I don´t know...if there´s one of Hugh´s projects I´m not excited about is If You Could See Me Now. It´s just that the story seems so silly and childish...too much like a Disney movie for my taste. I would rather see him doing a movie version of the Sunset Boulevard musical...
But as for 2006...gods, I can´t wait! X3, The Prestige, The Fountain, Scoop (yeah, I like Woody Allen...not always but, eh, you can´t be great all the time!) are movies that make me really excited. It´s hard to pick one as favorite, but I have to admit that Wolvie is so far my favorite character played by Hugh! ;)

OK, narrows....I was up by Penn Station this morning, and there's a Wolverine poster on the phone booth up 34th St and 6th Ave, right between the Foot Locker and Payless, if you're still looking for one.
OR...if you head up 36th and 9th Ave, there is a BUILDING-sized (and I'm not exaggerating!) Wolverine billboard there. Just look up, you can't miss it. I saw it from the bus as we were coming out of the Lincoln Tunnel this morning.
By the way suddenly exclaiming "OH MY GOD!!" on a bus will get you a lot of funny looks from your fellow passengers. I couldn't help it, that was a "Munich" billboard yesterday.

Well the problem is, I don't go OUTSIDE Penn Station - I get off the train and then take the subway without going outside. I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled around the 50th Street area. About the Lincoln Tunnel billboard - I think I know where you mean since I've taken buses through the tunnel.

The reason I AM excited about IYCSMN is because it's the first time general audiences will be hearing Hugh sing, plus Ivan's personality sounds a lot like Hugh (from what I read about him and have seen in interviews) so he should make this character utterly charming!

I'm pretty sure you can see it from NJ! Pathetically, I'll try and confirm that on my way home tonight.
I actually took a picture with my phone and sent it to one of my friends (the one I saw BFO with 4 times). She had pretty much the same reaction I did...just not out loud on a crowded bus. :)

Maybe...but I´m more worried about the story than about the character, because I´m sure Hugh is such a fantastic actor that he can make any character charming, anyway. The story just seems a little too lame to me.
Now, the Wolverine poster...  :up:

I sort of did see that once...
I saw Hugh at the stage door after the Boy From Oz once (I had just seen the show, but I wasn't waiting--we were just walking up the opposite side of the block to our car).
He's in this mob of people signing autographs, and suddenly these 5 guys who clearly had not been at the show climbed up on a construction railing and yelled in unison "WOLVERINE!!!!!!!!!"
And Hugh just looked over and cheered right back. It's was the funniest thing ever. :)

Hugh should be used to himself on billboards - when Boy from Oz came out his picture was plastered on the sides of buses! Plus a hugh billboard of him as Peter Allen in Times Square, and when Van Helsing came out those billboards were all over the theater district.

How did this boy from Oz conquer Broadway?
By PATRICK McDONALD
25feb06
PETER Allen would probably love the way The Boy From Oz has mimicked his own life, defying both the odds and the critics to take on the world. The unlikely story of the flamboyant, gay boy from the bush who became an international pop star has also become the most successful Australian musical of all time.
Just as Allen was not the greatest singer or dancer in history, yet drew record houses at New York's Radio City Music Hall, so the show has overcome criticisms of a flimsy plot and uninspired premise to not only be the first Australian musical to reach Broadway but also conquer it.
It is the sheer power of Australian actor Hugh Jackman's performance that has made the show so popular, winning him a coveted Tony Award along the way.
Yet the decision to take on the Broadway role flabbergasted Hollywood heavyweights and agents. Coming off the back of the hit films X-Men, Swordfish and Kate & Leopold, with his reprised action hero role as Wolverine in X-Men 2 ready for release, the Australian actor was hot property in Tinseltown in 2003. "Don't do it," he was told. But Jackman was determined.
He'd already turned down the chance to be involved with the musical based on the life of Australian singer-songwriter Peter Allen when it was first workshopped in Sydney in the late 1990s – and regretted it ever since. Still, taking a year off from a burgeoning film career to play a moderately successful, homosexual singer in an obscure Australian musical was viewed by many as career suicide.
"Conventional wisdom was that it probably was not a great idea," Jackman says. "Later on, when it was a success, many people admitted to saying 'I thought you were nuts'."
Lounging comfortably in a Sydney hotel-room chair, Jackman is more like the boy next door than Peter Allen's campy Boy from Oz.
Tall (189cm), well built and even more handsome in real life than on screen, he also seems unaffected by success: open, charming and eloquent in an intelligent but very natural way.
Jackman says he was right to trust his instincts about The Boy From Oz the second time around, and that actors have to grasp the opportunities which really appeal when they come up.
"Obviously I didn't do it for the money. Obviously it wasn't great for my movie career, in terms of time," he says. "But as it turns out, it's been unbelievable for my movie career. Woody Allen wanted to work with me (in Scoop, due out this year).
"Darren Aronofsky ... came to see me and I did The Fountain with him straight afterwards. Spielberg saw me and he's like 'We've got to do something'. That happened a number of times.
"So it sort of ironically has put me in a different position."
When producer Ben Gannon was developing the original 1998 Australian production of The Boy From Oz, Jackman was approached to audition but declined "because I thought I was getting boxed into musical theatre a little bit at the time".
He'd had extended runs in Disney's Beauty and the Beast and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard at home, as well as Oklahoma! for the National Theatre in London.
Gannon had previously produced a documentary, Peter Allen: The Boy From Oz, for ABC television. Drawing on his past as a theatre company manager and agent, Gannon joined forces with West End, Broadway and Hollywood producer Robert Fox to create what became the biggest musical developed here, raking in $60 million over its two-year Australian run. Jackman subsequently went to see Todd McKenney perform in the lead role twice and told his wife: "I think I've made a big, big mistake."
"When the second opportunity came, my agent in London rang me. I said 'I'm doing it' literally like that," Jackman says.
He must have questioned that wisdom, however, when American critics slammed the show.
Ben Brantley in The New York Times labelled it "indisputably bogus". Variety.com said it was "pitifully flimsy". Associated Press described it as "a turgid, by-the-numbers 'resume' plot" while The Washington Post deigned it a "misguided exercise in celebrity worship".
"The anxiety I felt was 'Will the people like it? Will they connect to this Australian story?'. I mean, it's not the most extraordinary showbiz story in the world," Jackman admits.
The sole aspect singled out for unanimous praise was the magnetism of Jackman's performance, for which he won the 2004 Tony Award for best actor in a musical. On that strength alone, the show went on to play to capacity houses for a year, breaking the Imperial Theatre box-office records an unprecedented 11 times and earning a record $US903,804 ($1.2 million) in one week alone. Gannon boasts that Arthur Laurents, writer of West Side Story and Gypsy, described Jackman's performance as "the greatest Broadway debut performance since Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl".
Now, Jackman is the driving force behind the new arena production, which will tour Australian entertainment centres in August and September.
"I actually brought the idea to Ben and Robert (Fox, co-producer) because I just love playing it," Jackman says. Although keen to perform the show for Australian audiences, he knew the economics of a conventional theatre production would have required impossibly long seasons. "We're doing this show for one very compelling reason, which is to present the most acclaimed Broadway performance in living memory to an Australian audience," Gannon says.
It's often said that rock stars are frustrated actors, and vice versa.
Jackman admits there may be an element of living out a personal fantasy in the arena production: "My wife says 'You are just the biggest ham I know'. There's part of the frustrated rock star in me, I'm sure."
Jackman's relationship with his wife, fellow actor Deborra-Lee Furness, has been integral to both his career success and personal stability.
When he met Furness, eight years his senior, in 1995, she was the more experienced – and famous – actor. Jackman credits her with having helped groom and guide his own career. "I discuss everything with her," he says. "Even on a day-by-day basis, I never go on set to do a scene without having run it through with Deb."
Jackman says the demands of his work and the associated fame are often daunting.
"I get scared and vulnerable and nervous. Just having Deb there has made a huge difference to me," he says. "I think I would have been a lot less anchored without her there."
He also says Furness has helped him keep a balance between work and family, which now includes adopted son Oscar, 5, and daughter Ava, seven months.
The specifics of the arena production of The Boy From Oz are still being devised by a creative team which will include U.S. director Kenny Ortega and Australian set designer Brian Thomson (another Tony Award winner for the Adelaide Festival Centre Trust's revival of The King and I), with costumes by Roger Kirk and lighting by Patrick Woodroffe, who is on tour with the Rolling Stones. Ortega, best known for choreographing the film Dirty Dancing, has directed arena shows by Streisand, Cher and Madonna, and won two Emmy Awards for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
Still based on Nick Enright's original Australian script, the arena version will include extra songs substituted in the American rewrite.
The Boy From Oz is at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on August 24 and 25 at 8pm, and August 26 at 2pm and 8pm. Tickets go on sale from Ticketek on Monday.

