about here.

If they dipped it into the $300s they'd take such a financial hit it wouldn't even be funny. They'd probably fail to procure anything but meager profits even with the software sales added in. I'd probably say that is just wishful thinking until we get something to prove that.

Microsoft is quite a bit larger and more capable than Sony when it comes to taking a short term hit for a long term gain. Sony doesn't have the money to lose for a $300 PS3, not without severely stripping the hardware and skipping on a lot of QA on the manufacturing side of things. $400 maybe, but $300 is just a smidge too low, unless you're talking about 2009 and on.

Sony reports fewer losses than Microsoft

As expected, Sony's game division posted a quarterly loss of $237 million on Thursday off costly and slow PS3 sales. The news comes as rival Microsoft recently posted a $1.2 billion quarterly game loss of its on due to costly warranty extensions for faulty Xbox 360s.

Despite the losses, quarterly revenues were up 60% due to continued PS2 sales and a price reduction of the PSP. The company said that more than 70% of sales were on hardware and accessories.

While speaking to investors, Sony suggested it may be able to break-even on PS3 hardware within the next year due to lowered production costs of the Cell processor, the PS3 graphics card, and Blu-ray components.

Also of note, the company will now disclose hardware and software figures on units sold as opposed to their former and imprecise method of reporting units shipped. Nintendo does the same. Microsoft still reports units shipped.

The profit isn't lost on the PS3, I don't think. I'm trying to find the article where they report their financial earnings in all division. 6 million PS3s have been sold, which is more than the PS2 did at this point in its life cycle. Sure, they're losing money, but they're also gaining A LOT of money still on the PS2. It sells slightly less than the Wii. I forget how much they make a system. Plus, software. All those 1st party phenomenons like GoW and such. I'm sure they're getting paid for those. Once the Cell chip goes to 65 nm and the BR Production costs go down they'll be breaking even on the $600 version, which is why I'm not so sure there will be a price cut for the 80 gig.

Edit. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the PSP has made them 400 million so far. Mid 400 million

All of this talk about Sony's gaming division being more profitable than microsofts is blinkered and foolish. The problem is not sony's gaming division. That's been profitable for years. It's the fact that the gaming divison is the ONLY part of sony that is profitable. The reason sony can't offer any more discounts is because the rest of the company is in debt up to it's eyeballs on account of a certain laptop battery disaster. When taking these issues into account you can see that despite a smaller number of faulty units, hardware issues have put most of sony into hock while most of microsoft still makes more money than an entire european country.

They don't need to. With about 109 million PS 1s and way over 120 million PS2s, SOny could sit this generation out and still have made more profits off of just 2 generations than any other gaming company. With the PSP making money and the PS2s still selling, the Sony gaming division as a whole is selling more than the Microsoft divison (perhaps that is more appropriate to say because Xtro is right).

Also, to address hippy fascist (lol nice), Sony's game division actually made some of the worst losses out of all of their divisions. Overall, they're profits have doubled though thanks to some of their other ventures.



Sales at the game division were actually up 60.5 percent to almost $1.6 billion. Sony said overall hardware sales were up thanks to contributions from the PS3 and increased unit sales of the PS2 and PSP. Sony sold through 710K PS3 units worldwide during the first quarter, as well as 2.14 million units of the PSP and 2.70 million units of the PS2.

Overall software sales were also up thanks to the PS3 and further contributions from PS2 game sales. 4.7 million units of PS3 software were sold, along with 31.1 million units of PS2 software and 9.9 million units of PS2 software.

even with the recent upturn in demand due to the price drop they have only been selling a maximum of 100k per month. In order to meat this target they'd have to sell more than 1 million ps3's per month (there are only about 3.75 million units in homse so far I believe) Short of dropping the price to arround $300 I don't see how that would even be possible.

Playstation Store opening up to download loads of GREAT PS1 games, the thought of having MGS, Resi 1-3, Jedi Power Battles etc all on my hard drive is orgasmic.

