does Al Davis legitimately think that a 5th coach since Gruden is really going to help turn that team around, rather than talent?

Al Davis will never die.
While trekking through Florida back in the late 50's, in search of the perfect alligator from which to craft a most badass shoes and belt combination, he discovered the Fountain of Youth. After berating and chasing the occupying children away, he partook of the Fountain's unique waters and immediately uttered "Just Live, Baby."
Rumor has it that this expedition was led by a diligent scout of the monikker, 'Sandy Rob', an alias of the incomparable Demond 'Bob' Sanders.

Sorry, but he's the primary reason that team has floundered (and floundered and floundered). They are doomed to suck until he either sells them off or dies. It's the truth.

I honestly don't know what the hell Davis is thinking when he does stuff like this. His primary concern seems to be getting a coach who will STFU and let Al run the team however he wants to.

Kiffin's a good coach. Too bad he's not being given a chance to not only actually coach his own team and recruit how he see's fit, but to also build a program that could be successful. Coaches get ONE year to be successful with Davis at the helm. If they don't win a Superbowl in their first year on the job, he runs them out and gets another one.

I'm not going to make a new thread on this, not sure if it was mentioned here or not either, but apparently Dana Jacobsen has been suspended from ESPN for a joke, a JOKE, she made at a roast of Mike and Mike recently. Falcons Offense-TM-Falcons Jan. 25 - 7:43 pm et
Falcons named Mike Mularkey offensive coordinator.
At least this staff will have some substantial NFL experience. Mularkey isn't a sexy hire, but he's been a head coach before and will have complete control over the offense under defensive minded Mike Smith. Mularkey's play calling has been inconsistent, but he's mostly favored a power run scheme and likes using trickery. Atlanta holds the No. 3 overall pick in April, and TD-tossing Arkansas running back Darren McFadden will likely intrigue him.

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome "practically guaranteed" that Rex Ryan will be back as defensive coordinator in an interview with the Baltimore Sun Friday.
Jim Fassel approached Ryan about running the Redskins' defense, but the talks never got serious. The Redskins didn't even ask Newsome if they could interview Ryan. Newsome expects to hammer out a deal with Ryan soon.

In addition to making Derek Anderson a three-year contract proposal, the Browns are believed to have offered free agent Jamal Lewis a two-year deal.
Lewis is unrestricted, whereas the Browns hold Anderson's restricted free agent rights. Lewis has indicated he would take a shorter-term deal to stay in Cleveland. The two-year offer is likely in the $10-14 million range.

ESPN is saying that Davis wants to fire Kiffin in favor of Dennis Green, who last time i checked didn't exactly get Arizona turned around and since 2000 when the Vikings went to the NFC title game under him, he's done pretty much nothing.
Just win baby? Try 4-8 in the playoffs. While i'm sure the Raiders would love even sniffing the playoffs again at this point, Dennis Green isn't the guy who'll get that for them. Again, you cant make chicken salad with chicken s***, they need personnel, they need someone who actually has a clue about football (Al has clearly lost it) making decisions.

Redskins Defense-TM-Redskins Jan. 26 - 10:35 am et
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that Gregg Williams is officially out of the running for the Redskins head coaching vacancy.
Mortensen had previously reported that 'Skins owner Dan Snyder soured on Williams due to his alleged disrespect of Joe Gibbs after Williams failed to inform Gibbs of his plans for the Sean Taylor "10-Man Tribute". It sounds like Snyder is already running a transparent smear campaign against Williams to win public favor and that Williams' concerns about player personnel control got in the way. The lack of continuity on both sides of the ball is going to hurt Washington.

Dolphins Offense-TM-Dolphins Jan. 26 - 10:25 am et
Saints quarterback coach Pete Carmichael has emerged as the front-runner for the Dolphins offensive coordinator job.
Dan Henning was viewed as the favorite earlier in the week, but it appears that the Parcells coterie pictures Carmichael calling plays like a young Sean Payton.

Here's a fun fact.
The Giants and Patriots met in the final preseason game, the final game of the regular season and the final game of the postseason.
This is the 12th time that two teams that met in the regular season will square off in the Super Bowl. The team that lost that meeting has won 6 of the last 11 matchups. The last team to do it was the New England Patriots(who were 14-point underdogs) in Super Bowl 36 against the Rams. Rams won the regular season matchup, Patriots won the Super Bowl.

