Has there been any clear info on the actual "style" of this film. Obviously, it is live action and we have already seen the orange gi's, so do you feel they will try to stick with a very vibrant color scheme to keep an anime feel, or will they go a more 'live action' or serioues route with a darker scheme, possibly a color filter that so many movies use now.....
your thoughts...what would you like to see?
They seem to be going the 'brights' route, but we should really wait and see - a lot of people have raised the interesting point that the colour could be neutralised a little in editing or colour filtering.. or whatever the technical term was that seemed so clever at the time
Although it's nice to see dedication to the manga/anime, I'm not sure it'd be a great route for a live action adaption as it might be impossible to take seriously. I liked what they did with the X-Men costumes (and the in-joke reference to Wolverine's yellow spandex 80's costume in X1). Something in between reality and the anime would be just perfect for me - like an adaptation of Goku's gi, and the sketches that people have suggested for Piccolo. How about you?

I would to see it look like the images in "Hero" with Jet Li.
This story line is so completly fantasy. You couldnt pull off a reall life senario. So, they mine as well have fun with it, make the grass fields super green, really blue skys. Why not right?

Hard to say at this point what they exactly will be going for in a art direction, I can only hope that they atleast bring in the elements of what Dragonball had and translate them well enough into reality.
The Kid

The costumes look like something out of double dragon so that's not a good sign. But what i'd want them to do is watch any old school martial arts movie from jackie chan to bruce lee to jet li to give it an authentic asian feel and mood. And considering the director's asian, that could very well be the case.

Um.. James Wong is American and his background has been in American TV/Film... Just because he's ethnically Asian doesn't mean he can give an "authentic asian feel and mood".... He's mostly known for Sci-Fi.
The Kid

My point is he's ethnically asian and therefore has first hand experience being one which might give the film a better chance of feeling nothing like the last dragon.

i won't really judge the art direction until i see Picollo, but if the Goku-looking costumes are anything to go by....then the art direction probably won't be that great. Chatwin's hair in a semi mo hawk doesn't really give me much confidence either considering long, spikey hair is one of the staples of DBZ imagery.
as for James Wong, he's never really done a stylized movie. the worlds of Final Desination and the One were realistic for the most part and the fact that he's trying to ground DBZ in a semi realistic world doesn't sit well with me. imo, the last thing DBZ needs is realism. sorry to say but i don't think this movie will even come close to the style of the very anime-inspired Speed Racer movie. it'll probably be more in tone with Dead or Alive or maybe Kill Bill without the style. unfortunately, i don't think we'll be seeing too many jaw-dropping locales or costumes.
like i said though, i won't really judge anything until i see Picollo. for me, him along with Goku's costume will be the deciding factor on the art direction of this movie.
Hey Dorky, check out the picture up on my blog and tell me what you think of Goku's hair. The quality isn't so great but I think it actually looks pretty nice. Definitely better than the first side view we got and better than the second picture we got (which appears to have just been short and neat because Chatwin wasn't in hair/make-up yet).

...it's embarrassing for me but each of those hairstyles took no longer than 15 minutes, which goes to show that a faithful DBZ look can be done for a live action movie in a timely fashion. that's taking into consideration that i'm not even a hairstylist, my hair is thick and stubborn, and at the time, it wasn't even that long...

no more insane than giving live action Bulma unnaturally colored hair or having a green alien fighting a human-looking alien. it's a movie.....not real life. besides, if you read my post (you obviously didn't) you would see that i said that those hairstyles only took 15 minutes each with my thick, stubborn hair.....far from a week.
question for you....do you or do you not agree that my hairstyle looked more like Goku's than that picture of Chatwin's?

