I bet he won't mention The Fountain which was a terrible flop... Just saw the figures on Boxofficemojo - it made $10m domestically (USA), just under $2m internationally. Yikes! Cost a meagre $35m, has made a puny $12m !!!!
Wonder if it will be tweaked for DVD release - it WAS rather choppily and badly edited! Bought the graphic novel, very nice.
Still havent seen the fountain yet, its not released here until the 16th of February, the same day as Hot Fuzz which im pretty sure will dominate the UK box office, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are comic genius.
I think i might buy the graphic novel first to get some kind of understanding of whats actually going on and then see the film whenever I get the chance,

BB, there are two cinemas still showing it in Birmingham, but probably only for the next few days. By Friday or possible Thursday, it'll be gone.

At least the film won't have cost much for prints and advertising. One of the reasons it has done so badly internationally is that Fox (yes, Fox have the overseas distrubution) went for a limited release with no advertising. They even shifted the date so anyone who wasn't paying close attention may have missed it.
I think The Fountain will still be talked about as it's unusual. It's the mediocre films that get swept under the carpet whereas one that has people voicing opinions ranging from "terrible" to "masterpiece" will always be interesting.

Exactly, it's not like he shouldn't mention The Fountain, because it was a box office flop. Who cares about that? We live in a world where Epic Movie has made nearly $30 million in a week. :whatever:
It was a flop because it went wayyyy over the heads of most of the mainstream audience (need I mention Epic Movie again?) who seem to need all of their movies spelled out for them, but like I read in one of the reviews, has seemed to pick up more fans than haters as it quickly disappeared from theaters.

I'm still trying to decide how much I like it. Probably better on second viewing and I hope to manage a third this week before it disappears. I thought the editing was good but the pacing was a bit monotonous.

The release date was changed in early December, probably as a reaction to the disappointing US opening. I've seen no advertising, other than the poster outside the cinema. Not even a trailer.
If you can manage the time, it IS still showing in Birmingham.
Yeah thanks Celestial, I checked out a couple of cinema websites and they have like a maximum of 2 showings a day which is unusual considering its only been out for what, just over a week? Even if the US opening way poor, they could have at least done some kind of basic marketing for it over here!

In my local cinema, it was only on for one week, and on the prime Saturday night, there were only six other people there, four of whom were bored (one pair playing with mobile phones, the other pair huffing and sighing on some very squeaky chairs).
A poor US reception doomed this movie. I don't know why the US has to be the testing ground for a movie.

I agree it's nice not to have the 'usual' types or massive crowds. I'm usually ill-fated to end up behind someone exceptionally tall, or with a beehive hairdo, or who has a weak bladder.
I felt sorry for the movie to be screened to such small numbers. I think it might make some of the deficit up on DVD release, but taking $12m when the budget was only a poxy $35m is not good!

That's funny. I've read the reason Universal barely bothered promoting Children of Men by the time it opened in the US was because of the lukewarm response it got in the UK. And that was one of the best movies of 2006.
Also, The Fountain got some really bad (and unfair) press when it was booed by some critics at the Venice Film Festival. Cannes passed on showing as well.
So no, it was not solely the US reception that "doomed the film." You should read up on it's history (it started out as a $75 million film starring Brad Pitt about 7 years ago) to know that the odds were fairly stacked against it before it was even released.
In fact, your cinema may have been empty...but when I saw it in NY on opening day (twice, in the afternoon, during a workday) my theater was mostly full and the audience seemed to enjoy it. And it played at that theater for over a month. The third time I saw it was at a multiplex in NJ, it was a morning show on the smallest screen in the place...and again, it was still half-full.
It's not a financial hit by any means...and we've known that for awhile. But it's not dead, either.

The theatre was pretty full when I saw Children of Men last September, but the reactions were pretty mixed. I went with two friends and they seemed a bit shell-shocked afterwards and suggested something lighter next time. A very good film, but without wide audience appeal. I think the mistake with the US was to delay it until the end of the year. They should have built on the good buzz coming from Venice.
Who knows what would have worked with The Fountain? For whatever reason, Fox chose to spend as little as possible on its UK release. I suspect that it's poor performance in France may have been as big a factor as the US.

"The Fountain" got bad press from Venice - the "booing" story made all the media reports - they tried to counter it saying there were also standing ovations but by that time I think it was too late. Then when the movie premiered the critics mauled it, although at Rotten Tomatoes it's pretty split 50/50 - but the critics who hated it REALLY hated it, and that's what got traction, and a lot of the general public listen to critics.
On another note - Hugh and Deb were at the Broadway play "Grey Gardens" on Feb. 3 - you can tell when Hugh isn't working because he usually doesn't shave!

Children of Men was pretty good - grittily realistic - but NOTHING like the book by P. D James, which is more gentle, more descriptive, more soulful, with some lovely touches (children’s playgrounds dismantled, meetings about how to preserve the relics of a dying civilisation). The movie lacked-set-up, I felt I’d been plunged into the sequel to a film I hadn’t seen (and I was one of the few who’d read the book and had a prior understanding of the basic ideas). How did people feel if they were unfamlliar with the book?! And the basic concept of the book - that men have become infertile (not, as in the movie, that women can’t carry pregnancies to full term) - was abandoned in the movie so the title made no sense. The war scenes were wonderfully realistic, and i wish those in X3 had been so edgy and gritty and not so stylised. All in all, a mixed bag of the good and the confusing.
Celestial

It's been so long since I read PD James' book that I'd missed the switch from making it a male to female problem. It seemed fairly realistic until the end - anyone who's been through childbirth knows it's not that quick or easy and there's a lot more blood. Also if a baby cries, the first thing you try is to feed it. But that would mean showing a woman breatfeeding and that would never do.

I had the exact same thought! Although I wonder if because of Nicole's "status" she would present an award by herself. But hey, they will both presumably be on the red carpet and hopefully mention the movie! But I would LOVE IT if they presented together, being introduced along the lines of "about to film their epic Australia..."
I REALLY hope one or both of them says something on the red carpet. And I bet after the show they will be jetting Down Under since filming starts in March!