Wow... We just dont get anything that scale over here in crummy ol' Blighty :( What I would do to have a building sized Wolverine somewhere up here... I suspect if we get anythign cool it'll be London based, or at absolute most Birmingham (time to head on home then! BB - you got a spare room ;) ) With some luck there might be SOMEthing in Liverpool or Manchester - although we did get the (in comparison completely lame) X2 bus stop posters here, so there's still some slight hope!

I've seen that Sept. 7 date - I wonder how true that is since there's no other release date anywhere.
I guess I'm so anxious for this movie since Hugh finished filming it over a year ago and we've been hearing about it ever since (but not as long as Aronofsky fans who've been following it since 2002 when Brad Pitt was attached!). We also thought it was going to be released last year since Aronofsky even said that in an interview at joblo.com ("it doesn't have a release date yet, but it WILL be this year") so that's why waiting another year is torturous (hey, I ain't getting any younger :)). But I think the main reason the Hugh fans are so anxious is because of all the buzz we've heard on this (the critics LOVE Aronofsky) and it will show the general public a side of Hugh they have never seen. I think the diehard Jackman fans saw some of it in his Australian movie Erskineville Kings, but most fans know him as Wolverine or from his romantic comedies and Swordfish. We who have seen EK and Boy from Oz know what he's capable of (Aronofsky even said so in interviews), so we are just anxious for this movie to open!

>>Her next film, "The Fountain," which is due in the fall, is directed by her fiancé, Aronofsky, and is even more ambitious. It tells interlocking stories, set in different eras and woven together like a braid: Weisz plays Queen Isabella in 16th-century Spain, as well as a girl who is dying of cancer in present-day America and also living in outer space in the future. "The title refers to the search for the fountain of youth," she said. The film has been in the works since her first meeting with Aronofsky five years ago. "Darren was never going to cast me," she recalled. "At the time, 'The Fountain' was to star Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett." Weisz smiled. "But everything changed, and here we are."<<

Hugh's Dinner Date
Beverly Hills, California :: Hugh Jackman, 37, and wife Deborra-Lee Furness, 46, left the kids -- Oscar Jackman, 5, and Ava Jackman, 8 months -- at home for a night out on the town. Hugh and Deborra shared a meal together at the very lush Koi restaurant before heading home. Currently, there are rumors circulating that Hugh Jackman maybe start in the revival of the 1962 musical Stop the World, I Want to Get Off.

Yet another guess at the age gap... I wonder if we'll ever find out the true age difference... Well, while I don't think it matters at all since you can tell he worships the ground she walks on, I did find a high school site once that said Deb was a graduate and announced Oscar's birth. It said she graduated in 1973.
They are celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary I think in April (some places say February, but one of the Ozalots reported that Hugh told her at the stage door on Easter Sunday 2004 (April 11) that they were celebrating their wedding anniversary "tomorrow" so there's another discrepancy - I also heard him say April in a radio interview).

PRODUCERS of The Boy From Oz have responded to demand by adding two more shows in Brisbane.
Producers Ben Gannon and Robert Fox said yesterday that after a record-breaking day of ticket sales on Monday they had decided to add two more shows on September 7 and 8 at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, as well as an extra show for Sydney. Tickets for the additional shows in Brisbane go on sale today.
High ticket prices of up to $249 have not deterred fans from lining up to see Hugh Jackman reprise his award-winning role as Peter Allen.

That's Australian dollars which converts to about $183 American dollars. But that's NOTHING! The price for an orchestra seat at a Broadway show is about $110, and lots of people see shows more than once. Las Vegas shows with big-name stars run about that much money also. I know a lot of "Ozalots" are actually traveling to Australia to see Hugh in this show - and going to more than one show!

'JOEY' TO THE WORLD!
By MICHAEL RIEDEL
THERE'S a rumor flying around that Hugh Jack man, musical theater's numero uno leading man, is planning to return to Broadway in a revival of "Stop the World — I Want to Get Off."
Well, Stop the Rumor Mill — I Know the Real Story.
Jackman is indeed laying plans to conquer Broadway again, but not in some old (and dated) Anthony Newley vehicle like "Stop the World."
What he wants to come back with is the great Rodgers and Hart musical "Pal Joey."
Marc Platt, the producer of "Wicked," has the rights to the 1940 musical and has lined up Matthew Bourne, the celebrated British choreographer of "Swan Lake," and Joe Mantello, the in-demand director of "Wicked," "The Odd Couple" and the upcoming "Three Days of Rain," to co-direct the revival.
The original script, by John O'Hara (who based it on his New Yorker series of short stories), is being reworked by Tony Award-winning playwright Richard Greenberg.
Platt hasn't secured Jackman yet, but sources tell me the actor is dead set on doing the show.
He'll have to forgo the maracas and tight leopard skin shirts he sported as Peter Allen in "The Boy From Oz," however.
Joey Evans, the low-rent, gold-digging nightclub emcee Jackman would play in "Pal Joey," is 100 percent heterosexual, and would never, under any circumstances, marry Liza Minnelli.
The actor will also have to shed his trademark sweetness, since Evans is a first-class jerk, ditching his girlfriend to pursue a rich older woman.
But none of this is beyond Jackman's reach, and he's certainly handsome enough to play a ladykiller.
"Pal Joey" contains some of Rodgers and Hart's most popular songs — "I Could Write a Book," "Zip," "You Mustn't Kick It Around" and the immortal "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered."
It's just about the last of the great musicals that haven't been revived in recent years, though not for lack of trying.
Fugitive producer Garth Drabinsky tried for years to get it on (with a new book by Terrence McNally) as did Fran and Barry Weissler.
Casting was always the problem, since the show requires a genuine star who can sing, act, dance and make the middle-age ladies swoon.
Jackman's the man.
Look for "Pal Joey" to hit Broadway in spring 2007.

