Rachel Weisz's fiancé wanted her sex scene with Hugh Jackman in their new movie to be even steamier.

The Oscar-winning actress stars opposite Jackman in 'The Fountain', directed by her fiancé Darren Aronofsky.
Aronofsky admits he had no problem seeing his real-life lover locked in a steamy bathroom clinch with the hunky 'X-Men' actor.
He said: "I'm a pervert so I had no issue with it. I enjoy shooting sex scenes very much. She's an actress, he's an actor. It's mostly make believe, and when you shout cut it's over." Aronofsky was so determined to make the scene raunchier that he ordered Weisz to take off Jackman's trousers, however, the scene was eventually cut from the film.
Weisz insists she was okay with her fiancé watching her romp with another man.
She said: "I think it's wonderful that this film is so different. I would love to work with Darren again."

Aronofsky said if he left the scene in, it would have been pushing the "R" rating - I want to see that part of the scene!

05/09/2006

The director of Pi and Requiem for a Dream, Darren Aronofsky, will be attending the Sitges – International Film Festival of Catalonia on October 11th to present his latest work, The Fountain, in the Fantàstic Première Official Category.

Starring Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman, The Fountain is an intimist science fiction film where Aronofsky deals with a man’s odyssey spanning over three different periods in order to save the woman he loves.

The Première category, which proposes important, out-of-competition productions soon to be premiered, will also include other films:

Captivity, by Roland Joffé (The Mission, The Killing Fields), starring Elisha Cuthbert (“24”), with screenplay by Larry Cohen (It’s Alive, Q), can be seen in Sitges for the first time worldwide.

Unknown, by Simon Brand, will be presented as a European première.
Running Scared (to premiere in Spain with the title La prueba del crimen), directed by Wayne Kramer (The Cooler) and starring Paul Walker (2 Fast 2 Furious).

These films have been added to the previously announced Pulse, by Jim Sonzero; The Wicker Man, by Neil LaBute; A Scanner Darkly, by Richard Linklater and the Spanish The Kovak Box, by Daniel Monzón

^^ I just saw the preview in theatres, looks alright. Actually the one you all should look into is The Prestige...Chris Nolan directs, the same dude who did momento. Genius, it looks great. Not to mention Bale is also featured..
I've been following The Prestige for a little over a year now, anticipating its opening, only to find out this morning, from my friend, that it is in limited release! Hopfully he's wrong about that one, cause I was really looking forward to that movie.

This is one of those "you get it or you don't", you "love it or hate it" movies - it seems like there's no in-between. This is a movie that requires you to pay attention. It's been described as both "a masterpiece" and "utter drivel."

Check out these out which sort of sums it up - plus some of the good reviews - also check out the website posted in the first article.

A FOUNTAIN OF REACTION
09.13.06
By Devin Faraci (devin@chud.com)
Contributing sources: MovieFan (http://chud.com/)

The saga of Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain continues. When I walked out of my screening many months ago, I was elated – I had just seen a masterpiece. It didn’t even occur to me at the time that this film could divide audiences; what I had seen was so beautiful, so touching and so truthful I figured it was a movie that would just play well. Before seeing the movie I had heard concerns that it would be too complicated or too weird, but I found that simply paying attention allowed the film to open up for me – no special skills or knowledge were necessary, just a good old fashioned bit of focus.

And yet the film was booed at Venice. Now it was hissed at Toronto. In both cases, though, the film’s other screenings were met with rapturous applause. Some critics have blathered on about how the film is incomprehensible, while others, like Time’s Richard Schickel, who called it a “daring and impressive achievement,” have praised the film. Most of the people who like the film seem to really like the film. I know that I love it.

Schickel has an interesting theory, and it’s one that I find myself agreeing with: many of the critics were turned off to The Fountain because it’s an earnest movie. It takes itself and its themes very seriously, and it seriously examines things like mortality and love – not in the grim, nihilistic way of small indie films, but in a grandiose way. The Fountain wears love and grief on its sleeve, which some might dismiss out of hand. I think for many critics the narrative must be straightforward while the emotions should be oblique; The Fountain really reverses that. What’s really interesting is that the film seems to be playing well with real, paying audiences as opposed to the press corps.

Sadly you won’t have the chance to make up your mind until the end of November. In the meantime the official website for the film has been updated (http://thefountainmovie.warnerbros.com/) in a big way, and it looks like more features will be added as time goes on. And hey, look at who gets quoted on the front page of the thing.

http://www.popmatters.com/film/features/060913-2006-film-fall-preview-3.shtml

It's both the little within the big and the massive within the delicate that sits at the center of Darren Aronofsky's time traveling love story, The Fountain (22 Nov). Recently booed by those attending the Venice Film Festival (though the 'Net buzz has been nothing if not ecstatic) this long form labor of love by the Requiem for a Dream (2000) helmer wants to be a 2001 for the post-millennial age. Originally proposed as a starring vehicle for Brad Pitt, said star's eventually drop out stranded the project. Aronofsky redrafted the script to lower costs, managed to land the far more humane Hugh Jackman, and placed his Oscar winning fiancé, Rachel Weisz, in the role of the story's object of desire. In what could be a clear case of generational disconnect, critics familiar with past specious speculations like Zardoz seem to hate this confounding cosmic trip. But those born outside of Kubrick's serious perspective of the fiction of science have loved this look at passion playing out among the ages and the stars. It will either be a misunderstood masterpiece, or a full blown flop. In either case, it promises to be unlike anything we've seen in cinema in a very long time.

Time magazine:

THE FOUNTAIN
Darren Aronofsky's millennium-spaning fable was pummeled* with boos at both the critics' and the public screenings at last week's Venice Film Festival. Well, nothing is as easy to deride as old-fashioined, dead serious romance. Buton its own terms, this is an impressive and daring achievement, and Hugh Jackman is splendid as the scientist who will try to span space and time to prove that love is stronger than death.

http://www.twitchfilm.net/archives/007494.html

Back in the days of the first incarnation of Darren Aronofsky's The Fountain, back before Brad Pitt dropped out at the last minute forcing the film back into development hell, Aronofsky was known to muse aloud about his desire to create a new kind of science fiction film, metaphysical science fiction that would essentially create a new paradigm. Years later, the film arguably significantly better off with Hugh Jackman in the lead rather than Pitt, Aronofsky has accomplished exactly that.

Too smart by far for the multiplex The Fountain is almost certainly doomed to fail at the box office yet is is almost equally certain to be looked at five and ten years down the road as a watershed moment, a film like 2001 and Bladerunner that changed understandings of what the genre was capable of, a film that redefines the language of science fiction. Rich with dazzling imagery, elegaic in its bold embrace of large issues, built around a tragic romance and an effortless fusion of Mayan myth with Judeo-Christian faith, The Fountain is an out and out brilliant step forward from Aronofsky.

though the film plays strongly against easy summary it follows an intertwined three part story line that spans centuries. One segment takes place in the distant past, with Jackman as a conquistador in the time of the Spanish Inquisition, Rachel Weisz playing the Queen of Spain under assult by Inquisitors for her heretical belief that the Tree of Life has has been discovered in New Spain where it is guarded by Mayan priests. Seeing this as her possible salvation she sends her loyal conquistador to find the tree, promising to marry him if he succeeds. Another segment is set in the distant future, Jackman playing an astronaut fraught with grief at the death of his beloved transporting the Tree of Life, itself on the verge of death, to a distant nebula that the Mayans believed was the repository of dead souls awaiting reincarnation. Anchoring it all is the modern time segment, Jackman playing a research doctor struggling against time to find a cure for the brain cancer that threatens the life of his much loved wife, her death looming imminent, with the only possibility seeming to be a mysterious substance found in the bark of a rare South American tree.

