This guy Cable inherits a pretty good team; Oakland is gonna ba damn good in a few years, maybe even next year, Davis or no Davis.

The funny thing about this is, The Raiders O-Line is terrible, yet they hire the O-Line coach.

Eh, their pass protection has not been good but their run blocking has been pretty good...just look at the running room here:

Definitely the Rams. They're this years Miami Dolphins.

We'll see. The Pats can do a lot to help him.

Look at the basics of our offense. We have 3 very dynamic players who different things very well.

#1 Maroney at running back is the easiest of the 3 to get the ball, hes a fast, powerful guy with superb moves and vision. Morris is a decent goal line back if you wanna give a rest, and Faulk is a fantasic recieving back, but at some point you have to get Maroney more involved in the passing game; he is too good in open space to have out of the game. Faulk AND Maroney on 3rd downs (along with Moss, Welker, and Watson) would be extremely tough to stop, even with Cassel at the helm.

Welker is #2; screens or short passes to Welker have proved lethal because he is so damn quick and has surpising power and great ability to break tackles.

Moss is #3, and is the hardest to get the ball to, but is such a huge red zone and deep threat that defenses will always throw fits over him. What is so good/bad (depends how you look at) is IF the Patriots can get Maroney and the running game going early and often, Moss stock instantly goes up. Moss has always been a clever w/o who will go slow on some deep routes when he knows he isnt getting the ball. Play actions with Maroney followed by Cassel going deep for a running hard Moss will be virtually unstoppable unless horribly under throws the ball ala that deep pass against the Jets.

They go in that order. The Patriots offense from this point on has to make Maroney the biggest threat on the field; that will instantly help Cassel, and therefore Moss and Welker, because the defenses will always be playing the run.

Me too, I dont know when McDaniels will consistantly give him the ball. When he did at the end of last season, Maroney was lights out.

However, 7 of the 1st 10 carries and 7 of the first 16 plays against the Jets went to Maroney, I think McDaniels knows whats good.

Maroney a lot better and more dynamic than all 3 of those guys, the only one should be in over him is Faulk on 3rd downs. Morris and Jordan should come into give him a breather of take goaline carries.

I am sold on Maroney and think he can handle the load as you know, but facts are facts. Maroney is far more equipped to get the ball downfield then any of those 3.

Maroney himself with Faulk on 3rd downs and the occasional spell/rest will be more effective then the 3 of them splitting, the drop from Maroney to Morris or Jordan is too big, any coach will tell you that yet some of our fans like Maroney is a Cedric Benson and Morris/Jordan are a Jerious Norwood. As soon as defenses key in on Morris ro Jordan the way they do when Maroneys usually in, they shut down as we saw last weekend.

We beat the Jets because of Mangini's bad Redzone play calling. We could have easly lost oi He let Favre throw to the Endzone instead of pounding the rock.

FaT_tONle
09-30-2008, 09:36 PM
I think Mangini is just feeling for that comfort level with this team... he will play it conservative because his defense still needs time to gel... that unit will get better... and when crunch time comes Mangini will lean more and more on Farve's arm. The Cardinal game was a fluke but expect more agressive play calling from the Jets. Pats will definitely finish in third place IMO.

This is why the NFL is so crazy: The Cardinals beat the Dolphins who beat the Patriots who beat the Jets who beat the Cardinals.
Or the Chiefs beat the Broncos who beat the Raiders who beat the Chiefs.
There are a ton of these circles.
It's hard to tell who's really that good any more.
Going into last week, the Broncos looked like a Super Bowl contender and the Chiefs looked like a contender for the 1st pick in the draft. So of course the Chiefs beat the Broncos.
Going into last week, people said Favre should have stayed retired and Warner was back to his Rams days. So, of course Favre throws 6 TDs and Warner has 6 turnovers.
It's a hard league to figure out and people want to make snap decisions. People treat one week like it means everything and it clearlier doesn't. And kudos to Whisenhunt for standing behind Warner. After three good to great games, it would be stupid to pull the plug. No one on that team played well. And would anyone bet that they won't beat the heck out of the undefeated Bills in Arizona Sunday? Not in this NFL.
This weekend, I only see one game that looks like a lock (Dallas at home over Cincinnati). But I wouldn't bet the house on it.