I wasn't following this before X1 came out, but I've seen (and liked) Dougray Scott in a couple of films. I think he could have worked but the results would have been very different. He's less of the charismatic leading man, so the ensemble would have been more balanced which would please many comicbook fans. Against that, he'd be harder to market than Jackman.
IMDB lists Dougray Scott as 6' so even allowing for the usual exageration he's still a lot taller than comicbook Wolverine.

One of Hugh's first movies was the Australian movie Erskineville Kings. Hugh was phenomenal in it. IMO if it was released in the US he could have been nominated for an Oscar (which is one of the reasons I am so looking forward to The Fountain, so people can see what he actually can do).

I thought this was particularly interesting about casting:
>>>"In short, we had no money to cast!" so Alan called upon long-time friend and casting director Shauna Wolifson. They auditioned friends, and friends of friends over numerous weekends until finally, they put together the cast. Not surprisingly, most of the actors knew each other and socialized together. The role of Wace was the most difficult to cast. It required an actor who could give the audience a view beneath the pain so that they could understand why he was so angry. When Alan first suggested Hugh Jackman the curious response was, "Isn't he the song and dance guy?" and Alan's constant retort was, "You know what? He's an actor."
As Alan says, "He has the most amazing chameleon-like quality. He'd come in, as Hugh, with a huge smile on his face then two minutes later, as Wace, he'd be blazing with anger, berating everyone in the room." Alan's instinct paid off - it's a tour-de-force performance from Hugh in a role that runs against his public persona.<<
And you MUST click on this link and then watch the first video - it's Hugh's audition for this movie. His accent was much thicker back then (1999) and where did the sweet Hugh go??? Caution - lots of the "f" word.

It was like the complete opposite of everyone I knew who'd seen the show and reacted with "Whoa, that's Wolverine?!" She was more like "That's Peter Allen?!"
She freaked even more when we watched X2, because those Weapon X flashback scenes were a lot more intense then they were in the first movie. But by then, I was so far back into my geek-mode, that it took me a minute to figure out why she was freaking out again...

Just because I like posting nice things people say about Hugh (I wonder if he gave any of the X-Men people gifts?). This is an interview with Jarrod Emick, who played Peter Allen's boyfriend Greg in Boy from Oz.
http://www.playbill.com/news/article/98306.html
Though Ring of Fire marks his Broadway return, this Tony winner was once announced to star as another guitar-strumming hero in the Elvis musical All Shook Up. "It was a contract thing. I definitely wanted to do it, but not for this [favored nations] amount. I wasn't asking for Hugh [Jackman] dollars. It's okay. Cheyenne Jackson's a great guy. That's how things go. I've been on both sides. The only person I owe one to is [director] Chris Ashley. I think the world of him. I did the workshops and was supposed to go to Goodspeed, but I was doing The Boy From Oz. Everyone involved with All Shook Up was just the nicest."
But when it comes to nice guys, it'd be hard to beat his awesome Aussie co-star of The Boy From Oz, says Emick, who played his lover, Greg Connell. "Hugh Jackman's the best. He set the bar for everyone else. I trusted him wholeheartedly, and he felt the same about me. There were days when I didn't want to do the show, and anyone can say that. But not Hugh. There wasn't a goddamn day when he wasn't the happiest man in the world doing The Boy From Oz. He'd make you sick. And he's so generous. At the end of the run, he gave everyone mini-iPods.

>>What Oscar really needs is a sparkling master showperson who knows how to take command, not a laid-back smart guy with a wry sense of humor. It wouldn't hurt if said person's movie credentials amounted to something more than "the fourth male lead from Death to Smoochy," as Stewart described himself. So who might host next year's affair? If Billy Crystal, Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg aren't interested in the gig, I nominate Hugh Jackman. The man who is Wolverine has big-budget movie cred and can sing and dance with the best of them. Further, he has proven as the main attraction of the last three Tony Award shows to be a charismatic and engaging host.
If Jackman's busy next year, how about bringing back the comedy duo of Tomlin and Streep?

OK, I've been caught up in trailer madness (was that awesome, or what?!), this is the first chance I've had to check out this thread in awhile...
First of all, let me say I am a huge Jon Stewart fan, and most of his problems at the Oscars were the dud audience who didn't get half the jokes.
That being said...of course I'd love to see Hugh host the Oscars!
Also, Jarrod Emick is awesome. I also saw him in the 'Rocky Horror Show' on Broadway, when he played Brad. And the last time I saw BFO, there was a whole incident regarding a jar of Vegemite that wound up onstage as a joke in one scene. Watching him and Hugh try not to crack up on stage (and failing miserably) was hilarious. :)

Remember the years when a musical number opened up the Oscars? I think it would be great if something like that was done at the Oscars again like Hugh did at the 2004 Tonys when he opened the show with "One Night Only" and then went on to be a magnificent host.
danoyse
03-07-2006, 08:54 PM
I think the whole Snow White/Rob Lowe fisaco stopped that little tradition. But if Hugh can bring it back, good for him. If he gets any of those musical movies with Disney going, it would fit perfectly.
I think that's why I like the Tonys better than the Oscars...live performances!

i never really liked that pic on the beach, he reminds me too much of superman....
So I was thinking about the possibility of wolverine maybe getting his adamantium ripped out and started looking through both trailers to see if I could figure out when in the movie he confronts magneto based on his wardrobe. You know what I figured out.
First, trying to figure that out is futile.
Second, Wolverine apparantly has like 2 different light jackets and a light sweatshirt that zips up. Why whould he need all three. The leather jacket/wifebeater combo seems like enough right?
What does this mean. Nothing.
Also, it's unlikely that he loses the metal, because that scene is in the forest during the day, and he is not in uniform. He probably wont confront magneto after the final battle, which is at night and he is in uniform.
Which makes me think, when in the continuity of this movie do the x-men pay magneto a visit in the forest??