HD-TV's getting even cheaper, people wanting a cheap Blu-ray player to watch their blue-ray DVDs, PS3 is the no-brainer in that category.

Reasons not to buy PS3 before March:

X-box 360 offering more games at a cheaper price

Halo 3

Continuous down signs for PS3, loss of exclusives, multi-platform games not to same standard just yet.

Mind blowing exclusives still to come, probably won't arrive until Uncharted, if that.

MGS4 fighting a constant battle to stay exclusive

Wii will be getting its top games in soon, and will be looking like a much nicer, cheaper choice.

GTA has always done well on Sony brands, that's all he is saying. The 360 version is more complete (even though you have to pay for the additional services) but if you own one or the other you'll get it for one or the other. Just IMO.

Obviously the PlayStation brand is/was bigger than the Xbox brand in the UK, as it was everywhere. However, things have changed since the time of the PS2, and between Sony royally screwing Europe with console releases, PS3 versions of games being delayed in Europe (Darkness is the most recent example I can think of) and the loss of the "Football" exclusives, Sony's not the "driving force" they used to be. Especially now since they are at a huge software and pricing disadvantage.

I didnt say no one would buy it on 360, what I mean is people in the UK are just like that, why do you think the PS3 broke the records on launch over here, despite there being a much better service on the 360 for a cheaper price?

People are comfertable with GTA4 on the PS, and casual gamers that play it will prefer to play it on PS3 as opposed to 360.

I'm not justifying it here, its downright crazy imo, but the majority of UK gamers have 2 things on their mind: Pro Evolution Soccer and Grand Theft Auto, both famous brands that their comfertable with on the PS1-3, despite them being on 360.

All the casual gamers I know (and thats a fair few) want a PS3 for those games, dspite them being on 360, its just the way casual "spend most of my life in the pub" people think.

There is still no news on High Street retailers and other online retailers dropping there prices anytime soon, but with the new ps3’s with larger storage space coming out pretty soon i wouldnt be surprised if we see them sell even cheaper in the near future.

We were on the edge about whether or not to bring this to your attention, because we didn't know how they would be in stock. But, just so you know, you can now buy a 20GB PS3 for $450 at Gamestop.com. It's weird, largely because it's just not really a good bargain. Is saving $50 bucks really a fair trade for a hard drive with less space than your discs? We don't think so.

The new model features the million-selling game MotorStorm in the box, allowing up to 12 players to play online at one time, hitting the dirt in this visually-arresting, fast-paced racing title.

"The new model will provide ample storage space to meet the appetites of those who wish to download content today, and for many more years to come. The 80GB model joins the existing 60GB PS3 that has been available at retail since launch last November. The 60GB PS3 is currently enjoying a surge in sales following a price reduction in the US and Canada on July 9 of $100 to $499/$549 CND. Since that date, unit sales at the company's top five retailers have jumped 113% when compared to the average sales of four weeks prior to the price drop. SCEA will continue to sell the 60GB in the US and Canada at the new, reduced price until current inventory is depleted, which is predicted to be this fall based on current consumer demand.

Throughout the holidays and this fiscal year, more than 120 new first and third-party software titles will be available for North American PS3 users to enjoy, in addition to the more than 40 software titles currently available. Key upcoming first-party titles include Folklore, Heavenly Sword, LAIR, NBA '08, Ratchet & Clank(R) Future: Tools of Destruction, SingStar, SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation, The eye of Judgment, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, PAIN, and Warhawk.

Both the 80GB and 60GB PS3 models come standard with Cell Broadband Engine (Cell/B.E.), built-in hard disk drive, 1080p high-definition output, Wi-Fi connectivity, SIXAXIS wireless controller and Blu-ray Disc player. So how good is the console when put under extreme operating pressure and alternating environments The total concept of the Ps3 console instills robustness, stability and durability, the overall package combines the latest chip technology and peripheral advancements. The following results of the console are noteworthy reading and were done under the following guidelines. Results were recorded accurately to provide an actual operating statistic.


