Del Rey Manga, Anime Selects Plan for NYAF
posted on 2007-12-04 10:53 EST
Del Rey hosts panels with Faust, Marvel; Comcast auditions Tokyo reporter

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Del Rey Manga will be hosting an industry panel, a spotlight on the editor of Japan's Faust magazine, and a joint announcement with Marvel Comics at this week's New York Anime Festival (NYAF). Dallas Middaugh (Associate Publisher), Mutsumi Miyazaki (Director of Licensing & Acquisitions), Tricia Narwani (Editorial Associate), Ali T. Kokmen (Marketing Manager), and April Flores (Publicity) will host the company's industry panel with new manga announcements on Friday, December 7. On Saturday, December 8, Middaugh and Miyazaki will host a spotlight on Katsushi Ota, the editor of Kodansha's Faust literary anthology magazine. Del Rey announced at October's MangaNEXT convention that it will publish selections from the magazine. Finally, Del Rey will co-host a panel with Marvel Comics on Sunday, December 9, and it promises that the two companies will make "a special announcement."

Anime Selects, the free anime Video on Demand service of the Comcast cable television company, is holding on-site auditions for Tokyo Reporter 2008 at the convention. Anime Selects sent its first Tokyo Reporter, Tasayu Tasnaphun, to Japan earlier this year to report on life in Japan's biggest city and the Tokyo International Anime Fair. Candidates for next year's Tokyo Reporter position can do an audition at the Anime Selects booth at NYAF or upload a video at the Tokyo Reporter website.

Whatever, so long as the manga doesn't mess with any good comics.

I wonder if Marvel is going to just distrubute books that Del Ray Manga publishes or if there's going to be some Marvel manga books coming out as a result of this deal.

TheCorpulent1

Does Del Ray actually create mangas? I was under the impression that they themselves were just the North American distributors for a lot of existing Japanese mangas.

That's what I figured as well. Maybe Marvel's going to...redestribute them...or something. I don't know. Maybe Del Ray's going to start making original mangas based on Marvel's characters.

Oh God, that would suck. :(

TheCorpulent1

Eh, they'll be out of continuity. Doesn't matter.

I'd be mad. Then sad. Then probably indifferent once I start ignoring it.

What if they make you start having to read it? Like, it becomes a part of the regular continuity. You'll buy Immortal Iron Fist #16 and it'll be continued in Go-Go Fists of Iron Moon Volume 4. What then?

Marvel Mangaverse: Round Two?

What if they make you start having to read it? Like, it becomes a part of the regular continuity. You'll buy Immortal Iron Fist #16 and it'll be continued in Go-Go Fists of Iron Moon Volume 4. What then?

His attack would be: Shadow of the Light!! Iron Fist of the Heart's Vengeance...soul...trapper...flannel!!!

And he'd have to say it every. single. time. Oh, and it would be followed up by three pages of it charging up.

And you just KNOW Orson will be revealed to be his long lost ancestor, turned corrupt eventually, and will be "fixed" after Rand gives this childish speech about love and family, where he'll sacrifice himself needlessly. :(

I would find whoever decided to call it "Go-Go Fists of the Iron Moon" and create my very own murder/suicide crime scene. :o

It's official. The X-Men and Wolverine are getting a Japanese makeover, courtesy of Del Ray Manga.

Yeah, I saw. Neither sounds interesting to me at all, but if it gets more people reading Marvel's other comics, more power to 'em.

I can see these pukes lining up in droves to buy the mangas, and still scoffing at the actual comic books.

Me too, but if it does get anybody new reading the normal comics, it'll all be worth it.

"It's the X-Men as you've never seen them before, with the storyline fashioned as a private school shojo comedy. As the only girl in the all-boys School for Gifted Youngsters, Kitty Pryde, a mutant with phasing abilities, is torn between the popular Hellfire Club, led by flame-throwing mutant Pyro, and the school misfits, whom she eventually bands together as the X-Men."

What the hell...?

TheCorpulent1
12-10-2007, 07:24 AM
They're retooling the X-Men to be more like every high school-based manga aimed at teenage girls ever, basically.

Advanced Dark

This isn't mainstream really. Marvel has been trying to find a product that appeals to younger girls so maybe this is a good start. I'll never buy it...but it's not for me.

I'm suprised. They must be trying to go classier manga style.

One, Wolverine doesn't look confused about his gender, and emo on impact.

And two, the women don't have boobs modelled after hot air balloons.

Magneto though? Stereotypical look for nobility and class in anime/manga.

All in all: It still looks horrible.

But it can be no worse than Marvel Mangaverse (hopefully).

Wolverine looks 12 years old. Why does Wolverine look 12 years old?

LouFerignoDemon
12-10-2007, 06:05 PM
Because it would be really confusing for a 40 year old Wolverine to give the 60(?) year old Magneto the "Love/Cherish/Childish/Best Friend/Give it your all/Whatever lame and naive" speech from a child's perspective to someone who's had time to think about the world, and convince Magneto his path is wrong with Wolverine's limited 40 year lifespan.

It makes MORE sense in anime that a 12 year old do something like that.

PhotoJones
12-10-2007, 06:08 PM
Dude, there's not much in anime/manga that does make sense, as far as I'm concerned.

LouFerignoDemon
12-10-2007, 06:10 PM
Yeah, especially the child telling down the adult with the "You have to put more effort, and use your heart, and soul, and love!" thing.

If the adult was capable of toppling a world, apparently he knows the meaning of effort.

They look like RPG character designs, so if the game comes out it'll already have that part done. I like Magneto's look though, suits him.

As long as the Xmen don't have poke balls, I think this series will be fine. I'd love to see Ghost Rider get the Nipponization treatment. Ghost Rider with Katana + Akira Bike = SWEET.

What??

Yeah the Xmen look Metrosexual and they look more like the KIDS of the Xmen, however if it draws more readers to Marvel, I wish them success.

Besides we can't say some Western artists know how to draw Marvel characters? Anybody remember Leifelds Captain America?

i highly doubt this'll get more people to buy regular marvel comics. if you need manga interpretations of western american comics, then you obviously don't deserve to buy them.

how the hell are metrosexual looking chracters are going to help a reader jump from manga to american comics, where sexuality is clearly depicted and proportionaly drawn anatomy is standard?!

Midnyte_Sun

Did you see the unproportional drawing above your post? American artists are not innocent either.

yeah and theres a **** load of artist on books right now that are better then him, plus he barely gets work from the big two.

and my point still stands, people who expect to bring manga readers over to regular comics are delusional.

Those people would be Marvel and the entire thing is about sales. It'll most likely sell by merit of the word "manga" alone. A lot of people hear that word and shop like beasts.

Personally Manga to me is pretty boring. I mean sometimes the story really gets going but usually its full of monologues, cheap jokes, and very loose plots that loose the reader quickly.