Aronofsky fills his film with a lyrical beauty, a natural grace and rhythm that tracks the story using the emotional journey of his leads rather than the linear plot lines as his guide. He shifts easily and naturally between time lines, each time period informing and altering the others, the characters slowly learning to grapple with questions of life, death, love gained and soon to be lost. He is unafraid to address big issues, intelligent enough to offer meanigful solutions, and sensitive enough to ground the entire affair in the tragic emotional journey of his leads. This is positively masterful film making: challenging, rewarding, rich with images and ideas, demanding of repeat viewings and achored in a tangible emotional reality. It is film making on a much larger scale than Aronofsky has ever attempted in the past and the ease with which he navigates these challenging and diverse worlds says loudly that his potential has not yet even begun to be tapped.

While The Fountain is a visually arresting film, loaded with stunning images in all three time periods, it is the core relationship of Jackman and Weisz that makes the whole thing go, and on this level it is clear that Pitt's departure was a blessing in disguise. This film would have been radically different with Pitt and original co-star Cate Blanchett in the leads, very likely a more sterile one, and almost certainly one overshadowed by Pitt's large scale fame. While Jackman is a lesser star than Pitt on the vaunted celebrity scale that actually works to his advantage here, allowing him to slip more easily into the diverse roles required of him. It certainly doesn't hurt that Jackman is a far more expressive and diverse actor than he has often been given the chance to demonstrate. This could very well prove to be a breakout film for Jackman, allowing him to shed the Wolverine and beefcake roles and move into parts with significantly more substance. Weisz is likewise quite strong, but this film clearly rides on Jackman's shoulders and he is more than able to carry it.

Aronofsky has always been a divisive director, his films consistently drawing sharply opposed reactions and The Fountain is already continuing that tradition, having drawn boos - inexplicably, in my opinion - at Venice. But divisive or not Aronofsky just continues to cement his reputation as the next great American auteur, a man determined to take cinema places it has never been before with the ability, intelligence and boundless creativity required to do exactly that. This is a masterpiece.

TIFF: Matters of Life and Death
Three tales in "The Fountain": Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz.

There's nothing tepid about Darren Aronofsky, and I love him for it. "The Fountain," his grand mythical fantasy that interweaves three tales about the fear of death and the quest for eternal life, is a terrifically ambitious spectacle that Aronofsky commits to completely. I have no idea how critics and audiences are going to receive it (I never do), but it's exhilarating to see somebody go this far out on a limb for his vision.

Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz appear as versions of the same characters in all three narratives. Dr. Tommy Creo is research doctor studying brain tumors while his wife Izzy (or "Iz," as in "is") is dying of one; as Spanish conquistador Tomas Creo, serving Queen Isabella during the 16th century terror of the Inquisition, who is sent on a quest for the Tree of Life in a story called "The Fountain," written by Izzy; and as some kind of monk/space traveller hurling toward a nebula with the ancient tree in what looks like an interstellar snowglobe, haunted by the ghost of Izzy.

It could have been as silly as (again) "Lady in the Water," if Aronofsky had suffered the same kind of failure of nerve that afflicted M. Night Shyamalan. But never fear. As you might expect from the director of "Pi" and "Requiem for a Dream," Aranofsky goes all-out and damn those who don't want to keep up with him. You can feel the filmmaker's passionate commitment to every moment in the movie. This guy knows what he's doing, and he's trying to put it across, and he'll do absolutely whatever it takes. Maybe even more.

In its delirious momentum, "The Fountain" reminds me not only of Aronofsky's previous films, but of the Ken Russell of "Altered States" or the John Boorman of "Excalibur." Because he's not afraid to go "out there," and to risk looking ridiculous by grappling with gigantic philosophical concepts, the movie works. There are a few rough spots, but the energy doesn't flag and it carries you along. And, in the bargain, "The Fountain" serves up some resonant mythological imagery you won't soon forget.

It begins, and ends, with the simple idea of a tree over a grave -- an image that (to me) perfectly encapsulates the yin-yang nature of life and death. I won't say anything more about it for now, except that Hugh Jackman's career should be reborn; and Brad Pitt was a fool to abandon this film -- especially for "Troy."

The press conference:

http://www.canada.com/topics/entertainment...302&k=21743 (http://www.canada.com/topics/entertainment/tiff/story.html?id=6ce8ec8b-9aeb-4e14-aa0c-26b6f3bca302&k=21743)

Aronofsky mixes weaving with tools from science class for movie magic
Vanessa Farquharson, National Post

After a half-hour delay, the press conference for The Fountain -- which screened last night and stars Rachel Weisz, Hugh Jackman and Ellen Burstyn -- finally began with a question for writer-director Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream) about how he crafts such layered, complicated scripts.

"I actually prefer to think of it as tapestry weaving," he clarified. "Like pulling together different threads ... a bunch of themes getting braided."

The end result of all this weaving is something akin to a magic carpet ride. The film follows one man's epic, thousand-year struggle to save the love of his life, starting in 16th-century Spain and ending up in 26th-century outer space.

In fact, the three phrases that cropped up over and over again during the question-and-answer period, whether from actors or journalists, were: "It blew my mind," "It blew me away" and "It was mind-blowing."

The source of all this cerebral blustering? Well, it all began in a petri dish.
"I wanted to reinvent space, how it looks," said Aronofsky. "I wanted a whole new feeling, something minimalist with no CGI because I didn't want to get into that holographic, cheesy look. So everything in the film that's set in space, we photographed in a petri dish."

"That's pretty cool," said Weisz, who sat poised with class despite a rather flouncy mime shirt and high-waisted belt.

"At one point we were pretty stuck getting financed," said producer Eric Watson, "but we showed them this petri-dish footage and it really impressed them."

"The effects team ... realized we could shape and manipulate the film's movement from darkness to light over three time periods so it was almost white by the end," Aronofsky said, adding, "That all came out of the petri dish."

But it wasn't the petri dish that spent six years working on making The Fountain a reality, from writing a script (sorry, weaving a tapestry) at a hotel in Mexico to finding a composer willing to spend just as long creating a note of music for almost every second of celluloid.

In fact, just trying to summarize the principal themes of the film leads Aronofsky into theories on everything from conquistadores who won't accept death to the spirituality of recycling to the place located somewhere in his spinal cord that drives him to make movies in the first place.
"I can't make films that don't ring true with me," he said. "I wish I knew how, though, because I'd make a lot more money."

While there were Internet rumours that Aronofsky was set to direct the next Batman instalment, he insists that was just hype. On the other hand, he admits that if he was sent the script for Pirates of the Caribbean 4, he'd give it a read.

Aronofsky's films have developed a strong cult following but critics are often divided over them. As he pointed out, many big-league reviewers panned Pi and a Variety critic said after Requiem came out that the director should consider going into therapy.

It seems, however, that most actors are desperate to work with Aronofsky, regardless of how many shrinks he may need.

"I wanted to have a part in this film no matter how small," said Burstyn, who also starred in Requiem, "and I've told him I want to be in all his films."
Aronofsky is remaining tight-lipped about his next project, but as the conference came to a close he dropped a little hint: "We do know what we're doing next," said Aronofsky, "and we promise you it's going to blow your mind."

And what Hugh was doing during all of this since he's not there.

Back in Oz for Now

Sydney Confidential September 14, 2006 12:00
NOT even a dodgy reception for his new movie can wipe the smile off Hugh Jackman's face.
Days after his new movie The Fountain was booed at the Venice Film Festival, Jackman was still beaming in his backpacker look as he stepped off the escalator at Sydney airport yesterday ahead of the final run of The Boy From Oz shows.

Having returned from a short break at a lifestyle retreat in the Gold Coast hinterland, Jackman has his Bronte home all to himself as he makes his last hurrah with the hit musical.

Wife Debbora-lee Furness and children and their children Oscar and Ava have have already returned to their New York.

"I've got three weeks on my own. This is a record for us,'' Jackman told Confidential.

"We've never been apart for longer than two weeks but my boy has started school so they had to go back.