We, well, maybe not you in particular but the regulars in the 2007 football thread; had the same convos over Maroney last season. I can recall showtime (sorry, but you did bro) and many others saying Maroney would "never" be a feature back, couldnt handle the load, and was probably one his way out; there was even talk of drafting McFadden.

But, at the end of the year, he proved everything I had been saying right: When he gets the ball the same amount as every other great running back, he will produce like every other great running back.

My story has not changed, and I have stats on my side. I am just waiting for him to get the ball 20 times a game again.

With Ryan Fitzpatrick at qb , the value of every wr/runningback drops

Bengals signed free agent RB Cedric Benson.

You couldn't script it any better. A Bengals franchise that has taken flack the past several years for ignoring character when making personnel decisions has put potential over professionalism once again. Benson, signed to add depth with DeDe Dorsey suffering a hamstring injury and Kenny Watson likely to miss Week 5, will back up Chris Perry. Even with Perry's obvious struggles, we wouldn't rush to the waiver wire to pick up Benson.

I caught the entire Al Davis/Kiffin recap on espn. Some good drama here. Better than any reality show. You know someone is clearly lying about what really happend. Al Davis just let loose and was ruthless about how Kiffin would argue with everyone and blew everyone off and wanted to do what he wanted. While Kiffin was on ESPN lookin sympathetic and if he was about to cry saying the first thing he asked al davis is if any of the other coaching staff had been fired and that he was glad that they didnt and happy for them and their families. Good Stuff.

Here is the text of a letter provided by the Oakland Raiders that owner Al Davis said he gave to Lane Kiffin on Sept. 12, telling him that if he violated terms of his contract he would be fired for cause:

September 12, 2008

By Hand Delivery and Federal Express

Dear Lane:

Over the past months, you have made a number of public statements that were highly critical of, and designed to embarrass and discredit, this organization, its players and its coaches. I left you alone during training camp in hopes that you would cease your immature and destructive campaign.

However, you continue to make public statements that are critical of the organization, its players as whole as well as individual players. Such statements constitute conduct detrimental to the Raiders and I will no longer stand silently by while you continue to hurt this organization.

Further, your contract is quite clear that you work ``subject to the direction and supervision of the General Partner'' and that the General Partner has ``the exclusive right to do all things, which in its sole discretion are necessary to maintain and improve the Club, the football organization and their activities.''

I realized when I hired you that you were young and inexperienced and that there would be a learning process for you. Your mistakes on player personnel and coaches were overlooked based on our patience with you. But I never dreamt that you would be untruthful in statements to the press as well as on so many other issues. Your actions are those of a coach looking to makes (sic) excuses for not winning, rather than a coach focused on winning.

For example, with the exception of Gibril Wilson, you were involved in recruiting all free agents and determining salaries for them and you were explicit about your desire to sign Javon Walker and DeAngelo Hall amongst others. All were a must to sign in your eyes, Hall, in particular, because he played for Greg Knapp in Atlanta and Knapp gave him high grades. Do not run from that now.

I do realize that you did not want us to draft JaMarcus Russell. He is a great player. Get over it and coach this team on the field, that is what you were hired to do. We can win with this team!

In regards to your recent fabrications about the defense, during the final cuts you made every cut on offense and every cut on defense except for (Fred) Wakefield on defense and (Seth) Wand on offense. Furthermore, during the game Monday night (defensive coordinator) Rob (Ryan) played your Cover-2 defense and we got killed on an approximately 50-yard touchdown pass and an approximately 70-yard gain that led to a field goal.

