View Full Version : Stark's Alcohol problem...
I hope it's at least hinted at in this movie and followed up in sequels.Come on really,an alcoholic billionaire superhero who lets it all go with reckless abandon? That would be a bold move and make for a juicy story in part 2 or 3.

That's the plan from what Fav has said.

^The alcoholism is a really interesting facet of his character, so I'm glad to hear it.

I hope in the sequel he goes into battle drunk.
That would be really interesting to see.

I doubt it will be no more highlighted than harry's 'drinking problems' in spidey 2.
They dont want their main demographic emulating their hero by downing scotch every night.
I've never seen the effects of alcoholism seriously addressed in this rating bracket, it would be interesting to see how much they are allowed to focus on the reality of it.

Hope we see a drunken suited Iron Man, and the tragedy that ensues.

Billy Wilder's THE LOST WEEKEND is a PG rated film and is one of the first (and still one of the best) depictions of alcoholism, so it can be done.
Besides Marvel didn't worry when the storyline was originally published in the comics (and the main demographic was children).

Well since we see him drinking in a good portion of the trailer I don't think you will have a problem with it being missed or left out of the story. That and as has been mentioned Fav has addressed this in interviews.
I guess the real question is how far can it be taken/explored in the sequels. Unfortunately it might come down to it being a business descion for Marvel and their partners.
Might be kinda hard to market an Iron Man figure that really wets himself and stumbles around..:woot:.. but would love to see them try!

Well I find it interesting that he can drink gallons of Scotch without a problem, but if he lights up one cigarette it's R rated city for this film.:whatever: :woot:

Robert Downey had an alchol problem so i wonder if they will actually incorporate that aspect in future movies

Another reason why Downey is a perfect fit for this role. He would surely bring some real-life depth to the alcoholism angle, no doubt.

I think I'm looking forward to the potential of a sequel more than the film itself. I think we're getting the happy go-lucky Tony Stark in this version while we plant the seeds for some form of 'Devil in the Bottle' for the sequel.
I don't really wanna see him fight drunk, I think it'll come off as cheesy...what I really want to see is the Mandarin worked into the sequel. So say we have the Mandarin off stirrin **** somewhere and Stark is alerted to it...but he's so drunk that he can't even get INTO the suit, thus unable to prevent whatever the Mandarin is doing. That whole lapse into alcoholism and fall from grace is something I think can be explored really well on film.
However, with the hype leading into an Avengers film I'm not so sure we'd wanna carry a drunk Tony Stark into that...maybe alcoholic Iron Man needs to wait for after the formation of the Avengers...

we must take into considertion that avengers is still a long ways off (assuming they make all the solo films BEFORE the ensemble flick)...with antman, captain america, thor, and maybe even other characters still needing to be produced, it would not be crazy to think that they could get ironman2 finished before an avengers film comes to fruition...
also, i have to agree that him fighting drunk would be silly....maybe fighting hung over though could work? police sirens, people screaming and smashing glass all hindering his fighting because hes so incredibly hungover lol? but not against a huge villian...someone small and insignificant.

I look forward to seeing Stark having to give up the suit to Rhodey to kick his addiction.