DVD alert! Per Darren Aronofsky's myspace blog...The Fountain will be out on DVD in the US on May 15th.
That's the same release day as Pan's Labyrinth, so I am most definitely looking forward to that trip to Best Buy. :woot:
It's also going to include some extra features, including a 'making-of' documentary, which should be interesting. Rumor has it there won't be a commentary track, but at least it sounds like they are giving the DVD some extras after all.

Flushed Away was really funny, much more than I thought it was going to be. Between the singing slugs, the french frogs, and especially Ian McKellen camping it up as the evil Toad, my dad and I were in hysterics at the sneak preview we saw last fall. It's actually my favorite animated movie of 2006, next to Cars.

LOL! Why would they even give a male cow an udder in the first place?? Unless they assumed all cows just have them. :whatever:
I haven't seen either of those, but I was pretty disappointed with Over the Hedge. The funniest scenes were in the trailers.
I liked Cars, because it was really sweet, but it's also the first movie I've seen my two little cousins get into. They're 5 and almost 3, and they're hysterical to watch when it's on because they have to narrate the whole bloody thing.
I loved Happy Feet, because the animation and the musical sequences were fantastic, but my favorite was Flushed Away. That one was just ridiculously funny. :oldrazz:

Blame Arthur & The Invisibles. It's because they were disqualified as an animated film that it reduced the number of animated films that could be nominated.
It did win 5 Annie awards this week. Cars took the big one, but Flushed Away took the majority, including Ian McKellen for voicing the Toad. Seriously, I can't watch him do anything evil in the X-Men movies without hearing "YOU CAN'T ALL HAVE PUPPIES!!!" :oldrazz:

It won't necessarily be "awhile" - "Leap of Faith" has been announced for the 2007-2008 season, which runs from October to May (I think). So I guess it's a possiblity that if Hugh does this, he could be back on Broadway as early as the end of the year. I guess everything depends on his filming schedule.

The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which won two Tony awards in 2005, was nominated for music theatre awards including best direction and staging for MTC artistic director Simon Phillips and best female in a leading role for Marina Prior. "The Fountain" (best SF film, best special effects), and Hugh (best actor) are nominated for the Saturn Awards. It´s not the huge recognition the movie deserved, but still...The Fountain is a movie that certainly will be recognized in the future, anyway.
Meanwhile, I just have to agree with this guy here... (altough I don´t agree with the "cartoon character" diss... :o )
My Top 10 and 15 runners-up.
1. The Fountain: Writer-director Darren Aronofsky is a genius, and while his latest might not be perfect, it is definitely a bold, original, mystifying work. Hugh Jackman plays a conquistador, a doctor and an astronaut of sorts in this amazing meditation on eternal love and life. This is the performance that establishes him as a real actor rather than a cartoon character.
I've seen this film called pompous and a vanity project by many other critics. This is hilarious to me. It's almost as if Aronofsky is being punished for being more daring, smarter and brighter than most. To call this a mess because you don't get it is shameful. This is a film where the viewer must surrender to what the filmmaker is trying to accomplish, and go along on his journey.
The narrative of this movie is by no means conventional, although things do tie together a bit better upon a second viewing. The core of this film--that true love is an eternal, undying entity--is handled beautifully. That all of the pieces of the puzzle might not fit together perfectly is a moot point. Aronofsky tried to tackle the entire universe with his movie, and I'm amazed by how much he has succeeded.
Besides all that, the film looks better than anything put to screen this year and has a score to die for. It's 2006's best picture.

Who the heck knows - he's doing a workshop of "Leap of Faith" in a few weeks which is scheduled for the 2007-2008 Broadway season (I'm assuming this "2008" is the 2008-2009 season). And it's funny that his movie "Australia" is decribed as the "Australian Gone with the Wind." With his schedule this may just be wishful thinking, but who knows what Hugh has in mind - it does say "DESIRED" star - I think he's wanted for every musical that hits Broadway. He was also rumored to be wanted for "Young Frankenstein."

Hugh Jackman Eyed for 'Gone With the Wind' Broadway Role

'Gone With the Wind' Remake; 'Dreamgirls' Lawsuit Avoided; Pre-Oscar Partying; Hollywood Swinging
'Gone With the Wind' Musical Coming
Get ready: A musical based on Margaret Mitchell’s novel “Gone with the Wind” is being prepared for Broadway.
I’m told that a group of producers have secured the rights from the Mitchell estate and are proceeding toward a 2008 production. The big desired star to play Rhett Butler: Hugh Jackman.
I’m also told that producers are interested in Jill Pace, an American actress who co-starred in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Woman in White,” to play Scarlett O’Hara. Pace, a popular up-and-comer, is said to resemble Vivien Leigh. The show would have its birth in London’s West End.
As it’s planned now, this version of “Gone with the Wind” will adhere to the novel more than the well-known film, still considered the all-time box office champ based on adjusted figures from 1939.
That means that this “GWTW” will be a little darker than remembered, with the story told through the eyes of the slaves at Tara.
“If you remember, Scarlett is really left with the slaves, and they become her family,” a production insider says. “That will be more of the emphasis of the story, with Rhett more of a darker, more complicated character.”
“Gone with the Wind” has somehow avoided being turned into a musical all these many years. There have been parodies — think Carol Burnett — and recently a play about the casting of the movie, but until now the Mitchell estate has never allowed this prized possession to be set to music.

Eh, I wouldn't read too much into that...that column on Fox news isn't very reliable, and it's basically saying the producers want him to play that role, not that he's involved...and after BFO, those producers want him involved in everything.
I do hope he comes back to Broadway sooner than later...ever since I saw Spring Awakening on Broadway last week (AMAZING!) I'm on a total musicals kick again. Come back, Hugh!! :woot:

I'm kinda convinced he's doing "Leap of Faith" since he's doing the workshop and I know he's had input on this all the way back to when he was filming X3. It's already been announced for the 2007/2008 season - I wonder if he does do it, it's after he films "Wolverine" (assuming it's right after "Australia").