"It's very serious, he's in first grade now.''

Jackman has plenty on his plate before he returns to Australia to shoot Baz Luhrmannn's new project with Nicole Kidman in February.

"I've got a few movies coming out so I've got a bit of press and I've got a movie to do in New York, The Tourist,'' he said.

The last eight shows of The Boy From Oz, starting tonight, are almost certain to be the Sydney audiences last chance to see Jackman as Peter Allen.

"It looks like it at the moment. There's no plans for the future...I'm definitely booked up for the next couple of years,'' he said.

Tickets are still available for two shows on Sunday.

The Fountain
TIFF 2006 Review: Love and eternity collide in this science fiction poem.
by Filip Vukcevic

September 15, 2006 - This film is a work of art. As such, it is not easy to define, discuss, or deconstruct. It is what it is: a highly sophisticated love story clothed in science fiction and breathed to life with a very deliberate tone. In other words, The Fountain is a work of cinema that may confound some, but should be seen by all.

Like Stanley Kubrick (2001) and Steven Soderbergh (Solaris) before him, Darren Aronofsky (Requim for a Dream) has decided to treat the genre of science fiction with a solemn and lyrical respect. He has taken a story about the human heart, with all of its inherent strength and vice, and used extrapolation and myth to elevate it to epic, nigh on eternal, proportions.

The story is told through three narrative tracks. One takes place during the time of colonial Spain, one in modern day, and one in the distant future. Each of the stories features Hugh Jackman (Tom/Tomas) as a man committed to serving, or saving, the love of his life, played by Rachel Weisz (Izzi/Queen).

The main narrative takes place in modern day and sees Tom, a scientist, trying to save his wife, Izzi, from a brain tumor. Tom is wholly committed to his goal: he will not let Izzi die. Tragically, he forsakes the few, final moments that they have together for more time in his lab. Meanwhile, Izzi keeps herself busy by writing a manuscript, a story which tells the tale of a Spanish Conquistador who is asked by his Queen to travel to South America in search of the fabled Tree of Life.

Intercut with the modern day story and the Spaniard's quest is the lonely and quiet tale of the Astronaut; a bald and un-aged Tom, floating through space in a translucent sphere which contains only himself and a gnarled old tree. Tom whispers to the tree and caresses it before apologizing and cutting off a piece of its bark which he puts in his mouth. The Tree of Life, it appears, has been found. Tom hurtles through the void with it, their destination, and the reason for their journey, revealed as the story unfolds.

Aronofsky has crafted a film that is not easily accessible. Despite some of its commercial imagery, The Fountain is an intellectual art film. As the three narratives interweave, the story becomes both clearer and more undefined. This is not a flaw. Rather, it is, as any classic work of cinema will prove, a challenge: can the storyteller create something that has different meaning for different people? The Fountain is a worthy attempt. One which succeeds in all of the most important ways: tone, story, and character.

This is far and away the most emotionally intense film that Hugh Jackman has done, and he performs admirably. He is a man driven by a passion so consuming that it hollows him out, filling the whole of him. Jackman's performance communicates this intensity with a surprising depth that he has not displayed before. Similarly, Rachel Weisz's turn as a terrified woman who desperately wants to share her last moments with her husband is raw and genuinely saddening.

The score is fitting and the visual design of the picture, from the Mayan temple to the stark and golden starscape, is gorgeous. Aronofsky's camerawork is small and carefully constructed so as to communicate, not necessarily the story, but the emotion, in the best way possible.

If anything is holding the movie back, it is that its story is, at times, cold. Mood is conveyed wonderfully, but occasionally the narrative slips and the viewer is left hanging. The passion and wonder are designed to go hand-in-hand, but this is not always what we are presented with, sometimes we get one at the expense of the other. As with all deep, profound works, it takes time to discover if the film's question will still be important one year from now, five years from now, and beyond. That is, ultimately, what this movie is: a question, not an answer.

This film forces you to work. You cannot just sit back and slip into another world. The Fountain asks you to slip into yourself. You must find bits and pieces within you and use them to fill-in the jigsaw puzzle that is at the emotional core of this film. If you can do that, the final picture, once it has revealed itself, is something of beauty and awe. Neither painting, nor poem, nor song, it is something all its own.

From dvdtimes.co.uk:

Scoop (R1) in November - Artwork added

Universal Studios Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of Scoop for 21st November 2006 priced at $29.98 SRP. Scarlett Johansson and Hugh Jackman star in Woody Allen’s latest, a twisted tale of murder and mystery. When an inquisitive college journalist (Johansson) stumbles upon new clues to a string of murders, her investigation leads directly to a handsome businessman (Jackman), who draws her in with his mysterious charm. Could a whirlwind romance with the subject of her search also become the most dangerous scoop of a lifetime?

A barebones release the film is presented in 1.85:1 Anamorphic Widescreen with English DD2.0 Mono audio and optional English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles.

Does that mean scans of anything new and interesting? (Not that I'm begging or anything!)

Retro,
It will still be nearly 4 months between the theatrical and DVD release of Scoop. It did fairly well for a Woody Allen movie, but not as well as hoped (Focus had said they were hoping for $12m but so far it only as $10.5m). I don't think the film even has a UK distributor, yet with one explanation being that Matchpoint did badly in the UK and Scoop was too expensive.

^^That makes sense. Though i think its kind of tragic that a film starring Hugh Jackman and Scarlett Johansson can't get a wider release in the states.

Just after Scoop opened, a rep from Focus said they weren't planning to expand into more theatres because they didn't want to buy box office at the expense of profitability. My guess is that this type of film will earn most of its money through DVD sales with the theatrical release being used more as a marketing campaign.

Did you see than Jimmy Marsden's film 10th & Wolf is out on DVD, just one month after its theatrical release? This must have been planned before its very limited released (6 theatres) but the theatrical run got them publicity and avoided the "straight to video" stigma.

I've seen it!! (Natch) - I thought it was VERY funny! But then again, I'm a New Yorker and I know so many people like Woody Allen - but I know he gets on a lot of people's nerves. I thought he was hysterical and the movie was very funny. There were many people in the theater laughing throughout. Hugh naturally looked great - he filmed this right before X-Men 3 so he must have been getting "prepared."

"Relatively" new - it's been out for a month or two. Some on the IMDB MB who have seen the movie say that shot is very spoilery. Lots of people over there have seen it at the film festivals and just like the critics - "masterpiece" or "utter drivel." A lot of pieces to put together - apparently not a movie where you can leave your brain at the door.

"Scoop" was really funny...I actually wound up seeing it twice, and the second time I wasn't expecting it to be crowded, and the theater wound up being almost full. The audience was cracking up through the whole movie.

It's totally predictable, but I don't think it was meant to be a really deep murder mystery anyway. I'm from NY too, and Woody's whole neurotic Brooklyn thing is just hilarious especially since the movie takes place in London. (I loved that one line about "...she was from Manchester, or wherever, I don't know where they get these people") :woot:

Also, I saw a commercial for "Flags of our Fathers" during The Daily Show last night (stay with me here), which releases on October 20th...same day as "The Prestige". Commercials for that might not be too far behind now, either. ;)

Hugh on the "Wolverine" movie - my guess is after he finishes the Baz Luhrman movie, which starts filming in February.

Jackman Hopes to Film Wolverine in '07

The Aussie actor with a mad-on for mutants talks about his solo film.
http://focusin.ads.targetnet.com//ad/id=dbzrocks&opt=hin&rw=300&rh=250&urlid=5&cv=220&uid=1 (http://focusin.ads.targetnet.com//ad/id=dbzrocks&opt=cin&rw=300&rh=250&urlid=5&cv=220&uid=1)
Hugh Jackman says he's hoping to begin filming his X-Men spin-off film, Wolverine, sometime next year.

That would mean a 2008 debut for the film.