The following conditions were applied to each testing environment

• Continuous usuage of 108hours with no interruption to power supply
• Game of choice was Resistance Fall of Man & Motor Storm, Enchanted Arms
• Blu Ray movies – Several – around 10 different titles , Casino Royale, The Departed, Pirates of the Caribbean, Terminator 2, Superman Returns…
• Console was positioned on standalone timber unit with approximate 10cms of airflow under neath.
• Same 10 players were used over this period each playing or using the unit for a maximum of 1.5hours in any given session.

Console Ran continuous for the 108hours with only once incident happening at 12 hours in – a slight vibration coming from the tray area which lasted approximately 20 seconds. For the remaining time allocated no incidents were reported

Environment 2 Back of a Freezer Van – unit was placed inside the closed van with controllers and screen mounted outside, - no one was willing to sit in side the van for any extended period of time
Temperature Started at 50F and was progressively scaled down over the next 4 days to reach 0degrees.
Incidents We noticed a slight sluggishness in playback once the temperature reached 0 degrees , this was maintained for the last 24hours, with 12 hours to go we thought we were going to crash with a sudden , blackout to the screen, this was tracked down to condensation on the cord for the screen.
108hours in and still working fine

Environment 3 Heat Sauna – again console inside and controllers and screen outside.
Starting temperature was 100F and Gradually increased to 120F over the last 24hours.
Incidents Strangley enough we thought this would prove to be the ultimate area to kill the console, and to our surprise the only incident we noticed was a slight burning smell that came in around 64hours at 110F, the console was extremely hot when we finished the overall test but had come thru all environments with flying colours.
This console is now back in a normal environment and working fine.

Wii hat Xbox 360 bei Gesamt-VKZ bereits überholt...


Heute sind endlich mal wieder ein paar Verkaufszahlen aus Deutschland aufgetaucht. Diese nannte ein Brancheninsider unter Berufung auf Zahlen der Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung (GfK) gegenüber der "Euro am Sonntag".
Die Gesamt-Verkaufszahlen haben den Stand Ende Juli, zu diesem Zeitpunkt zog Nintendos Wii (Release Dezember 2006) erstmals an Microsofts Xbox 360 (Dezember 2005) vorbei. Mit fast 200.000 Einheiten weniger liegt Sonys PlayStation 3 auf den dritten Platz, allerdings ist die Konsole in Deutschland erst seit Ende März 2007 erhältlich.

I've got like 2 people who fit that criteria so I end up playing Virtua Fighter almost every week (every second?) and maybe once a week I'll just put it in and level my chracter to get some new hair etc. Fighting games kind of suck without people to play against.

The total sales figures are for up to the end of july, and at this time the Nintendo Wii (released December 2006) surpassed Microsofts Xbox 360 (December 2005) total sales. With nearly 200,000 units Sonys PlayStation 3 is down in the third place, however the console has only been available since the end of March 2007 in Germany.

Games are expensive and Im saving up for the fall titles; I plan on getting at least 5 and thats about $300 right there. I think that it's obvious that the biggest thing holding PS3 back is the price. There's lots of rumors though that Sony is planning to revamp the 20GB PS3 with a 40GB HDD, and offer it at $399 at some point in the future. If they could actually do that and get it out by the holiday season, I think they could see some absolutely amazing sales this year.

A $400 PS3 before Christmas would pretty much be a death blow to the 360 Elite SKU. For $50 less you'd get Blu-Ray, in exchange for 80GB less HDD space, which most people wouldn't care about.

You don't even own the movies you get off of XBL. You rent them digitally, and after the rental period ends it gets deleted automatically. Comparing video rentals through Xbox Live to Blu-Ray is like comparing DivX movie discs to DVD. I would rather own my own movies on a disc than be at the mercy of a service that I have to pay for continually.