Leap of Faith sounds much more likely, especially since it's confirmed that he's actually involved with that project. The other show sounds like they're just dropping names.
They seriously want to open a musical version of Gone With the Wind in 2008 and they don't even have a composer yet? Good luck with that. :whatever:

I agree it was boring - I can't believe Ellen in the beginning was so BLAH IMO. I know some liked it, but not me. They haven't done big musical numbers in a while - hey I know - have Hugh perform LOL (yeah, right, that'll happen). I really think Jerry Seinfeld was auditioning for next year - I thought he was funnier than Ellen - although Ellen's bit with Eastwood in the audience with the camera I thought was hilarious. The telecast was just over 3-1/2 hrs. which is kinda normal.
Hugh and Penelope Cruz came on at 11:06 - right after a commercial. And how gentlemanly was Hugh to offer Penelope his arm go TO the podium and then LEAVING the podium??? And was that the LAMEST introduction? "...a nominee for "Volver" and the Volver-ine himself..."
I was disappointed not to see him on the red carpet but I think he was at the Vanity Fair party before the Oscars.

I'm so glad I was in the middle of my speech of how unfair it was that Hugh wasn't nominated and missed that intro. Hell, I didn't even realize Babel had won until they were making their acceptance speech...probably because I was in the middle my other speech about how The Fountain should have gotten a score nomination.

I truthfully missed the introduction also - I read it on other MBs and then re-watched my tape. I honestly thought Pan's Labyrinth had won. Then I saw Babel along the bottom of the screen and immediately told everyone in the room how overrated I thought that movie was.

I'm guessing they paired her up with Daniel since they are appearing in the movie "Invasion" at the end of the year. The height difference:

The Golden Compass rather than Invasion as it's likely to be one of big films of late 2007. I read that it was mentioned in their introduction at the Oscars.
The pairing of Craig with Kidman looks a bit unfortunate in that picture. It reminds me of the X3 Berlin photocall where Hugh and Famke were well matched and (in comparison) Halle looked out of place - not something I imagine happens too often!

I started watching TNT, because Globo was late, as always. Then I started changing from one to the other...it´s something that annoys the hell out of my mother! :woot:
When I heard the "Volver-ine" introduction, I was watching TNT. I didn´t know it was from the real introduction, I though it was a joke made by the translator! Sometimes I watch awards like that with the original sound, but my mother was watching with me, and she doesn´t understand English.

the Globo transmition didn't translate the intros. God, Globo sucks at transmitting Oscars. The translator simply didn't understand a word of what Robert Downer Jr said. The whole theater was coming to laughter, and no one could know what he said, because the translator was there, silent. And we couldn't even hear the original line, since Maria Beltrão was talking to break the translator's silence.
Jose Wilker sucks too. I hate him and his pretension to criticize any actor when he's nothing extraordinaire. I prefered when even SBT aired it, at least we got Rubens Ewald. Now he's on TNT. Another thing was that SBT actually had one translator for the men and another for women, way more organized.
But I like Maria Beltrão a lot. Since I watched one interview of hers on Jô Soares. She was hilarious :p

Had a cool sighting today. I was at the comics store near where I work, and talking to the guy working the register was Marc Cerasini, who wrote the Wolverine: Weapon X novel.
So me and the guy in front of me did our best job eavesdropping (which wasn't hard, since they were the loudest people in the store :oldrazz: ), and he was saying that he's writing on the sequel to Weapon X right now!

Viva Laughlin! Filming to close Casino Drive
Wednesday, March 7, 2007 8:26 PM PST
Daily News staff
LAUGHLIN - Parts of Casino Drive will be closed intermittently Friday afternoon and evening as film crews shoot footage for a television pilot “Viva Laughlin!”
Based on a BBC miniseries “Viva Blackpool!” the musical will focus on a fictional family running a Laughlin casino.
The program will be produced by Hugh Jackman and developed for CBS. Jackman is set to guest star in the pilot and other episodes, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police will close parts of Casino Drive intermittently between 1:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. Friday from the Riverside Resort to Harrah's.
Officers will be on hand to direct traffic around the closed areas. Motorists are urged to use alternate routes during these hours to avoid traffic congestion.
Looks like Hugh is playing the "big cheese" - the guy that founded the town!
http://www.frommers.com/articles/4258.html
snip
The city slickers up in Las Vegas used to turn up their noses at Laughlin, the town about 80 miles south, when the little burg began to try to lure visitors there and away from The Strip. But for a place that didn't exist 43 years ago, Laughlin has come a long way, baby.
It was back in 1964 that a former Vegas nightclub owner, Don Laughlin, flew over the place and decided to buy a boarded-up motel and six acres on the riverfront in South Pointe, opposite Bullhead City, Arizona, for $250,000. In less than two years, the motel offered all-you-can-eat chicken dinners for 98 cents, 12 slot machines, two live gaming tables and four rooms to sleep in. (The Laughlin family bunked in the property's other four bedrooms.)
Now, there are nine big casino resorts, outlet shopping, several good golf courses, annual rodeos, a SCORE racing car series, and nightclub entertainers the likes of Willie Nelson, The Beach Boys, Wayne Newton (of course) and ZZ Top, to mention only a few of the town's attractions. And to top it all, CBS pilot film crews at the Aquarius are shooting right now for a musical TV series called Viva Laughlin, based on the huge British hit, Viva Blackpool. (Blackpool has been a put-upon resort town for years and the butt of thousands of jokes about its provincial character in British comedies.) Hugh Jackman will play the part of Don Laughlin. (Mr. Laughlin is still active in town and casino affairs, and if you can't manage to meet him in person, you can shake hands with his life-size statue at the entrance to the town's own Strip of casinos.)