Did you know that there was a rumor way back when that Hugh had a cameo in Superman Returns? Well it apparently was debunked, but now Variety mentions it again!
http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=cannes2005&content=story&articleid=VR1117939813&query=hugh%20jackman
>>Male Star of the Year: Hugh Jackman
By BETSY BOYD (http://www.variety.com/index.asp?layout=bio&peopleID=1876)
WHY: The Tony-winning thesp is again in blockbuster mode, with a third "X-Men" installment opening in May (and a fourth pic in the series, "Wolverine," announced for '07). He also has voice roles in several upcoming animated features -- DreamWorks' "Flushed Away" and Warner's "Happy Feet" open later this year -- as well as leading roles in the Darren Aronofsky-helmed sci-fier "The Fountain" alongside Rachel Weisz and the Christopher Nolan-directed actioner "The Prestige," which are in varying stages of production. And that's still not all: Jackman recently wrapped "Scoop," the next Woody Allen pic, which co-stars Scarlet Johansson, and he has a cameo in Bryan Singer's upcoming "Superman Returns," playing the Man of Steel's young dad in flashback mode.
ABOUT THE MONEY: That's certainly a lot of B.O. weight to carry. "Look, it is a factor, in that these are huge movies I'm in," Jackman says. "Maybe having done a little bit of theater before, I sort of get intimidated by that, but I always see it as a great opportunity."
Does he get wrapped up in the perfs of these big films? "I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be checking up on Saturday morning how the box office results are doing," he admits. "It's hard not to get involved in the sport of this business. I'm a huge sport lover. As long as you don't let it get you down, and don't get too obsessed, it can be healthy."
BACK FROM THE FEATURE: With all these pics in the can, Jackman will spend his summer reprising his stage role in "The Boy From Oz" in Australia. Live theater "has always been a part of my career and a part of my life, and I find it very rejuvenating. And it certainly sharpens your craft, having to turn up eight times a week, and hit certain things at different points," he says.<<
Also, he's going to be a presenter at the Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards (yes, the one where he won the burping contest a few years ago - maybe this year he will get slimed since they do that to one celebrity) on April 1, and Entertainment Tonight is covering ShoWest and they mentioned Hugh at the end of last night's show and will be reporting on Friday.
Let it go, Variety. :o

A brief and strange mention has popped up online today claiming that Hugh Jackman, he of the shiny claws and the mutant DNA, will be appearing in this summer’s Superman Returns in a cameo as none other than the Man of Steel’s dad.
Which dad Jackman will play – his Earth father or his Krypton pop – is unclear. But according to Variety (http://www.variety.com/)’s story about the actor, who just won Male Star of the Year at the industry convention ShoWest, Jackman “has a cameo in Bryan Singer’s upcoming Superman Returns, playing the Man of Steel’s young dad in flashback mode.” Hmmm.

if X3 is gonna have reverse aging effects on Xavier and Magneto, I hope then Brian Cox can reprise his role in the Wolverine movie. I just can't see how they are going to do a prequel without him.
Well, he's still got one more movie on the deal he signed when he did X2, so there's a very good chance he'll be there if they need his character.
He reiterated that this is absolutely the last X-Men film.

Hugh Jackman Shifts Into Drive
Source: Variety (http://www.variety.com/)
March 17, 2006
Universal Pictures has optioned Drive, James Sallis' novel (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=13684#) about a Hollywood (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=13684#) stunt driver as a starring vehicle for Hugh Jackman and setting it up with Marc Platt, reports Variety. Jackman and partner John Palermo will also produce through their Seed Productions production company.
Sallis' noir-style story, set in the seamy underside of Southern California and Arizona, centers on a stuntman who moonlights as a wheelman during robberies and discovers that a contract has been put on him.
"We see it as a great Steve McQueen-type role for Hugh," Palermo told the trade.
Sallis first wrote Drive as a short story in the anthology "Measures of Poison," then expanded it to novella length and sold it to Poisoned Pen Press, which published it last September. He's the author (http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=13684#) of the six-novel series set in New Orleans featuring detective Lew Griffin and crime novels such as "Cypress Grove."

A Star Showdown in Sin City!
March 17, 2006
NATALIE PORTMAN, HUGH JACKMAN, VINCE VAUGHN and DAKOTA FANNING were just a few of the A-list stars in Las Vegas for the annual ShoWest convention, and ET is behind the scenes for all the action!
ShoWest is the annual entertainment industry convention in which Hollywood descends on Sin City to schmooze with the National Association of Theater Owners, celebrate its own achievements, preview the big summer blockbusters and marvel at the latest filmmaking technology.
The convention culminated Thursday night with a gala awards presentation at the Paris Hotel ballroom, honoring some of the year's biggest stars and hosted by our very own MARY HART!
With 'V for Vendetta' exploding into theaters this weekend and three 'Star Wars' prequels on her resume, Natalie Portman easily earned the Female Star of the Year Award. Hugh Jackman, whose sequel 'X-Men: The Last Stand' hits theaters in May, was named Male Star of the Year. And funnyman Vince Vaughn, who cracked up audiences last year with the hit 'Wedding Crashers' and teams up with romantic interest JENNIFER ANISTON this summer in 'The Break Up,' was named Comedy Star of the Year.
Little Dakota Fanning, who continues to amaze audiences with her on-and-off-screen persona, was named Supporting Actress of the Year. Her next big-screen endeavor is a live-action adaptation of 'Charlotte's Web.' 'The Sixth Sense' mastermind M. NIGHT SHYAMALAN, whose new thriller 'Lady in the Water' chills audiences this summer, was dubbed Director of the Year.
"American Idol" finalist JENNIFER HUDSON, who landed a key role in the upcoming 'Dreamgirls' with JAMIE FOXX and BEYONCÉ, got the coveted Female Star of Tomorrow accolade. 'Matrix' man LAURENCE FISHBURNE, who stars opposite TOM CRUISE in the upcoming 'Mission: Impossible III,' received the Distinguished Decade of Achievement in Film honor. And conversely, BRANDON ROUTH, the new Man of Steel in this summer's 'Superman Returns,' was on hand to be named Male Star of Tomorrow

Does anyone know who were the other nominees in the Male Star of the Year category?

I'm not sure there are nominees - it may have to do with what movies you have coming out during the year. Jude Law got the award in 2004 and that's the year he had a whole bunch coming out in the space of about a month. Quoting Lawrence Fishburne:
Portman, Routh and a slew of other stars descended on the final night of ShoWest Thursday, accepting awards from the convention of theater owners. Though not everyone was familiar with the gala thrown by exhibitors. "My agent called me and said I'd won an award from ShoWest," says Laurence Fishburne, who was honored for "distinguished decade of achievement in film." "I said, 'That's great. What's ShoWest?'" Fishburned joked. "Seriously, it's an honor to be recognized by the people who make sure your movie gets seen the right way, on the big screen."
And how can you not love that smile that just lights up his gorgeous mug?