For the most part I agree with Dorky, the whole Chatwin hair thing seems somewhat uncared for. I understand that they have tried to give him a spike but from Dorky's own hair you can clearly see that there are more options. Hell, that bottom middle one I would pass off as Vegeta (perhaps pull all the fringe back), but I think length is key, you can do more with it. Only negetive thing I can see with long compared to short is when he fights depending on his movements and battle damge it could be harder to look natural while the short hair could still have more control.
DorkyFresh

i see your point about the hair taking damage, but imo that would add to the effect. case in point...Wolverine's hair always has those 2 points, but after a fight his hair is all jacked and hanging everywhere. it adds to his character and emphasizes that he's been through a battle...much like people after sex, hehe.
anyway...i'd like to bring up another guy who does the "spikey hair" better than me...Ryan Conferido of "So You Think You Can Dance" fame...

I see your point.. but his hair and your hair look the same to me.
DorkyFresh
01-30-2008, 01:09 PM
well they're not. if you look carefully, his hair looks like it's divided into a few sections or at least 2. the middle/top section of his hair (from one corner of his forhead to the other corner) spikes straight upwards and the left side of his hair looks significantly shorter than the middle/top part. mine hair, on the other hand, is consistent for the most part and the spikes jut out in EVERY direction.....not just upwards like Chatwin's. there's definitely a difference...
....still, Ryan Conferido shows that fully faithful Goku hair can be done.
Okay it's good enough, let's move on. I'm done talking about your hair.

I like that Chatwins hair doesn't seem full of product though. And that is one thing I don't like about some (not all) of your examples.
if you ask me, i'd say the opposite...it DOES look like it's full of product. hair doesn't really shine unless it's full of product and there's a pretty good shine on his hair...about as much shine as mine and some of Ryan's. regardless of how the hair is done, it would be next to impossible to make someone's hair look like Goku's without that shiney effect unless you charged them with a lot of static, but Ryan comes close with this picture...
http://a718.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images01/2/l_afaace8f975989dddc50644faf1ea59d.jpg
...still Goku-ish but not much shine. on the other hand, you can see the shine on Chatwin but his hair is not Goku-ish. if anything, it's more like Yamcha's (tall on the top, shorter on the sides). the only real difference being that Yamcha's hair is more even while Chatwin's comes to a point at the top...

his hair doesn't look shiny there because it's totally different lighting. for one, he's outside in the daytime and for 2 the camera isn't close enough to project the flash onto him. that shiny hair only happens when the camera is close enough for the flash to hit the hair and it has to be either in a dark environment or a dimly lit room.
regardless, like i said, the latest pictures shows that he has product in his hair...so if they're gonna fill his hair with product, the least they could do is make it resemble Goku's hair a bit more than just combing the top part of his hair straight upwards.

i edited my post. i brought up the point that Ryan Conferido is able to breakdance and end his sessions with his hair looking almost as good as it did when he first started. if he can manage his hair just fine then a person with martial arts experience would be able to do the same with no problems considering breakdancing requires a person to constantly roll, flip, and spin on the floor.
and some other also posted that dont require gel can only be done with asian peoples hair...

more b.s.! you can pull off that kind of hairstyle as long as the person's hair isn't wavy or curly. in fact, white people tend to have thinner hair which is usually easier to style than thicker hair which is more stubborn and harder to style.
I wanna see some Piccolo pics, that should define the "art direction" of this movie. Not Chatwin's hair at a dinner.

Hmm, my opinions on the direction of this movie is a little up in the air, and I don't want to jump the gun on it. On one hand they seem to be keeping up with the source material for the most part, but on the other hand it still has that "rushed and cheap" feel, and the casting could have been handled a bit better. It kind of bothers me that if they are remaining true to the original manga/anime that it won't get the attention it needs, I can't help but think that after the movie has been released people will say "that's the Dragon Ball I know and love but if only they put more time into it it could have been so much more grand". I have made some comments in the past about how DB has the potential to be something as epic as Lord of the Rings, I still believe it could have been, and considering that they remain true to its original form, I can't help but think it's a wasted effort and, dare I say it, if you are going to do a half cut job then you shouldn't touch it at all. I still could be wrong, and for the sake of this movie I hope that I am, but that's the way I feel at this current time in its production. I guess I'll have to wait until I see a teaser/trailer to get a better idea.