Jackman recently talked to Comics Continuum while promoting the Oct. 2 release of X-Men: The Last Stand on DVD.

"For me as an actor, it's an amazing part," Jackman said. "I think Wolverine, in, not just the comic-book genre, but any kind of action movie, is one of the great parts. I love playing him, and it's a challenge."

Look for the film to deal with Wolverine's past and include Stryker and Sabretooth. Jackman stressed that Wolverine is not a substitute for X-Men 4: "I want to make a piece that's in every way -- stylistically and character-wise -- that's different, that shows new stuff," Jackman said.

Regarding X3: "For me, if you're going to play a role and you're going to do it again, you want to do it better, you want to take it further and you want to show more," Jackman said. "And in the script, I think we had the best script to start with of any of three."

Minor correction - it first aired in 1995. Hugh was right out of drama school and this is where he met his future wife Deborra-Lee Furness, who as the star of the program. I think there were 11 or 13 one-hour episodes in all (something like that) and this was the pilot. He was all of 26/27 years old.

I looked for the new Starlog today, but it's not out in bookstores yet. It's killing me, I've been reading that magazine since I was 12 and now I can't find it! :cmad:

They did have what looks like an awesome new hardcover X-Men encyclopedia-type book out that I hadn't seen before. It's shrinkwrapped (and huge!), but according to the back it's everything from the first comic to the newest movie...which they called "The Final Stand". Oops.

It's $75.00, but it looks really cool.

**Just looked that book up online (where it's cheaper in most places), it does sound really good:

"Through exclusive interviews with many of the key creators and contributors to the X-Men Universe from all media—among them Stan Lee, Chris Claremont and John Romita from the comics, and Hugh Jackman, Halle Berry, Sir Ian McKellen, Bryan Singer and Brett Ratner from the world of film—X-Men: The Characters and Their Universe tells the complete story of how these strange and often unlikely heroes have transcended the illustrated page to become part of our collective consciousness."

Oh yes, I will! I´ll try to give all my impressions about the movie without being too spoilerish.

Well, have a great time!

I'll most likely be seeing it in NY on opening day--I get out of work early that day for the holiday weekend, but I'm seeing "Les Miserables" on Broadway that night, so I'm going to see the movie in between. Should be an interesting day, to say the least! :woot:

First time you see Les Mis? The musical was performed here, but in another city, and I couldn´t see it.
"The Fountain" will open here at the same day as in the US, I guess. I´m a bit worried about the reviews the movie will receive from Brazilian critics, (the first ones will appear during the film festival) seeing as some American critics have been so hard on it... :wow:
But I know I´ll love it anyway! :cwink:

It's my ninth time seeing Les Miz, actually. :wow: I've seen it 7 times in NY, and once in London.

It closed on Broadway about 3 years ago--"The Boy From Oz" replaced it at the same theater right after, but now it's back for a limited run. It's my favorite musical, and I was so sad when they took down the marquee at the Imperial the day after it closed, but they immediately replaced it with BFO pictures so I didn't stay sad long. :woot:

I'm playing complete avoidance of the American critics that week until after I see the movie. I've given up reading them at this point...they either think it's brilliant or terrible, and at this point I just want to see it for myself.

Movies like this will always divide the audience. Some think it's amazing and some think it's skinning-the-babies kind of bad. But even pure hatred is better than; Yeah, it was okay.

Picked up Starlog #350 with Hugh on the cover - chock full of Hugh goodies!

1. The Magic Man - for his next trick, Christopher Nolan adapts The Prestige.

It's a five-page story with a few new pictures (good one on the first page with Hugh in full costume including top hat). I loved what he said about the characters - Borden is a natural magician, who has the ability to invent a trick and see how another magician does it but he can't understand the relationship of the performer to the audience. Angier is not as much of a natural magician, so can't invent a trick or immediately pick up how another magician does a trick but understands stagecraft and can sell it to an audience. Nolan said Christian has the ability to close himself off from the audience as he performs so you see him performing great tricks but it's unfriendly to the audience. Then he said "Hugh comes to life on stage, and he has this charisma and rapport with the audience that not only is he very skilled at, but he believe it's the most important thing there is. And these two guys just embody those qualities." So it looks like moviegoers will get to see Hugh's stage presence!

2. Mutuant Illusions - the X-Men wizards reveal their special FX secrets - 4 pages.

3. Hugh Jackman Speaks - from down under, he talks of his five fantasy films - 4 pages (this interview was done on August 22).

This fall, that Boy from Oz is (a) a magician (b) rat © penguin (d) immortal (e) mutant (f) all of the above.

Good interview with Hugh covering all the movies. About Happy Feet he said "I'm very proud to be part of it, I'll admit I'm a small part of it but it was a whole lot of fun." He said Oscar hasn't seen any of his X-Men movies - he said he knows some five-year olds can see them, but he thinks it's doubly weird to watch your dad slicing people up - he won't take him seriously when he "yells at him to stop hitting the girl next door." He also said about the Baz epic that it will "take up quite a bit of next year. We'll be all over Australia doing that." About Wolverine it said that is tentatively scheduled to be filmed in late 2007.

4. Flushed Away - animated rats find adventure in London's sewers - 4 pages.

What colorful pictures from the movie! It sounds hysterical!

The director said "...and Hugh is an incredibly charming man. We had all kinds of different ways to go with Roddy. Eventually we asked Hugh to be Hugh because he's so great. Hugh gave Roddy a wonderfully light touch. Hugh has this terrific comic, Cary Grant-iconic touch."

Great articles all!

Also, new article with Tom Rothman covering lots of stuff - the Hugh parts:

IESB: What is going on with the Baz Luhrman film

TR: It’s moving forward, it gonna go in February or March in Australia with Baz, Nicole [Kidman] and Hugh Jackman. So it’s an epic picture, doesn’t have a title right now, and it’s Baz really moving into a new genre, very sweeping but naturalistic.

IESB: How soon before we start hearing about some new casting announcements?

TR: I don’t know probably not until after the first of the year. There are a lot of very interesting secondary parts, a lot of really cool character parts but, the heart of the movie is Nicole and Hugh. It’s African Queen or Giant or Out of Africa, the story centers on the adventure and romance between the two of them.

IESB: Going back to the X-Men properties, Wolverine, there was a script review online, has the script changed much since then?
TR: I don’t know, what was the review?

IESB: I don’t know, I didn’t read that review, I try to stay away from script reviews.

TR: You should. There’s a David Benioff script, all we’ve ever had is a first draft so it’s being worked on right now, so if there was a script review it could only have been entirely premature.

IESB: I do know it was a positive review

TR: Even if it’s positive, I am glad it’s positive and we’re optimistic the first draft was good but that’s all that could have possibly been. We are no where near a finished script on that.

IESB: And when could we expect any movement on that, sometime next year?

TR: Our hope would be that Hugh Jackman after he does Baz Luhrmann’s film in Australia next year, the first half of next year, our hope would be that he would do it in the second half of next year. That really ultimately will be up to him.

I got that tonight too! Haven't read the articles yet....I was on my way to the movies, but yes, I loved the picture with the top hat too. :)

But I was at the movies tonight (finally saw "Little Miss Sunshine"), and they had:

-a banner for "Happy Feet"

-a standee for "Flushed Away," which was being held up by a big inflatable toilet :wow:

-a poster for "The Fountain"

-a standee for "The Prestige" -which had 3 sides, one with Hugh, one with Christian Bale, and another with Scarlett Johannsen, and you can see through all 3 so the characters come together on all of them.

Plus, they showed "The Prestige" trailer before the movie. It was the first I'd seen the trailer in a theater, it looked even better on the big screen. :woot:

There's a billboard for it in Times Square that went up a few weeks ago (it's on Broadway near 49th St, near Colony Records), and I've seen the ads on a few of the phone kiosks around the city.