See now I'm VERY excited about this one! Maybe because I saw him on Broadway four times and I am DYING to have him do a movie musical so people can hear him sing! Plus I read the book and I loved it - IMO this is right up his alley, the charisma will just ooze out of this one.
This movie deal came directly out of his appearing on Broadway - Disney executives saw his performance and wanted to "bottle that charisma" and he has a three-picture movie musical deal with them. This is the first one.
I had no idea that If You Could See Me Now is a musical. Well, it just became slightly more interesting movie. Three-picture deal, huh? That must be a long time.

Mouse House to develop theatrical tuners for Jackman
By MICHAEL FLEMING, CATHY DUNKLEY
Disney has made a nonexclusive deal to develop multiple theatrical tuners for Hugh Jackman to produce and topline.Jackman has formed a company with new partner John Palermo, and they will be joined in the venture by Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who exec produced the feature version of Chicago and are producing Hairspray. The quartet will produce each film.
Deal came after Disney toppers Dick Cook and Nina Jacobson saw Jackman in The Boy From Oz, a Tony-winning turn that made him the first male star courted for musicals since John Travolta followed up Saturday Night Fever with Grease. But the studio's aspirations for the deal hark back to the days of Jackman's idol, Gene Kelly.
Speaking from the set of the Darren Aronofsky-directed The Fountain, Jackman was cautious about creating such expectations. Musicals got a new lease on life because of the commercial and critical success of Chicago. But it remains to be seen how current release Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera and upcoming tuners Rent, Hairspray and The Producers will fare.
Jackman said he is just glad he'll be involved in crafting whatever musical he adds to that mix.
"I'm lucky that at the time my career in movies was building, the movie musicals genre that had been in the desert for 20 years started to come back," said Jackman.
Tuner's tough
"As an art form, the musical is Mount Everest. Tough to pull off, but exhilarating and timeless when it works. And when it is done badly, it stinks to high heaven," he said.
Jackman bided his time after showing off his singing and dancing skills for a year in Oz. He turned down numerous roles and studio overtures.
But he was eager to form a production company with Palermo, whom he met when the latter was Bryan Singer's assistant on X-Men. And they sparked to Disney because Jacobson and Cook gave them the latitude to hatch several vehicles and provided Zadan and Meron as tuner-tested guides.
"Dick and Nina were keen on letting us take our time on multiple projects, and lean on Neil and Craig," Jackman said. "This is an art form that has not been widely practiced, with difficult steps, from music to book to choreography. (Zadan and Meron) have developed a technique."
Jacobson was one of the first execs Jackman met when the Aussie arrived in Hollywood. She said she didn't fully appreciate his gifts until she and Cook saw him on Broadway.
"I went to see The Boy From Oz because Hugh was the only person I knew personally who could sing and dance, and I left thinking, How can we not try to find movies that capture these singing and dancing abilities and that charisma?" Jacobson said. "Dick and I are very gonzo about this. We are hoping writers and directors will come forward with ideas."
Appealing to all
"Hugh's got qualities that men identify with, that women find sexy and kids find entertaining," Palermo said.
Jackman would seem a good candidate to broaden the audience appeal of tuners. He is most readily identifiable to moviegoers for the X-Men character Wolverine and the vampire hunter Van Helsing.
He'll continue on the action track: Jackman and Palermo will cut their teeth as producers by getting involved in the third installment of X-Men, as well as a Wolverine spinoff feature Troy scribe David Benioff is penning at Fox.
Venture will be overseen by Disney execs Karen Glass and Doug Shore, along with Travis Knox, who heads up features for Zadan/Meron Prods.
Jackman said Disney will develop as many as three projects at the same time. That may include a remake, though he hopes not.
"There might be a classic out there that can be redone and find an audience," Jackman said, "but I am personally more interested in finding something new."

Disney Acquires First Musical Project for Hugh Jackman
By Robert Simonson
October 6, 2005
Back in January 2005, Disney announced a nonexclusive deal with the Boy From Oz star Hugh Jackman to develop several movie musicals.
The company and Jackman have now selected their first venture, Variety reported. It is a film musical version of "If You Could See Me Know," a novel by Cecelia Ahern, the 23-year-old daughter of the Prime Minister of Ireland, Bertie Ahern.
The story tells of a lonely child with an imaginary friend—the Jackman role. The kid is being raised by his aunt, who one day is magically able to see Jackman, resulting is an unlikely romance.
The book will be published by Hyperion in early 2006.
Jackman will co-produce and star in each new Disney musical project. Jackman's producing partners include John Palermo, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. Zadan and Meron were the producers of the hit "Chicago" film and are currently working on the musical film of "Hairspray."
Jackman's movie deal could include a remake of a classic musical. About that prospect, the actor told Variety, "There might be a classic out there that can be redone and find an audience, but I am personally more interested in finding something new."
Jackman, who scored raves and a Tony Award for his performance in Broadway's The Boy From Oz, will also partner with Palermo to produce the third installment of "X-Men" plus a spinoff feature of "Wolverine."
Hugh Jackman is a very busy man, hopefully with all these movies out in the next few years he will get a lot more recognition

Let's also not forget his rumored return to Broadway next year in "Pal Joey" or the one-man show he wants to do! I have a feeling once the movies he has coming out this year get rolling, he will be everywhere. He's been out of the movie limelight since 2004 because of Broadway, although all theater fans know who he is. Now it's time to get back to getting his name back in the movies and towards the end of the year his name will be everywhere. X-3 in May is a good start.

Jackman in Superman...Why the Heck Not?
Posted Mar 17th 2006 9:02PM by Mark Beall

Hugh Jackman has certainly become a geek culture favorite these days - his fantastic Wolverine portrayal impressed many a comic geek, myself included. He has since joined the Christopher Nolan cabal with a major role in the upcoming fantasy flick The Prestige (a film which seems to include everyone in Hollywood except maybe Ben Affleck), which has of course inspired a flurry of "Hugh Jackman will be in Batman" rumors - rumors which may possibly have been encouraged/substantiated by Jackman himself in a recent Australian media appearance. It seems like a natural progression anyway, since the entire cast and crew of Batman seems to be involved in The Prestige. At any rate, regardless of the truth of the Batman rumors, Jackman HAS apparently confirmed a brief appearance in that other major hero flick we keep hearing about. Yes, my friends, Hugh Jackman will be appearing in a small cameo as Clark Kent's father in a Superman Returns flashback scene - presumably (as CBR points out) this refers to Mr. Kent, and not Jor-El.
So...at this rate, can we just presume that Hugh will show up in every major comic book movie from now until the end of time? We can probably at least expect him to be rumored to do so. What do you think - Hugh as a newspaper vendor in Spider-Man 3? How about playing a Skrull in a future FF project? Maybe be can be one of the Corps in the rumored Green Lantern Trilogy. A spurned love interest for Wonder Woman? Or we can just have a movie called "Hugh Jackman: Hardcore Super Hero." C'mon, you know you'd go to see it.

