Once again, I am your host for the Hype Super Bowl party! This thread also counts as the official Super Bowl thread (for anyone else considering making one) as it included a "who will win?" poll. So bring on the discussions and picks.
The two week party begins right here :word:

To answer Kain from the other thread, the Packers were trying to run the ball but the Giant defense was just shutting them down.
And I really don't know why they didn't put an extra man on Burress. Oh well, went in the Giants favor.

In regards to what Zen said in the NFL thread:
you know...
every message board i go on its clear,
the giants could steam roll the patriots, or fight it out tooth and nail and it simply doesn't matter...
to everyone but giants fans these wins are because of luck, not because the G-men are SERIOUSLY putting it together in the post season...
the giants CLEARLY out played the pack and all im seeing is GB lost the game... favre lost the game, but honestly the giants could have taken this game numerous times before favre threw that interception. The giants earned this game.
I hope strahan gets his ring, and i wonder if Tiki is regretting his primadona choice to leave while he still had plenty of gas in the tank.
Go Blue
I tend to agree with you. People always say "Well the Packers or the Cowboys are the better team" or "The Colts should have played in the AFC championship as they were the better team than San Diego." I say that is a load of ****. That is why we have play-offs...The Giants beat the Cowboys and the Packers, the two best teams in the NFC. That makes them the best team in the NFC. Plain and simple. Doesn't matter if they lost to these teams during the regular season. They beat them when it matters, they are the better team.
As for the actual Super Bowl...I'll say this...the one thing worse than the Patriots are the Patriots when they are pissed off. The Patriots have been hearing for weeks now that if the onside kick went the other way, the Giants would've beat them and they could kiss their undefeated season goodbye. Darth Hoodie is going to use that to get his team fired up like no other. I wouldn't want to be in the Giants' shoes going into that game.

In all honesty, you sound like a Chicago fan at this point last year :cwink: But comeon, you are talking as a fan. In all reality, there is no way to not pick the Patriots for this game. I've never been a big Pats fan. I'd like to see the Giants do something to knock them off their pedestal and take the big game away from them. I'm an underdog kind of guy, I suppose. It'll be tough to do it, but they certainly are capable and absolutely anything can happen in the Super Bowl.

Why's that?
It's what this thread will most likely turn into..."I hate the Patriots because Belichick wears a hoodie." "I hate the Patriots because Tom Brady smiles." Which I never actually complain about, because it is somebodys opinion, which is fine. Problem is, when you try to talk about the Patriots or the NFL in an educated manner, alot of people are just like, "Patriots suck!" yet if you would say that about "their team" they would go off on a tangent about it. It is just hilarious to me.
This isn't directed at everybody of course, there are so many intelligent NFL posters in there.
Just an observation.

The Giants completely beat the Packers at everything they wanted to do yesterday. They didn't allow any big runs after the catch (except the Driver TD). They dominated the Packers L.O.S, kept Grant at bay and made Favre have to throw on the run forcing some bad passes and two picks.
They completely deserve to be in the Super Bowl, i am in a state of shock that they are. I picked them to be one of the worst teams this year, and when they started 0-2 i said they would be even worse than i thought.
Well they got it done, on the road, playing very solid football. They played with much more discipline than in previous seasons. They have had solid contribution from their run game even without Barber. Strahan and the defense have been solid all year.
Dont count the Giants out from winning the whole thing, i picked against them every week in the playoffs and they've made me look like an idiot. I expect the Patriots to win, but the Giants already proved they could hang.

Of course I voted for my favorite team the Patriots to win it all and make history as the second team to win it all undefeated. However, anything can happen at the big dance, and even if the Pats lose, it'll be cool to see Eli Manning get a ring so he can be out of his brothers shadow.
Either way I think it's going to be a great game and I also think it'll be a close one as well.

Colts Defense-TM-Colts Jan. 21 - 3:06 pm et
The Colts have called a 4:30 ET press conference to announce the future of head coach Tony Dungy.
Owner Jim Irsay told ESPN's Chris Mortensen he got the feeling late Sunday that Dungy was "leaning" towards returning to Indy, but that may be wishful thinking. We should know for sure within the next few hours.