And I've seen quite a few commercials for it recently--my favorite is when Roddy gets somehow catapulted through a clothesline and flies through the air covered in all the clothes, and the rats are on the ground saying: "Is it a bird?" "Is it a plane?", then "Is that guy wearing my underpants?!"

It does look very funny. :woot:

I've got to watch network TV more often!

This is Hugh's last weekend as Peter Allen - he's in Perth, where he graduated from the drama school WAAPA in 1994. He was back at the school this week, dedicating a theater and doing a workshop for the students. After his last show on Monday, it's back to NY to start filming The Tourist on Oct. 9 and start promoting all his movies!

Jackman the real Boy From Oz

Jan Hallam, STM Arts editor
September 30, 2006

LAST night - the night before the AFL grand final - 8000 were at the Burswood Dome on their feet cheering and stomping, waving scarves.

It was a gathering of the faithful, but the shouting wasn’t for the West Coast Eagles. It was for two great showmen – Hugh Jackman and Peter Allen.

The hype for The Boy From Oz has almost rivalled the footy and did the consummate showman Jackman play up to it, even emerging from an onstage costume change in an Eagles jersey blinged up with sequins.

In was one of many moves the WAAPA grad pulled out, which had the massive Dome audience completely won over before interval (half-time for the footy lovers).

We are a parochial, often a hard audience to win over in the West, but from the minute Jackman came on stage, his intentions were clear. He left this city a wide-eyed talented theatre graduate, he returned a huge star of stage and screen.

Chuck in some of that Peter Allen chutzpah and Jackman opened those wide arms, dazzled that million-dollar smile and said, “love me”. And 8000 people did. It was a sweet moment for the audience and the man on stage.

He was, of course, aided by the wonderful songs of Peter Allen, some of which will go down as real pop and show classics and sung beautifully by Jackman.

Then there’s Allen’s own extraordinary life story, which offered the stage show plenty of dramatic potential.

To see Allen perform live, he came to Perth in the early 1980s, was an emotional workout.

His would sing some of those deeply moving emotional songs and shred his listeners’ hearts.

Then he’d spy a good looking bloke in the third row and ask him backstage. Irony was never far from his lips.

While he never took himself too seriously, he was serious about his work and he wanted his audience to take it seriously too.

Jackman’s Allen was less ironic but Jackman meant business. His razor sharp wit and fearless improvisation was amazing, as he roamed around the audience daring himself to take the show into uncharted territory.

Opening night it was accountant Max, who bravely and good naturedly played along throwing in a couple of unexpected curved balls which Jackman knocked out of the park for six.

Some big showbiz names were alongside Jackman. Rock chick Chrissy Amphlett played Judy Garland’s emotional fragility to perfection, while Colleen Hewett as Allen’s warmhearted mum
Marion showed she could still belt out an anthem and bring the stadium down.

The live orchestra – supplement by a swag of local musicians – was a treat and the cast was slick and sparkly.

But this night was Jackman’s. He did everyone – including Peter Allen – proud.

Definitely watch now...I've seen trailers for "The Prestige" during both "Desperate Housewives" and "Grey's Anatomy," commercials for the X3 DVD during Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert's shows all week long, at least one commercial for "Happy Feet" and the "Flushed Away" ads were starting to become pretty common on most of the shows.

Plus I finally saw a poster for "The Fountain" last night when I was at the movies. That was very exciting. :)

So guys, here are some of my impressions about "The Fountain" (here called "Fonte da Vida" - "Fountain of Life"), that I watched last saturday at the Rio Film Festival.
The movie is absolutely amazing. I really can´t understand some of the vicious attacks it has been receiving from critics, because it´s truly a work of art, a movie filled with depth and passion. Also, it´s not "confusing" or "crazy" or "it makes no sense" AT ALL, only if you don´t want to take part of the experience that The Fountain proposes, only if you don´t want to let yourself go and transcend the simple experience of watching a movie with popcorn in your hands.
I was a bit worried of not being too spoilerish when talking about the story, but really, it´s almost impossible to spoil The Fountain, because it´s not a movie you can tell, only a movie you can feel. And yes, you´ll certainly feel the need to analyze it later, talking to your friends or relatives, but I bet your first reaction will be silence. When I watched it there was an absolute silence when the film ended, and even when the credits had rolled and the lights had turned on, many couldn´t leave their seats and just stayed there, stunned. Myself included.
Hugh is so good in it that it´s almost impossible (and painful) to think his performance probably won´t be recognized with an Oscar or/and a Golden Globe, because of all the controversies around the movie, but just let me say that, as a fan, I´m truly proud of him. I´m sure you´ll be too.
I can´t wait to watch The Fountain again. November, come quickly!

Nice two-page story in the November issue of Premiere magazine, including two pages of what I guess is one of the pivotal scenes of the movie.

...(Aronofsky is happy to let viewers interpret the exact implications of this - both for Tom and the ethereal Izzi - as they will. "What's important" he says "is the character's emotional journey." "Keep rolling!" Aronofsky yells. "Let it out!" Jackman complies: "Don't die!" When the camera runs out of film, the stunned crew breaks into applause.

A little later Weisz joins Jackman for a hopsital scene in which Izzi urges tom to let her go. "I don't think I've ever cried this much on anything," Jackman says to her between takes. Replies Weisz, "We should call this "The Fountain of Tears."

If you think about it, this role is perfect for Hugh since he is so used to being onstage and Angier is supposed to be more of the showman than Borden (Christian Bale) is. I hope his charisma comes across on the big screen on the stage as it does "live" - should be interesting to see what he says about this on the talk show circuit.

The standee I've seen at the movie theater is cool. It's 3-sided, and it's got Hugh, Christian, and Scarlett on each side. But it's transparent, so when you look at one side, you can see the others as well.

This was kinda funny, I found this from Hugh in the Premiere article about the movie:

"Christian and I became good friends. I remember a really good conversation about contracts for superhero movies and the perks you get on those films. Not in a competitive way, but as in 'That's cool!'" And here's an alert for the producers of whatever Batman film follows 2008's The Dark Knight: "Christian said, 'How did you renegotiate between the second and the third...?"

got a message with that familiar ozzie twang. hugh's back in town. he's been off in oz high-kicking his way across that continent, entertaining crowds of 15,000+ screaming fanatics with the boy from oz routine. it went off super well by all accounts. but because he was there he couldn't be with us in venice, deauville and toronto. i brought him up to speed on all that went down. he was so sad to have missed it all. but it was grand to see him and see him and rachel together again. i can't wait till he sees the film with an audience, which i imagine will be at our l.a. premier on november 11th when we centerpiece the afi fest. that will be a good night.

Hey narrows, if you're in the city today...keep a lookout for the newspaper kiosks. Hugh is on the cover of a free real estate magazine called The Resident.

My friend at work left it on my desk (which was very nice), but I just ran out to lunch and noticed them everywhere. Trust me, the cover photo is hard to miss. ;)

It's just a little interview about The Prestige, but there is a photo from the Australian version of The Boy From Oz. What any of this has to do with real estate, I have no idea...but I'm sure their readership skyrocketed this week regardless. :woot:

Interview: Hugh Jackman On "Wolverine" Written by Robert Sanchez

Saturday, 14 October 2006

Hugh Jackman stars, alongside Christian Bale, in The Prestige as Robert Angier a very talented but obsessed magician. Soon, Jackman will be returning to the role of Wolverine in the X-Men character's film due out in 2008.

As Wolverine and part of the X-Men team, Jackman was put on the map as an actor to be reckoned with. Now with three X-Men films behind him, next on the list is the Wolverine prequel. Where did he come from? How did he get the adamantium bonded to his skeleton? Who makes those spiffy X-Men outfits anyway? These questions and more answered in the upcoming Wolverine prequel.