You meet every week with the defensive coaches to go over both the past game and to get a general feel for what will happen during the week in practice. You have the ability and authority to provide your input during those meetings and the preparation of the game plan. I do not have weekly meetings with Rob - you do.

During the week no one has ever told you what to do on either offense or defense. In addition, no one has ever told you during a game what to do on either offense or defense and you call every play on offense. During a game if you want to blitz more, all you have to do is let Rob know what blitz you want and he will do it.

Although you continue to use the media to express your dissatisfaction with others, no one has publicly pointed out to you that in four preseason games and one regular-season game played this year, your offense has scored one first-half touchdown. That put tremendous pressure on the defense.

I know that you wanted to bring your father in to run the defense and that Monte told me that he wanted to come here even though he as (sic) under contract to Tampa. However I did not want to tamper with another team. In any event that was over seven months ago. Do not now also run from the defense and your responsibilities.

This letter constitutes notice that if you further violate any term of your contract, in any manner whatsoever, you will be terminated for cause. I trust that this will not occur.

A.D. Football, Inc.

Why do they want to remake Harrington, he's the same age as Brees and Joey's not going to be pushing for the starting job....unless Sean Payton goes all "Al Davis" on the Saints....

Probably with the intention of moving him...who knows. Payton did find Romo so maybe he thought he saw something.

Of course no one is trading for Harrington. Just the thought is ridiculous. If anybody had even the slightest interest in signing him then they would have done so after being cut by the Falcons and then again by the Saints. They signed him to be a back-up. There's not much more to it.

The AFC has been pretty horrifc so far this season IMO..........argh why did Brady have to go down, we could have owned this confrence

Pats not commenting on Davis' tampering accusation
Oct. 1, 2008

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts -- New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is declining comment on a tampering accusation leveled against his team by Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.

Belichick was asked Wednesday about Davis' statement and said that the Patriots are concentrating on Sunday's game against the 49ers in San Francisco. New England wide receiver Randy Moss also declined comment Wednesday.

Davis said Tuesday that the Patriots tampered with Moss before they obtained him from Oakland in a trade during last year's NFL draft. Davis made the statement after a news conference in which he announced the firing of his coach, Lane Kiffin.

Travis Henry-RB- Broncos Aug. 31 - 3:31 pm et

NFL suspended free agent RB Travis Henry for "at least" one season for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

This wraps up his career. A one-time Pro Bowler, Henry finishes with a solid 4.1 YPC average. In his second season (with Buffalo), Henry ran for 1438 yards (4.4 YPC) and 13 TDs. After some injury plagued years, he looked rejuvenated with the Titans in 2006, but fell off a cliff in Denver last season.

Titans' Johnson, Ravens' Lewis chat

Titans rookie running back Chris Johnson has watched Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis for years. He spent most of this week watching him on tape.

So when his cell phone rang a few days ago and it was Lewis, he was taken aback. The two ended up talking as friends.

"It was a nice little conversation,'' Johnson said. "He seems like a really good guy. He told me he liked my game and he likes what I have been doing and he has been following me since college. He told me to continue to keep it up and if I ever needed to talk about anything I have his number. I thought it was pretty cool that he called.''

Johnson, the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month for September, said one of his little league coaches is a friend of Lewis, who has kids on his track team. When Lewis realized the connection he got Johnson's number.

Lewis, a nine-time Pro Bowl selection and the emotional leader of Baltimore's defense, will certainly be trying to deck Johnson on Sunday.

"I'm sure people fear him on the football field. I won't fear him,'' Johnson said. "You have to go in there with the same mentality and that's one of the things he said to me. He said he is just out there having fun and we talked about having fun on the field.''

The Falcons are 3-2.
The Dolphins are 2-2, beating the Patriots and the Chargers.
Buffalo and Tennessee are 5-0.
Chris Henry is on the active roster and playing for the Bengals.
Adam Jones hasn't been arrested again (as of yet).
There's still no Federal law prohibiting the Jets from wearing those god awful NY Titans throwbacks.
