Here we'll debate on which version of a song is better. Now, I know, many people think: "The original is always the best!" But it's not always the case...

Like our first song, Mad World.

Though I'm more used to the original...the cover has much more effect than the original IMO. It instantly puts you in a certain mood when you're listening to it. I've noticed that the mood is different for each person...but it definitely has an effect on people. Whereas the original only has nostalgia value for me.

We had a brief discussion a while back regarding Kate Bush "This Woman's Work" vs. Maxwell's cover of it. I actually heard Maxwell's version first, and I think it's a great song. I eventually heard Kate's, and while she gets much love for creating the song, I do find myself leaning more towards Maxwell and that falsetto of his.

I recently learned that Aretha Franklin's "Respect" was actually written and recorded first by Otis Redding and her cover kicks the original's ass by far.

The Electric Six cover of Queen's "Radio Gaga" was disappointing because it's just like a straight karaoke cover, bringing nothing new, except the singer's inability to sing like Freddie Mercury.

People were talking about Chris Cornell's cover of "Billie Jean", going "Wtf?! How could he do THAT?!?"
And I said, " He'll turn it into a mournful, acoustic ballad, kind of like a bluesy Johnny Cash song."

And, I just heard it and of course I was right.

I was blown away to hear that, probably with a little digital help, Fergie can actually sing, as she did a better than karaoke version of Heart's "Barracuda", though it's still Crap City, U.S.A.

I always loved that "Vulcan" song by Snake River Conspiracy (that singer was HOT! :(), so I was checking out their cover of "How Soon Is Now" by the Smiths, as well as Tatu's cover.
They both are musical crimes.

I suppose the Violent Femmes cover of T.Rex's "Children of the Revolution" was pretty good. Haven't heard it in years. Should revisit it.

In Dick Valentine's defense, there really isn't ANYONE on the planet who can sing like Freddie Mercury; to the point that Queen themselves brougth in a singer that sounds nothing like him at all because they couldn't find a suitable singer who could emulate him satisfactorily. I thought Valentine did an okay job on Radio Gaga, though I would have liked to have seen them do something different with that song and restructure it, as creative as those guys are. I know the record company basically MADE them put that on their record, though, despite their wishes not to do so. So, take that for what it's worth.

On average, I often prefer the original over the cover, though there are some instances where that doesn't hold true.

I like the punky balls required to brazenly do a Queen cover when you're not a vocalist-god...IF you do something new with the music to justify it.

If you listen to "Fun it" by Queen, heh, that would've been a better cover to do.
It sounds like a Queen cover of an Elextric Six song actually.

Queen wrote a lot of songs with some f**ked up, humorous lyrics and themes which is, of course, the mainstay of Electric Six's songwriting approach. I was sort of surprised they chose that song out out of all the Queen songs they could have done as well. Like I said, though, I've heard that the record company basically MADE them do that song for some reason, which they resented the hell out of.

Johnny Cash did a whole bunch of great covers, most of the time he'd just make such great, stripped down versions that surpassed the originals' feel and athmosphere

I'll add

New Model Army - the hunt

Sepultura - the hunt

Sepultura SLAYED the original, and I mean in a good way. They made it so much more angry (obviously) which suits the lyrical content so much better.

Disagreement. Lennon owns the song.

Hardly.

The Chairman
11-03-2007, 08:43 PM
Hardly.

Um, sorry. Lennon's version has far more warmth and he rocks the heck out of it during the solo. He really gets into the song and manages to reinvent it completely. Plus, and this may sound dumb, but I have a hard time disassociating King's version with that awful Sean Kingston song.

And here's my favorite cover of all time:

Song: Something

Original - The Beatles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cK_UBdnVHfc)

Cover - Frank Sinatra (http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=1&msgs=116084138d95f542&attid=0.1&view=audio)

Um, okay. I can honestly say unbiasedly I prefer Lennon's. Whatever, if I played Freddie Mercury doing "Imagine" or "Instant Karma" you'd automically say Freddie did it better. I've heard both versions of "Stand By Me" numerous times and I can honestly say I prefer Lennon's.

Here we'll debate on which version of a song is better. Now, I know, many people think: "The original is always the best!" But it's not always the case...

I think 311's version of "Lovesong" is better than The Cure's.

Yes, I said it. I will take the reggae'd up, sappy, lovey dovey version over Robert Smith's emo gloomy doominess. Deal with it. :o

(Cmill's thoughts and views expressed regarding this particular song do not reflect his thoughts and views towards the bands as a whole. 311 actually kinda sucks, and The Cure are The Cure. It just so happens that 311 made a superior version of "Lovesong" than the guys who made it in the first place.)

I don't see how it's creepy. If I was planning to resurrect his corpse to acknowledge the 10th anniversary of his death next month and perform various rituals and scrifices in his honor, than that's a little different. But I just have a deep connection with his music, something spiritual in a sense, it's hard for me to put into words without sounding like a freak. But tons of peole say that about The Beatles for years.

And my admiration of him goes beyond his talent and womanizing. Something neither Wilhelm nor JAL can boast about their respective celeb obsessions.

You know you love 'em...sometimes. I would like to see what other people think about cover songs. Do you have a favorite, or just one you absolutely despise? Is the cover better than the original, or just a hollow copy to you. I tend to love a good cover song. They usually are pretty fun when done right. Some of my favorites are probably by the White Stripes. I love the song Jack the Ripper. But my favorite right now that I listen to on a constant basis, is Hey Ya by Obadiah Parker. This stripped down version is way better for me, and it actually sounds meaningful in some way.

Jackson's "Come Together" was awful.

A few of my thoughts:
Come Together (Beatles) Best version: Michael Jackson (Aerosmith a close second.)
Disagree

I'll Be There (Jackson Five) Best version: Mariah Carey
Agree!

And I Am Telling You (Jennifer Holiday) Best version: Jennifer Hudson
Agree!!!

Superstar (The Carpenters) Best version: Luther Vandross
Agree.

I Will Always Love You (Dolly Parton) Best version: Whitney Houston
Disagree. :(

I didn't like Dolly's at all, tbh.

Dolly's is simple, beautiful, and classic. Whitney just wails all over it, and lacks the same emotion Dolly put into it.

Wouldn't be the first time someone disagreed with me on music. Oh, well.
Higher Ground (Stevie Wonder) Best version: Original
Do Me Baby (Prince) Best version: Original

Has anyone covered Queen's theme from Highlander? Just asking. . .

That song is too great to be covered :yay:

I love Lacuna Coil's version. Christina Scabbia has such a beautiful voice and it fits perfectly with this song.

I think the best version of "Ghost Riders In The Sky" was the one from the GR movie.
