BYU is in deep trouble, trailing TCU by a lot...

I was wondering how long it'd take them to lose, they've played garbage teams all season long.

Texas Tech's situation at place-kicker has evolved from a concern to a source of frustration. Now, it seems as if it has taken an unexpected, crazy twist.

Having already gone through two kickers - who have combined to miss six PATs and half of their field-goal attempts - the sixth-ranked Red Raiders are now seriously considering giving Matt Williams a shot against No. 18 Kansas this weekend.
Williams is a Tarleton State transfer student who won a month of free rent at the Tech/UMass game several weeks ago by kicking a 30-yard field goal. After his successful try, Williams was walking back to his seat when he was flagged down.
"They relayed a message to me saying that Coach [Mike] Leach wanted to talk to me," Williams told RedRaiderSports.com the next day. "He told me to come into his office on Tuesday and talk to him, and then Coach [Clay] McGuire told me to come and speak with him on Monday."
Initially, it was thought that Williams was ineligible this season due to transfer rules. However, according to McGuire - who heads up the Red Raiders' special teams unit, Williams has been cleared to play.
"That is the way I understand it, yeah," confirmed McGuire on Tuesday. "He's got a real good shot. Only Mike Leach could bring a guy out of the stands and make it work."
This wouldn't be the first time that Tech has relied on a non-scholarship kicker, although not quite under such unconventional circumstances.
"We have a tradition of walk-on kickers rising to the top," commented Leach after the UMass game. "[Robert] Treece and [Alex] Trlica both were walk-on kickers that eventually ended up getting to play significantly. We're always looking for guys. We're excited to see what [Williams]'s got to offer if he's interested."
What Williams offers, compared to Donnie Carona (http://texastech.rivals.com/cviewplayer.asp?Player=407179) and Cory Fowler (http://texastech.rivals.com/cviewplayer.asp?Player=64968), is something that is absolutely necessary for PATs: trajectory. "I've seen that guy try one kick," added Leach. "But the difference between his and the others is that they barely got off the ground. His got up right away."

Of course, it's a matter of opinion. But they have beaten several ranked opponents and their only loss was to the #1 team in the country, on the road, and their best player was out of the game. It wasn't a close game, granted, but their resume certainly is top 10 worthy.

Ref cleared after collision with quarterback... (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3654428)

The collision between South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia and umpire Wilbur Hackett Jr. in Saturday's loss to LSU has drawn a lot of attention over the past two days, but Game***** coach Steve Spurrier says Hackett did nothing wrong.

Hackett, a former linebacker at the University of Kentucky from 1967-70, ended up making contact with Garcia after the Game*****' QB rolled to his left and headed for the end zone in the second quarter. Hackett and Garcia collided at the 5-yard line as the LSU defense closed in.

"He was trying to get out of the way," Spurrier said of Hackett, according to The State in Columbia, S.C. "Stephen sort of cut back right into him. Sometimes that will happen."

When contacted by ESPN's Joe Schad, the Southeastern Conference office said after reviewing the play, it believes the umpire was in appropriate position. A spokesman said the umpire raised his arm to defend himself after a change of direction by the runner.

Garcia took over at the LSU 8 after a 46-yard interception return by Carlos Thomas. On first and goal, Garcia started running to his right before the hole on the line closed. He then rolled to his left and cut upfield, where he ran into Hackett.

Three plays later, Mike Davis scored on a 1-yard run to give South Carolina a 17-10 lead it would hold at halftime. LSU scored two second-half touchdowns for a 24-17 victory.

I think if, and I mean if Ohio State beats Penn State this weekend, they deserve to be in the top 5. I don't think they are as good as Texas or Oklahoma, but they have Beanie Wells back to near a 100%, Pryor looks good, not great, he needs to season, but he does live up to the hype for a freshman,
The Buckeyes have 2 tough games left, Penn State and Illinois, you can count Michigan in there if you like, they look tough at times, they will bring their A game when they visit Columbus.
I also agree with those who say they don't want to see OSU in the BCS title game, give someone else a chance to lose to either Texas or USC,lol.

Are you sure about that? Because if they lose to Florida, they won't have a shot at that opportunity. Also bear in mind that this Florida team just beat Kentucky by 58 points, and this same Kentucky team lost to undefeated Bama by merely 3 points.

But I digress. Tebow hasn't done much this year, but it's certainly not a bad thing. Demps and Rainey are both explosive runners and they've really negated the need for Tebow to play by himself. Florida's defense is much improved over last year. It's a tough game for both.

He has that body control thing down to a tee just like Moss did, which is the key to going to deep well and its also Calvin Johnsons only real flaw. Willingham To Walk Away From Washington's Woes (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3667258)
SEATTLE -- Washington coach Tyrone Willingham said Monday he will step down at the end of the 2008 season.

The embattled Washington coach fell to 0-7 on Saturday after a 33-7 loss to Notre Dame. Willingham and athletics director Scott Woodward made the announcement at a news conference.

Willingham has been under fire for being unable to turn around the Washington program. He is 11-32 overall in his four seasons with the Huskies. Washington currently has a nine-game losing streak dating back to last season, tied with North Texas for the longest in the country.

Woodward has said he did not want to change coaches during the middle of the season. But he said Monday's announcement ends speculation of what is going to happen with Willingham and lets the team focus on the final five games.
I thought he got a raw deal in South Bend, but the Huskies have been ass during his tenure.

Unable To Find Enough Teachers, Georgia District Cancels School (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3674820)
Call it a case of the Red and Black flu.

