I wasn't around to see him play at all but from what I've seen and the NFL Films documentary on him, Dick Butkus is a close second for my favorite football player. The commentary on that is hilarious:

"For Dick Butkus, football was never a game, but a street fight, a place for all out, no holds barred warfare. The NFL is filled with horror stories of tough men who have crossed him. His 9 year career stands apart as the single most sustained work of devastation ever committed on a football field by anyone, anywhere, anytime. To talk about him is to drain the vocabulary of superlatives. He was Moby Dick in a goldfish bowl. He was not a man who played as a Chicago Bear, but a bear who walked like a man."

Former Bears linebacker Ed O'Bradovich who played with Butkus: "Whenever me or another player would start tackling somebody he would scream "HOLD HIM UP, HOLD THAT ******* UP!" so he could come in full speed and just crush him. He tried to end people out on the field."