And talking about comics, have you read "Wolverine - Netsuke", danoyse? It´s one of my favorite Logan stories, and the art is so beautiful. Another one that I love is "Elektra & Wolverine - The Redeemer". Okay, it´s more an Elektra story in the end, but the art is absolutely amazing! And Greg Rucka, the author, wrote one of the best "Wolverine" recent runs. Too bad it only lasted for a year.
Hey, I thought we didn't know anything about comics?! :whatever: :oldrazz:
Actually, I've never read either of those, so I'll have to check them out. Right now I've just been following Origins (which looks like it's finally getting somewhere) and I've been reading the regular Wolverine series since the Civil War arc, so I need to catch up!!
Oh, don´t forget to tell us what you thought about the book...if it´s good I´ll certainly buy it! I love reading Wolverine in any literary form! :woot:
I'm about 130 pages in, and it's pretty good. It takes place in the present, but his memory is totally gone, but he finds a picture from WWII that he was in, and it flashes back to a mission where he ultimately ended up in a concentration camp trying to find this girl's brother. Plus there's a crazy Nazi scientist who is trying to create this indestructible army who is still alive in the present day. Not sure how it happens yet, but he used some part of Logan's DNA to stay the same age the last 60 years.
I have a feeling they're not going to get along when they meet again. :wow:
He's also going by James "Patch" Howlett in the WWII sequences, which is pretty cool.
As for Cap... :wow:
That was so sad! I don't think he's gone, though.

I think you´ll be able to find them at your comic book shop. I´ll post some scans of the art from Netsuke and Redeemer in the next post!
The Greg Rucka run was pretty good, because he really can write Logan as a solo character. No X-Men (altough Kurt makes a cameo, and Sabretooth plays an important role in the last part), no Avengers, no costume, no mask...it was more "Logan" than "Wolverine". The artist was pretty good, but he draw one of the ugliest Logans I have ever seen! :wow:
But I don´t read the comics expecting to see a Hugh Jackman lookalike, as some (*cough*LS*cough*) may think... :whatever:
I'm about 130 pages in, and it's pretty good.
Wow, it does sound really good! I wanna read it too, and the other one by David Mack.
It´s nice to see Marvel investing in novels like this. Maybe they learned something from the success of fanfiction! :word:

Could be, but I don´t know...Ultimate is quite a different universe, but maybe he saved some ideas he had back then for this book. Actually, the idea of Logan going to Japan in Ulti was quite weird, it had nothing to do with what defined the character in that universe; maybe that´s why it wasn´t used, and Mack never wrote for Ultimate X-Men.
It would be really nice if he developed a Wolverine book with his own illustrations...check out his art when you have the time (just google david mack), it´s gorgeous!

Finally some confirmed dates for filming of "Australia" - it was reported somewhere else that Hugh was going to be in Australia next week so if that's true wonder what he's doing between then and May 14 (possibly filming in Sydney? Rehearsals? Learning to ride a horse and drove cattle???).
The Bowen Independant Wednesday March 14th
MOVIE ACTION READY TO ROLL
by Charles Cepulis
A small crew of construction people next week will help launch Bowen into the big-time movie world when work starts to turn two blocks of land at Bowens Front Beach into a film set.
The two scooped-out blocks, between Herbert Street and The Villiage Life, and the main wharf are to be used for Darwin scenes in the Baz Luhrmann romance epic Australia, featuring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman.
"The Herbert side of the block will be cattle yards, and the other half will be Darwin's Chinatown circa 1938,"location manager Carl Wood said yesterday.
"We will be forming a roadway on the boundry of the two blocks."he said.
Shooting of the movie in Bowen has been scheduled from May 14th to June 30 .
"After the initial crew of four or five arrive next week, numbers will buildup over the next few weeks as we build more and more."Mr wood said.
"The movie will involve anywhere between 250 to 350 people all up,"he said.
Mr Wood, who is now based in Bowen, has been involved with many notable movies, including Superman returns, Stealth , Kangaroo Jack, Birthday Girl - which also starred Nicole Kidman- and Matrix.
While the sets will be closed during filming, there may be some access for the public.
"We are toying with the idea - and we are not sure yet - of having a viewing area."Mr Wood said.
"Where that will be we can't really tell, and it may not be the same spot all the time,"he said.
But Mr Wood warned watching films being made was "a lot like watching paint dry - there are often long periods of inactivity."
When construction begins at the Front Beach blocks, Security fencing will be exteded all around.
And Mr wood said while there had been of doing some filming in the CBD area of Herbert Street, it was now expected most of the filming will be confined to the waterfront area, between Santa Barbara Parade and Herbert Street.
Some power lines in the area would need to be removed.
It is expected there would be limited interuption to traffic, but any Street closures would be advertised in advance, and buisinesses would not be affected.
The old Harbour Master Building is also expected to be used to film from, as well as being part of the films background.
"It fits in with our period, and from the top balcony it commands a good view of the location."Mr Wood said.
The Hinterland of Darwin today was "just too modernised" to be used in the movie.
"So we got got Darwin down here, and perhaps 60 metres of the causeway,"Mr Wood said
After shooting is finished there will be movie people in town for another 2 weeks"getting things back to narmal."

So according to this, we will find out in mid-May whether we will ever see Hugh in a TV show - whether or not his pilot gets "picked up":

"Viva Laughlin!"
That's the tentative name for the CBS Paramount Network Television series pilot with the $250 million Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in the backdrop.
Morongo Band of Mission Indian officials on Thursday confirmed scenes for the pilot featuring Australian heartthrob Hugh Jackman were shot at the casino within the past week.
"The crew packed up and left this morning,'' Morongo's sales director Michael Potts said.
Los Angeles-based Sony Pictures Television spokes-woman Karen Barragan said the production company and Jackman, who is the executive producer of the show, will learn in mid-May if "Viva Laughlin!" has been picked up.
The pilot is an American adaptation of the BBC series "Blackpool." The American version is a story about a low-rent casino owner who wants to open a glitzy resort in Laughlin, Nev.
Potts said the script is riddled with David and Goliath twists and turns. And there are gambling scenes.
Four scenes were shot over two days: Cameras rolled on the casino floor, in the Key Club nightclub and at the casino's main entrance at night.
Roughly 300 crew members and extras were here for the shoot. Potts said the stay included bookings averaging 140 rooms a night.
"If the series gets picked up, there's a good chance more interior shots will be filmed,'' Potts said.www.thedesertsun.com/apps...3/business (http://www.thedesertsun.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070316/NEWS06/703160345/1003/business)Morongo becomes hot spot to shoot in film industry

