Run Zorah Run!! BLADE RUNNER Reshoots Famous Street Gundown!!

Merrick (http://www.aintitcool.com/%E2%80%9Dmailto:merrick@aintitcool.com%22) here…
…with a supercool bit of news that should get Geeks going.
For a long while, we’ve been hearing about the forthcoming mega DVD of BLADE RUNNER. We’ve heard all kindsa stories about what material the set would contain (like multiple versions of the film, including a new edit that addresses continuity gaffs, FX inconsistencies, etc.) But, we hadn’t heard much about just how extensive this undertaking might be.
Now we have a sense…
Joanna Cassidy (who played Replicant Zhora in the film – she’s the one Harrison Ford runs down on the street & shoots in the back) has just finished shooting new material for the forthcoming DVD restoration!
Joanna has just finished re-shooting her scenes from the original BLADE RUNNER movie. Joanna is wearing her original outfit (which she kept over from the first production). These new scenes will be part of the upcoming special BLADE RUNNER DVD re-release. Check back for more details.
…says HER OFFICIAL WEBSITE (http://www.joannacassidy.com/welcome.htm). You can glean a few more details HERE (http://www.filmick.co.uk/2007/04/bladerunner-reshoots-yep-for-upcoming.html).
Wonder if other scenes will be similarly adjusted/re-approached for the DVD set? It’s a safe bet wire removal (that Police Spinner lifting off from the street in the beginning of the film) and smoothing out the blending of some matte paintings are on the agenda.
If you know more about what’s happening with this, please DROP ME A LINE (merrick@aintitcool.com)!!!

<h1>CHECK OUT THIS OFT-REFERENCED BUT RARELY SEEN DELETED SEQUENCE IN WHICH DECKARD VISITS HOLDEN (THE GUY WHO GETS SHOT IN THE OPENING SCENE) IN THE HOSPITAL!!! (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6746010032825352181&q=deckard+visits+holden+in+hospital)</h1>

By the way, if you’ve never seen a British documentary called ON THE EDGE OF BLADE RUNNER, it’s highly recommended. If I recall correctly (and I may not be right about this), this is the piece in the filmmakers first revealed whether or not Deckard is a Replicant. It’s a remarkably honest & insightful look at the making of the film. Here it is for your viewing pleasure…via the peculiar wonder of YouTube!

Just read that on Ain't it Cool as well. I remember them saying the DVD would be out by April, but I guess it looks like it's gonna be sometime later this year. Disappointing, but at least we're still getting it. I've been waiting for this for years.

I also find it funny that yet another of Harrison Ford's scenes where he shoots someone is being altered. :)

Breakdown of the 'Blade Runner' Mega-Super Edition
Posted May 23rd 2007 11:32AM by Scott Weinberg
Filed under: Action & Adventure, Classics, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Warner Brothers, Fandom, Home Entertainment
A while back we heard that Warner Bros. was planning a long overdue super-special edition of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner -- and it was news that had the hardcore sci-fi fanatics drooling in anticipation. Now we get word from DavisDVD.com regarding the complete specs on that package. Fair warning, though, before you get all excited: The contents listed below represent what will be on the Australian-release DVD set, although it's assumed that the American version will be pretty much identical. Here's what we've got:

Disc 1 -- The Final Cut -- Ridley Scott's "definitive" version of the film, complete with new footage, extended scenes and upgraded special effects.

Disc 2 -- Older Versions -- Here you'll find the 1982 theatrical cut, the 1982 international cut and the 1992 director's cut, which is most likely what's in your DVD collection right now.

Disc 3 -- Dangerous Days: The Making of Blade Runner -- A brand-new, feature-length documentary that looks to be the "definitive" piece on the film. Cast and crew, critics and colleagues will share their thoughts on the production, the film and the long-lasting impact of Blade Runner.

Disc 4 -- Enhanced Bonus Content -- A whole disc full of featurettes that will focus on six distinct areas: Inception, Pre-Production, Production, Post-Production, Release, Legacy

Disc 5 -- Work Print -- A rough-cut version of the film, plus a 52-minute BBC documentary that's generally considered one of the coolest looks at the film.

Plus the thing will come in a really slick silver briefcase (!) that houses a lenticular mini-poster, a collectible "model spinner," an origami unicorn, a bunch of photos and a letter from Sir Ridley Scott himself. Wow. We don't have a release date locked in yet, but September seems to be the month. Can't wait.