I taped two of the entertaiment shows because they weren't shown in their nommal timeslots because of basketball and were repeated in the middle of the night. Hugh looked GREAT watching him on the screen. And finally, a more definitive answer about the movies (I think!). The reception was held at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
On "The Insider" they showed clips, and Hugh said (I am stopping and playing my VCR so this is his exact words):
"Making these movies is always a blast because Halle Berry's in it."
Host: While XMen Hugh Jackman wasn't giving up much in terms of XMen the Last Stand's plot, he did hint we may not have seen the last of his wild Wolverine.
Hugh: This is basically, we're intending this to be the end, this is the end of the trilogy. Then (chuckling) we're doing a Wolverine movie..."
On "Entertainment Tonight" Mary Hart called him up to the podium. He said "I'm incredibly honored. I've actually been here once before. How big is this room? How are you guys doing in the back there - you good??? Officially they're in Utah, I believe, out there but...." (my note - Utah is the next state over from Nevada).
This is why he makes a great host/entertainer - he knows how to work the room!

An interview with the director of Boy from Oz:
http://www.qctimes.net/articles/2006/03/18/news/local/doc441ba5f18b8b5655092715.txt
>>McKinley’s Broadway debut came as director of “The Boy From Oz,” a musical biography of Peter Allen, a gay singer-songwriter and ex-husband of Liza Minnelli. It won a Tony Award for actor Hugh Jackman, who played Allen.
“Four out of the seven characters die,” McKinley said, “and they want it to be a fun evening.”
He said Jackman was reluctant to take the role until the director promised he could back out after two weeks. By the third day of rehearsals, Jackman had agreed to stay with the role, which he held on Broadway from October 2003 to September 2004.
“He’s much stronger on stage because you get the whole aura of Hugh that you don’t get on film,” McKinley said, referring to the star of the “X-Men” movies.
McKinley said the musical only made it to Broadway because of Jackman. Too many producers, he said, do not want to take a chance on an unknown star or unfamiliar story.
“Broadway has become Disney-fied,” he said. “They’re looking for titles that everybody knows and recognizes.”
“Four out of the seven characters die,” McKinley said, “and they want it to be a fun evening.”

EXCLUSIVE: MAD MAX
EXCLUSIVE Hugh to star as the Nazis' favourite fight
By John Millar
X-MEN hunk Hugh Jackman has been told to muscle up for his new role... as Hitler's favourite boxer.
He is to play German heavyweight champion Max Schmeling in Save Us Joe Louis, the new boxing epic from Hollywood director Spike Lee.
It tells the story of Schmeling's two legendary world title fights with Brown Bomber Joe Louis, played by Hustle & Flow star Terrence Howard.
Lee hopes to start filming in the autumn and is warning his stars to get in shape for their roles.
He said: "We are going to have to do some serious training."
The film deals with racism, politics and propaganda, as well as the bloody, bruising battles in the ring.
Lee says it will be the most demanding and ambitious film of his career.
It will focus on how Nazi leaders used Schmeling as propaganda for their Aryan master race theory.
Schmeling faced Louis twice in the ring but Lee reveals Hitler had not wanted the first fight in 1936.
Lee said: "At that time nobody thought Louis would ever lose and it would not look good for the Aryan race to be beaten.
"But after Schmeling knocked out Louis, he became a propaganda tool, used as an example of the superiority of the Germans."
The Nazi gloating didn't last long I because Louis gained a rematch and won in the first round.
Amazingly, Louis and Schmeling went on to become firm friends.
When Louis was in ill health, the German paid his medical bills and when Louis died in 1981, Schmeling helped pay for the funeral.
Schmeling died, aged 99, in February 2005 but although Lee had . been working on his movie for six years he says the German hadn't been aware of the project.
Lee said: "He had been a recluse for the last 10 years."
The director is a huge sports fan and - strangely for an American-loves football.
He's a devoted Arsenal fan and a great friend of the Gunners' star striker and fellow anti-racicm campaigner Thierry Henry.
In fact the French striker was even rumoured to have a cameo role in Lee's latest thriller, Inside Man.
But he admitted last night: "Thierry's not in the film. We have never discussed him being in a movie."
Schmeling v Louis
Max Schmeling became the first German heavyweight world champion when he beat Jack Sharkey in New York on June 12, 1930.
The German is best remembered for his two fights against Joe Louis. The first bout on June 19, 1936, when he defeated the previously unbeaten Louis in the 12th round and the rematch in 1938, when Louis knocked out Schmeling to regain the world title.
Schmeling later claimed he was almost glad he had lost saying: "A win over Joe Louis might have made me the perfect Aryan of the Third Reich."
Joe Louis won his first 27 professional fights with 23 knock-outs. By the time he was 21, he was hailed as the greatest fighter of all time.
He retired in 1951 after Rocky Marciano knocked him out in the eighth round. Afterwards Louis worked with Sonny Liston and as an adviser to Muhammad Ali.

I know a lot of the "Ozalots" (fans of the Broadway show who saw it a zillion times) were pre-registered at the tickets sites so they bought a lot of the tickets at the pre-sale, about a week before the tickets were released to the general public. A lot of them are traveling to Australia to see a few of the shows, and I'm sure they are all sitting in the first few rows at whatever shows they are attending.

Exclusive Video Interview: Fox Head Tom Rothman Confirms Wolverine to be a Prequel
I was a bit under the weather today and was unable to attend the premiere of Ice Age 2: The Meltdown that was held on a snow covered Hollywood Blvd, thats right snow in Los Angeles. So I sent the next best thing, my 10 year old stepdaughter Alyson.
She has covered a few red carpets for us before like Lemony Snickets, Aquamarine and Yours, Mine and Ours. Not only can Alyson hold her own on a red carpet, at the Ice Age 2 premiere she asked Fox Head, Tom Rothman, some tough questions!
With the second AVP on it's way and also X-Men and Fantastic Four, why does Mr. Rothman as a studio head feel it is important to make these "genre" films? He said that they are great films to make because they are big hits, but also they are films that he likes. He says he loved comic books as a kid and he loves comic book movies now.
Also, Hugh Jackman recently alluded that the Wolverine spin off film may be a prequel, how accurate is that? Although he says he will get in trouble if he tells, just between him and her, yes it's a prequel, and that's a scoop!