Since its opening in 2004, the Morongo Casino Resort and Spa has hosted plenty of stars - and through the work of resort managers, it's becoming something of a star location for the film industry.
Sheri Davis, director of the Inland Empire Film Commission, said resort sales director Michael Potts and the Morongo Band of Mission Indians have been instrumental in putting a spotlight on the Inland Empire within the film industry.
Viva Laughlin! is the latest project to do just that. The CBS Paramount Network Television series pilot features the $250 million Morongo Casino Resort & Spa in the backdrop.
Morongo Band of Mission Indian officials on Thursday confirmed scenes for the pilot featuring Australian heartthrob Hugh Jackman were shot at the casino within the past week.
It gives the valley incredible cachet, Davis said. "This particular show was scouted for two months or more."
VIVA LAUGHLIN! IN PRODUCTION
- An American adaptation of the BBC series "Blackpool."
- Produced by CBS Paramount Network Television in association with Sony Pictures Television for CBS.
- Hugh Jackman executive produces and guest stars in Viva Laughlin!, a murder mystery/musical about a low-rent casino owner who wants to open a glitzy resort in Laughlin, Nevada.
- Lloyd Owen, Madchen Amick, PJ Byrne, Eric Winter, DB Woodside, Ellen Woglom and Carter Jenkins star in the pilot, while Melanie Griffith appears as a guest star.
- Those with hand in the pilot include: Jackman, as an executive producer along with Bob Lowry ("Huff") , John Palermo ("X-Men") , Paul Telegdy ("You're The One That I Want") , Peter Bowker ("Viva Blackpool") , and Gabriele Muccino ("Pursuit of Happyness), who also directs the pilot.

Jackman in Oz for new movie with Kidman
By 7News
Aussie actor Hugh Jackman flew in from the US this morning to prepare for his new movie with Nicole Kidman.
The star, and his actress wife Deborah Lee-Furness, had a bite to eat and did some shopping in the rocks with their two adopted children Oscar and Ava.
Shooting for his new film, Australia, begins shooting next month.
Nicole Kidman is expected to arrive in Sydney for pre-production on the film next week.

Definitely. They're all starting to remind me of Dwight on the American version of The Office. Last week, they were at an office party and he asked someone if they watched Battlestar Galactica. When he said no, Dwight said "Then you're an IDIOT." and stormed off. Remind you of anyone?? :cwink:
I picked up David Mack's Wolverine novel yesterday, and I had such a great conversation with the guy at the store about the different X-Men books and movies. It was fun...there was no angry over X3 crap, it was just a fun conversation. It is possible.

That's cool! Here we either color real eggs and decorate them, or we have plastic eggs that we open up and stash little toys inside of them. We hide them, so the kids can go hunting for them. Hugh Jackman and Deborah-Lee Furness (and family) photographed in “The Rocks”, Sydney, Australia on March 25, 2007. You wouldn’t have known it was them were it not for the nearby paparazzi photographers.
Main page story:
Today’s “Daily Telegraph” there’s a report that Hugh Jackman and Deborah-Lee Furness (and family) arrived at Sydney Airport yesterday. While Hugh works on a new film, the Tele reports they will spend the next six months living in Australia. It didn’t take today’s Tele to tell me they were in Australia, however, having spotted them walking along George Street in “The Rocks” yesterday. I was walking along with my friends Graeme and Grant when, suddenly, we noticed the presence of three “paparazzi” photographers with their trademark long-lens zoom cameras. None of us had ever seen anything like this before in Sydney, so we instantly assumed it might have been Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban. It’s a well-publicised fact that Nicole has remained in the United States while Keith has been back in Australia on a promotional tour. But no, it was just plain old Hugh and Deborah. “Maybe she’s pregnant?”, Grant wondered, curious as to why there would be paparazzi dodging and weaving behind lamp-posts on the other side of the street for a shot of Deborah and Hugh. “Maybe they were on the verge of divorcing, but are now back together?”, I proffered as a possible explanation. But no, it’s not that exciting, though it gave me the opportunity to take my own paparazzi-style photograph.

I was amused by the quote that narrows found:
I was walking along with my friends Graeme and Grant when, suddenly, we noticed the presence of three “paparazzi” photographers with their trademark long-lens zoom cameras. None of us had ever seen anything like this before in Sydney, so we instantly assumed it might have been Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban...
Why would anyone be interested in photos of Hugh Jackman? It's not like he's famous or anything. Who wants to see his ugly mug plastered across the tabloids?
Seriously, I'm sure the paparazzi are going to get pretty bored soon, as he's making it too easy. Which is probably the plan.
Wow, Ava is growing up so fast
So is Oscar for that matter :wow:

Gavin Lee is still playing Bert, and he was amazing! I saw in his bio that he was in Oklahoma! too, and I was wondering if it was the same production, since I didn't recall seeing him on the DVD. I'm listening to the London cast recording now, and it doesn't sound like they changed too much for NY, except I think they toned down "Temper Temper" a bit.
I haven't been to London since 1998--when I had a chance to see Oklahoma and didn't. I'm still kicking myself over that one. :csad:

The Bowen epic
JOHN ANDERSEN (andersenj@nqn.newsltd.com.au)
03Apr07
AUSTRALIAN film producer Baz Luhrmann doesn't hide the fact that he wants his movie Australia, due to start production in Bowen next month, to take the world by storm.
He wants it to go all the way and by that he means straight up the red carpet to Hollywood's Academy Awards and Oscar glory.
And if that happens it could mean a tourism stampede for Bowen.
The famous movie maker, with hits like Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet and Strictly Ballroom under his belt, is staking a lot on the $130 million Australia becoming a worldwide hit.
Asked if the movie was going to be the great Australian cinematic epic, he replied that there were no guarantees. But, clearly, he is hoping to create a masterpiece, a love story surrounded and embellished by the vast beauty of the outback and the mayhem of wartime Darwin.
"'I can't guarantee that (it will be the great Austraian epic). I'm reaching out. We're all reaching out. I've got the best actors and the best crew. This is the Olympics of cinema and we are going for gold," he said.
Parts of the movie being shot in Bowen are meant to represent Darwin in the 1920s-1940s. Bowen, with its long timber wharf and undeveloped esplanade, is providing the perfect place to build a faux Darwin waterfront.
The potential for Bowen and Queensland to benefit from the movie if it becomes a worldwide success is not lost on Mr Luhrmann. Yesterday he pointed to a spot near the wharf to be called Australia Point in the movie.
It is here at Australia Point where the characters played by Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman will meet for the first time in the film.
Mr Luhrmann said he was still looking for extras including Chinese, Japanese, Aborigines, soldiers and experienced stockmen.
"We need great soldiers, great cattlemen, people who can really ride. We need every shape and form that made up Australia at that time. We are looking for Aboriginal extras and we have to match them with the world we are creating in Darwin," he said.
Cattle yards are being constructed in front of the wharf and some of the timber posts being used have come from the old timber stockyard next to the Strathmore Station homestead outside Collinsville. Mr Luhrman is planning on having more than 2000 cattle down on the wharf area.
"In those days the Darwin cattle yards ran right on to the wharf. There's a scene here with over 2000 cattle on the wharf and we're driving cattle up on to big military ships," he said.
He said he felt confident about finding top notch stockmen and added that the greater Bowen area extending out into the western hinterland was a legendary area for stockmen and women.
"When you think about where the Stockman's Hall of Fame is, there is no doubt that this is an important place in the story of the Australian cattleman. We're excited about that," he said.
It is still not clear if the film's leading lights will be staying in Bowen while filming takes place. Mr Luhrmann said it was not easy to find accommodation for everyone.
"Accommodation is one of our great issues. We're still looking for people who will rent out houses. We're still looking for housing," he said.
He said Australia, because of its logistic demands, was becoming a collaboration between himself and the people of Bowen and to a wide extent, the people of Queensland.
"It's an enormous undertaking. It has to be a collaboration," he said.
He is struggling to find enough extras to act as World War Two soldiers.
Asked if he had contacted the Department of Defence to see if soldiers from Townsville's Lavarack Barracks could be made available, he said: "Actually I've got to say we have not clarified all of that yet, but I know Premier Beattie has been extraordinarily supportive and I've had several meetings with him," he said.
Mr Luhrmann said special days would be set aside during filming to allow tourists to watch production from public galleries. He said bus tours would be conducted from centres such as Mackay and Townsville.

Kidman back in saddle
Sandy George, Film writer
April 12, 2007
PEOPLE riding horses around Sydney's Centennial Park is an everyday event; Nicole Kidman being one of them is not.
Equestrian skills figure highly in her role as an aristocratic Englishwoman in Baz Luhrmann's epic romance Australia and yesterday she got in some practice.
She looked more like a contestant in a dressage event, however, than a woman pushed to the limits of her physical and emotional endurance in Australia's outback 60 years ago.
Rehearsals and other preparations have been under way at Fox Studios Australia, next to Centennial Park in Sydney's inner-eastern suburbs, for weeks.
It is believed that cameras roll on the long-awaited film - it was originally going to start shooting this time last year - on April 27.
Cast and crew will warm up at several Sydney locations before heading for northern Australia for five months.
Earlier this week, Kidman's minders scotched persistent rumours she was pregnant when publicist Wendy Day said: "She's looking forward to going outback and riding a horse and being here for seven months making a film."
Australia opens with Kidman's character journeying halfway around the world to confront her philandering husband.
Instead, she finds him dead, and that leaves her in control of a huge cattle station.
Hugh Jackman plays a rough stockman as cut off from the world as she is until they fall for each other.
Luhrmann and Kidman last worked together on Moulin Rouge, which was set in the Paris club scene early last century.
Australia takes place partly in Darwin but mostly in vast landscapes, which will amplify the drama in the same way that the desert gave Lawrence of Arabia an epic quality.
Locations include Kununurra in Western Australia and Bowen in Queensland. Twentieth Century Fox is footing the bill, which is believed to be more than $100million.

That's the rumor, but I've seen other budget quotes as well. Also, the state government in Western Australia kicked in some money - here's a report from November (the March date is now April):

Baz sees the big picture in Australian landscape
Sandy George, Film writer
November 23, 2006
DIRECTOR Baz Luhrmann's next film is to be called, simply, Australia.
"I couldn't take the title away if I tried because it named itself," said Luhrmann. The film is a grand romance starring Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman but, in the tradition of Casablanca and the television series Dallas, the setting is integral.
The backdrop for Luhrmann's film is the cattle industry in the 1930s and Darwin before and after it was attacked by the Japanese in World War II.
"The film is not didactically about this country - the title represents the main character's journey, her state of mind," said Luhrmann from his base in Sydney's inner-city Darlinghurst.
Cameras will roll for five months from March. As was the case with his previous two films - Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge - the key backer is 20thCentury Fox.
Kidman plays Lady Sarah Ashley, a highly strung English aristocrat, who arrives in Australia to find her cad of a husband dead and her only assets a piece of land the size of Belgium and thousands of cattle.
As she drives the cattle overland to sell in Darwin, her disdain for the rough drover at her side (Jackman), and for the country, disappears. "That land which seemed brutal and foreboding is now achingly beautiful, and, through the way she starts to relate to that land, she comes alive and finds her inner strength," said Luhrmann.
Landscape will amplify the drama and emotion of the story in a way not seen in film for some time because of cost, technical challenges and its perceived lack of appeal to 17-year-old boys.
Luhrmann would not comment on the budget but it is understood to be just under $US100million ($130million), making it the most expensive Australian story committed to the big screen.
At least four weeks of the five-month shoot will happen near Kununurra in northern Western Australia, with the state Government contributing $500,000.
Luhrmann emphasised the tourism benefits of two of Australia's biggest stars acting against its landscapes and said he was negotiating with other governments.
He said the films The Overlanders and Giant had inspired Australia and also, in the "magnificent" way it used the landscape, Jedda. But the biggest influence, he said, was Leo Tolstoy's novel War and Peace.
Luhrmann will gather his main cast, including an indigenous boy who will play the third key character, for a workshop in Sydney next month. They will have riding lessons, script discussions and work on costumes.
Luhrmann said he was surprised by what the two years of research unearthed.
"Darwin was attacked 64 times in six months ... The government (disguised) the truth: 2000 whites were killed and non-whites were not counted, so the toll was far greater," he said. "But everything in the film will be in service to a great romance ... Facts will be moved around but not in a way that fundamentally disturbs the truth."