Footage From BLADE RUNNER: FINAL CUT Slices Onto The Internets!! See Adama Take A Crap On Metaphysics!!

Merrick here...

Yahoo has posted four clips from the forthcoming BLADE RUNNER re-edit/face lift/partial re-edit/all-around cleaning.

Included in the selection are a preview of DANGEROUS DAYS, the newly commissioned mega-documentary chronicling the making of the film, quite a bit of the retooled Zhora street gundown (for which Joanna Cassidy recently re-shot new footage), "the Unicorn scene" (which, according to Ridley Scott, is one of the substantial clues that Ford's Deckard character is a Replicant...)

I swiped these pictures from TheDigitalBits. You can read more about the specs for the specific packages HERE (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/br2007/announce.html)!

Okay...so all of this is way cool by me. However, I'm dyin' to get a good look at some of the effects (reworked and new) being dropped into this thing.

BLADE RUNNER: FINAL CUT releases December 18. There are repeated, very hushed, and extremely inconclusive rumors suggesting some sort of theatrical release for the project beyond the anounced LA / NYC release. Personally, I'd bet against it...but you never can tell. I'd love to see this "definitive" version on a great big screen, at least one time.

DOCUMENTARY DANGEROUS DAYS: MAKING BLADE RUNNER
A feature-length authoritative documentary revealing all the elements that shaped this hugely influential cinema landmark. Cast, crew, critics and colleagues give a behind-the-scenes, in-depth look at the film -- from its literary roots and inception through casting, production, visuals and special effects to its controversial legacy and place in Hollywood history.
Disc Three
1982 THEATRICAL VERSION
This is the version that introduced U.S. movie-going audiences to a revolutionary film with a new and excitingly provocative vision of the near-future. It contains Deckard/Harrison Ford's character narration and has Deckard and Rachel's (Sean Young) "happy ending" escape scene.
1982 INTERNATIONAL VERSION
Also used on U.S. home video, laserdisc and cable releases up to 1992. This version is not rated, and contains some extended action scenes in contrast to the Theatrical Version.
1992 DIRECTOR'S CUT
The Director's Cut omits Deckard's voiceover narration and removes the "happy ending" finale. It adds the famously-controversial "unicorn" sequence, a vision that Deckard has which suggests that he, too, may be a replicant.
Disc Four
BONUS DISC - "Enhancement Archive": 90 minutes of deleted footage and rare or never-before-seen items in featurettes and galleries that cover the film's amazing history, production teams, special effects, impact on society, promotional trailers, TV spots, and much more.

Featurette "The Electric Dreamer: Remembering Philip K. Dick"
Featurette "Sacrificial Sheep: The Novel vs. The Film"
Philip K. Dick: The Blade Runner Interviews (audio)
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep Cover Gallery (images)
The Art of Blade Runner (image galleries)
Featurette "Signs of the Times: Graphic Design"
Featurette "Fashion Forward: Wardrobe & Styling"
Screen Tests: Rachel & Pris
Featurette "The Light That Burns: Remembering Jordan Cronenweth"
Unit photography gallery
Deleted and alternate scenes
1982 promotional featurettes
Trailers and TV spots
Featurette "Promoting Dystopia: Rendering the Poster Art"
Marketing and merchandise gallery (images)
Featurette "Deck-A-Rep: The True Nature of Rick Deckard"
Featurette "--Nexus Generation: Fans & Filmmakers" Disc Five
WORKPRINT VERSION
This rare version of the film is considered by some to be the most radically different of all the Blade Runner cuts. It includes an altered opening scene, no Deckard narration until the final scenes, no "unicorn" sequence, no Deckard/Rachel "happy ending," altered lines between Batty (Rutger Hauer) and his creator Tyrell (Joe Turkell), alternate music and much more. Also includes:

Commentary by Paul M. Sammon, author of Future Noir: The Making of Blade Runner
Featurette "All Our Variant Futures: From Workprint to Final Cut"

Can someone who is a huge fan of this movie that knows everything answer my question.

Has that definitive directors cut that the fans are always *****ing about come out yet? Is this it or was it that bare bones one I bought that didn't seem as special as the fanboys made it out to be?

What exactly is the history/controversy behind releasing what seems like 3-4 cuts of this film now?