Tired of struggling to find enough teachers to staff its classrooms on the Friday before the annual Georgia-Florida football game, the Clarke County (Ga.) School District -- which includes Athens, home of the University of Georgia -- decided to cancel school altogether.

According to area media reports, 137 teachers last year called in sick the day before the big game, and the district was able to find only 113 substitutes.

School administrators studied the absences over the years and found a pattern -- almost twice as many teachers call in sick the Friday before the annual game in Jacksonville, Fla., about 360 miles away, than on an average school day.

So the district decided to call off school the Friday before the game. And Clarke County is not alone; the schools in nearby Madison and Oglethorpe counties also are taking the day off.

Although some parents and teachers are questioning whether the day off places too much emphasis on football over academics, at least one school administrator believes it's a wise move on the district's part.

"I've heard parents say that it's ridiculous, but the reality of the situation is, if there are so many people in this system and this community that go to the game -- if that's a reality -- it's irresponsible [to have school on that day] if that really is our community," said Barrow Elementary School principal Tad MacMillan, according to the Athens Banner-Herald. "I think the school system is wise to factor that in when they plan the calendar."

I think the contract expires after 2011... might be 2013... not sure exactly. I can see a plus-one after that... the Big 10/Pac 10 can't keep this garbage up forever... Those two conferences are what is holding college football back. I mean how the **** does Illinois play in the Rose Bowl last year? Anyhow, they won't do an eight team playoff and take the four BCS winners because they don't want to extend the season into the NFL playoffs. I'm speechless as to how horribly we're playing, but I use the word "playing" lightly...last time Tebow was our b**** all day long, now our line just opens and says "Have a touchdown, fellas" :whatever:

I just had a question as to how they break the tie in the college football divisions... I mean didn't Tennessee get in over UGA despite having a 9-3 record? I know they beat Georgia but didn't FLA beat them last year as well? How do they decide who plays in the title game with a three team tie? Not that it is likely to happen again this year.

It was really wacky. TN got in because they beat us, and didn't lose to anyone else. Had TN lost to Kentucky or Vandy (which they almost did), we'd have won the east. The loss last time to Carolina hurt too, but the thing is you can usually count on someone else to beat them and help you out.
As for now, we have to beat Kentucky, and FL would have to lose to Vandy and or Carolina for us to take the east, because we've already beaten those two.

Richt is gonna beat the team's collective ass when they get home.

Usually it's by who has more conference wins, but if it's a "tie", they look at the year's head to head matchups and who won em.

Longest streaks in the nation for bowl appearances and winning seasons ... gone. Bloody hell, Michigan.

At least the Canes finished strong and took it in Charlottesville.

Bout time we started looking like something at least SIMILAR to Miami Hurricanes! It's a good feeling, though. Good, solid win.

At the end of a game like this, a six-point lead feels worse than a four-point lead. With a four-point lead, a field goal won't beat you. But with a six-point lead, a TD will beat you by a point. Irrational, sure, but that's what it feels like to me.

FaT_tONle

And that clock management for Tech was brutal... I mean are these coaches stupid or something? Maybe spike the ball and save some clock... plus they still had a timeout and the kid throws a whaler up the sideline... I understand they needed to get closer but that isn't a high percentage play... the ball could have been picked... or had the kid gotten tackled at the one yard line as time expired... that would have sucked... USE YOUR DAMN TIMEOUTS DOWN THE STRETCH!!!!!!!

Tiebreakers with more than 2 teams are decided by the BCS rankings. As a Tech fan, I am hoping we can somehow beat OSU next week in Lubbock, then I am expecting a loss to OU. However, I'm hoping OSU then beats OU. That leaves both of them with 2 conference losses, and the tiebreaker comes down to Tech and UT...and guess who wins out in that scenario? :woot:

Assuming it doesn't affect my team, I usually root for the No.1 team to lose. And I was rooting for Texas to lose ... for 59:59 of that game. However, when the fans were too dumb to realize the game wasn't over ... TWICE ... and the TT coach inexplicably failed to go for two to make it a seven-point game -- just in case -- I wanted Texas to score the winning touchdown at the end. That would have been epic.

Yeah, that was awesome. We have some of the craziest fans. A guy showed up to one game a few years ago dressed as Rufio from the movie Hook.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v486/DonkeyPuncherJ/Rufio.jpg

The guy had an awesome costume. Looked just like the movie version.

We also have a lot of fans who dress up as Pirates at a lot of the games because of Leach's obsession with pirates. It's hilarious. The Joker makeup was just a great idea. I was wondering if someone would do that because his makeup matches Tech's color scheme. Glad to see a bunch of kids followed through on it. :woot:

OU will probably run the table up till the title game though... so I don't know who'd get the highest ranking... I'd say Texas because of their schedule. Tech is only ranked third (projected)... beating OSU probably won't change that... they won't jump to number 2 until they beat OU and are undefeated at that point. Texas will defenitely leapfrog the rest of those teams in the division if that's how it plays out.

And as I brought up before, what I am dying to see is an undefeated Penn St and two one loss champions from the SEC and Big 12. That would be just as good as three undefeated teams from major BCS conferences... and I think the ONLY solution that would make sense is to have a split national chamionship... match up whoever is number one against USC... pit the other two teams in the National Title game... and if the team that gets left out of the national title picture wins their BCS bowl... give them the AP Poll championship. THat would be the only solution. Still a long ways away from that though.

The OU/OSU game is in Stillwater. If you think OU is going to easily win that one, you're in for a surprise. They have lost in the past to much worse OSU teams in Stillwater. The current OSU team is great. OU will have a huge challenge on their hands in that game, and I can easily see OSU beating them.
