Do any of you guys have this issue?

With the younger generation (people from around 18-20something) there seems to be a lack of national identity. They don't seem to want to identify themselves as Irish. I find this comes from middle class kids who probably think it would offend other people for them to identify themselves as irish. Its kinda annoying. And they talk about how they hate it here and can't wait to leave.

Some modern art...

http://image.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Travel/Pix/pictures/2005/08/05/belfast372.jpg

See, this is the kinda thing I find slightly annoying. Sure, its great that alot of money has been pumped into Belfast to make it better and look alot better too, but this modern art stuff... they're doing quite alot of it, but none of it has ANY relevance to Ireland, or Belfast, or history, or our culture, or anything. Its like people wanna brush over it. They wanna ignore it. There are so many nice things they could do that would be alot more meaningful than a big stupid fish.

I mean other modern art stuff, like the big stupid looking metal thing they wanna put at the bottom of ann street. It looks ridiculous and has no relevance to anything. I wish I had a picture.

i do agree though i hadnt heard about the thing at ann street. i'm kinda glad the titanic idea got shot down, they wanted to build a full size replica that would remain permanently in the lagan. but the idea would have got old pretty quick and the money could go to much better things

Don't you have to be pretty immature to get into an argument over whether its Derry or Londonderry?

Besides, its not in London, is it? Thats kinda retarded, if you ask me. Just logically speaking, and looking at it from no other angle other than logic, calling it Londonderry makes no sense.

And I'm about 90% sure it was legally decided this year in the courts that its Derry. But for some reason the news keeps referring to it as Londonderry.

I think really, people can call it whatever the hell they like.

If someone wants to call it Derry, don't be an ass and try to "correct" them. Same if people wanna call it Londonderry.

I was making a joke of it really.

But immature, religious, same thing really. One side calls it Derry coz they are Catholic and Irish and the other side calls it Londonderry coz they are Protestant and British. Hell when I was over there the road signs all say L’DERRY.

Coz he's a prod and on the other side it's the other Crazy god people...

Crazy Irish gos they believe in God but fight over it. Israel has different religions and fight over them but Ireland has one, Christians, and yet they still fight over it...

Religion in Ireland is more of a gang colour. You'll wear red, white and blue if you're a member of the Prodestant gang and Green and white if you're the Catholic gang... absolutely pointless if you ask me. But it sounds like your flat mate is sterotyping the rivers divide as people from different religions live on both sides.

Also my flatmates are "Brittish" yet are not from Britain... Work that one out.

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

If you are born in Ireland, North or South your nationality is Irish... as in Scotland is Scottish, England is English and Wales is Welsh

Don't you have to be pretty immature to get into an argument over whether its Derry or Londonderry?

Derry always has controversy... that's why it has so many damn names.

Stroke City, The Maiden City and The Walled City are just some of the names used so they don't offend anyone

Besides, its not in London, is it? Thats kinda retarded, if you ask me. Just logically speaking, and looking at it from no other angle other than logic, calling it Londonderry makes no sense.

It's got the London part in there as a link from centuries ago

And I'm about 90% sure it was legally decided this year in the courts that its Derry. But for some reason the news keeps referring to it as Londonderry.

Nope, still gonna have London in it. The Queen is apparently the only person who can change the name

If someone wants to call it Derry, don't be an ass and try to "correct" them. Same if people wanna call it Londonderry.

I play it safe on that regard... when I write to people who specify Londonderry in their address then that's their preference and I accept that, it's what they want and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Most of the population prefer to call it Derry, doesn't matter what side they're from

I was making a joke of it really.

But immature, religious, same thing really. One side calls it Derry coz they are Catholic and Irish and the other side calls it Londonderry coz they are Protestant and British. Hell when I was over there the road signs all say L’DERRY.

Trust me, I've been living with these people fore 4 years, I know all the crap that goes on in this stupid fight. We stole the Irish land and so that makes it our land... NI was only made in the early 1900's, that's how crazy it all is. But it's like talking to a little kid when you talk about this, "We took it fair and square!"

Being Scottish and having the love/hate thing with the English I kinda feel I side with the Irish on this one. Give them back there land.

I'm Irish. Northerner's are actually very happy about being under British rule, because of the healthcare system, unless they're Catholic.
As a Catholic Dubliner, I am very happy living in the country, speaking Irish, and getting into fights with burly Eastern Europeans you couldn't knock down with a bulldozer. Life is good.
