Is box-office golden girl Jessica Alba simply bikini filler?

She's been voted Sexiest Woman in the World this year by FHM magazine, and topped last year's AskMen.com list of 99 most desirable woman. Actress Jessica Alba's star is surely rising, but does the object of so many desires have any actual talent, or is she simply the bikini-filler du jour?

The 26-year-old stunner began her film career when she was 13, appearing in the Camp Nowhere as Gail. She appeared in two national TV commercials as a child, and had branched into TV acting by 1994 with recurring roles on The Secret World of Alex Mack and Flipper.

Alba's big break came in the form of James Cameron's short-lived TV show Dark Angel. Cameron picked her personally from a pool of 1,200 other candidates to play Max Guevara, a genetically-engineered super-soldier on the sci-fi series. Although the show was cancelled after two seasons, Alba's status as the ultimate woman was solidified in the minds and hearts of fanboys everywhere.

Since then she has played a wide variety of skin-baring characters: an aspiring dancer-choreographer in Honey, an exotic dancer in the smash hit Sin City, and the classic Marvel Comics character Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman in two Fantastic Four movies. All told, her movies have grossed over $250-million worldwide.

Alba is no stranger to awards either. In 2001 she received a Teen Choice Award for her role in Dark Angel. Five years later she received an MTV Movie Award for "Sexiest Performance" in Sin City, readers of Askmen.com voted her number one on a list of 99 Most Desirable Women, and she appeared on the cover of GQ and In Style.

But wait, there's more! 2007 was a benchmark year for Alba: Maxim Magazine placed her on the number two spot of their "Top 100," and, after eight million votes, FHM named her the winner as "2007's Sexiest Woman in the World." She also received the Spike TV Guys' Choice Award for "Hottest Female."

Phew.

"Jessica Alba is hot. So hot. Her hotness, in fact, cannot be measured by conventional means ... She has a body which should be immortalized in sculpture, like the marble gods and goddesses of ages past." reads an article on UnderGroundOnline.

Clearly Alba's hottie status cannot be denied. But what about her acting chops?

Well, check out the litmus test of Hollywood talent, RottenTomatoes.com. Alba's average Tomatometer rating is a pitiful 28%.

From the beginning, critics haven't been nice to the star.

Take one review for her early effort Honey: " Whether her character is supposed to be sad, glad, mad or indifferent, Alba wears the same vacuous, Barbie-like expression, which suggests the filmmakers could have replaced her with a mannequin and still gotten the same performance - or perhaps a better one."

Ouch.

Alba was also widely panned for her portrayal of Sue Storm in the Fantastic Four Series: "As for Jessica Alba, perhaps the biggest name in the cast thanks to her television turn on "Dark Angel," she fills out the skin-tight uniform well, but not much more," wrote one critic.

Another review was not so kind. "Who are these half-wit Hollywood clowns that keep hiring cleavage-candy actresses with no measurable talent to play laughably bespectacled scientists in action movies?" demanded critic Rob Blackwelder.

Her most recent effort, the thriller Awake, fared no better. After eviscerating Alba's equally pretty co-star Hayden Christensen, film critic Edward Douglas wrote:

"Jessica Alba isn't much better as the film's love interest, although there's more to the role as the film progresses that gives her a little room to flex the few dramatic muscles she has, even if she's never particularly credible. Her other muscles are given a chance to show their stuff during a bathtub scene with Christensen early in the movie."

In fact, Alba has only appeared in one movie with mosty-positive reviews- Sin City - and even in that one, she was playing a stripper. All of her 2007 films (Fantastic Four: The Rise of the Silver Surfer, The Ten, Good Luck Chuck and Awake) have been overwhelmingly unpopular with critics.

It would appear that scantily-clad roles are the only thing keeping poor Jessica in movies at all. Perhaps critic James Berardinelli put it best in a review of the 2005 flop Into the Blue: "Jessica Alba may be one of the hottest young things working in Hollywood, but she can't act. This year, she has appeared in a trio of movies and has failed to show any noteworthy thespian skills. Still, when it comes to screen presence and eye candy, it's hard to beat Alba. Few actresses look better in a skimpy suit..."

Alba herself has complained of being typecast as a "whore," saying she wants to eventually be more selective about her film roles and stop playing the sex kitten.

Up next for the California native is the comedy The Love Guru, Japanese horror remake The Eye and a reprisal of her stripper role in Sin City 2.