Here's my interpretation - I watched the movie 5 times and I think I have it all figured out!
Yes, he dies and he is recreated in a different spot, but I don't think he remembers the drowning since I think he is recreated BEFORE the other is drowned. Remember at the end Cutter says to him "I told you the sailor told me drowning was like going home - I lied. He said it was agony." It was then Angier realizes that every time "the man in the box" died, it wasn't peaceful like he thought (which is why I think he picked drowning for the one on stage), it was a painful death.
How did you like Hugh as Root? ROTFL!

Yeah, there have been stories online that it has a good chance. I figured as much since I think it was a "put pilot" - from Wikipedia:
A "put pilot" is an agreement between a network and a studio, where the network will incur substantial penalties if the pilot episode is not aired. This is a virtual guarantee that a pilot will be picked up.
CBS announces it's fall schedule on May 16.

You have to love a mate like Hugh Jackman.
Jackman, who will start work on Baz Luhrmann's new film Australia tomorrow, hosted a two-day bucks party for his close mate and personal trainer Michael Ryan on the Gold Coast.
After spending a "blokes day" zooming around the Porsche Experience Driving Centre at Mt Cotton on Friday afternoon, Jackman, Ryan and a gaggle of more than 40 friends headed off on an evening cruise, followed by dinner that evening.
They broke with bucks night tradition by inviting women – wives and girlfriends – to the pre-wedding bash.
Ryan, who helped support Jackman in his student days and became the star's trainer for the X-Men movies and Van Helsing, will wed Zoe Bingley-Pullen in Sydney on May 19.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i53270960c7c27f1c766156076407325a
A rumored CBS schedule, which made the rounds Thursday, includes the untitled Cynthia Cidre drama pilot landing the Thursday 10 p.m. time slot and "Shark" moving to the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour.
With its paranormal theme, "Babylon Fields" could be a good fit after "Ghost Whisperer" on Friday, while murder mystery-musical "Viva Laughlin" might kick off the network's Wednesday crime lineup of "Criminal Minds" and "CSI: NY."
And "Australia" is kicking into high gear - filming starts in Bowen on Monday and there's TONS of info all over the Australian media following every step of this movie. See the town here:

Q: Are you still in touch with Hugh Jackman and what's he really like? - Audrey
A: We communicate through e-mails every now and then. I reach out on his birthday, he reaches out on my birthday, I will check on him and his family every now and again but he's a busy man and I do miss him. His work ethic was incredible, his generosity was incredible, his dressing room door was always open and he's just one of the greatest human beings I've ever met. So I do miss him greatly.

On another note, "Viva Laughlin!", the show where Hugh is a producer, has been picked up by CBS - Hugh guest-stars in the first episode. We will find out tomorrow when it airs when CBS makes its fall announcement.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3id38c37b9af98234aa327afd9aef11f64
CBS is swinging for the fences on the drama side and staying close to tradition on the comedy side.
On Monday, the network picked up four drama pilots to series: the musical mystery "Viva Laughlin," the partner-swapping period drama "Swingtown," the vampire crime drama "Moonlight" and the Latin family drama "Cane."
***
CBS' drama picks deliver on the network's promise going into the development season that it would step outside the CBS comfort zone of procedurals to go for bold, risky, noisy shows.
"Laughlin," from Sony Pictures TV, BBC Worldwide Prods. and CBS Paramount Network TV, stars Lloyd Owen as a family man who dreams of opening a casino in Laughlin, Nev.

CBS Lineup to Offer Vampires and a Mystery With Singing Casino Workers
CBS will follow its stated goal of taking its prime-time schedule in unexpected directions with fall series hopefuls exploring unusual themes like vampires, swingers and even singing casino workers.
The series with those casino workers may get the most attention because it brings the film star Hugh Jackman (http://movies2.nytimes.com/gst/movies/filmography.html?p_id=269258&inline=nyt-per) (“X-Men”) to television as both executive producer and occasional star of “Viva Laughlin,” a drama about a Nevada gambler who seeks help from an old enemy (Mr. Jackman) to buy a casino.
The show becomes a murder mystery as well, but the standout feature is likely to be the inclusion of some moments when characters will lip-sync contemporary songs — not, CBS emphasizes, the way songs were used in the old ABC series “Cop Rock,” but more in the style of the British series “Pennies From Heaven.”
Based on the British show “Viva Blackpool,” it also starts Mädchen Amick (“ER”) and Lloyd Owen (“The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”) as the gambler.

Yes I'm aware that it's based on a successful British show but you can't use that as a barometer (remember "Coupling") Television choices in England are notoriously limited, therefore what equates as successful over there is a different standard than American TV. Here shows get cancelled after one or two episodes.
But I hope it is a hit because I'd love to see Hugh on a semi-regular basis.