Does anyone else see the sweet justice in the fact that the Giants are in the SuperBowl and Tiki Barber is somewhere reporting on a giant rubberband ball or someone's amazing model train collection? Terrell Owens-WR-Cowboys Jan. 29 - 9:09 am et
An arbitrator reportedly ruled last Friday that Terrell Owens owes the Eagles $769,120.
The NFLPA filed a grievance on T.O.'s behalf when the Birds tried to recover $1.725 million of the $2.3 million signing bonus he got on a seven-year deal in 2004. Owens was suspended the final four games that season for "behavior disruptive to the team." His agent hasn't confirmed the report. T.O. is set to receive $7 million from the Cowboys in 2007.

Jamal Lewis-RB-Browns Jan. 29 - 8:43 am et
Browns GM Phil Savage predicts that the team will re-sign impending free agent Jamal Lewis.
He likened the Browns' initial two-year offer to the opening serve in a tennis match. "We probably didn’t get it over the net, but that was by design," Savage said. "It might be 11:59 PM the night before free agency starts, but I think we’ll get there." The Browns aren't afraid of lowballing Lewis, which isn't a surprise because he'd likely draw less attractive to other clubs.

The No. 21 overall selection in the 2005 draft has shown glimpses of becoming a starting caliber receiver, but is too inconsistent. Coach Jack Del Rio has reportedly stuck up for Jones to this point, but it wouldn't be a surprise if the Jags shop him for a mid-round pick during the offseason.

I don't doubt that he is content. How can't he be? He's rich and he gets to be on tv all the time, which is apparently important to him. The Chicago Tribune suggests the Patriots could place the franchise tag on prospective free agent Randy Moss this offseason.
The 2008 franchise number for wide receivers is only $7.848 million, so it will likely be a consideration. Still, the Pats figure to make Moss a multi-year proposal initially that would keep his cap charge at a more reasonable rate.

Rams hire Al Saunders to coordinate offense
Rams hired Al Saunders as offensive coordinator.
Finally, the Rams get something right. Saunders, a receivers coach during the Greatest Show on Turf Era, is very close to Torry Holt. After seeing Holt and Scott Linehan's interactions last year, Saunders will be a welcomed addition. Saunders runs a Mike Martz-style offense, but his play calling is less pass heavy. The hire is promising news for all Rams skill players. Jan. 30 - 5:53 pm et

Chad Johnson-WR-Bengals Jan. 31 - 9:32 am et
Chad Johnson told the Boston Globe reporter that he is "going to be playing for your team next year," referring to the Patriots.
The Globe says Johnson was "passively campaigning for a trade." Chad was also on the radio in Charlotte this week to say "85 + 89 = Super Bowl, period." 89, of course, is Steve Smith, Johnson's former JUCO teammate. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis had no comment on Chad's antics Wednesday.

Chad Johnson-WR-Bengals Jan. 31 - 1:26 am et
Chad Johnson elaborated about his discontent with the Bengals on the Jim Rome show Wednesday, saying that "it's been bad" in Cincinnati.
"I’m the scapegoat," he said. "Someone in-house is spreading this. Maybe they want me to quiet down (and) stop being me." There is speculation that agent Drew Rosenhaus is on a mission to get Johnson traded. "There is a lot of frustration with things that happened last year," Rosenhaus said. "What Chad is doing (in interviews) is expressing his emotions and frustration."

Tom Brady-QB-Patriots Jan. 31 - 11:49 am et
Tom Brady says that if his mild high ankle sprain was truly a problem, he's "sure coach (Bill Belichick) would have listed it" on the injury report.
"I don't think it's a problem," Brady said. "I think the right shoulder is probable. It's a little fatigued. I'll try to move around the best I can and make all the throws." Brady will almost certainly be listed as probable on the Pats' final injury report Friday. That listing would mean he's virtually certain to start.

NFL Players Association director Gene Upshaw expects the owners to terminate the current Collective Bargaining Agreement in November 2008.
That would make 2009 the last year of the salary cap, and 2010 an uncapped year. The players are not expected to agree to another salary cap if it gets to that point. Upshaw says the NFLPA won't hesitate to strike. "This isn't hockey, where the players agreed to a 25 percent pay cut," a defiant Upshaw said. "We're not going to do anything like that."