Can someone who is a huge fan of this movie that knows everything answer my question.

Has that definitive directors cut that the fans are always *****ing about come out yet? Is this it or was it that bare bones one I bought that didn't seem as special as the fanboys made it out to be?

What exactly is the history/controversy behind releasing what seems like 3-4 cuts of this film now?

The Final Cut contains the following changes to the Director's Cut:

* The shot of Deckard waiting to eat at the White Dragon has been shortened, its editing reminiscent of the workprint version of the shot. This was done due to the removal of the voiceover.
* All the violent scenes in the International Cut that were deleted in the U.S. theatrical release and Director's Cut are restored to the Final Cut.
* When Bryant and Deckard are looking at the Nexus-6 profiles, Bryant gives a description of Leon's job. This was from the workprint.
* When Gaff and Deckard first appear at Leon's apartment, the landlord now says "Kowalski". Another small bit originally from the workprint.
* Deckard's conversation with the snake merchant Abdul Ben Hassan has been altered so that the dialog is no longer out of sync; Ben Ford's mouth (lip-syncing the spoken dialog) was digitally placed over his father's.
* A shot of the busy crowds in the streets was restored. Immediately after that, a shot of two strippers wearing hockey masks similar to the one worn by Jason Vorhees in the Friday the 13th films was restored. Finally, there's a shot of Deckard talking to another police officer. This sequence takes place just prior to Deckard entering the Snake Pit. These three shots had previously appeared in slightly different form in the workprint version; the last two-thirds of this restored sequence has Brian Eno's "Qu'ran" playing over it.
* The original full-length version of the unicorn dream has been restored. This is a much different version than the one that appeared in the Director's Cut, and has never been in any version seen by the public prior to this one.
* During Deckard's pursuit of Zhora, Joanna Cassidy's face is digitally superimposed over her stunt double.
* When Batty confronts Tyrell, he says, "I want more life, father." (from the workprint version and used in television broadcasts of the film), as opposed to the original line "I want more life, ****er."
* After killing Tyrell, Batty says "I'm sorry Sebastian. Come. Come." when before he merely approached the desperate Sebastian. This is also from the workprint.

Partly as the result of previous complaints, Scott was invited in mid-2000 to help put together a final and definitive version of the film, which was completed in mid-2001. During the process, a new digital print of the film was created from the original negatives, special effects were updated and cleaned, and the sound was remastered in 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound. Unlike the rushed 1992 Director's Cut, Scott personally oversaw the new cut as it was being made. The Special Edition DVD was slated for a Christmastime 2001 release, and was originally rumored to be a three-disc set, including the full international theatrical cut, an early workprint with additional scenes, and the newly-enhanced version, in addition to deleted scenes, extensive cast and crew interviews, and the documentary On the Edge of Blade Runner. But Warner Bros. delayed the "Special Edition" release after legal disputes began with the film's original completion bond guarantors (specifically Jerry Perenchio), who were ceded the copyright to the film when the shooting ran over budget from $21.5 to $28 million.

After years of legal disputes, Warner Bros. announced in 2006 that it had finally secured full distribution rights to the film, and that there would be a three-stage release of the film. First, a digitally remastered single-disc re-release of the 1992 Director's Cut was released on September 5, 2006 in the United States, on October 9, 2006 in Ireland and the UK, and in the following months in continental Europe. Second, Ridley Scott's "Final Cut" of the film began a limited theatrical release in New York and Los Angeles on October 5, 2007.[4] The third and final phase — a multi-disc box set — will be released on the DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray disc formats.[44][45] The set will include the workprint, the two 1982 original theatrical versions (U.S. domestic and uncensored International cuts), the 2006-remastered Director's Cut, the 2007 Final Cut, and bonus features; all are scheduled for release December 18, 2007. Four-disc and two-disc sets will also be released, containing some of the features of the five-disc set.[46][47]

Thanks for the info Black Dust! So this Final Cut should be the best version of the film I take it? Especially if it seems Scott is behind it as well.

There's a couple of people here http://messageboards.bladerunnerthemovie.com/showthread.php?t=15
that have seen the final cut and say it's they're favorite, if you're interested to see what other people have been saying about it.

I just got my DVD the other day... the print work on this is just fantastic!!! some of the best restoration type stuff i've seen ever.