Ravens Offense-TM-Ravens Jan. 21 - 3:00 pm et
An NFL source tells the Palm Beach Post that ex-Dolphins coach Cam Cameron could be introduced as Baltimore's new offensive coordinator by Monday.
One source says Cameron is "close" to finalizing a deal, while another says that the Ravens are deciding between Cameron and Eagles QBs coach Pat Shurmur. New coach John Harbaugh is trying to assemble his staff as quickly as possible. He's also trying to retain defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.

Rivers' knee scoped before AFC Championship
Philip Rivers revealed Monday that he had arthroscopic knee surgery before Sunday's AFC title game. He will need more surgery this offseason.
The scope was performed to clean out cartilage in Rivers' right knee; he'll now need his right ACL repaired. This makes Rivers' effort even more courageous, but could cost him all of the offseason. Depending on the extent of Rivers' ACL procedure, it could even threaten his availability for Week 1. Jan. 21 - 4:05 pm et

LT wasn't injured during the game. His knee wasn't at 100% and the coach benched him. So it's not his fault that he couldn't be out there.
Jerry!
01-21-2008, 04:18 PM
Well it's the biggest game of his life. And I think it played a pretty big part of why the Chargers had trouble in the red zone. Turner had Rivers play on one leg but LT, who was supposedly the healthiest out of the 3 main guys injured (Gates) on offense, didn't go because he wasn't 100%. Ehhhh I don't know if I buy that. I think if he really wanted to, he could have gone back in the game.

Oh I agree with you. I find it funny that he plays 2 series then is benched the rest of the game. I kinda wonder if it was worse than what we were told.
Jerry!
01-21-2008, 04:24 PM
But my problem was that if it really was worse, why wasn't a trainer looking at him or why didn't he go back to the locker room for a check up or something. He just sat there in his jacket and helmet on the bench entire game. Doesn't look too good.
NewYorkSpider
01-21-2008, 04:27 PM
The excuse we got is that Turner gave them the best chance to win. If LT was at 90%, they could have at least used him in the red zone like you said. I really don't know what to think of it.

We'll see, they played us good last time and Id have defiently taken the Packers over them. But let's see...after what Randy did to them last time, I expect them to try and take him out of the game ala Jacksonville and San Deigo. That would leave Brady with Wes, Donte, Watson and Faulk, which will all have good games. But I believe the current mvp of the playoffs for the Pats will once again be called upon, and hopefully be ready to deliver as he has over the past 5 weeks.
Laurence Maroney has established himself as big time weapon; his taking over of the game in the 2nd half yesterday is stuff of legends. He's the hottest, one of the most talented, and least talked about and game planned of all the Pats big stars, and teams have been forgetting him.

Chargers QB Rivers no longer has ACL
Philip Rivers no longer has an ACL in his right knee, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
While this is a scary injury and Rivers will need a reconstruction of the knee, John Elway played 16 years without an ACL, so it's been done before. Rivers maintains that he will be ready by the start of training camp, but previous timetables regarding these injuries indicate that's optimistic. Carson Palmer had a similarly timed injury and made it back for Week 1, but wasn't quite the same for a while. Jan. 21 - 5:54 pm et

Its the one time I will agree with the Chargers players flapping their mouths after the game.

Yeah if that's his last play in his career, literally throwing away the Super Bowl, I couldn't have scripted it better. I doubt it is his last, but still I don't need another Favre Kodak moment in the Super Bowl, even if he doesn't win it. Favre lost the tiniest bit of respect I had for him last season.

I understand that Favre's a god because he's been such a terrificly above average quarterback for a good fifty years now, but for all the good he's done in his career, how many times has this cat cost his team big games?
Take last night for example. Those two interceptions he threw were horrendous. Especially the first one, where he seemed to be playing a game of "Throw The Ball In The Air And Maybe Somebody On My Team Might Catch It".
Look, he's a first ballot Hall of Famer, and I'm not trying to knock the guy off John Madden's turkey flavored pedestal. But for all the good, all the records, games, stats, yatta yatta, he has a lot of really critical bad plays on his resume, too.

We can wait for his career to be over to call it, but the guy's going to his fourth Superbowl in seven years, and he's already won three for himself. Not many other QB's can say that much. Also, his stats are pretty incredible and he hasn't even had all-star receivers up until this year with Moss.