Here's the description:
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/tvnews.php?id=20429
Executive produced by Tony and Emmy Award winner Hugh Jackman ("The Boy from Oz," "X-Men"), VIVA LAUGHLIN is a mystery drama with music about eternal optimist and freewheeling businessman Ripley Holden, whose sole ambition is to run a casino in Laughlin, Nev. Occasionally using upbeat contemporary songs to accentuate the drama and humor and advance the story, the series is based on the hit BBC show "Viva Blackpool." Ripley (Lloyd Owen, "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles") is the ultimate gambler with an infectious personality who is on the brink of making a killing... just as soon as he opens his casino that's nowhere near completion. When his financing suddenly falls through, the fearless and tenacious Ripley approaches his enemy - dashing, sarcastic, wealthy casino owner Nicky Fontana (Hugh Jackman) for help. Though the odds are stacked against him, Ripley doesn't miss a beat, even when he becomes embroiled in a murder investigation after the body of his ex-business partner is found at his club. At home, Ripley uses his dry wit to adjust to the demands of his family: his gorgeous wife, Natalie (Madchen Amick, "ER"), wants more attention; his teenage daughter, Cheyenne (Ellen Woglom, "The O.C."), wants his approval; and his son, Jack (Carter Jenkins, "Surface"), wants to help him at work. All of this adversity would defeat a lesser man, but for the outgoing and passionate Ripley there's no such thing as bad news, only deals to be struck and wagers to be won in the intoxicating neon glow of Laughlin, where the cards are on the table, romance is in the air and lively music is on the stage. Eric Winter ("Wildfire") and D.B. Woodside ("24") also star. Directed by Gabriele Muccino ("The Pursuit of Happyness"). Golden Globe Award nominee Hugh Jackman, John Palermo ("X-Men: The Last Stand"), Bob Lowry ("Huff"), Paul Telegdy and Peter Bowker ("Viva Blackpool") are executive producers for BBC Worldwide Productions, Seed Productions, CBS Paramount Network Television in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Yes I'm aware that it's based on a successful British show but you can't use that as a barometer (remember "Coupling") .
I think narrows was agreeing with you.
Look at The Office. While it's never been a ratings blockbuster--and I think it's only one of 2 comedy series left on NBC, which is why they ordered so many episodes next season, but it's still a successful translation of a BBC show.
You never know...I'm curious to see how it goes. Network TV is vicious (I had to break it to my dad that CBS also cancelled "Jericho"), so I don't give anything long. I almost think it would have a better chance as a cable series.
I think I'm more mystified that they picked up a vampire series as well.

"Meet & Greet" with Bowen volunteers on the set of "Australia" (no comment how wonderfully that shirt fits him or the arms and chest):

I wasn't crazy about the clips, either. The trailer on the CBS upfront site that narrows posted was much better, though.
A few people I work with saw commercials for it on CBS last night and seemed to like it as well. So who knows? I don't keep high hopes for network TV, but it would be pretty cool if the show does well. :yay:

I think the X3 hair was because his own hair hadn't grown out long enough - he had it shaved for The Fountain in February and X3 started filming in August. I think for his own movie he'll be fine.
He took a break from filming "Australia" to be best man at his personal trainer Michael Ryan's wedding - I think that's the guy that got him in shape for the X-Men movies. Tons of more great pictures in the gallery.

Jackman plays best man Jonathon Moran
May 19, 2007 02:00pm
HUGH Jackman took a supporting role as best man at his mate's wedding yesterday.
Jackman was the right-hand man for his personal trainer and groom-to-be Michael Ryan.
The actor was among four groomsmen who arrived at St Mark's sandstone church in Sydney's east in a done-up, pastel-green Kombi van.
"I am very proud to be best man to this guy,'' Jackman said.
"It is going to be a very exciting day and there are lots of surprises he doesn't know about.''
Taking the day off from making Baz Luhrmann's epic film Australia in Far North Queensland with Nicole Kidman, Jackman was unshaven, proof of his role as a cattle drover in the $100 million-plus action-adventure.
But he cut a dashing figure in a charcoal grey pinstripe suit, crisp white shirt and cream tie.
The groom was all smiles as he mingled with guests before the service.
"I am very excited at the moment and loving life,'' he said.
The traditional church service, with a wedding march and bells ringing, had a twist.
Jackman was partnered with bride Zoe Bingley-Pullen's man of honour, Rodney Jamieson.
Jackman described the match as "modern'', while his wife, Deborra-lee Furness, said, "It was very Peter Allen'' -- a tribute to her husband's role in The Boy From Oz stage musical.More pics:

Hugh is on my "Google Alert" list plus stuff is also posted on other Hugh-fan message boards.
Here's a great video - this is from 1996, when Hugh was 27/28 years old (he looks so YOUNG in this video!) and appearing in Australia in the musical "Sunset Blvd." as Joe Gillis. It's from an Australian TV show called "Hey Hey It's Sunday" and he's singing the title song. This was before he ever came to Hollywood.

Wow, I've seen the Prestige today... amazing... Fully recommended- the plot almost reminds me of a Hitchcock movie
Oh and Hugh Jackman & David Bowie   Two cherries on a pie ^_^
(Just in case)
There's something about the end I didn't understand... Is that bolts machine a clone creator? That was weird... I mean, the whole movie was always using logic ¿?

Yep, it is. I was so glad I figured out Bale had a twin in the restaurant scene...though the movie kinda lost its magic from that moment on, since I figured the big mistery way before I was supposed to.

Haha, really? How? You even figured the clone thingy?
Though my problem is that I was paying too much attention on understanding them- they were always whispering, damn. I'm so used at Spanish translators, they scream and overexaggerate their voices lol

I knew most of the secrets before I saw The Prestige because I'd read the book first. It didn't really spoil it, it just made it more fun to catch all the twists as the story went along. It's a really good movie. :woot:
That Sunset clip is great. I saw Beauty & The Beast on Broadway last night, and we were totally cracking up at Gaston...we could so what picture what Hugh must have been like when he played the role. :oldrazz:

Yes, he played Gaston in the Australian production...in 1995, I think? I have the cast recording, he was really funny. It's basically a role for a total ham, so it fits Hugh perfectly. :oldrazz:
