I agree, but I think they should start looking for someone to succeed Rivera now instead of waiting for another 2-3 years when he retires. This team has to get younger if they want to be competitive in years ahead, because if they don't they will get worse every year. I've been a Yanks fan since '88, and I have experienced the lean years with Mattingly as the face of the franchise, so I don't mind too much if they suck for a couple of years as long I see some progression and improvement.

Getting a successor for Rivera is a waste of time. Maybe if he sucked this year, it'd be important but not now.
They have a much dire need for a younger replacement at catcher.

It's pretty clear this team is built to play only April to August. This will be their 3rd straight terrible September. 2006 they were not good but they had the excuse of they clinched early.

That's a misconception. Delgado and Beltran have been good this Sept. Beltran had a good Sept. last year. Alou did as well. Wright killed them last night and Reyes has been the one who has had bad Septembers his whole career (though he's been doing much better as of late). They need a real hitter in LF. Church is shot this year from his concussions (which were handled pathetically by the Mets) and shouldn't be playing. They got unlucky with Tatis going down. I personally hate Ramon Castro b/c he's a lazy fat ass and never loses any weight in the off-season. Easley's injury last year was a freak thing. This year it was from being overused b/c Castillo sucked.

Report: M's teammates weighed hurting Ichiro
An anonymous clubhouse insider told the Seattle Times that Mariners teammates were so annoyed with Ichiro Suzuki earlier this season that they considered beating him up.
"I just can't believe the number of guys who really dislike him," said the insider. "It got to a point early on when I thought they were going to get together and go after him." The coaching staff and then-manager John McLaren intervened when one player was overheard talking about wanting to "knock him out." Perhaps the goal would have been to knock him around like the rest of the league has done to Carlos Silva this year, but given Mariners' hitters reputations, it's likely that the team could land several blows and still not do any damage. It's not as though Richie Sexson had a chance of making contact. Sep. 25 - 1:28 pm et

I would have loved to see the Mariners beat up Ichiro just to see what MLB would have done to punish them. Probably nothing because of how powerful the Union is.
Seriously though, if that's true they should be fined 50% of their contract. Not only is beating up a teammate appalling, but Ichiro is like 5'8 and doesn't even weigh 200 lbs. Just goes to show how that franchise has plummeted beyond levels that really no team has ever reached in recent memory.
I don't think Omar's extension will be justified if Mets don't make the playoff.
I think it's justified simply because the team was a complete joke before 2005.

Royals 8, Twins 1. Booyah. Last year, it was big that we avoided 100 losses. This year, we're not going to have 90. And the talent is emerging. We've got some solid starters in Meche, Greinke, and Davies. Plus Duckworth may be getting another chance, and I am not ready to rule out Bannister yet. People like Leo Nunez and Ramon Ramirez have been great in the 'pen, setting up that artist we know as Joakim Soria.
And on the other side, Alex Gordon is showing his stuff, Billy Butler is getting ready to explode, David Dejesus is playing at an elite level, and Ryan Shealy has forced his way not only back into the line-up (after toiling most of the season in AAA), but probably back into the starting line-up.

Losing Wagner hurt because it threw a wrench in their pen. Their pen was specialist who only liked pitching in their specific roles. They had to abandon that and only 3 adjusted. The rest didn't or sucked from the beginning.
I guess...

Injuries happen. Not like they lost Beltran.
No but they had terrible production from their LF and RF. Teams are supposed to get more production out of those corner spots.
They play in a tougher division than the Mets. ANd they didn't hang on... it was the Mets that blew the lead...
They did hang on if it was the Mets that blew their lead.
Okay, now Mets is behind Brewers for the final wild card. Do they still have a chance? It seems like Brewers is in the driver's seat now.
Brewers need a win and Met loss to clinch the WC. They can't lose either.

Furthermore, look at this:
If Brett Myers puts up another lousy performance against the Angels, it's time to give his spot away. The guy has been playing like trash - with no signs of improvement.
I pray for that day. Charlie Manuel seems to have way too much faith in a pitcher who clearly hasn't earned it this year. And it's time to stop coddling him. Maybe a little fear for his spot will motivate him to get back on his game - if that's even possible at this point.
:wow: Comments I made long before the Phillies clinched their second consecutive Divisional title. Comments that were made when the Phillies were losing, thanks to Brett Myers' sour streak. Did I abandon the team then? No. No matter what Jimmy Rollins says, Philadelphia fans are definitely not fair-weather.

I still don't think Omar deserves the extension. Aside from the playoff 2 years ago, Mets have had big expectation and big payroll, only to falter late in the season and miss the cut. Omar should be criticized for nothing signing anyone to back up Wagner when he's getting older and prone to break down, and made Mets put up with a terrible bullpen. When Brewers which have a fraction of Mets' payroll and made the playoff, you know that isn't right.

He deserves 2 years, not 4. Theo Epstein (best GM in baseball) only got 3 years.
Omar should be criticized for nothing signing anyone to back up Wagner when he's getting older and prone to break down,
Why? There has been nothing to indicate Wagner was breaking down and needed an immediate successor. They drafted Eddie Kunz to succeed him but he didn't do well (partly b/c he sat for a week).
and made Mets put up with a terrible bullpen.
By the time Wagner got injured and the bullpen went into a tailspin, it was too late to do anything.
When Brewers which have a fraction of Mets' payroll and made the playoff, you know that isn't right.

I pick Dodgers because it's a 5-game series, and in this short series anything could happen. If Dodgers win the first game, I think the momentum will swing to their side and it will be enough for them to win at least 2 more. Besides, Torre is very experienced in postseason and Manny could get hot and give Cubs' pitchers alot of problems.

Playoff pool? I'm in.
I'll be in it, so we need at least 3 or 4 more people. I should have been on here a few days ago to set it up.

I don't care for Pierzynski either. Something about him I just can't stand.
He seems like a whiney assclown to me.

On second thought, I'm not doing the playoff pool. It doesn't look like anybody is going to join up in time anyway. I have to work 8-3 tomorrow and won't have any time to set it up.
Here's my picks.
ALDS
White Sox over Rays
Angels over Red Sox
NLDS
Dodgers over Cubs
Phillies over Brewers
ALCS - Angels over White Sox
NLCS - Dodgers over Phillies
World Series - Angels over Dodgers

Brad Lidge Earns Comeback Player of the Year (http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080930&content_id=3574728&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi)

Hopefully that is all he earns. I hear his name come up for the Cy Young. The only time a closer deserves it is like Gagne in 2003 when he has like 55 saves and got them all. Lidge had a great year but he only had 41.

Yeah...I'm not so sure he deserves the Cy Young. Glad to see he turned himself around though.
Who do you think will get it? Lincecum or Santana?

Who do I think will get it? Lincecum.
Who do I think deserves it? Santana because he had a lower ERA, more IP, better K/BB, better BB/9, better WHIP, faced better lineups, and pitched in bigger games.
Were Lidge and Lee both injured last year?
I think Lidge was but they both sucked and have turned their careers around.

I think both are deserving, but I agree that Santana had the tougher task...The NL West stinks.
I think Lidge missed some time...I think he had a knee issue that carried over to Spring Training.
Luis Castillo-2B-Mets Oct. 1 - 11:33 am et
According to the New York Daily News, "it appears straightforward that" Luis Castillo "will be dealt, with the Mets eating a large percentage of his remaining contract."
Castillo was signed to a four-year, $25 million last winter, but fell out of favor by midseason because of injuries and mediocre performance. Earlier this week the Arizona Republic suggested that the Mets and Diamondbacks could potentially swap bad contracts in Castillo and Eric Byrnes.

Luis Castillo is such a bum. If no one will take him they should just make him be a vendor at Citi Field.
The Castillo-Byrnes swap could solve both team's problems. Dbacks have a logjam in the OF and need a stopgap at 2B. Mets have no LF and could sign Orlando Hudson.
I like Byrnes' feisty attitude but he's so lousy. Outside of 2007, he's been the poster child along with Brad Penny for 2nd half dud.

I was rooting for the Mets last weekend. I didn't watch the closing ceremony for Shea but I was told that they did all this after they not only lost the game but lost the wild card spot?

They had planned it after the game for several weeks. I didn't like the idea but it worked. Instead of everyone's last memories of Shea being the thug Marlins knocking the Mets out, it will be Tom Seaver throwing the final pitch to Mike Piazza.