Kornheiser wouldnt accept Favre cost his team the game on PTI.
Because the Packers wouldn't have been in the game if not for Favre. For all the mistakes he does - he makes up for them 10 fold.
Favre didn't cost his team the game. He didn't let Burress walk through the secondary. He didn't let a Rookie WR win the battle against an elite CB. He didn't let Bradshaw run for yards when it counted.
The Packers lost the game as a team. Hell - if it wasn't for a high snap by the center, the Packers would of lost the ball before Favre had the chance to "cost his team the game".

An orthopedic expert tells the New York Post that the "cam walker" Tom Brady wore on Monday was the result of trauma to Brady's foot.
"This is not just a simple strain or a sprain," Dr. Rick Positano says. Positano speculates that Brady may have an Achilles' injury, though it's worth noting that the NY Post column is extremely biased against anything Patriots. Patriots spokesman Stacey James had no comment on Brady's injury.

Profootballtalk.com reports that there are "rumors" in Mobile, Alabama that Carnell Williams' career is in jeopardy following his torn patellar tendon last season.
Keep in mind these are just rumors, not a report. But this goes along with a Yahoo report last October, and a note from the St. Petersburg Times last week that Williams may not help the Bucs in 2008. This makes it more important that the Bucs re-sign Earnest Graham. They will probably add another decent back, possibly in the draft. Jan. 22 - 10:37 pm et

Perfect season. It'll be in the record books. Though an upset would engender more talk for a week, it'd die down.

Did anyone else hear about this
One of the rumors making the rounds in Mobile is that the career of Buccaneers running back Cadillac Williams could be over.
Williams blew out a patellar tendon on September 30, during a game against the Panthers.
If Williams cant return, its another argument against using a high first-round pick on a running back. The financial investment is enormous, and the running back is always one play away from a serious, if not permanent, injury.

Report: Ravens add Cameron to offensive staff
Pro Football Talk reports that the Ravens have added former Dolphins coach Cam Cameron to their coaching staff.
Though no title has been released, it's believed that Cameron has beaten out Eagles QB coach Pat Shurmur as Jon Harbaugh's offensive coordinator. Cameron's experience with LaDainian Tomlinson and Ronnie Brown bodes well for Willis McGahee's 2008 production. Jan. 23 - 11:25 am et

Lions won't bring back DT Shaun Rogers
St. Petersburg Times writer Rick Stroud reported on ESPN's First Take that the Lions will look to trade Shaun Rogers. The Detroit Free Press has confirmed via a source that Rogers will not be brought back in 2008.
Rogers can be a dominant force inside, but the Lions are clearly frustrated by his failure to stay consistently productive and in shape. If the Lions can't deal him, Rogers is expected to be released. Detroit should be able to get a first-day pick for the 28-year-old, but probably not a first-rounder. Jan. 23 - 11:06 am et

Thank God... maybe Millen is finally starting to get his head out of his ass.
Rogers came to training camp incredibly overweight, and didn't look even DECENT halfway through the season.

Mike Smith to be Falcons coach? Looks like it..http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/falcons/stories/2008/01/23/coachsmith_0123.html
Mike Smith has been offered the Falcons' head coach job and the team is currently in contract negotiations with the Jacksonville defensive coordinator, according to team officials. An official announcement on the hiring of Smith is expected later today.
Smith, 48, has been the Jaguars' defensive coordinator for six seasons. Smith replaced current Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio as linebackers coach in 2002. He was in Baltimore from 1999 to 2001, serving as the defensive assistant/defensive line coach for the Ravens.

I don't think so. They're in Bristol man, there's no way that they would keep bringing it up.
And 19-0 would be a lot more memorable. It will probably never happen again. There will always be big upsets.

It would be a big upset, not the biggest. That's why I have to say that the Patriots going 19-0 would be a more memorable moment. Two words: free agency. It may never happen again. The Patriots would dethrone th 85' Bears as the best single season team of all time. **** the Dolphins.

True, but even I, a Giants fan, never saw them getting this far. They just weren't good enough, but they're still around and they're the only team that can keep the Pats from being truly perfect.

For the short term, a Giants upset would be bigger news then the perfect season. I think the impact of this would eventually die down some. The Pats running the table would be history and would be brought up every season, every Super Bowl, etc. The comparison to other great one season teams would be endless.

Wow - That's tough. I remember the concern when he was drafted was whether he'd be able to take the pounding in the NFL. He's been beat up since he entered the league (although he did have a successful rookie year).

Brett Favre has opted out of the Pro Bowl. He'll be replaced by Jeff Garcia.
