I didn't give the Giants zero chance of winning, I'm not really what you would call a "yahoo" or a "homer". We're talking about the Red Sox though, they are only 1.5 games behind The Rays and they are have two less wins then Anaheim. They aren't as good as last year's version of the Red Sox but they aren't a push over team in my opinion at least. I've already said Anaheim is the best team going into the playoffs, they have been the best team in the league for a large stretch. So sure they are the team to beat.

Do you want to see a dozen balls hitting off the Green Monster or going into the RF corner every game he starts? He still has the mentality of a power pitcher which is what's killing him.
Pedro is one of my favorite players ever, but his tenure as a Met has been a bigger disappointment and disaster than Tom Glavine's. Glavine at least was always healthy and pitched 2 great playoff games for the Mets. Glavine's horrendous Sept last year is what really killed his reputation here. Pedro has only had 1 healthy season and has yet to throw a pitch in the post season for the Mets. I'd be fine if he never did.

Yeah and next June when he is hitting .220 with 6 HR and 22 RBIs you'll jump right back on that bandwagon... but I agree... this team needs to land the best pitcher on the market not named C.C Sabathia... whomever that might be... before chasing after a Teixera.

Everyone one will be back on that bandwagon. I give up b/c it's too hard to argue against the option now.
Mets won the final game. This is why I don't think Phillies winning 2 of 3 would be huge. They only gained 1 game and blew a chance to sweep and tie for the lead. It was nice to see Hamels throw BP.

Saw Wagner is having Tommy John surgery.
Billy Wagner will have Tommy John surgery on his elbow and likely miss much of next season, the Newark Star-Ledger reports.
Newsday said that Wagner would tendon surgery, but has since altered the report to say ligament instead. This is the worst-case scenario for Wagner, but perhaps not for the Mets. With Wagner set to miss most of the final season of his four-year deal, tbey could enter the chase for Francisco Rodriguez this winter. Given that Wagner is 37 and a reliever, he'll probably attempt to rush back from surgery. The All-Star break could be a target. Sep. 8 - 2:22 pm et

I know that Yankees may have a knee-jerk reaction to this subpar year by wanting to sign all the old, overpaid, and expensive players on FA market, but I hope they will try to develop young, home-grown talents, and supplement them with some veteran presence instead. I do think Yanks' priority should be to strengthen their starting rotation, because pitching was the biggest reason why they won all those WS several years ago.

I'll admit we've lost games because of Melky's bat, but if the offense had done what's it's supposed to do, then we wouldn't be talking about it. He's been moved from RF to CF to LF up and down the lineup. He went on a 18 game hit streak back in 2007. Then they changed him up again and he struggled. If they would keep him in one spot and let him steady out, he'll be fine.

I don't think they are even close in theory. Pedroia, Lester, Youkilis, Ellsbury, Masterson, Paplebon, Lowrie, Delcarmen are all home grown talent. Also the Yankees sign 4 or 5 overpaid veterans and bring them in per season.
Gagne is gone and the Red Sox are paying a pro-rated version of Kotsay's contract which is 7 Million this season, then he is a free agent. He has been a bargain so far, 9 RBIS in 8 games. Lugo is obviously an albatross so I have to agree with you there.

Moving around in the OF doesn't have an effect. The Mets were having every OF not named Beltran play LF and RF all the time. None of them hit any differently.
And having an 18-game hit streak shows he can hit the ball consistently from game to game. He still needs some plate skills though.
What about his streaks when he's done absolutely nothing? Like from July 27 to Aug 13 when he hit 178/213/222. You can't use streaks as proof he can hit consistently. This May and June he hit 234/270/319 and 206/259/255 respectively.

Diary entry may offer proof that baseball came from England
Baseball is as American as ... tea and crumpets?
That may be case, according to a diary uncovered in southern England last year but only now being made public.
Julian Pooley, the manager of the Surrey History Centre, said Thursday he has authenticated a reference to baseball in a diary by English lawyer William Bray dating back to 1755 -- about 50 years before what was previously believed to have been the first known reference to what became the American pastime.
"I know his handwriting very well," Pooley told The Associated Press in a telephone interview, adding he believed the game wasn't very common at the time. "He printed it to show it was new to him. He doesn't mention baseball again. It was something that seemed special."
Bray wrote that he played the game with both men and women on the day after Easter, a traditional holiday in England.
"He was about 18 or 19 (at the time of the diary entry)," Pooley said. "He was a very social man. He enjoyed sports."
The entry reads:
"Easter Monday 31 March 1755
"Went to Stoke Ch. This morning. After Dinner Went to Miss Jeale's to play at Base Ball with her, the 3 Miss Whiteheads, Miss Billinghurst, Miss Molly Flutter, Mr. Chandler, Mr. Ford & H. Parsons & Jelly. Drank Tea and stayed till 8."
Baseball has long been thought to have been an American invention, with roots in the British games of rounders and cricket.
The first recorded competitive baseball game took place in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1846 between the Alexander Cartwright's Knickerbocker Base Ball Club of New York and the New York Nine. The first professional team played in 1869 and the first professional league started two years later.
Bray, who died in 1832, kept a diary for much of his life and wrote a history of Surrey. He also transcribed and published the diary and writings of English writer John Evelyn.
Pooley said he first became aware of Bray's reference in July 2007 after local historian Tricia St. John Barry notified Major League Baseball to say she found a notation of the game that predated their own findings.
"She said, `... I've got a reference in a diary I found in the shed,"' Pooley said.
Pooley said St. John Barry only told MLB about the diary after researchers came to England last year working on a movie by Major League Baseball Advanced Media called "Base Ball Discovered," which examines the origins of the sport.
"She didn't realize its significance (before that)," Pooley said.
The movie is to be shown next week at the Baseball Film Festival in Cooperstown, New York, the home of the sport's Hall of Fame.
"While filming our documentary in England, we met Tricia, who responded to a BBC piece on our film crew being in country, looking at the roots of baseball," MLB.com said on its Web site. "This discovery places William Bray in a new role of importance and provides insight into baseball's beginnings."
The Surrey History Centre said there is a reference to baseball that came earlier than Bray's, but it appears in a fictional book by John Newberry called "A Little Pretty Pocket-Book." Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey" also refers to baseball. It was written in 1798 but not published until 1817.
"It is a game steeped in history and now Surrey County Council's History Centre and an inquisitive local historian have provided the earliest manuscript proof that the game the Americans gave to the world came from England," said Helyn Clack, an executive member for safer and stronger communities at Surrey County Council.
A copy of the diary is to go on display at Surrey History Centre on Saturday.
I wouldn't be that surprised if its true. Baseball was based British sports Cricket and Rounders. American football is based on Soccer and Rugby. You guys took our Apple Pie too ;)

