View Full Version : Punisher: Warzone new date January 2009

At least it appears that way which is understandable considering the delay and the fact that not only does September usually suck at the box office but also several Jan 2009 films have moved to later dates....and Marvel only has Wolverine in 2009.

Note: New synopsis there too...or I think it's new.
Well, isn't this a good sign.

I don't think it's a bad sign. It's not like Ghost Rider being delayed a year and it's a typical release date move. Remember the weather caused a delay in filming and they may not have wrapped the final part yet. Also September blows as a release date for this kind of film IMO....even October would have been better. January isn't the best either but the competition is better IMO.

This isn't a release from Marvel...it's from Lionsgate. :) Daredevil and GR also broke 100 million. :) Those are the best Marvel films though I agree. Still nobody ever expected a Punisher film to go up against any blockbusters in the Summer while Daredevil and Ghost Rider had a chance and were healthier budgeted films.

Well, I'm just going on the trend of a Marvel movie released in January. They haven't been good.
Also, I looked on Marvel.com and saw nothing about the date change.

Well you didn't look very well. It says coming January 1st, 2009. That's a Thursday so it's probably just a placement date. I'm waiting for someone in production to confirm the date change to me or if it was a misprint by the site. I'll let you know what I'm told.

i think it's just a mistake on Marvel's part. If it was changed, why wouldn't they have an annocument on the main movie page saying so? Plus, if it's in September I can see it for my birthday.

Read my post again. I'm talking about Marvel's slate not other studios making Marvel films. Thor will be the next Marvel Studios production unless something dramatically changes. Next after that will be: Cap, Ant-Man, or Nick Fury.
Marvel's supposed to have 2 in house studio pics per year but the strike f'd that up.
Edit: Also Marvel's financing agreement with Merrill prohibits a post Summer release so that's not happening without an amendment to the contract and that would go against all business sense. Only a Holiday release would probably be an acceptable change to the contract because Holdiay and Summer releases promote healthier merchandise activity. Some will try to argue with me but...In the past it has been proven consistently with few exceptions that even with lower box office totals in the Summer Marvel would make more money overall from the franchise with a Summer release. Which makes the financing deal less risky for Merill. That's why it's in the contract this way.

I wouldn't say that, they did sign an interim deal with the WGA, so things should be moving along again.

I wouldn't say that, they did sign an interim deal with the WGA, so things should be moving along again.
I knew that the second it was announced but the strike had an effect on rewriting Thor, and finishing up or starting the other 2009 projects. It absoloutely 100% had an impact on 2009 films for Marvel. Now perhaps they can figure out how to do it but there is no denying the impact:
http://biz.yahoo.com/e/080125/mvl8-k.html
The amendment provides that, because of the strike by the Writers Guild of America that began on November 5, 2007, our deadline for making an initial funding of a third film under the Facility is moved from June 29, 2008 to September 18, 2008. The amendment also provides that the deadline can be extended beyond September 18, 2008, but only if we increase our liquidity reserves under the Facility.
I do know what I'm talking about. :)
See the 3rd film is most likely Thor. Marvel can enter pre-production before initial funding but by it's own definition they're not gonna start filming the 3rd film until September at the earliest. So they would have at the most about 10 months from filming until the films release to make Summer 2009. Now perhaps they don't need all of that time and they're just being safe. They better draw money from that and be ready to start filming buy late July 2008 or we're looking at an amended contract for a Holiday 08 release or Thor won't be out until 2010 Summer.

I thought you meant in terms of release dates. My bad! :unishr:
Advanced Dark
01-30-2008, 07:31 PM
It will effect the release dates if they can't start filming in time because the scripts aren't ready. Marvel still has 2 films planned for 2009 but that's highly likely to be officially changed to just Thor for 2009.

Marvel Studios signed an agreement with the WGA. I think they can write scripts for any of the movies that are being produced by Marvel Studios now, including Thor, Avengers, and Captain America. I forget who is making Magneto.
Advanced Dark

Yes Marvel can keep making movies now that they signed the deal but it did cause a delay. Period. Magneto is part of the X-Men franchise so it's at Fox.

I'm not as excited to see Ant-Man as Thor, or Captain America. I'm skeptical about The Avengers, since that's a movie that would have to have a lot of effort to be good, and a lot of good casting choices with no inconsistencies. We don't want Avengers to be handled the same way Justice League is being handled.

the avengers will be awesome if they get the actual actors who played the characters in their individual films. which is exactly what marvel is doing, and it has potential to rock. with justice league, wb has decided not to do that, therefore it has potential to suck.

Since everyone else is talking about the avenger single films, I'm going to post my opinion on it all. I can't wait for an antman film, I think that would be really cool, and I really want to Caotain America to come out in 2009, but I would prefer it if it was set in WW2. Thor I'm not that excited about as his caracter has always seemed rather boring to me, allthough I'll still see it. ANd last but not least Nick Fury: This is what I want to happen with his caracter- he appears in IM and the other movies, and then he as a farily big role in Avengers. Then, after Avengers, I want to see a prequel film fr him. Anyone else agree?
