>>Boy From Oz, the film, not coming soon
Wednesday Aug 2 17:24 AEST
A film adaptation of the award-winning musical The Boy From Oz is at least
two years away.
Producer Ben Gannon, who created The Boy From Oz stage production, said
there had always been plans to turn the musical spectacular about
entertainer Peter Allen into a film.
"I have always thought it would be a great story for a film because it has
got a lot of great musical numbers in it," said Gannon in Sydney on
Wednesday.
"Unlike a lot of musicals where you have to force people to suddenly start
singing, this is the story about people who are performers ... so you can
actually have them singing for a very legitimate reason rather than singing
while they are washing the dishes."
Gannon said plans to adapt the production for film were still at a very
early stage.
"It would be something that we would look at over the next couple of years,"
he said.
The Boy From Oz stage show opens at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on
Thursday, starring Hollywood actor Hugh Jackman, Chrissy Amphlett, Angela
Toohey and Colleen Hewett.
The first Boy From Oz production was staged in Sydney in March 1998 and went
on to become the most successful new Australian musical.
Jackman took over the lead role when it opened on Broadway in October 2003.
American critics lauded Jackman's Broadway portrayal of Allen - the
flamboyant boy from Tenterfield in NSW who helped define the disco era in
the 1970s and `80s, before succumbing to AIDS in 1992.
"He has got a lot of stature as a performer," Gannon said of Jackman.
"He comes on stage and really fills the space."
More than 150 people work on-stage and behind-the-scenes in the current
Australian production, which has cost around $10 million.
The tour will include more than 40 shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide,
Brisbane and Perth, with each venue seating up to 10,000 people.
"I don't think there has been any other musical that has been done on a
large scale like this," said Gannon.<<

Personally, I don't want a TBFO movie. I think Hugh needs to let that role go. I know he loves it, I know his performance has been critically acclaimed. I am so happy he has decided to share his perfomance and the show with us Aussies and I am going to see him. Maybe my opinion will change once I've seen the show, but I would still rather he took different, new roles in movie musicals rather than reprising roles he's already done on stage.
Although since he only did a one-night performance of Carousel that wasn't seen widely, I'm funnily enough not adverse to his involvement in that project. If TBFO was going to be released on DVD, I'd much rather it be a recording of the actual theatre/arena production. But that's just me.
It's kind of like how I feel about Wolverine... he's great in the role (and I LOVE Wolverine), but after this spin-off, I kind of hope he retires that character as well. I don't want Hugh to just keep revisiting characters because they happen to be successful, as good as they are, ie. Peter Allen and Wolverine. I want Hugh to take on new and different roles, to keep explanding his range etc.
I am extremely excited about Hugh's involvement in movie musicals, I just want them to be something new that he hasn't done before...

I agree with you on all those points, Seersha. He's only done Carousel as a concert version with much of the "book" condensed, so it will be his first time acting it out properly. I'm disappointed they're not going for a DVD of the arena tour. I want a record of the show rather than a movie. There's far better material for a movie musical.
I have mixed feelings about Wolverine. To me he seems to be getting further away from the character with each movie, so I'm hoping the spinoff can
be a return to roots. With so many projects, it seems a shame to keep returning to the old characters.

2 AUGUST 2006
Hugh Jackman's last blockbuster, X-Men 3, saw him sporting oversize sideburns and head-to-toe leather as he took on the world and won. The chisel-jawed actor donned a less intimidating look on his return to Sydney, however, when he took to the stage in his hometown wearing silver trousers and a pineapple-print shirt on Wednesday.
The 38-year-old, who is becoming well-known for his versatility, donned the funky costume for his appearance in the appropriately titled Boy From Oz musical. Bringing the all-singing, all-dancing spectacular to the city of his birth marks a triumphant homecoming for the statuesque actor who has already picked up a Tony Award for his performance on Broadway in the role.
In the production he plays flamboyant Australian singer-songwriter Peter Allen, who became an icon of the disco era in the late Seventies and early Eighties. And there are some parallels between the musician's life and that of the actor who plays him, as Hugh has likewise earned his place among the showbiz industry's elite.
Never one to rest on his laurels, the hard-working father of two has a slew of new movies in the pipeline. Indeed the performer has no less than nine major productions in the works for the next 18 months, including an X-Men spin-off centring on his fearsome character Wolverine. In keeping with his taste for disparate roles, there will also be a heart-rending romance, a thriller, two animated adventures and a couple of old-fashioned dramas.

I'm not so sure about a BFO movie either. It loses something when it's not live, and that crazed ad-libbing he did during the show as part of what made it so much fun. I'd rather see a recording of the show itself instead.
But Carousel? THAT I want to see, just for "Soliloquy" alone. I've seen it on Broadway, and I thought it was much better than Oklahoma--the story is darker and the music is phenomenal. One of my friends did see Hugh in the Carnegie Hall show and said he was great.

Oh hey...come on now with posting the booty-shaking videos when I'm at work and can't watch them. :( I had to sneak it at work myself - thank goodness I'm in a corner all by myself!
About a BFO movie - I tend to agree, but there are a lot of people who never had a chance to see Hugh perform it "live" and he has such a reputation with this role I guess it would make sense for it to be a movie. But I think it would be different from the live show - you could do real settings (like his concerts) that were limited with a live show.
About Carousel - I LOVE the songs in that show! He supposedly has so many movie musicals in the pipeline (this, the rumored Guys & Dolls, If You Could See Me Now, possibly BFO, his name was attached to Sunset Blvd.) and I have NO PATIENCE!! I'm not getting any younger! :D My problem is when things are announced I want to see them tomorrow!

As Carousel role secured, life's a ride for Jackman
Michael Bodey and Rosalie Higson

THE Boy from Oz is quickly becoming Gene Kelly.
On the eve of Hugh Jackman's Australian debut in the arena tour of The Boy From Oz tonight in Sydney, US studio Fox 2000 announced the Australian would star as Billy Bigelow in a remake of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, Carousel. It's merely the latest project in an incredible period of industry for the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts graduate.
While in Australia, Jackman is establishing a mini-studio based at Fox Studios in Sydney, Seed Productions, with production partner John Palermo.
Its imminent launch will flag the development of a number of mid-budget Australian films made by local heavyweights. The company has already spoken to directors Rowan Woods (The Boys, Little Fish), Ray Lawrence (Jindabyne, Lantana) and Collateral writer Stuart Beattie, among others, about future collaborations.
Jackman also has a deal with Disney to develop other musicals. Guys and Dolls is on his wish list and he has commissioned a contemporary film musical.
And Jackman might not be lost to local stages after The Boy From Oz. The Australian understands he has had preliminary discussions with the Sydney Theatre Company about possibly performing with a major female actor in the 2008 season.
He has four films due for release in the coming six months - Woody Allen's Scoop, Flushed Away, The Fountain and early Academy Award tip, The Prestige - before shooting The Tourist and Baz Luhrmann's historical epic with Nicole Kidman. His X-Men spin-off, Wolverine, waits in the wings.
But before that, he reprises his Tony Award-winning Broadway role as the flamboyant Australian entertainer Peter Allen in Sydney tonight ahead of its national tour.
He'll front 40 singer-dancers, a 100-voice choir and a 25-piece orchestra, just as it should be, director Kenny Ortega said.
"Musical theatre was initially imagined to be produced in arenas, and I think this show is quite appropriate for the big venue because of its structure, with Peter in concert and flashbacks into his life," Ortega said.
"And that Peter actually opened the Entertainment Centre, it all feels very right."