The IESB sat down with Jackman and a few other journalists today at The Prestige press day in Pasadena. Jackman revealed that the final script for Wolverine has been turned in and signed off on. He also said that shooting would begin immediately after he completes filming on the as yet untitled Baz Luhrmann project he is signed on to do with Nicole Kidman in Australia.

Check out Hugh Jackman in his own words below.

HJ: We just now signed off on the [Wolverine] script. If you know the history of the X-Men movies, this is a revolution for us. We're a year away from shooting the film and we have the script, and by the way it's unbelievable. It's the David Benioff script. He's a huge fan. You guys know Benioff, one of the hardest working writers in town. He was beating down our door to write this movie. It was like the most amazing thing. So we have this fantastic script and I have a couple movies coming up in the next month and I might be able to tell you who the director is by then. We are serious talks right now.

Q: We know that it's a prequel is it going to follow any of the Japanese storylines?

HJ: At present no, that is something that we really want to do, that's a whole other movie. What we really want to do is establish who he is and find out how he became Wolverine.

Q: So there is a possibility of Wolverine 2?

HJ: I'm not ruling it out.

RIght at this time during the press day, Christian Bale walked by and patted Hugh Jackman on the back.

HJ says referring to Bale: He's cool

And I said, "He's Batman." (we all laughed)

HJ: We would spar a little bit on set.

Q: Who would win?

HJ: Come on, even Christian would say Wolverine. Surely (laughter). He's got a cool belt and some cool gadgets but let's face it he's human, right? (laughter)

The IESB luckily (accidentally) got a candid moment as well with Hugh Jackman during the press day. We talked about the upcoming X-Men ensemble films that Fox Chairman Tom Rothman has spoken about starring younger X-Men. Would he consider returning as Wolverine?

IESB: Speaking to Rothman recently, he acknowledged that the characters and storylines of the existing films are complete. But he has not ruled out other ensemble X-Men films, would you consider being a part of those films?

HJ: I don't know. I don't know if I would come back in a big way.
IESB: A cameo?

HJ: Maybe. I really want to do Wolverine, I don't know what they have planned. I heard they were thinking about a younger X-Men film.
IESB: Exactly, a younger ensemble film.

HJ: Yeah, I would come back and do a small appearance.

So there you have, the latest up to date news on the Wolverine film straight from Wolverine himself, Hugh Jackman.
Check back this week for the full transcript from our interview with Jackman on The Prestige.

Hardworking Hug
October 15, 2006
BY CINDY PEARLMAN

It's not every Hollywood actor who will sit down and talk about what turns him on. Hugh Jackman is Australian, so he's a bit different.

"Everything is turning me on so much that it's impossible to say no," says the handsome Tony winner who is, of course, talking about the slew of fall films that he stars in. Hey, get your mind out of the gutter!

Next week, the man known for playing Wolverine in the "X-Men" franchise stars opposite Christian Bale in "The Prestige."

It's all about the lives of magicians and just how far they will go to ruin each other's acts," Jackman says of the Christopher Nolan-directed film. "Christian Bale is my arch nemesis and we really fight for our positions in the world of magic."

Jackman has other tricks up his sleeve. He also stars for director Darren Aronofsky in the upcoming drama "The Fountain." And he voices Roddy the rat in the animated film, "Flushed Away."

First, let's set the record straight. I don't have 10 movies coming out this fall. I've actually filmed these movies over many years, and now they're all coming out, it seems, in the same month. I hope people like me a lot because there is a lot of me out there.

I loved the idea of doing an animated film. I've got two kids. I also have a small role in the animated "Happy Feet" because I loved the script. I play a very small character called Memphis, an Elvis wannabe.

I identify with the character of Wolverine. I can always identify with that feeling of being alienated. A lot of performers feel that way. Wolverine is 10 times that. He doesn't know his past, so there is a lot of pain.

But there isn't a person on this planet who doesn't mask some kind of pain that comes out in behavior in some way.

I will do a Wolverine movie, which will require me to really go berserk. I have two drafts of the script. There is so much to still say about this character I love. I think of him in a "Mad Max" way. You don't know everything about him.

Honestly, I can't believe all this has happened to me. If five years ago, I had to pick a dream of where I would be in five years, it would be this dream. Everything is turning me on so much that it's impossible to say no.

Fame is strange. The paparazzi guys are running across the road to take photos of me. I honestly still think, "Who are they shooting?" I actually look around and think, "Oh, it's not some actor. They're taking photos of me."

Fatherhood completely changed my life. I'm completely hands on. I don't care what the kids do, only if they're happy. I've had them poop on me in public, and all I will think is, "I love being a father." You can't be so uptight when you have kids. Whatever it is, you just go with it. And I'm very good at just being in the moment.

But I do hate when you have someone stare at you when your child is being a little loud or laughing too hard. I just think, "Don't you wish you felt that kind of joy in your life? Don't you wish you were laughing and not staring so hard at a parent trying to do his job?"

Isn't that a riot? Goes to show you what a talent he is - how many other actors can go back and forth from theater to movies - do musical theater, win a Tony Award, and do Wolverine? That one clip where he's singing "Once Before I Go" from The Boy from Oz - he got a standing ovation on that every night, and that's not even the last song of the show. And Lauren Shuler Donner saw him in Oklahoma! and was one of the reasons he got the part of Wolverine.

I´ve just read this about the actress Piper Perabo, who worked with Hugh in The Prestige, and I thought it was quite funny: :cwink:

"The Prestige" cast fulfilled that second wish, as well as one she may not have known she had: Spend her first day at work making out with Jackman. "So he's standing there," she remembers of their first meeting, "no shirt on, pumped-up Wolverine body. ... You could faint dead away just by walking into the room. Fantastic way to start a movie!"

Shirtless scene? :wow: I mean...make out scene?!? :wow::wow::wow:
Ohhh, lucky girl! :woot:

So, how about the Jay Leno interview, for those who happened to watch it? Any Prestige or Fountain clips?

I just watched it! They showed a clip from "The Prestige", with Hugh and David Bowie. Jay said it was getting Oscar buzz. :woot:

The interview was good...Jay showed off Hugh's cover photo on this month's Men's Vogue (which I must go looking for tomorrow), and he said his little boy Oscar called the photo "disturbing" when a girl in his class showed it to him. He also said they took Oscar to an acting class, and when the kids were asked what they would need on a desert island, he said "room service."

The also talked about the Australian version of "The Boy From Oz", and some mishaps when he tried to bring people on stage who couldn't...including someone who was incapacitated, another who had only one leg, and someone possibly going through chemo who looked he was about to pop him if he asked him to dance one more time. :wow:

(wow, and I saw it in NY it was Elvis Costello who came up on stage!)

He also did a magic trick with a marble, and mentioned doing a trick that his son figured out when he tried it at home, so the trick was cut from the movie when he tried it again there.

And...Jay wished him a happy birthday, he mentioned he was filming "The Tourist" that day, and they had a party that night, where all the Aussies stayed until 5am. :oldrazz:

And I definitely can't wait to see "The Prestige" on Friday!

No problem! I'm actually more of a Letterman fan, mostly because I'm from NY and his show is more NY-centered, but I like Jay too. Hugh looked good last night--although he did look a little tired. They must have been doing all the "Prestige" publicity all weekend.

You said they played "Pump it Up" :word:
You´re so lucky danoyse, Elvis is one of my favorites too! :wow:

Yep, that's what he played! We were in the rear mezzanine, we didn't even know Elvis was in the audience. Hugh had gotten an older couple up to dance, which was really cute, but then he told them to keep standing and asked the band if they had any Elvis Costello. Then he told the audience, "I'm being naughty. Mr. Costello is in the audience tonight."

So then he got him to come up on stage and he took the guitar and started playing with the band. You could tell it wasn't planned--everyone on stage was going crazy! Hugh was dancing like a lunatic, and did the 'not worthy!' bow. It was just insane!

After Elvis went back to his seat, he thanked him again, completely dropped his Peter Allen voice and said "You made my year!!"

