I'll tell you what hasn't been his greatest acomplishments...those direct-to-DVD movies and that stupid superhero show on the Sci-Fi Channel.

And, as if it hasn't been said enough already, this thread's title gives a misleading jolt.

I dont want to take away from the greatness that is "Stan the Man Lee" but some of the characters on your list were not created by Stan.....

Vision , Ultron and Grim Reaper were created by Roy Thomas & John Buscema.

Havok was created by Roy Thomas and Neal Adams

The original Human Torch was created by Carl Burgos for Timely Comics

And Thor and Loki are both characters in Norse Mythology....it wouldnt be fair to say he created them. But he did build those characters from the ones in the myth.

Stan Lee = Class act.

Unlike many other comic creators who consider themselves gods Stan Lee always seems rather humble always ready to give props to the artists he worked with rather than himself. Like i said a class act and seems like the nicest guy on the planet.

Tell that to Steve Ditko.

I though stan was nice about ditko? In a documentary on comcis i`m sure he said ditko`s pencils almost didn`t require the speech bubbles, which coming from the writer must be praise indeed. I`m sure he was talking about ditko.

Well he was writting both books when the characters first came out so its a hard one to debate.

Oh, he's complimented Ditko and others enough, but he's quite arrogant about the creator credits. As Lee tells it in "In Search of Steve Ditko" (recent hour BBC documentary), Ditko should essentially be honoured that Lee is willing to give him co-creator rights, even though he himself believes he thought it all up on his own.

My respect for Lee really took a down turn after that interview.

He co-created an entire universe. A comic book character isn't a comic book character without a "look". I also saw the Steve Ditko interview and thought Lee's answer to the "co-creation" question was arrogant and wrong (or at the very least -- poorly phrased).

Were it not for Kirby and Ditko working with Lee, Marvel wouldn't exist...except as maybe a typewritten scrap of script. Co-creator is the proper term for Lee in a lot of cases.

The face of Marvel he was, no doubt - and that I respect. He's a living legend. His TV show, not so much. Giant Evil Stan from the five minutes I watched on Sci-Fi was revolting.

CaptainStacy

Ditko's a mental case. :yay:

KangConquers
10-23-2007, 04:37 PM
The attitude that artists are more important than writers is the reason Marvel is a mess of splash pages and little story content.

Harlekin
10-23-2007, 04:46 PM
Who said anything about artists being more important than writers?

You can't have one without the other in the comics bizz, and it's a fallacy to name Lee the sole creator of a lot of these characters, especially since we know the artists contributed a lot, if not the entire look.

As for Ditko being a mental case. He's eccentric. Big difference.

That show is one of the most awful things ever, for all his accomplishments, and all the cool characters he has contributed, the man's definitely out of touch with whats cool.
I don't know, but do kids like that super-hero show? Its embarrassing to watch I seen parts of 2 episodes and i couldn't take it for more then 5 minutes.