Not to jinx anything, but:
http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=12332
By Mike Sampson
Source: Variety
Hugh Jackman, who's in Australia working on the musical "The Boy From Oz," is looking to finally bring his song-and-dance talents to the big screen. Fox has signed a deal with Jackman to star in and produce a remake of the 1956 musical CAROUSEL. The movie was based on the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, which hit the stage in 1945. The plot follows Billy Bigelow, a carnival barker whose ego leads him to an untimely death and an unexpected chance at repentance in the form of one day to turn around the life of a rebellious teen. Jackman recently signed a production deal with Disney to do musicals but CAROUSEL has a leg up because Fox owns the rights and is the home studio of another Jackman pet project WOLVERINE. Fox would do kind to lock up any deal with Jackman they can get before his price goes through the roof after the Best Actor nomination (and likely win) for THE FOUNTAIN. Yeah I said it. He's that good.

Oh, that's just not right.... :)
Yeah, I'm thinking they could work some of that improv stuff into concert scenes in a BFO movie to give people an idea what that was like. And with the biography movies about singers being so popular lately like "Ray" and "Walk the Line" (and I hear Jesse Martin is doing a Martin Gaye movie, I cannot wait for that), it could work.
I'm not so sure Sunset Blvd would translate as a movie musical. The movie is such a classic I'm not sure people would be so open to a musical version as a movie.
I have actually never seen "Guys & Dolls," so I would love to finally see it. I would have loved to have seen it in London with Ewan McGregor last year.
But I'm still reeling from the "Carousel" news...that is just so cool.

I think a lot depends on where Hugh's "star" is when he does these movies (if the rumors we are hearing are correct). I've seen him in clips from Sunset Blvd. when he did it in Australia and he was marvelous - plus I love the original non-musical movie and I have the musical CD with Glenn Close. Those songs are PERFECT for Hugh. I actually rented Guys & Dolls a few weeks ago and he is perfect for the Marlon Brando role of Sky Masterson (and just to hear him sing "Luck Be a Lady Tonight"!). I have also heard him sing in Carousel - this should be FABULOUS. Oh heck, he would be great in ANY movie musical! I just want people to hear him sing on the big screen!!!

Some heaping praise I found in the new Premiere:
Hugh Jackman is clearly the man of the season. Following the whopping success of X-Men: The Last Stand, he's starring in Woody Allen's Scoop, voicing characters in the animated films Flushed Away and Happy Feet, and appearing in two of the fall's most anticipated films, Christopher Nolan's The Prestige and Darren Aronofksy's The Fountain.
Just as Nolan (Memento, Batman Begins) and Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) are young auteurs most A-List actors would kill to work with, Jackman is an actor who most A-list directors would kill to work with: The range he shows in going from X3 to Scoop to The Fountain is astonishing, something we're not used to seeing in someone with such classic movie star looks.
But then again, Jackman is Australian, and something in the water, or the training, seems to produce movie stars (Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett, Russell Crowe) who are true actors.
The Fountain is also going to be one of the more controversial movies of the fall. It's a dizzying, confounding, and often thrilling meditation on the acceptance of death as part of life, a love story (between Jackman and Aronofsky's fiancee, Rachel Weisz) that spans a thousand years. It's daring and moving filmmaking, and a must-see for people who care about adventurous cinema.

Danoyse, thank you posting those scans.
I think this is his first Premiere cover as himself rather than Wolverine and I wonder how many people see that picture and have to read the caption to know who it is. (I think this is a good thing - when an actor becomes instantly recognisable it becomes hard to see through to the character he is playing)

That's true. He was only just on the cover two issues ago as Wolverine, but this is totally different. And the interview is all about finally "mutating" (their words) to leading man status.
Regardless of what one might read on a certain hate thread , he's been so well received as Wolverine for so long I think it's being considered a welcome change now, judging by the tone of the article.

And the interview is all about finally "mutating" (their words) to leading man status.
He's always been a leading man, just not in the top Hollywood movies. I think Baz Luhrmann was closer in The Hollywood Reporter (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1002614634):
He's always been a leading man, but he is moving toward being an iconic leading man, which is perfect for the story we're doing.
I'm looking forward to reading the magazine in a few weeks. We get Empire, you get Premiere but at least both get published sometime in both the UK and US. He's a favourite of the Empire staff so you never know...

IT'S a well-known fact that Hugh Jackman possesses super powers, most vividly expressed not in the X-Men films but in his defeat of bad reviews for the New York version of The Boy from Oz in 2003.
By and large, critics panned the show but bowed to Jackman's charisma. The musical ran for a year and he won a Tony award.

"Oh, nice bling," Jackman said to the millionaire's wife as she hid behind heavily bejewelled hands.
"And what do you do?" Jackman asked the millionaire. Peter Allen would have loved it.

The Boy from Oz - conceived by an Australian, about an Australian, and starring an Australian - was a smash hit when it opened on Broadway three years ago, earning Jackman a Tony award.
But fans of Allen and Jackman never expected to see the in-demand Hollywood star play the role in Australia.
New York critics said Jackman's performance was one of the best you could hope to see.
The Aussie press seem to be reacting to the show a lot more positively than the New York press, it seems. Of course they remark on Hugh's great performance, but so far I haven't read or heard of anyone slamming the actual show. I wonder if that's because it's different to the Broadway show, the fact that Peter Allen and Hugh are Australian or a combination of all three. I personally do think that Aussies love Aussies who love them back, and everyone seems to love Hugh :)

Just going through the rest of my new Premiere magazine (wow, there really is more stuff in here than the Hugh interview :O ), and found this under the Libby Gelman-Waxner (who I know is someone else, but I can't remember who it is) review of X3:
"Speaking of which, Andrew and I agreed that our favorite X-guy is Hugh Jackman as Wolverine; Hugh is so sexy that he doesn't really need a superpower. Towards the end of the movie, Famke Janssen as Dark Phoenix, attempts to use her supremely developed abilities to destroy the universe, and Andrew and I were especially grateful that Famke's apocalypse also managed to shred Hugh's shirt."
LOL! :)

That may surprise some, but I firmly believe Jackman is now our greatest male star.
Not just because of his talent and his looks, but because he is accessible, gregarious and, gosh, just so darn nice.
The man is a natural, warm human being.
It's hard to see Hollywood ever destroying that. Touch wood.

McGregor Joins Jackman in The Tourist
Source: Production Weekly
August 7, 2006
Ewan McGregor will star opposite Hugh Jackman in Swiss director Marcel Langenegger's The Tourist, reports Production Weekly. The drama was written by Mark Bomback (Constantine), Patrick Marber (Closer) and Jason Keller.
McGregor plays Jonathan, an accountant disconnected from life, who is reinvigorated by his new friend Wyatt (Jackman), a powerful and charismatic lawyer, who introduces Jonathan to a mysterious sex club known as The List. Shortly after meeting the woman of his dreams, Jonathan becomes the number one suspect in not only the woman's disappearance and possible murder, but also a $20 million theft.
Production is scheduled to start on October 9 in New York.

Here's the Variety review for the Aussie "Boy From Oz"...the link is worth it for the photo (no, he didn't wear that on Broadway! ), but here's some some of the gushing if you can't get the article:
The most powerful element onstage, capable of hitting the back rows of even a vast barn like the Sydney Entertainment Center, is Jackman. The show unfolds like a guided Allen retrospective from beyond the grave, allowing for mentions ranging from Nicole Kidman's recent wedding to Mel Gibson's DUI disgrace to self-referential nods to Australians in Hollywood. Those contemporary comments contribute to bounce the focus back and forth between subject and star.
While Jackman is clearly playing a part, mincing and cavorting and flirting up a storm, there are equal parts of his own persona at play with Allen's. The strong sense of an international star acknowledging his roots, eager to give something back to the country he came from will ensure this show an enthusiastic welcome across Australia.
And if Jackman chooses, as has been speculated, to take the show back to New York and retrace Allen's steps to Radio City, who's to stop him?
Now, THAT would be nice!

She's a he, and I can't remember who he really is though...but it was a very funny (positive) review of X3, here's another highlight:
"The mutants have different superpowers; Rebecca Romijn, as Mystique, has scaly blue skin and can shape-shift, while Halle Berry, as Storm, can change the weather. So I've been wondering if maybe I'm also an X-person, only I haven't discovered my personal superpower, although if I'm anything like Rebecca or Halle, it probably involves cleavage."

Did anyone see Brad Pitt's movie "Fight Club" and would care to explain this? (I'm not touching the "screwing instead of fighting" line!)

Production Weekly just reported that Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor have agreed to star in The Tourist (Jackman's involvement was originally announced at Cannes), a movie that sounds a whole hell of a lot like Fight Club, except with screwing instead of fighting.
Here's the summary: McGregor will play Jonathan, "an accountant disconnected from life, who is reinvigorated by his new friend Wyatt (Jackman), a powerful and charismatic lawyer who introduces Jonathan to a mysterious sex club known as The List." Personal awakening brought about by cool new club? Check. And there's more: "Shortly after meeting the woman of his dreams, Jonathan becomes the number one suspect in not only the woman's disappearance and possible murder but also a 20 million dollar theft." Major crime, and the sudden realization of the sketchiness of your new best friend? Check and check. Now, don't get me wrong -- I'm not saying I won't see it, just that it's Fight Club, 2006.

Wow, he looks exhausted...
I think the "problem" (if you can call it that) is that for Boy from Oz, he usually loses a lot of weight to play Peter Allen and it affects the way he looks, especially since he's so tall and lean to begin with. This is one of the reasons I don't really want to see him playing Peter forever - after doing the run on Broadway for over a year at the end (in pictures at least) he looked exhausted, and even in a NY Times interview he admitted as much. This is why I also think that when he comes back to Broadway, aside from his movie commitments, he will never do a show for a year again - maybe three to six months. This awards show aired a week before he started the arena tour.

Yes, I've seen Fight Club (and it is bloody brilliant). It stars Edward Norton as an insurance appraiser who's so fed up and disillusioned with his job and life that he shows up at terminal illness support groups just to emotional with others and let everything out.
Then he meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt), this wild soap salesman who does all these crazy things (sticking frames from porno movies into family movies at the local movie theater, etc), and the two of them start this club where they beat the crap out of each other.
They get all these other frustrated guys to join in an underground ("You do not talk about Fight Club!") club that gets bigger and bigger, and they start doing vandalism and other violent acts in public, until finally they plan to blow up credit card companies so everyone's balance goes to zero. That's when Edward Norton's character realizes it's all gone too far and tries to stop Tyler and his Fight Club.
But the SPOILER is this: Ultimately, Edward Norton (his character doesn't have a name) finds out that there is NO Tyler Durden. It's been him running Fight Club all the time. Tyler was a figment of his imagination. You almost have to watch it again to see all the obvious places were Tyler clearly isn't really there. Kind of like "The Sixth Sense".
That being said, this sounds like a different movie...but a good comparison.
And now I want to watch "Fight Club" again!

Hugh Jackman sets up Australian camp
Wednesday Aug 16 13:41 AEST
A year after launching his company Seed Productions in the United States, Hugh Jackman has opened a Sydney office.
Jackman, his wife Deborra-Lee Furness and business partner John Palermo plan to make up to five Australian films a year with a production budget of under $10 million for each project.
They've also been commissioned to produce a number of television productions and have plans to establish a theatre company in Sydney.
"Australia is where Deborra and Hugh are from, this is where their best friends live and a lot of the relationships they closely maintain," Palermo said.
http://direct.ninemsn.com.au/scripts/accipiter/nserver/SITE=NEWS/AREA=ENTERTAINMENT/SUBSECTION=/LOC=TOP/AAMSZ=MEDIUM/NOJAVASCRIPT=TRUE (http://direct.ninemsn.com.au/scripts/accipiter/adclick/SITE=NEWS/AREA=ENTERTAINMENT/SUBSECTION=/LOC=TOP/AAMSZ=MEDIUM)"Our goal is to make four to five films a year under $10 million. It is ambitious but you have got to set your goals high, you have got to aim for something."
Seed's Australian operations are based at Sydney's Fox Studios with the first locally-developed film project to be a love story epic directed by Stuart Beattie.
Another film, to be directed by Nadia Tass, will star Furness in the title role and will be shot early next year.
"We are committed to putting back into the industry here, to create work, build bridges and develop synergies between Australia and the US," Furness said.
Seed - a name which Palmero said comes from the notion that "everything comes from a seed, every little idea" - will also have a specialist artists' management division, representing filmmakers, actors and writers locally and overseas.
"Our aim is to support Australian filmmakers, to stimulate the creative community and provide international opportunities for Australian artists," Jackman said.
For television production, Seed has signed an exclusive output deal with pay TV provider Foxtel.
A documentary series based on the forthcoming Ashes cricket tour will be hosted by Jackman, while Furness will host a 26-part profile series, called The Directors, featuring interviews with well-known Australian filmmakers.
Seed's head office will remain on the 20th Century Fox lot in Los Angeles, where the company has development deals with Fox, Disney, Universal and CBS.
Hollywood films slated to be produced by Seed include The Tourist, starring Jackman and Ewan McGregor.
The company has also announced pre-production for Fedex, If You Could See Me Now, Drive, Rebound Boy, Carousel and Wolverine.

Jackman's Germ of a Movie Idea

August 16, 2006 - 10:08AM
Mad Max couldn't pull it off, but that won't stop Wolverine from trying.
Australian actor Hugh Jackman, his wife Deborra-lee Furness, and business partner John Palermo are trying where Mel Gibson's Icon productions in partnership with Fox failed - to create Australian films for the international market.
Seed launched its Australian wing last night at the Rocks in Sydney, with players from the Australian film industry including director Baz Luhrmann, filmmaker Nash Edgerton, his brother, actor Joel Edgerton, and Jackman, who played Wolverine in the X-Men films, in attendance.
The production and management company will be based in Fox Studios, where Fox Icon folded in 1998. Seed plans to produce 4 to 5 local films a year each for less than $10 million.
Palermo, a production partner in the Seed venture, said he expected the company's local arm to create movies the elements of which were 90 percent Australian.
"There's these young writers who have these great stories to tell, they send their stuff to the film bodies and don't hear back for nine months and become discouraged," Palermo said yesterday. "Then they go back to work as in the lumber yard, instead of writing. We want to nurture Australian filmmakers and help them grow."
Seed isn't interested in making films alone. The company plans to make stage productions - they have an interest in The Boy From Oz arena show in which Jackman stars - as well as television - Seed has struck a deal with Foxtel in Australia. Palermo said the company would like to create a theatre company with a theatre to seat up to 300 people, and suggested Bondi Pavilion at the Eastern suburbs beach as a possible venue.
So far on the company's film production slate are two Australian films, Schooner, an epic love story set in the desert which is the directorial debut of Australian Stuart Beattie, who penned Collateral, and The Tourist, starring Jackman as an Australian tourist in New York. The company are hoping to get Abbie Cornish to co-star in the latter. Seed is also trying to acquire the film rights to Kate Grenville's novel, The Secret River, while the American arm of Seed are developing films such as Wolverine with 20th Century Fox.