Elvis had also brought his mom to the show--apparently it was her first show in 18 years. So later, Hugh was playing a joke one of the stagehands having to eat Vegemite on stage (she'd lost a bet), which was really gross. Then he said "Where's Elvis' mum?! Aren't you glad this is the first show you've seen in 18 years? Broadway used to be so refined...now it's turned into Fear Factor!"

It was honestly the single craziest night I've ever had at a Broadway show. And that wasn't the only thing that happened that night! :wow:

November 3rd for me...but maybe I´ll manage to go to the São Paulo Film Fest (yep, another movie fest in another city!), they´ll show The Prestige there and guess, The Fountain as well! :cwink:

I'm on vacation but I've been keeping up with all the news and I did see him on Leno - dayonese did a great job recapping it! Hugh was filming The Tourist last Thursday and Friday in NY, then he went to LA - Saturday and Sunday he did the the event posted above with Rothman and had a screening of The Prestige on Sunday, Leno was Monday and Tuesday (today) is the premiere of The Prestige and probably some other stuff too. He's back in NY at least on Thursday because he's doing Good Morning America and Regis & Kelly on that day.

JACKMAN SAYS THE FOUNTAIN BRINGS OUT BERSERKER RAGE
10.17.06
By Devin Faraci (devin@chud.com)
Contributing sources: SciFi Wire (http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=0&id=38594)

Hugh Jackman recently did press for this weekend’s magician movie, The Prestige, and SciFi.com asked him about the negative reaction his next film, The Fountain, garnered at some festivals in the past few months. Hugh wasn’t at the festivals – he was doing The Boy From Oz in Oz, it turns out – but he has some opinions, especially about the angle that the media (gulp, I think that includes me) took with the story.

“The truth was, at that press screening, about 80 percent of the people gave it a standing ovation, and about 20 percent of the people booed… a fight began between the press. And two of them had to be pulled apart. And I thought, 'That's a great story. Why wasn't that story told?' That's exactly how the movie, I think, will be seen."

I have been at many screenings where I wanted to beat the **** out of people, so I do believe that the disagreement he talks about came to blows.

Jackman echoed my thoughts about the people who booed being just plain offbase, by the way: “ [i] think regardless of what you think of the content, it's visually amazing production-wise. I think it'd be hard to deny that it deserves attention, even if you don't like the subject matter. But hey, that's just me.” This is the main sticking point for me – even if you don’t like the movie it’s impossible to realistically deny that it looks amazing, that it’s a beautifully made movie.

Meanwhile I still stand strong saying that this is a film that should earn Jackman an Oscar nomination. Sadly, while he definitely deserves it, his actual odds will be decided by how the rest of the press reacts to the movie when they finally see it.

Jackman to Exec Produce Viva Blackpool

Source: Variety (http://www.variety.com/)
October 18, 2006

CBS has given a put pilot commitment to a U.S. version of hit BBC mystery-musical miniseries "Viva Blackpool," reports Variety.

Hugh Jackman is set to appear as a guest in the pilot and is expected to executive produce the project along with partner John Palermo and their Seed Productions.

BBC and Sony Pictures TV will produce the U.S. version, along with CBS Paramount Network TV. Bob Lowry ("Huff") is writing and executive producing. Peter Bowker, who created the U.K. original, is also set as an executive producer.

"Viva Blackpool" revolves around sleazy small-time casino owner Ripley Holden, who attempts to open a big-time resort in Las Vegas. The show uses song hits of the past and present to tell the story -- which includes murder and mayhem, love and infidelity.

Funny moment on TV this morning...Christian Bale was on Good Morning America promoting "The Prestige", and was explaining how his character was the better magician, and Hugh's is the better showman, and he said "Which Hugh is, you know, he's annoying as hell. He's a great actor, he's a great singer, he's a great dancer..." :oldrazz:

At the end of the interview, Robin Roberts mentioned that Hugh would be on the show tomorrow, and Christian said "Oh, and I'm sure he'll be showing you all sorts of magic tricks...here:" and he did the one where he pretends to take his finger off. "Don't ask how that's done. It will blow your mind."

It was quite funny. They showed another clip from the movie I hadn't seen before--it really looks good! Can't wait to see it on Friday. :woot:

Oh, I got that copy of Men's Vogue yesterday. You gotta love fashion magazines...they have to tell you how much everything they wear in the photos costs. I think Hugh's wardrobe in that issue cost more than my car. :wow:

But the photos are much nicer than my car. ;)

I just got back from "The Prestige." It was crazy sold out...I saw it in NY, and it was so full that people were going back to change their tickets for another show because there just weren't any seats left.

They also showed the trailer for "The Fountain", which was the first time I'd seen the trailer on the big screen--it looked amazing!

So anyway, the movie is really, really good. It has so many twists you probably need to watch it twice. I read the book, so I already knew most of the twists (it's much closer to the book than I thought it would be), so I was picking up a lot of the hidden stuff right from the beginning.

Hugh and Christian are fantastic, not suprisingly. The rivalry they have is totally vicious and nasty. In the book, a lot of the stuff they pulled on each other was almost petty. Here's it's amplifed to total cruelty. And they're just not nice characters. In fact, Hugh has a line that is so unbelievably cold that a few people in the audience gasped when I saw it tonight.

I can't go into too much more without giving away spoilers...but it was great. It's worth it just to watch Hugh and Christian--they were just amazing. I think I'll definitely see it again. :woot:

I saw it too!!! I thought the theater was pretty crowded for a 4:10 show on a Friday afternoon. Loved the movie but I gotta say I'm glad I read the book first - yes, I'm that kind of person. I'm glad I knew *some* of the stuff that was happening going in because I may not have caught it while viewing and would have missed a lot of stuff.

The movie was great - lots of twists and turns and you really did have to pay attention! Hugh was great!!! Loved his "different faces" (those who saw the movie will know what I mean)! He still had that Wolvie body in the shirtless scene LOL!

It really was great. Even though I read the book and knew a lot of the twists, I still want to see it again because I know I didn't catch everything. I was reading some other reviews online and there was a lot of stuff I didn't see!

I'm a big Christian Bale fan too, so seeing them the two of them together was just awesome. But I've seen Christian do so many things in the movies...this was the first time I've really gotten to see Hugh get to do some wild stuff in a movie, and I loved that.

And they were terrible people! I never thought of them as Batman and Wolverine once. They were just twisted. It was great. :woot:

David Bowie was really good too...he actually got most of the laughs in the movie (and there aren't many). Andy Serkis plays his assistant, it was so weird to hear him with a NY accent.

I can't go into a lot without getting into spoilers, but definitely see it!!

No, I don't think it's hard to follow if you haven't read the book. They're saying a lot of the surprises are obvious the second time you see it, but since I knew a lot of suprises (and they did change a few from the book), I was picking a lot of it up the first time instead.

But I was noticing new things when I saw it the second time, so it's definitely re-watchable.

My folks saw it this weekend too--my dad read the book, my mom hadn't, and she didn't pick up what the ending was at all until it happened.

So I think it works whether you read the book or not.

Flushed has SF&F Homages

Look closely, the directors of the animated film Flushed Away told SCI FI Wire: There are lots of inside jokes that SF&F fans will enjoy in the upcoming computer-animated movie. "We have to do it," co-director Sam Fell said in an interview. "I mean, look at the cast we have."

Fell referred to Flushed Away's voice cast, which includes such actors as Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings and X-Men), Hugh Jackman (X-Men, The Fountain), Andy Serkis (King Kong, The Prestige), Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest), Jean Reno (Godzilla, Rollerball) and more. "We threw in little things that some people may notice, and others may not notice, and it won't be distracting," co-director David Bowers added.