Can't wait till next year when he does that for the Mets. I'm actually for signing him. Not every day you get a chance to sign a good closer at 26. I think the increase in his H/9 and BB/9 as well as decrease in K/9 are due to him reworking his mechanics a bit. He's not locking his left knee (one he lands on) which helps alleviate the stress on his arm. He's not throwing as hard as a result but can still dial it up. Usually takes a year for pitchers to get these tweaks down. Going to the NL might improve those stats as well.

Pujols shouldn't be allowed to get it after the big hissy fit he threw for Howard getting when the Phillies didn't make the playoffs. With two weeks left to go and the team tied for the lead in the wild-card race. This is an incredibly bold stroke, but it just might work out. Yost was a goner anyway if the Brewers failed to make it to the postseason, and it seems like everything he had tried of late has backfired. In his defense, it's not like he's had any easy choices with his bullpen. Replacing Yost will be the third-base coach, Dale Sveum. Bench coach Ted Simmons has been reassigned to an advisory role. Pujols shouldn't be allowed to get it after the big hissy fit he threw for Howard getting when the Phillies didn't make the playoffs. Manny has helped The Dodgers improve to a playoff team, and Delgado and Howard have been crushing the ball the second half....Carrying both teams offensively, although Wright is turning it up now.
Pujols is a sore loser but, to me, the most feared hitter in baseball. Manny has done will with the Dodgers but I don't see him winning the NL MVP after being in the NL half a season and quitting on the Red Sox. Delgado's 2nd half has been very good but not the best. Howard's OBP is too low to be the MVP.

The Phillies have now given themselves and the Mets the Wild Card as a safety net should one not win the division.

Nah. Jerry has done very well as manager and the team has shown bounce back ability which it lacked last year. Barring a NL pennant, the bullpen is going to be imploded and completely reworked in the offseason. They will also probably sign a LF slugger.

Assuming they re-sign Perez, they'll have to replace Pedro in the rotation. Hopefully they do see he's useless now and let him walk. I can see them going after Garland.
It only took Pedro 6 innings to give up 4 runs compared to the usual 3 innings.

Mets officially suck ass... 0 runs against the Nats in the middle of a pennant race. Even if they come back this is just beyond sad. Phillies will probably end up winning the NL as much as that disgusts me. Might as well buy my Dodgers cap since the Cubs are lame as hell to root for as a casual baseball fan. You tend to root for that choke job in October. Sad thing is... between the Brewers and Mets you mgiht as well have the Mets in there. They'll probably get swept even if they make it. THey really don't belong in the post season. Get rid of the wild card and go back to the three team format right now Bud...
Spidey-Bat
09-16-2008, 09:43 PM
There never was a 3-team format for the playoffs. There was 2 divisions in each league: East and West.
Mets have a chance for the WC since the Brewers are a wreck. I think the Mets will make the playoffs. Philly won't win the NL. Cubs will. Even though they haven't won in 100 years, the Phillies have only won the WS once in their entire existence so they win in the futility category. Though I'm not one to give a **** about anything beyond 4 years ago.

C'mon guys win these next two games and you'll have clinched the division two years in a row for the first time in 100 years, when you won a certain something else. Last I checked, Albert Pujols wasn't on the Mets. In fact, no one on the Mets deserves the NL MVP. The only guy I see getting an award is Carlos Beltran who will probably win the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove. Maybe Wright will win the Silver Slugger. That's it. Those awards I couldn't care less about.
I would still give Manuel the MOTY award. What adversity has Lou had to deal with? It's pretty much just been Fukudome sucking. Manuel has had 3/5 of a rotation, a Russian Roulette bullpen, and played a good chunk of the season with 2/3 of the starting OF missing.

didn't soriano missed a month? and i remember Wood also missing some time. But i don't think its much about Lou dealing with alot of adversity in comparison to Manuel, but having his team being the top team in the NL for most of the season.

Yeah, Soriano was out twice, Wood missed about a month, he's been having a lot of issues lately with Zambrano also. He's managing a great season where everybody has been producing though, I think that's a huge accomplishment, sure the team has superstars, but they aren't carrying the team They've lead their division and maybe the entire NL since mid-May and have also done it as a complete team with no one player really dominating.