WHEN Hugh Jackman's microphone died on the opening night of The Boy From Oz in Sydney early this month, he might have wondered why he strayed from movie set to stage. For a few tense minutes the producers of this $10 million musical extravaganza might also have had their regrets or, at the least, a death wish for the head sound operator. But showbusiness is an unpredictable mistress with a short memory and by the end of the night Jackman and the producers had filed away the glitch to soak up the adulation.
Jackman arrived at the post-show party after swapping his dazzling gold lame trousers and leopard print shirt for a sombre blue suit obviously elated – he'd finally brought The Boy From Oz home after his Tony Award-winning season in 2004.
Performing in front of 15,000 people, he said, was the biggest buzz he had had in his career.
No one mentioned the dud mike to Jackman but everyone had privately remarked on how well he had dealt with the crisis, averting disaster by flicking his most acidic Peter Allen smile at the audience and remarking: "I'm talking to myself up here."
It was a small glitch in a virtuoso performance that ended in a standing ovation and confirmed that this guy is disgustingly talented.
So the question has to be asked of The Boy From Oz's co-producer Ben Gannon and the man who put Jackman in the Peter Allen role: is there anything this boy wonder from Down Under can't do?
Gannon, a movie, television and musical producer for the past 30 years, didn't hesitate when he answered: "Hugh Jackman is unique. There is nobody like him in showbusiness today.
"I know because I spend most of my time in London and New York these days and there is nobody in the world of musical theatre who is in more demand than Hugh Jackman.
"People would take their arm off to get him in a musical. I don't think Australians realise how big he is – Arthur Laurents said his Broadway appearance in The Boy From Oz was the greatest debut since Barbra Streisand's Funny Girl. That's how people see him in the US. He's big."
Kenny Ortega, the Emmy Award-winning American choreographer brought in to help Jackman and the 40 dancers make the right moves in the arena version of The Boy From Oz, isn't easily impressed.
He's worked with all the big stars in the US including Streisand, Madonna, Kiss and Michael Jackson.
Jackman, he says, is a "stupendous talent". "I had never seen him on stage before so when I went to see him do The Boy From Oz in New York I was bowled over," Ortega says. "Like everyone else I came back from intermission wanting more. It was a powerhouse performance I had not seen on Broadway for a long time." Indeed, producers Fox and Gannon believe Jackman is such a big star he is irreplaceable.
The Boy From Oz is already locked into 32 shows around Australia – nine in Brisbane alone – and Jackman is to feature in every one. There is no understudy.
If Jackman gets sick or injured the best-case scenario will be to reschedule performances. The worst-case scenario doesn't bear thinking about. It's a big gamble for Gannon and Fox who have to make $24 million to break even, with the show costing $14 million to move around Australia. But they have faith in their lead.
"Hugh demonstrated his incredible stamina in New York when he did eight performances a week for 50 weeks," Gannon says. "He never missed a show. He's doing only six a week here."
Even so, Jackman has had to take up a gruelling fitness routine to get him in shape for the show which puts big demands on him, thrusting him into the limelight for 13 of the 22 songs in the musical which charts Allen's amazing transformation from country kid to singing superstar.
When Jackman came to Australia in February for the press launch of The Boy From Oz, he was still carrying extra weight from beefing up for X Men: The Last Stand. Exercise and diet – Jackman said he lived like a monk doing the New York show – have turned him into a sleek performing machine who can high-kick with the Rockettes and jump on to oversized bongo drums in the over-the-top I Go To Rio. To some, it's a wonder he can even be bothered – after all in Hollywood, it's movies that matter, not musicals, even if they have won you a Tony Award on Broadway.
Jackman's movie career is white hot and he looks like becoming an even bigger star than songwriter/performer Peter Allen, who was still entertaining fans up to his death in 1992 when he was forced to cut short a concert tour of Australia.
As yet, Jackman is to show any signs of songwriting excellence but his good looks and talent as an actor and musical performer have guaranteed him a very busy next decade.
After The Boy From Oz he goes into rehearsal for Baz Luhrmann's period epic opposite Nicole Kidman. Later this year he will be seen in The Fountain with Rachel Weisz and then in Woody Allen's Scoop with Scarlett Johansson.
He has seven other movie projects scheduled until the end of 2007 and this doesn't include his reported casting in a film version of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical Carousel.
It's heartening for any hopeful actors that nine years ago Jackman was just another face in the crowd, having done the TV series Correlli with the ABC and ventured into presentation work with a fashion show he co-hosted with journalist Melissa Hoyer in 1997 on Foxtel.
Now that he has some acting muscle behind him, he is not content to be a pretty face.
He is looking to broaden his role in movies, also setting up a mini-studio based at Fox Studios in Sydney, Seed Productions, with production partner John Palermo. He hopes to do business with Disney to develop musicals including a contemporary film musical.
But why give up the relative safety of the movie set – where no one sees your technical stuff-ups – for the drama of the stage? Jackman, 37, who could easily earn more in one film than he could doing two months of The Boy From Oz, doesn't see a problem. In fact, if he had it his way he would be doing more musicals.
"I'd love to do Pal Joey on stage," he says. "That would be great. I just feel as an actor I need to do both movies and theatre. Being on stage sharpens you as an actor. It reconnects you as an actor. It is hard work but it is a necessity."
The Boy From Oz also holds a special place in Jackman's heart because, for him, it was the one that almost got away.
He first saw the musical when it was originally staged in 1998 starring Todd McKenney in the lead role. He had been invited to audition but turned it down because he felt he was doing too much musical theatre, having just done Sunset Boulevard.
The production turned out to be the most successful Australian musical yet, winning accolades for McKenney and a cast that included Chrissie Amphlett and Angela Toohey who have both returned to their roles for the arena production. Gannon says when he first wanted to take The Boy From Oz to the US he thought he could simply import the original cast. But US producers were not interested.
For four years he and Fox banged on doors that remained firmly shut. Until Jackman signed on. By then he had made an impression in X-Men as Wolverine and played to packed houses in the musical Oklahoma.
Jackman's decision to take up his maracas shocked those who thought he should focus on movies. "A lot of people said to me not to do it," Jackman says. "Even my wife (Deborra-lee Furness) thought I would say no.
"Conventional wisdom said it was not a great idea. As it turned out it was the best thing I could have done for my career. Woody Allen saw me in The Boy From Oz and offered me a role, so did Darren Aronofsky who did The Fountain. Steven Spielberg saw me and said we have to do something. It put me in a good position."
Jackman, with his dark good looks, doesn't immediately strike you as being a perfect fit for Allen, who was famously extravagant in all things – clothing and his partying. Jackman, well known for his strong family life with Furness and their two children, looks positively angelic in comparison.
It was Jackman's commitment to the project that brought The Boy From Oz back to Australia, the country that Allen loved but was also home to memories of a painful childhood overshadowed by a suicidal father.
"I wanted this show to be a celebration of Peter's life," says Jackman.
When The Boy From Oz closes in Sydney in mid-September he will have been associated with the show for more than three years. For co-producer Gannon it has played a large part in the past 10 years of his life. Neither seems keen to let it go.
Now they have brought it home they want to take it back to the world.
"Hugh has been talking about wanting to do a big version of the show in the big cities in America such as Washington and Chicago," he says. "I think it would work – Hugh is such a big star there."
The Boy From Oz, Brisbane Entertainment Centre, September 1-10.
Same but Different
THE original The Boy From Oz in 1998 was the most successful musical in Australian stage history.
It made a mint for producers Robert Fox and Ben Gannon and jump-started musical theatre which is now going through a revival.
So how different from the original is this revved-up arena version? In a word: very.
For starters, megastar Hugh Jackman is in the driving seat as Allen, and not Todd McKenney. This gives the arena version instant star power as McKenney was not that well known when he put on his sequinned shirt for the original. McKenney was wonderful as Allen and you can't say that Jackman is better.
He's brilliant but he is just different.
Also, remember this is an arena version so everything is bigger, brighter and more exaggerated.
It is a $10 million musical with a budget at least twice the original. The original book, or script, written by the late Nick Enright has been re-opened and trimmed back with certain scenes put into sharper focus. The roles of Judy Garland (Chrissie Amphlett) and Liza Minnelli (Angela Toohey) still play a central role and dominate the first half.
Colleen Hewett's role as Peter's mum doesn't seem to have as much impact until very late in the second half when she sings Don't Cry Out Loud, which is a showstopper. There is more of a rock concert feel to this production with sexy costumes and three big screens, one on either side of the stage and a central screen to highlight key scenes.
There is also more freedom for Jackman to stretch the role, veering from the script to comment on contemporary issues and interact with the audience.
All the favourites are still there including I Still Call Australia Home (featuring a neat flag trick that involves the audience), Don't Wish Too Hard, Quiet Please, There's a Lady on Stage and I Go to Rio. Tenterfield Saddler is back, having been taken out of the Broadway version, and instead of closing on the euphoric Rio, which was the case in the original show, Jackman finishes with an emotive rendition of Once Before I Go, which Allen wrote for actress Ann-Margret.
As for how the show shapes up beside the 2004 Broadway version for which Jackman won his Tony, the arena version is nowhere near as dark. On Broadway the emphasis was skewed towards Allen's American experiences, his rakish Studio 54 days and his gay relationships. This show is more of a celebration with a star-spangled Jackman firmly in the spotlight.

Ooooo, Fountain goodies!!!!! WOOT!!!!!!!! Notice the tear coming out of Rachel's eye in the last picture? I'll never forget this quote from someone who has seen the movie - I bet those stills (captured from the trailer) are from this scene:
At about the half way point, just after Weisz finds out she is dying she and Jackman share a love scene in a bathtub that is probably the best filmed sex scene I've seen this decade. We see absolutely no flesh, but it still manages to be fittingly erotic and meaningful because the characters are obviously in love and it isn't the average movie random sex; it’s the culmination of their relationship on screen and the centerpiece of the modern storyline. http://www.freezedriedmovies.com/review.php?id=193

I don't think that scene was mentioned, but this was:
The revelation is Jackman. We knew he was charismatic. We knew he could sing and dance. I, for one, didn’t know that he could be completely emotionally naked, flaying himself on screen down to his own bare essence. The scenes he plays as the conquistador are good. The scenes he plays in the modern day are affecting and moving. But it’s the scenes that he plays in the future that are brilliant. He’s sitting alone, bald, in a bubble with a tree amidst the vastness of intergalactic space, and yet he makes these scenes my favorite in the movie. In the bubble he’s a madman, a lost soul, a Buddha, all at once. Hugh Jackman has delivered a performance that demands an Academy Award nomination.
And in announcing he's doing a movie musical of Carousel:
http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=12332
Fox would do kind to lock up any deal with Jackman they can get before his price goes through the roof after the Best Actor nomination (and likely win) for THE FOUNTAIN. Yeah I said it. He's that good.
Hugh isn't on a lot of the "Oscar prediction" sites yet since this has only been screened for a few journalists and those that have seen are embargoed from doing a report (except I guess for Chud). My guess is once it goes to the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals we'll hear more about it. Venice is first and starts on Aug. 31 and it's premiering in Toronto on Sept. 12 so we should hear more in less than a month.

Jackman happy to be second choice

London - Actor Hugh Jackman is happy to take on movie roles that other actors have turned down, even though he knows he was not the first choice.
According to contactmusic.com, Jackman’s latest movie ‘The Fountain’ was supposed to star Brad Pitt and he got another role only when Russell Crowe dropped out.
Dougray Scott was supposed to play Wolverine in ‘X-Men’ but Jackman got the role when Scott had to film ‘Mission: Impossible 2′.
He says: ‘I never cared about that. I know enough about the business to know that by the time a movie comes to me, there have been at least five or six other names before me. When I started, there were probably 30 other names before me. But you don’t have to be the first-round draft pick to feel you deserve the role!’

That quote was picked up from the Premiere Magazine interview. It's really amazing how many actors are not first choice for movies they usually appear in. Hugh was supposed to be George Reeves in "Hollywoodland" but when it got delayed, Ben Affleck now has the part. And he was supposed to appear in "Pride & Glory" (2007) with Mark Wahlberg but then 9/11 happened and now it's Colin Ferrell and Edward Norton.

Emmies huh? What is he nominated for? I'd like to know too.
He's nominated for hosting the 2005 Tony Awards - he won an Emmy last year for hosting the 2004 Tonys. He was filming X3 when the awards were given out (Halle was also nominated for something, so they were both at the show last year). I don't think Hugh will make it this year (the show is Sunday) since he's doing his arena tour.

Down Under's Boy Wonder

WOWING audiences ... Hugh Jackman in the latest performance of The Boy from Oz. Picture: Jeff Darmanin
Same, but different

There's almost no chance of Hugh at Toronto. He has shows in Australia on 10th and 14th September. On paper, he could hop onto a private jet after one show, attend the Toronto screening and then hop straight back on that jet and arrive in time for the next, but there is hardly any contingency and he'd still have to face 6 shows in 4 days at the end of it.

SHAVED HEAD BRINGS BAD MEMORIES FOR JACKMAN
HUGH JACKMAN's drastic haircut for new movie THE FOUNTAIN left him terrified his odd-shaped head would attract a barrage of abuse. The X-MEN star was mercilessly teased at school for being a "Pea Head" and worried his shaved locks would start the bullying again. He tells Premiere magazine, "I used to be called Pea Head at school. The moment I saw myself, I started laughing hysterically. "All I could see were my mates going, 'Pea Head! Pea Head!' "I'd always dreamed of shaving it, because I love swimming, and with my head shaved, it was the most exquisite feeling." The VAN HELSING star insists that he had no pangs of vanity before taking the drastic step adding, "I like experimenting. I also had to shave my legs, chest, and arms. "After the first couple of days, it became a real pain: wrists, underarms, everything."

I wasn't complaining about you. It's just that contactmusic never has anything original - they take quotes from magazines and tv interviews and wrap them up in sensationalist headlines and "editorial". Then the same, distorted story gets copied by 20 other websites.
I've found the trick with contactmusic is to read the direct quotes but ignore the rest. If you can work out the source, then read that because it will be in context.

The hottest act in town
REBEKAH DEVLIN
August 24, 2006 12:15am
Article from: The Advertiser
THERE was not a maraca or sequin in sight. Hollywood megastar Hugh Jackman slipped quietly into town last night - well, until he got to the baggage carousel anyway.
The star of the X-Men films was promptly swamped for autographs and photos by fans, and he obliged them all.
The 37-year-old is in Adelaide to perform his critically-acclaimed role as Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz, which opens tonight at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre.
Remarkably, it's the first time he's worked here, so he believes. "I think it is," he said, "I can't remember."
A devoted family man, Jackman's wife Deborra-Lee Furness and children Oscar, 6, and Ava, 1, did not make the journey.
So with three standing ovations at the Sydney premiere, does it ever get to the point of being embarrassing? "No," Jackman chuckled. "You don't take any of them for granted, it's a beautiful thing people do.
"So far people have been really enjoying it. And I'm having a ball, too."
Last week in Melbourne, though, he got a little too into I Go to Rio and a maraca went flying into the crowd.
"It just missed a guy in the front row," he recalled, "I wondered if it was like at the footy and it would disappear, but the guy didn't seem that interested in my maraca."
When asked how his maracas were, he shot back with a grin: "Well rested, they've had a few days off."
At times in the performance, he heads into the crowd, which can be an interesting experience.
"I've never been so groped in all my life," he said.
Tickets are still available for the show's run, which finishes on Sunday.

If it's the picture I think it is (I'm getting "page not displayed"), it was shown at a gallery in New York. Here's the story on it (and I still don't believe Hugh when he said they didn't ask him to host the Tony's - I think he just said that so whoever did host didn't feel like second choice. And BTW - NOBODY hosted the Tony's this year - sure, they didn't ask him! Although his dad's 70th birthday thing is true).

Hugh Jackman Passes On the Tonys (http://www.superherohype.com/forums/)
Hugh Jackman will not be hosting this year’s Tony Awards. But he did show up last night to see his portrait taken by his “X-Men: The Last Stand” director Brett Ratner.
Ratner’s black and white photographs, very Avedon-ish and completely arresting, were shown in A makeshift gallery put together by Extell Real Estate in the lobby of their newest building on West 18 St.
Extell’s Gary Barnett looked slightly shocked as Jackman, Kelsey Grammer (with wife Camille), Ann Dexter Jones, Russell and Kimora Simmons (reunited for the occasion), "X-Man" James Marsden, plus Barry Diller, Ron Burkle, model-filmmaker Irina Pantaeva and husband Roland Levin, Sony CFO Rob Wiesenthal, New Line Cinema’s Michael Lynne and Steve Abramson worked their way through the 600 or so fans who came to help Ratner launch his stellar exhibition.
Of course, everyone waited patiently for Mariah Carey to come down and inspect her portrait —maybe the best picture ever taken of her — but the singer got stuck at an event hosted by Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King.
She sent her regrets, then headed to Nobu 57 for a late dinner with L.A. Antonio Reid, the head of her record company.
Ratner took his gang to Mr. Chow, at the opposite end of 57 St., where infamous art dealer Tony Shafrazi was finishing up his own dinner party.
But I did ask Jackman at the show what happened with him and the Tonys.
“They didn’t ask me,” he said. “But I couldn’t do it anyway. It’s my dad’s 70 birthday and we’re going to Australia to be with him.”
Jackman told me that he thinks the new “X-Men” movie is probably the best in the trilogy.
“Even though I really liked the second one,” he said. “Brett did an amazing job.”

Tackle-shy Cornes
August 25, 2006 12:15am
NOW we know why footballers tend to shy away from the arts. Port midfielder Kane Cornes was dragged on stage last night at the Boy From Oz premiere at the Entertainment Centre.
Hugh Jackman, wearing a Crows guernsey and camping it up, asked a very embarrassed Cornes to "tackle me".
The sexual innuendos continued throughout the night as Jackman played up to the late Peter Allen's bent for cheeky entertainment.

I've read so many stories about celebrities being called out from the audience or to go onstage (Richard Roxburgh, Barbara Walters, Matt Damon to name a few), but the four times I went, although Hugh was great at ad-libbing, he just picked on regular people, and I only remember two of them!

All I have to say is The Fountain better live up to all the hype! Another screening review - no spoilers.
http://www.canmag.com/news/4/3/4877
Chalk up another positive review for the Darren Aronofsky film, The Fountain. Though Warner Bros has pushed the film back -- something that may instill doubt -- the early reviews continue to be very positive.
Got an email in my box today from 'Gill' who not only loved the film but is crazy stoked on the performances from both Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman. What does 'crazy stoked' mean? Well, take a look at the review below.
My friend and I were invited to a screening up here in San Diego of the new Darren Aronofsky film “The Fountain” last night. There was someone giving out tickets up at one of the local malls and my friend was able to get a pair of them when she was shopping with her mom. Being a film geek myself, I was ecstatic about seeing this film and hope it lived up to expectations and I’m proud to say that it did and more. Both Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz were excellent in this film and they both deserve to be nominated for Oscars when the time comes for their beautiful performances. Hugh gives such a brave performance in his roles and he makes you feel just as desperate as he is to save his soul mate and Rachel Weisz is a true revelation as that soul mate, she’s such a strong and gifted actress with such range and guts. Both of them give probably their best performances ever in this film with such grace and passion that you end up feeling every emotion they go though.
The story is very intriguing with the concept of life after death and the notion of reincarnation and unlike a few movies I can mention, it all fits within the context of the story being told. I will not give a way any spoilers but I will say that you have to pay close attention to the story with Weisz and Jackman’s characters in the present because something happens there that makes the ending a lot more clearer to understand.
I loved this film and I will be seeing it again when it officially comes out this November.

While Hugh was great at the 2005 Tonys, I truthfully didn't think he would win - he wasn't onstage as much as in 2004 when he did win (rumor has it that he was rehearsing his number with Aretha Franklin backstage since she didn't show up for dress rehearsal).
Anyway, ALL of Hugh's Tony moments are online - and of course I recommend them all (especially "One Night Only" from the 2004 Tonys). The clip that you saw on the Emmys was the medley that he did - it's #2 under 2005 - all others are here also. The duet with Aretha is # 8 - "Somewhere". From the 2004 Tonys I recommend # 1 One Night Only, # 7 Not the Boy Next Door (as Peter Allen, where he dragged Sarah Jessica Parker out of the audience and made her dance with him), and # 10 - his Tony Award acceptance speech.

Arriving in Brisbane - two cute pictures with the family.
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,20288521-953,00.html
Show goes on for Hugh
SHOWBUSINESS dynamo Hugh Jackman stepped off a plane in Brisbane yesterday to hear the bad news – legendary crooner Barry Manilow had beaten him to an Emmy Award.
So how did he feel about being pipped at the post by a bloke whose music is used to disperse thugs from shopping centres?
"It's great," grinned Jackman.
"It's fantastic."
Jackman, in Brisbane to perform eight shows of The Boy From Oz arena spectacular before more than 80,000 people, can afford to be magnanimous as he has five films out in the next six months. He recently signed on to star in a remake of Carousel, as well as the $120 million new Baz Luhrmann film. And he is now a producer with his own production company, Seed.
Who needs another Emmy (he already has one after winning last year for hosting the 2004 Tony Awards).
Jackman, 37, was in family mode before the start of his Brisbane Entertainment Centre concerts. Having thrilled thousands of fans as The Boy From Oz, he was playing Dad yesterday. He is Australia's biggest male star of the moment, yet Jackman travelled without minders.
He also dutifully collected his own luggage and hauled it into an awaiting trailer while his wife, fellow actor Deborra-lee Furness, put their two children, Oscar, 6, and Ava, 13 months, into a black BMW. They then headed off to a hotel in the city while the rest of the cast went to Byron Bay.
Jackman looked tired but relaxed, having already done 23 performances of The Boy From Oz. "I'm trying not to count how many shows I've done," he said.
"I will start crying because it makes me sad. I don't want it to finish. I am having a ball."
The $20 million arena spectacular, about the brilliant career and tangled love life of performer Peter Allen, will keep Jackman busy until the end of the month. Producer Ben Gannon had suggested the $24 million musical could go on to the US for a tour of major cities.
Jackman said he was busy next year however he added: "We will wait and see. It is all on the table. I am busy next year but hopefully I will be around for longer and be performing for a while. I have a production company and we have films coming up but they are development and that can be a 10-year process. Like I did with this show, when I decided to go in after New York I will make up my mind at the end."
During his Brisbane season Jackman may also assume the unlikely role of political commentator. In his previous shows he has broken from the script to comment on current events.
"There will be room for something like that on the election," he said. "I will be reading up on local affairs that's for sure. I am open for anything."
The show opens on September 1.

Men's Vogue review of The Fountain:
http://www.mensvogue.com/arts/movies/articles/2006/08/21/last_king_of_scotland_and_the_fountain?currentPage =2
The need to heal someone is also part of Darren Aronofsky's latest, and as ever the director unspools something cool—at least, that is, to look at. He has already turned higher math into a thriller (Pi) and junkie hankerings into a carnal romance (Requiem for a Dream). But science fiction might seem too expected a new direction. Directors, whoever they are—Soderbergh and Spielberg, Linklater and Woo—always seem to embark on intergalactic flights of fancy when this world is not enough.
Aronofsky, however, would never just take another Philip K. Dick paperback off the shelf. The Fountain is a mood piece unlike any other sci-fi fantasy; here, instead of titanium and Kevlar, the principal surfaces are human skin, tree bark—and hair. Aronofsky's trippy triptych involving three pairs of lovers, played by Hugh Jackman and the luminous and fragile Rachel Weisz, comes—more or less—together: The central plot is set in the present, as Tommy, a research scientist, vivisects monkeys in a race to discover a cure that will save his wife, a writer named Izzi, from a mortal disease. Another, which spills out of Izzi's novel-in-progress, follows the quest of a conquistador, sent by his beloved Queen Isabel to scour new-world pyramids in search of a mythic tree of life. The third strand weaves the two together, in a distant future, where a lotus-posing Jackman, replete with tattoos and a bald head, awaits enlightenment in a Mayan version of purgatory.
The film becomes a showcase for Aronofsky's artful transformation of Hugh Jackman, in the same way that Jennifer Connelly's tearful performance in Requiem unveiled an impressive new range. In each, Jackman writhes in pain as his character explores the outer limits of his known world, but his actorly masterwork pushes him into a new league—along with Oscar-winner Weisz —and finally allows him to shave off the muttonchops and comic-book stigma of Wolverine.
When entering The Fountain, prepare thyself for the highest of concepts. There are the requisite sword fights and green-screen transmutations, and there's a bathtub sex scene that will create quite a splash. But Aronofsky revels in making the mundane otherworldly, taking 90 minutes of film as far as the genre can go. Meanwhile, his camera falls so thoroughly in love with Weisz that he, of course, married her.— NED MARTEL

I don't like the "comic-book stigma" comment but it's a reminder that a lot of people look down on this kind of film. There isn't a lot of scope for actors to show their range whilst wearing strange wigs and delivering one-liners.

Unfortunately you are correct. A lot of people know Hugh as just Wolverine without regard to his theater work or anything else. He's finally doing a lot more diverse movies so hopefully that image will change, especially if The Fountain gets him a lot of attention and from all indications, it sounds like it will.

I don't think it's so much a knock on comic books...I think a lot of critics are liking that he's finally taking a lead dramatic role and so everyone can finally see how good of an actor he is.
Even Darren Aronofsky said he hadn't considered him to replace Brad Pitt because he'd only known him was Wolverine. It was the Broadway show that convinced him he was talented enough for the part.
I'm just loving the snotty NY Post columnist who hated "The Boy From Oz" when it was on Broadway, ripped it every opportunity it could, and who declared that Hugh had killed his movie career...between the show and 'Van Helsing' underperforming at the box office.
He's not saying that anymore. ;)

Ah yes, Michael Reidel, the critic everyone loves to hate! I still say Van Helsing did okay since it opened to $51 million - but having said that maybe it's a blessing in disguise - Hugh doesn't have to do a sequel so it's on to bigger and better things!

He didn't, really...he was so mad all year when that show didn't close they way he proclaimed it would after the reviews came out. Even when he finally relented that the show was a hit on it's closing weekend, he still referred to it as "garbage."
The man thrives on failure, and that goes with any show. He's the first one to pounce at backstage trauma or a lag in ticket sales. Otherwise, he'd just be a theater reporter and no one would care about what he had to say.
What's that saying? Those who can, do....those who can't, write for the NY Post. ;)

I know some are going to cringe when they see Brett Ratner's name in here but this is actually about producer Robert Evans (I remember when he was married to Ali McGraw) and sounds like it could be an interesting movie. Take note of the last paragraph. Brett must have really loved working with Hugh (only significant paragraphs posted)
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/03/movies/0...amp;oref=slogin (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/03/movies/03john.html?_r=1&ref=movies&oref=slogin)
A significant preoccupation of late has been “The Fat Lady Sang,” a second memoir that he says he has submitted, unsuccessfully, to three publishers in the last several years. The latest version of the manuscript is chock full of bedside scenes of him lying near death after his stroke in 1998 and being comforted by Mr. Redstone, who Mr. Evans says was one of three key participants in his rehabilitation.
The others who were vital to his recovery were Graydon Carter, the editor of Vanity Fair, who was also a producer of the “The Kid Stays in the Picture,” and Brett Ratner, a film director half Mr. Evans’s age who is a frequent visitor to his home.
******
While “The Kid” chronicled how Mr. Evans made his bones by backing young writers like Robert Towne and directors like Francis Ford Coppola, Roman Polanski and Hal Ashby, “Fat Lady” laments his forced pairing with the director William Friedkin , a movie veteran, on the box-office bomb “Jade” in 1995. But Mr. Evans also goes to great lengths to describe his friendship with and admiration for Mr. Ratner, a well-known figure on the industry party circuit who’s had mixed success since he hit the radar with “Money Talks” and the “Rush Hour” series almost 10 years ago.
Mr. Ratner returned Mr. Evans’s flattery in a phone interview last week. “ ‘The Fat Lady Sang’ will be made into a film with me directing,” Mr. Ratner said. “I want either Johnny Depp or Hugh Jackman to play Bob, who I consider not only one of the greatest producers of our time, but one of the greatest philosophers. ‘The Fat Lady Sang’ will be my Oscar picture.”

Heads-up for Hugh fans - next week may be a big news week - The Fountain screens on Monday at the Venice Film Festival so we'll be getting reviews from that, and Moriarty from AICN posted something in his DVD reviews saying he's writing a review of it, so it sounds like the embargo is coming off.
Plus, MovieWeb and a bunch of other websites spoke to The Prestige director Chris Nolan, and MovieWeb said to look for their report "right after Labor Day."

I ditched Mama the moment I saw a hottie lingering in the corner. I wasn't gonna pass up a brief encounter with James Marsden! I have this thing I do when I meet famous people — to prove I'm actually a fan, I bring up their most obscure credit. Jimmy said that being cast in the film version of the musical Hairspray will surprise fans who don't know he can sing. I told him this was no surprise to me — I've been a fan since his short-lived series Second Noah (circa 1996), in which he regularly sang and played the guitar. He was shocked I remembered that, but laughed when I explained, "Well, most of the time you were singing, you were shirtless — that might be why it stuck in my head!" Hairspray director Adam Shankman tried to make me jealous by saying that because they just flew in for the opening, he and Jimmy both had to change in a bathroom at the airport — that lucky *****! When I asked Marsden about his ambitions, he said, "I always wanted to be in movies. I didn't care if I was a star or not — as long as the roles were interesting. For better or for worse, I'm having the career I dreamt of." But that doesn't mean he's complacent — his new dream is to do a musical with his X-Men co-star Hugh Jackman. "I'd do anything for that man," he confided in me. Ditto!

HUGH Jackman hit the Brisbane stage last night wearing a sequinned suit and a surprise addition – a Broncos jersey.
"Wayne Bennett sent me this," Jackman told a crowd of more than 10,000 people on opening night for The Boy From Oz at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. "I told him, I know you've had a couple of wins lately but Shane Webcke is leaving and you might need someone."
Jackman, who portrays song and dance man Peter Allen in the $10 million musical, then turned his back to the audience to show the name "Allen" in sequins on the back.
He then stepped into the crowd where he told several Broncos players, including Brent Tate, that he would like to join them at training.
The costume was lapped up by an enthusiastic audience, who were in Jackman's hands from the moment he descended on a white piano to the stage singing I Am Not the Boy Next Door.
The Boy From Oz will be seen by more than 90,000 people at the BEC in the next two weeks. The in-demand Jackman will perform nine Brisbane shows; but before going on stage yesterday he admitted what most of us suspect – rearing children is harder than going to work, even if you are a megastar.
"The biggest revolution in my life has been having two children," the 37-year-old said. "We have just been on holiday for 3˝ days and I think it is a lot easier going back to work."
He, actor wife Deborra-lee Furness, and children Oscar, 6, and Ava, 13 months, spent last week at Byron Bay.
"We enjoyed four days of torrential rain. I know you guys need the rain so I am not complaining," he said.
Jackman said he would celebrate Father's Day with his family tomorrow with breakfast, possibly followed by an afternoon out at Suncorp Stadium to watch the Brisbane Broncos rugby league team play the New Zealand Warriors.

"I sang I Still Call Australia Home in New York probably 400 times and every time it gave me a little tingle at the back of my neck ... but to do it here, it's kind of beyond words, the feeling I have,'' he said.
"It sort of brings me to tears every night ... it's one moment where all bets are off and the whole audience just goes 'I'm so proud to be an Australian'.
"I can honestly tell you I've never had more fun in my career and I wouldn't be surprised if it's never as good as this again.''
He said it would be hard to hang up the maracas but he would not miss any of the costumes when the project finally ended.

The 3rd time I saw "The Boy From Oz," there was a couple from Australia sitting next to us. It was their first trip to NY, and this was their first Broadway show. In fact, the husband was a real estate agent, and he sold the house were Peter Allen's grandfather lived. They loved the show, and they were absolutely beaming during that song. :)

Both Jackman and Weisz are tested here as performers, asked to do things they’ve never done before. Jackman in particular shows us a range in his work that is revelatory. I honestly think this guy can play anything after seeing how he handles the tricky shifts of tone and attitude, and the way he throws his entire physical identity into the role. It’s completely egoless work. This isn’t a typical movie star performance. He doesn’t seem concerned with being “cool” in the film. Instead, even in the most outrageous moments of the film, he reaches for something grounded and real. I’m sure most of the conversations about this film will start with Jackman’s work.
It is a triumphant film, a film that has something on its mind and something in its heart, and a film that will exist and impress and inspire long after any silly awards season is over. Don’t get hung up on the little **** with this one. Don’t worry about awards or box-office in the short term. THE FOUNTAIN was built to last, and all that time it took to get here was worth the wait. Aronofsky has earned the right to go anywhere from here, and I for one will follow.
You know what this means? More reviews will be coming very, very soon...

'THE FOUNTAIN'
Weisz and Jackman attend press conference in Venice
09/05/2006
Film collaborations between real-life partners are not always happy affairs, but Rachel Weisz and Darren Aronofsky say it is 'so far, so good' after making "The Fountain" together.
'The Fountain' is Darren Aronofsky's long-awaited follow up to acclaimed 1999 feature 'Requiem for a dream.'
The romance is a fantasy. A mystical odyssey depicting modern-day scientist Tommy Creo (Hugh Jackman) as he embarks on a journey to find a cure for cancer and save his wife Isabel (Rachel Weisz) from dying.
With this theme, Aronofsky creates a character who is passionately motivated to seek the fountain of youth. Over a one thousand year time span, Jackman takes on three roles who are really the same man, with the same issues. As Tom, he is an astronaut who travels through space in the 26th century, as Tomas he is an explorer that goes back in time as a conquistador in Spain during the Inquisitions, and as a modern day scientist he is Tom, and experiments on animals with roots and barks taken from sacred places the world over-relentlessly trying to develop a cure for cancer on time to save his wife.
Tom's wife, Isabel is writing a book on the last days of her life which is called 'The Fountain' and she leaves the last chapter for her to husband to complete.
Tommy's is a highly romantic and mystical journey - a modern parable about life and death, of letting go and acceptance. At its core, the fountain's love story is about losing someone and what that teaches you. Over one thousand years the central character races against time and ultimately must come to the conclusion that he can not control life, and he must learn acceptance and letting go.
Aronofsky's film looks like an installation art work, at times a mesmerising sequence of special effects that deftly draws on the mysteries of the ancient Mayans, the solar system or bark from a trees in South America (to name a few), this film weaves themes of hope and acceptance with loss, questioning, searching and ultimately, liberation.

I think the headline is wrong - Hugh wasn't at the press conference (unless he did it by satellite) - they may have meant Aronofsky.
I'm getting a lot of alerts saying The Fountain was "booed" at the film festival. Then there are people on the MB saying they were there and loved the movie and gave it a 10/10 and said there were also people that cheered but that part's not being reported. Aronofsky/Warners always said this would be a love it or hate it movie. All the stories also said that the ones who didn't like it "didn't get it." And "The Queen" starring Helen Mirren which is about the death of Princess Diana got a standing ovation. I guess audiences don't want to think. Variety and Hollywood Reporter didn't like it either - but the Variety reviewer in her first sentence said she didn't like Aronofsky in the first place and the HR reporter was basically making fun of it. It will be interesting to read how it's received at Deauville (9/7) and Toronto (9/12). It's amazing to me the two extremes this movie is getting, but I was expecting that. I remember reading reports from the first screening where one report called it a "masterpiece" and then someone else from the screening responded with "did we see the same movie?" and started to make fun of some of the parts of the movie.

I've been reading about it too, but also from what I've read it was a mixed reaction, with only a "loud few" resorting to booing. I know that happens at Cannes too--I believe it happened with "Marie Antoinette" this year. So I guess it's just normal for attendees at film festivals to act like 5-year-olds when they don't like something.
IMDB reported it on their front page today too--which is typical IMDB. They were condemning "Spiderman 3" last week.
Like Premeire Magazine said, it's going to controversial, because I think people are either going to think it's brilliant or it's awful. It's gotten enough fantastic reviews so far that I don't think it's anything to worry too much about. I'm only bummed it created some negative press already.
And here's something to smile about...JoBlo.com gives it 9.8 out of 10: http://www.joblo.com/reviews.php?mode=joblo_movies&id=1454

I hope to pick up tickets for the Toronto (9/12) showing tomorrow. There's a second showing in Toronto, by the way. I forget when, but it's within a few days of the first.

You MUST report back!
And to switch gears, here's some reports from the edit bay of The Prestige:
This one is four parts - it's interesting how Nolan says the exact same thing Aronofsky did about Hugh needing this part. (I think some of these reports might be the same but I haven't read them yet).

IESB: How about Hugh Jackman?
CN: Hugh came on board, I think before Christian actually, and I hadn’t worked with Hugh before, heard he was interested in the script and met with him and he just seemed to embody exactly this balance that we needed between having a sense of integrity, classic leading man, cinematic leading man, with this great affinitive sort of stage showmanship that the character has to have. Hugh’s character as opposed to Christian’s characters has a wonderful understanding of the interaction between performer and live audience. Hugh actually has that but he also has, I think, great depths as an actor that hadn’t really been explored, people haven’t had the chance to really see what he can do as an actor so this was a character that would let him do that, has let him to that.

Yes, please report back. Even if you agree with the negativity... I just want to hear some more opinions. Of course I will form my own by seeing this movie, regardless, but still...
Also, Darren himself stated, in an early intereview, that the film got better with each viewing. From the reports so far, I'm gathering what he meant was that it may take more than one viewing to fully understand the film... and that doesn't automatically mean it's "bad".