Flushed Away centers on a pampered rat named Roddy (Jackman), who finds himself summarily flushed down into the sewers, where he encounters a different class of rat society. In one scene, as Roddy searches through doll outfits for something to wear, "for a brief instant, he holds up his Wolverine outfit [from the X-Men movies]," Bowers said. "It's a quick moment, but in the right audience, it gets a big laugh."

One of the funniest moments, which is also one of the most difficult to catch, comes when McKellen's frog character opens the door to a giant refrigerator, in which he has imprisoned Roddy. "If you look closely, you'll see Han Solo frozen in ice in there, too," Fell said. "We have little things like that all throughout the film."

Flushed Away comes from Aardman Animations, the same company responsible for the stop-motion-animated hit films Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Chicken Run. Bowers, who worked on Chicken Run, said fans may notice an homage to that film's rat character Fetcher. But he added that the filmmakers weren't going to be blatant enough to include a nod to the cheese-loving Englishman Wallace and his intelligent dog, Gromit. "We borrow some of the look of the Wallace and Gromit characters, but we don't include them," said Bowers.

Kate Winslet also stars in Flushed Away, voicing a sassy sewer rat named Rita. The Titanic star's character is seen piloting a boat in Flushed Away, with the requisite Titanic joke, Bowers said. "We actually used more from The African Queen in those segments," he added. "That's where we came up with the leeches." Fell added: "We call them slugs—and ours sing." Flushed Away opens nationwide on Nov. 3.

Ugh, poor Deb (and Hugh). Honestly, I don't know why people care so much about Deb's age. People get so mean sometimes... I think I'll stay away fromt the comments section, lol. That said, the scans of Men's Vogue were wonderful. I've seen them a dozen times now, but I fall in love with them every time!

The comments can be downright nasty - they can't understand how Hugh could fall in love with someone like Deb instead of some young starlett. Plus she "dresses down" a lot when we see her in candid pictures.

Anyway - here's Hugh on the Ellen DeGeneres show on 10/20 promoting The Prestige.

Sweet! That's the night I'm seeing "Flushed Away". :woot:

Hugh was on 95.5 WPLJ radio in NY this morning doing a promo for "The Prestige." It was a phone interview (he sounded almost awake), and at the start said he wasn't able to hear most of the intro and were they saying nice things about him. They said they were...Patty Steele even yelled "WE LOVE YOU!!" rather gushingly back. So Hugh said, "Oh good, so you got the check..." :oldrazz:

So they talked about the movie a bit, and his other movies coming out this fall, and they asked about that story when he was at Showest and Clint Eastwood told him he was holding up the line. He said standing between Clint and Stallone was like being stuck in an "action hero sandwich!" which got a big laugh.

After the interview, the DJs were making jokes about how he sounded just like Brad, who's their Aussie DJ on the show (and he does sound a little like Brad!), but said "Except I don't think Hugh's walking around NY in an Elmo costume right now..." (Brad's latest spelling bee contest)

I heard that on my way to work this morning! Made that a somewhat nicer commute. :yay:

GET OFF HIM BIATCH :cmad:

sigh..... would you just look at that neck... and the face... and the lips... ok, I'll stop! Seriously, those who have seen the movie say this was a very erotic and sensual scene and I believe the shirt comes off - but Aronofsky cut out the part where Rachel took off his pants!!!! What is it with Hugh and movies - every time they even get close to him getting kinda naked, they either backlight him (XMen), put on a CGI loin cloth (Van Helsing), and now cutting the pants part of this scene! Grrrr.......

Hmmm.... Wonder what we will see in The Tourist (well, that *is* a sex club movie!).... or for that matter the Baz Luhrmann movie....

I heard it this morning too - I had my radio on in the train - static and all. I got off the train at 8:40 and was sure I would miss it since that's my luck. When I got to the office at 9:00 I put the radio on again and was shocked I got the station since I can't get some stations but I guess because it was FM it came through. Anyway, I was glad I got him at 9:14 - short but cute. Also found this - wonder if he was on any other radio shows.

9:30 - Hugh Jackman
Hugh did the usual movie promotion chatter, raving about working with David Bowie and Scarlett Johansson. But, the notable part came when they asked about his habit of losing his wedding ring several times. Apparently, he once lost one while diving. This caused Kevin to jokingly suggest that he 'punch up' this excuse to his wife a bit, and say that a stingray was trying to kill him or something. To Kevin's embarrassment, he learned afterwards that Steve Irwin had actually been a close buddy of Hugh's, and Hugh even spoke at his funeral! Doh!

Hugh Jackman, film's X-factor

The Australian actor, who got his break in 'X-Men,' is able to fit into various moviemaking equations: Animation, action, magical thriller and time-travel fantasy.
Robin Abcarian
October 29, 2006

AUSTRALIAN actor Hugh Jackman is a versatile and in-demand leading man these days. He burst to fame as Wolverine in the popular "X-Men" franchise, and in 2003 he earned raves for his Broadway musical turn as Peter Allen in "The Boy From Oz." This season, he'll have four projects in theaters: the magic thriller "The Prestige," the time-travel fantasy "The Fountain" and two animated films. In "Flushed Away," he plays a mouse, and in "Happy Feet," a penguin.

What is the difference between playing a mouse and a penguin?

Come on! This is like Brecht and Shakespeare. The differences are huuuuge.

You also once played a koala, I understand.

I worked for the National Parks and Wildlife Foundation. I was Ranger Hugh, and I had a 6-foot koala, her name was Susan.

Have you been performing your whole life?

Yeah. It took me a while to work out that this is a better way to earn money than pumping gas.

What birth order are you?

Five of five. So if you want to get some sort of psychological line into this, I was the youngest.

Always struggling for attention?

Me? What do you mean? Yes. I was.

Do you remember when Jude Law was in every single movie? Now it's you.

It's weird. I remember thinking, what was Jude thinking that he worked so hard. Now, I get it because the movies I have coming out have been 2 1/2 years in the making.

Did any of them overlap?

No. I appear much busier than I am, in truth.

Do you crave the adulation of an audience while onstage?

I don't feel that I come out there going, "Love me, love me." Might be a little bit of that in there. Must be some kind of dysfunction, otherwise I wouldn't be an actor.

Do you think it's dysfunctional to want to be loved?

Well, I think it's completely natural to want to be loved and to love. I think the dysfunction is that desire to always please, that desire to feel validated by it.

Ever had stage fright?

I never had it until I was asked to sing the Australian national anthem at the Melbourne Cricket Ground at a rugby match. It was July 26, 1997. I walked out terrified. As I got introduced to sing, there was this huge boo. This stand in front of me was filled with New Zealanders. All of a sudden, I felt like Henry V. It gave me this courage way beyond what I ever would have had. After doing that, nothing has been that scary to me again.

Here's an ignorant American reporter's question: Is the anthem "God Save the Queen"?

It used to be until about 20 years ago. It's now "Advance Australia Fair." [Singing:] Australians all let us rejoice for we are young and free.

Not "Waltzing Matilda"?

Or that, even though it's a story about a thief who ends up drowning in a pond.

Speaking of Australia, two of your countrymen, Mel Gibson and Russell Crowe, have had highly publicized bouts of bad behavior. Why haven't you?

See, when you're the youngest of five kids, you learn to do all the things that you want to do without really getting into trouble.

Do you worry about your every misstep being magnified?

I certainly don't pick my nose in public anymore.

You haven't been in rehab?

Not yet.

I had to chuckle when I learned that you have a son named Oscar.

My wife wanted the most wacky, out-there names. Like Balthazar. We were driving down from Santa Barbara and my wife went, "Oscar!" And I went, "Oscar, I love it!" That was it. So there was no thought of awards season.

You've just formed a production company. Is this simply another step in the evolution of a successful Hollywood actor?

I always believed that as an artist, you need to be proactive and not a victim. Waiting by the phone seemed like being a victim. I don't care if you are Brad Pitt or the kid from drama school. Waiting by the phone is not a good place to be.