Vinnie Jones mentioning the Wolverine Spinoff... Looks like our main man will still be lead role (despite him mentioning before that he'd probably just be producing rather than starring)
"The 6-foot-2-inch actor joined the "X-Men" franchise last year as the unstoppable head-bashing villain who has battled Professor X's disciples through five decades of comic book plotlines (see " 'X-Men 3' Casting News: Soccer Star, Sure ... But Frasier Crane?"). Admitting that his deal obligates him to two sequels, however, Jones said he fully expects to don his character's helmet again after "Stand" concludes the trilogy (see " 'X-Men' Director Says Movie Will Really Be 'The Last Stand' ").
"That's my contract," he grinned. "I hope so ... please, God!"
"I said this to Brett the other day, and he was saying that they'll probably use a lot of the characters," Jones said, implying that the director will also return alongside star Hugh Jackman in "Wolverine." "Hopefully [the Wolverine/ Juggernaut rivalry] will come into it. There might be something for me and him to get together." "

A HUGH AND CRY
By MICHAEL RIEDEL
March 22, 2006 -- A SPIRITED battle has broken out be hind the scenes for the services of Hugh Jackman, Broadway's top leading man.
Jackman's talents and tremendous box-office appeal are being sought by both the Shubert Organization, Broadway's leading landlord and the most powerful institution in the American theater, and Marc Platt, who, as the producer of the blockbuster "Wicked" and the Julia Roberts vehicle "Three Days of Rain," has emerged as one of the most influential independent producers on Broadway.
A couple of week ago, I reported that Jackman was pretty close to signing up for Platt's revival of Rodgers and Hart's "Pal Joey," scheduled to open on Broadway next year.
At the same time, Jackman was fielding an offer from the Shuberts to star in a revival of "Stop the World - I Want to Get Off."
Once the Shuberts got wind of Jackman's flirtation with "Pal Joey," they mounted a full-court press.
Shubert chief Gerald Schoenfeld, a persuasive and charming potentate to whom an actor says "no" at his own peril, was on the phone to Jackman, making the case for "Stop the World."
His efforts seem to have stalled Jackman's march to "Pal Joey" - at least for the time being.
"Hugh is very fond of Gerry," says a theater source. "So it's not just a question of turning down a powerful man, but also a friend."
But Platt, no slouch in the persuasive department, remains confident he'll be able to land Jackman, theater sources say.
After all, he's offering one of the best roles in the musical theater - Joey Evans, the handsome, gold-digging heel.
It's also a role Jackman has long wanted to play.
In addition, the score to "Pal Joey" is brimming with standards - "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," "I Could Write a Book," "You Mustn't Kick It Around," as well as "The Lady Is a Tramp" and "My Funny Valentine," which were added to the movie starring Frank Sinatra.
"Stop the World," on the other hand, has the timeless "What Kind of Fool Am I?" but not much else in the way of standards.
Leslie Bricusse, who wrote the score with Anthony Newley, has agreed to write some new songs for the revival, but whether he can still crank out hit tunes is a gigantic question mark.
His last go-around on Broadway was "Jekyll & Hyde," for which he wrote the lyrics, and that does not inspire confidence (from the song "This Is the Moment": "Every endeavor/I have made ever/Is coming into play/Is here and now today" - yikes!).
Theater insiders are betting that, in the end, Jackman will make his triumphant return to Broadway in "Pal Joey" rather than "Stop the World."
It's simply a better show.
But all of Broadway will be watching to see how the musical theater's favorite leading man turns down the mighty Shuberts and still remains in their good graces.
Hmmm - more Hugh musicals. :D

There's a fight over him! I'd love to know how he would fit this in with all the movies he has lined up to do. And I don't think he would do another year's run like BFO (I'm gonna have to jump on my tickets QUICK!). And an interesting aside - the "Marc Platt" mentioned here is one of the producers of his just-announced movie "Drive."
Liz Smith in the NY Post:
http://www.nypost.com/gossip/liz/liz.htm
...BELIEVE IT or not, the original Broad way play script for the Rodgers & Hart classic musical "Pal Joey" is being redone as you read this to bring it up to date. And as you have read, Hugh Jackman hopes to re-create his Great White Way triumph in "The Boy From Oz" by playing that rascal Joey. "Oz" was definitely Hugh's triumph! Imagine what this charismatic actor-dancer-singer might do with really excellent material. (Even people who hated "Oz" adored the star!) "Pal Joey," from an original John O'Hara story and with several successful revivals under its historical belt, would give Hugh something hefty with which to work.
Now they have to find the sexy "older woman" to play Vera, the rich keeper of the kept. And my word! There must be about a thousand over-40 actresses and stars who'd just be perfect singing, among other things, "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered." Oh, and they have to find a sharp cookie to play the reporter who rips into "Zip." Elaine Stritch rocketed to fame doing this mock striptease in the 1952 revival of "Pal Joey."
Whether or not Hugh ends up in "Pal Joey," they say he'll first tour for 60 performances in Australia with "Oz," earning himself a veritable pension fund with such an effort.

Will Hugh Jackman Stop the World or Become a Pal Joey?
By Andrew Gans
March 22, 2006
As recently reported, singer-actor Hugh Jackman — who made a Broadway splash with and received a Tony Award for his performance in The Boy From Oz — is currently in negotiations to star in a revival of Pal Joey for Wicked producer Marc Platt.
The New York Post says Jackman has another offer on his plate, a revival of Stop the World — I Want to Get Off to be produced by the Shubert Organization. Leslie Bricusse, who composed the Stop the World score with Anthony Newley, has agreed to pen a few new tunes for the production should Jackman agree to the revival.
Platt, the Post previously reported, has lined up his award-winning Wicked director, Joe Mantello, to helm the Pal Joey revival, with choreography to be supplied by Swan Lake's Matthew Bourne. Richard Greenberg, the Tony-winning Take Me Out playwright, will adapt John O'Hara's original script.
The much-sought-after Jackman has made no official comment about either production.
Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart’s Pal Joey opened at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre on Christmas night 1940, playing 374 performances before closing Nov. 29, 1941. The original cast included Vivienne Segal and Gene Kelly. The Rodgers and Hart score boasts such tunes as "I Could Write a Book," "What Is a Man?," "Zip," "Pal Joey," "Happy Hunting Horn," "Chicago," "That Terrific Rainbow," "The Flower Garden of My Heart," "Den of Iniquity," "Plant You Now, Dig You Later," "Take Him" and "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered." The most recent New York staging of Pal Joey was presented by City Center Encores! That weekend of concerts featured Peter Gallagher in the title role with Tony-winning actress Patti LuPone as Vera.
Stop the World — I Want to Get Off features a book and score by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley. The original production opened at the Shubert Theatre Oct. 3, 1962, playing 555 performances before closing Feb. 1, 1964, at the Ambassador Theatre. Newley headed the cast of the musical, which features such songs as "I Want to Be Rich," "Typically English," "Once in a Lifetime" and "What Kind of Fool Am I?"
Hugh Jackman received a Tony Award for his portrayal of the late Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz. He received an Olivier Award nomination for his work in the London revival of Oklahoma! and an MO Award for his performance as Joe Gillis in the Australian production of Sunset Boulevard. Jackman's film credits include "The X-Men," "Someone Like You," "Swordfish," "Kate and Leopold" (Golden Globe nomination) and "Van Helsing."