I love the new subtle additions although they could've done the batty letting go fo the dove scene a little better

The sound sounds better, the music sounds more epic in sharper crisper tones, the picture quality is JUST ABS AMAZING!

The best bit of it all is the 3 hour + documentary on the making of the blade runner... it's one of the most well produced fluid and slickly constructed documentaries i've seen on a film... this blows much of the behind the scenes type things on other films by FAR. such brilliant honest interviews, the inclusions of various gaffs and outtakes and seeing Harrison Ford getting pissed at Sean Young when he kisses her on the neck and she starts cracking up... you could see how insulted and angry he looked... he just threw her arm away from him when he tried hugging her... THIS IS BRILLIANT FOOTAGE!

I'm pondering whether to get the 5 disc set or not

On the one hand, the workprint sounds very interesting, and the set itself KICKS ASS...

On the other hand, I don't know how rewatchable the WP cut is, especially when you get almost all the deleted scenes on the other discs. Plus, my room is not huge and I don't want to be carrying that suitcase around and I mean, I don't have a lot of space for my DVDs in my closet so... :(

I'm thinking I'm gonna go with the 4-disc set, but I don't know...

It's a lot of different for just one disc with a version I might not watch that much, and a lot of really cool stuff for which I won't have the space :cmad:

Plus, I still need that X-Files set...

So lemme ask y'all a question.
I bought the "Directors Cut" DVD a few years back, because I had heard all this hype about how awesome Blade Runner was. And I never even managed to finish the film, it was SOOO slow and depressing.
Is the original with voice-over a more positive experience?
I know y'all are all giddy with excitement over the new edition that has just come out, is it better from a story perspective, not just visually?

I read the book by Dick, and it was ok. I just wanted to know if there were any versions of the film that wern't complete downers?

I've only seen the 1992 DC, but the original had a happier ending (unlike the DC and FC that end in the elevator). Other than that, I don't think any of the versions are going to be much "happier" overall. The film is pretty dark and gritty no matter which version you choose.

The original is also pretty ambiguous as to whether or not Deckard is a replicant, whereas the DC and FC make it pretty clear he is (what with the unicorn dream and all). So if the ambiguity makes it a happier movie for you, then there ya go. :)

I love Warner Brothers. When they set out to make a great special edition, they exceed expectations. Bullitt, Casablanca, Rebel Without A Cause, Gone With The Wind, Adventures of Robin Hood, etc., and now Blade Runner. I watched the Final Cut today, as well as some special features. Absolutely amazing. The picture quality and coloring is incredible. Plus, there are so many special features, not to mention four versions of the film, that I don't see how anyone who is into film could pass this up.

I can't say it's definitely going to grow on you if you don't like it at first, but keep it in mind if you can. I think it's one of those films that requires multiple viewings.

I bought the Final cut and just watched it. It looks way better than any release of this film, it's insane. I'd go as far to say this final cut has the most believable and realistic effects I've seen in any film. it's a prefect blend of pratical and digital effects. for they kid that hasn't seen it yet and is wondering if you should buy it, I recommend it since you liked the films listed a few posts up. I'd also put 12 monkeys on the list of films similar to blade runner, not in visuals but in mood and tone. Blade Runner is ALL about mood and tone. The film is dark and bleak, and not to exciting, but it's complex story and over achieving visiuals makes this film one of a kind. it's look has only been matched in animation such as akira and ghost in the shell. If you liked those films too you'd like blade runner.

I'd also say if you liked ridley scotts alien you'd like Blade Runner. I'd call those films Ridley scotts master pieces. The thing is Blade Runner isn't entertainment, it's a work of art from a film maker in his prime. I'd say Minority Report is also on the list of films like blade runner.

I bought my two-disc copy of the Final Cut. The history of the film is amazing. I didn't even know the actor for Leon died back in 1999. :csad: I loved him in "Fifth Element". Many of the people involved in this film have done pretty well for themselves since then. They've even aged nicely too. I felt sympathetic to Harrison Ford when he appeared at the Scream Awards this year. I thought he was getting an award for a film that was so old. But I didn't know how frustrated his experience was during shooting.

I like the interactive menu for this edition. The first DC on DVD had a mediocre menu design.

I can't believe Guillermo del Toro prefers the narrative version. I frigging hate Dekker's narration! But it's awesome to see how many directors have been influenced by Blade Runner.

The only problem I have with this edition is the digital enhancements to the film quality. The contrast is slightly worse, making some details lost in this version. :csad:

Just watched the final cut, and yes, Blade Runner is still one of the most breathtaking and beautiful movies I've ever seen, and yes, its story is still fairly shallow. I do not hesitate to call this movie a visual masterpiece, but a total film masterpiece, I don't think so. The story still isn't that great. The characters are kind of shallow. We don't know much about Deckard, the replicants or whats going on with anything. Still everything else is wonderful, the actors, the cinematography, the set design, all completely top notch.

I get what you mean. After watching "Aliens" so much I realize how subpar it is as a sci-fi story. It reveals itself more as more action suspense than sci-fi thriller.

So I goes to futureshop today to look into the briefcase (btw parents got me the 4 disc)..friggin guy tried selling me an hd player. I grab the briefcase walk over to some shaggyheaded 18 year old employee and ask about the dvd version he says oh wel lthats HD and starts going into his pitch on hd players and how I should buy one.

Ugh I was so p.o.'d..

I told him "F**k you and your HD!"

I'll second that.

the price of the case to get the workprint is so worth it! deleted scense that could make a film of it's own, the idea that dekard might be a skin job, how this whole mess almost didn't get made? awsome!!
by the way... i got 8,253 out of 103,000!!

I just got done watching the Final Cut. Bought the 4 disc version so I plan on watching each cut on down the road.

Haven't seen this movie in a long time. I think I only saw it once, and I fell asleep because it does have a near hypnotic pace and atmosphere. So I don't remember it at all.

Is each version that different?

BTW loved the movie.

The difference between the final cut and the original theatrical cut is immense. The final cut is digitally corrected and more violent where as the theatrical cut has stupid narration and a happy ending for example

I was gonna buy this yesterday the one with the blue cover, but I'm still not sure if I'm gonna like it so I bought ghostbusters 1 and 2 instead. I'm gonna see it later this week so I'll decide if I'll buy it then.

Well, I pre-ordered the 2-disc edition of the Final Cut, and then I had to wait awhile for it to get here for various reasons, but I now I finally have it in my hands, and I am pleased. I didn't have time to sit and watch it tonight, but I most likely will watch the whole thing tomorrow night or Saturday. I've been a big fan of the Director's Cut since it was first released, but this is what I've really been waiting for. After I get to watch it from start to finish, I'll have more to say.

I pretty much agree. The film makes you think and wonder, which is never a bad thing.

I'm glad he was able to reshoot what he did. And it was perfectly integrated, imo.

I just watched the Final Cut last night. The movie looked even more beautiful than it did before. I am not quite sure how much was different (only saw the DC before this version, and off hand I didn't spot many differences). I will probably catch them though, since I am gonna watch each version of the movie.

Main differences in the Final Cut from the Director's Cut...

-- Shortened shots where voiceover was removed (like Deckard eating sushi, etc.)
-- More violence in Tyrell's and Pris' death scenes.
-- More city shots when Deckard researches the snake (for instance, he talks to a cop with an orange facemask.)
-- Fixed audio when Deckard questions the snake maker (they even brought in Harrison Ford's son and applied his scar to shoot it)
-- Fixed sequence involving the death of Zhora
-- Changed Bryant's line early in the film to correct how many replicants are on the run. (He used to say "one of them got fried", now he says two.)
-- Unicorn dream sequence now has a couple extra close-ups of Deckard.
-- Shot of the dove Batty releases into the air now fits with the rest of the set design of the movie.
-- "I want more life, f***er" is now "I want more life, father."

On top of that, the film was cleaned up, and certain visual effects shots were very improved in very subtle ways (i.e. removing strings, etc.).

I did notice the line change. I prefer "I want more life, father." It sounded a tad off to me in the DC when he said the line, and it just sounded better.

yeah, "father" fits the tone of the scene much, much better than "f**ker"

When will the ridiculousness stop already with this film? It's like they just won't stop releasing different versions of this crappy movie and now they're selling all those crappy versions in a neat package! It doesn't matter how many cut of Blade Runner they make, the end result is still the same. They'll all put you to sleep!

no one should go into the film expecting a high pace action thriller. In fact that's how it was marketed in 1982 so many were disappointed. The film is suppose to be driven by character, set design, and strong themes