One person who might face the committee would be Matt Walsh, a Patriots employee between 1996-2003 who worked in the video department. Mister J
02-01-2008, 08:33 PM
That trade doesn't really make sense on either side. I'd rather Miami shop the #1 pick, but Dallas is all the way down at 22. That's ridiculous, even with Barber coming in. We've got Brown, and with all the other areas that need addressing, why move for an overload at RB? Chatman is a decent enough #2 back. Unless Parcells would have another transaction to deal Barber for some better fitting personnel, it doesn't make sense. I don't buy it from Miami's perspective.
On top of that, Jones doesn't need to get the top pick to get McFadden. I doubt the Rams want him.

How in hell did Chris ****in Carter not get first ballet entry? I thought that was a lock to end all locks.
Also - Ray Guy deserves in. He was the best player IN his position. EVER. That is HOF credentials right there.
I agree with you on both counts. Both Carter and Guy should've made it in along with DT.
As Cmill said, what a boring class. :o

Darrell Green should have made it
Art Monk has to make it, he's been screwed too many times.
Cris Carter not getting in is an absolute joke.
It's times like this that make me wonder if the NFL coordinates who gets in the Hall of Fame. Because right now it's going to be SWARMED by Redskin fans, and last year it was SWARMED by Cowboy fans. It seems they might be doing this based on financial benefits more than players who actually deserve to be in.

It was time for Art Monk and Darrell Green, no problem with them at all.
I can't believe Richard Dent is still waiting. His numbers match up with all of the greatest pass rushers and, at times, he was one of the most dominating players on the most dominate defenses of his time (possibly of all time).
E. Nygma
02-02-2008, 08:30 PM
Cris Carter, is at least one of the 10 best receivers to ever play. This is including the unretired guys such as Harrison, Moss, Owens and of course the retired guys such as Jerry Rice, Tim Brown and Steve Largent. How does that not merit being a first ballot Hall of Famer?
Jerry!
02-02-2008, 08:32 PM
What's worse is that there was no attention on the fact that Dent again missed the Hall of Fame, this time he didn't even make it to the final 10, in which years before he had gotten that far. He made probably the biggest plays on some of the best defenses of all time and was the Super Bowl XX MVP. Too much stupid bull**** is involved with Hall of Fame voting committees. The NFL and MLB especially. The MLB, in my eyes, is a bigger joke.

Andre Tippett got in, primarily playing for teams that never won ANYTHING. Dent was a dominant force on some dominant defenses on some successful teams. They never pay enough respect to players on the defensive side of the ball, and when they do, it's never the right guys!
Derrick Thomas is the best pass-rushing linebacker of ALL-TIME. He died during his playing career yet he STILL should be in the Hall of Fame by now. What is this!?
steintym
02-02-2008, 09:59 PM
I'm a little surprised Tippett made it. I'd have to take a closer look at his career, but I guess I always thought of him as a pretty good player but not HOF material. Especially when he's beating out players like Dent and Derrick Thomas.
E. Nygma
02-02-2008, 11:10 PM
well i think Emmitt Smith is eligible next year, so he's in. I guess Carter would have to go in as well. Which will make that a solid class.
Skins a lock for the Hall of Fame game this year? Green and Monk being inducted to the hall and all.

Brady used to be such a dork, but now that hes dating models hes getting pretty boi'd up.
Cris Carter should've been a first ballot hall-of-famer. Then again, this really seemed like an "I'm sorry we screwed you in the past" year.

Report: Ravens 'seriously considering' McNabb
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the Ravens are "seriously considering" pursuing Donovan McNabb in an offseason trade.
Mortensen says any deal would have to include the Ravens' No. 8 overall pick, which the Eagles could use on a wideout, defensive end, or offensive tackle. Mort also confirms that, while it may seem awkward, re-acquiring Derek Anderson is a distinct possibility for Baltimore. It is pretty clear that the Ravens intend to upgrade their quarterback situation this offseason. Feb. 3 - 11:43 am et

RYAN SEACREST AND THE RED CARPET!?!? Are they planning on talking about...I dunno...the game? Fox's pre-game team sucks (Give me J.B., Dan, Boomer, Shannon, and The Coach. :cmad:) However, Aikman and Buck are the best commentating crew in the NFL.