The play:
http://www.nodanw.com/shows_p/pal_joey.htm
>>Act I In a cheap night-club, Joey auditions for the job of M.C. and gets it by his self-confidence and cockiness with the owner Mike. Later, outside a pet shop, Joey chats up Linda. He tells her his "life-story" - a pack of lies about lost fortunes and playing polo. She falls for this and they realise their mutual attraction. A month later, in the club, Mrs "Chicago Society" - Vera, an experienced woman of about 35, saunters in with friends and soon eyes Joey up and down. Linda is there with a boyfriend and Joey is somewhat curt to her. Vera makes it clear to Joey that he attracts her, but when he gets too fresh, she and her friends flamboyantly walk out. Mike is furious and gives Joey till the end of the week to get her back. Joey then calls Vera and insults her for costing him his job; this is done in a state of some panic, but it evidently works.
A couple of nights later, Vera unexpectedly turns up at the club, drawn by Joey's charm, thus saving him his job. They go off together to her apartment. A few days later, in a tailor's shop, Vera smothers Joey (whom she is obviously now keeping) with new clothes: evidently she has fallen for him. But Linda, who works there, comes in, much to Joey's surprise and Vera's jealousy. She puts on a tough act with poor Linda, pretending to be Joey's second wife. Joey hears this from the tearful girl, but admits 'What do I care for a dame?' The act ends with a ballet, which is Joey's fantasy of what the night-club of his own that Vera has promised him will be like.
Act II At Chez Joey's, Victor prepares the floor-show as Melba Snyder, a fast-talking reporter, interviews Joey about his new club. Egged on by Joey's fantasising, she contrives to make his history more interesting in order to get a good column. And she has plenty to tell about her own interview scoops. Ludlow Lowell breezes in, claiming to be a top agent, and with the help of the dancer Gladys (an old accomplice), cajoles Joey into signing a contract with him, which robs Joey of his independence. Later, these two plot a neat triple blackmail - on Vera, by revealing her affair with Joey to her husband; on her husband, to 'protect' his business from scandal; and of course on Joey, for obvious reasons! They try to enlist Linda, as the 'woman scorned', but she refuses. Gladys doesn't think it's going to be easy, but Ludlow is ready to do it the hard way.
At Joey and Vera's love-nest, Linda tells her about the plot: Vera senses scandal, graciously 'returns' Joey to Linda and phones the Commissioner of Police. She tells Joey of the plot before Ludlow and Gladys arrive but they are thwarted by the Commissioner, who bundles them off. Vera realises that the affair is over, tells Joey and closes the Chez Joey bank account. As she leaves, the rent-collector arrives, but Joey still sweet-talks his way out of trouble. Linda and Joey then part, again outside the pet shop where they met. As she exits left, another girl crosses the stage and exits right - and she is the one that our incorrigible Pal Joey follows as the curtain falls.<<<
The movie, from 1957, starred Frank Sinatra as Joey.
Joey Evans is charming, handsome, funny, talented, and a first class, A-number-one heel. When Joey meets the former chorus girl ("She used to be 'Vera...with the Vanishing Veils'") and now rich widow Vera Simpson, the two lecherous souls seem made for each other. That is, until Linda English comes along. Linda is a "mouse on the <chorus> line" and built like there's no tomorrow. But she's the typical good little girl from a good little home -- just the right ingredient to louse up Joey's cushy set up.
Wow. The original had Kim Novak and Rita Hayworth as the leading ladies. It's going to be hard to find actresses who will match them. This is why I'm against remakes... :O

It's not going to be a movie, it's going to be on Broadway, so Broadway stars will probably play the ladies.
Oh, my bad. I misread. I thought they will make a movie. :O

Jackman Torn Between Stopping the World and Being Pal Joey as Producers Call
According to The New York Post's Michael Riedel, Tony Award-winner Hugh Jackman is torn between two upcoming revivals--both of which rumors have previously linked him to.
Riedel reports that Jackman is sought after by the Shubert Organization (Spamalot)--headed by Gerald Schoenfeld--for a revival of Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse's 1962 hit Stop the World--I Want to Get Off, in which the star would play Cockney everyman Littlechap. Meanwhile, producer Marc Platt (Wicked, the upcoming Julia Roberts blockbuster Three Days of Rain) has been trying to lure Jackman into playing the amoral, charismatic title character of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's Pal Joey, which opened on Broadway in 1940. The revival is slated to open next year.
Riedel writes that the Shuberts are working hard to sign Jackman for Stop the World after hearing of Jackman's interest in a Pal Joey revival, and that Platt is equally eager to sign the Boy from Oz star.
While Jackman has not announced a commitment to either revival, Riedel places his bet on Pal Joey: "After all, he's offering one of the best roles in the musical theater - Joey Evans, the handsome, gold-digging heel. It's also a role Jackman has long wanted to play. In addition, the score to Pal Joey is brimming with standards - 'Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,' 'I Could Write a Book,' 'You Mustn't Kick It Around,' as well as 'The Lady Is a Tramp' and 'My Funny Valentine,' which were added to the movie starring Frank Sinatra. Stop the World, on the other hand, has the timeless 'What Kind of Fool Am I?' but not much else in the way of standards." Originally starring Gene Kelly, Vivienne Segal and June Havoc, among others, Pal Joey ran for a successful 374 performances and is now considered the first major musical to feature an antihero as its leading man role.
Leslie Bricusse, who most recently contributed lyrics for Jekyll & Hyde, has also agreed to penning new songs for a Stop the World revival. Newley, who also created the role of Littlechap, passed away in 1999.
The multi-talented Jackman won a Tony Award for his performance of Peter Allen in The Boy from Oz--which he will take on a tour of his native Australia beginning this August. He was also won nominated for the 1998 Olivier for Best Actor in a Musical for his Curly in the Royal National Theatre's Oklahoma! A musical theatre veteran back in Australia, he played Joe Gillis in the 1996 production of Sunset Boulevard in Melbourne, and Gaston in 1995's Beauty and the Beast. He also won an Emmy for hosting the 2004 Tony Awards. Film credits include the X-Men films, Someone Like You and Van Helsing. A third X-Men film is on the way, and Jackman will also reprise his role as Wolverine in a spin-off movie of the same name.

I was thinking the same thing....I don't think you'll see him do another full year on Broadway for awhile, so whichever show he comes back to is going to be a limited thing. Which also means getting tickets is going to be a nightmare!
Hey, remember when the Boy From Oz box office opened? They were giving away free posters to the first groups of people who showed up--but the big surprise was that Hugh showed up as well, and signed posters for the people on line. It was really cool! (I wasn't there, of course...but I saw it on TV!) :)
