If people are gonna say the Cowboys are done... then they have to say the same for the Eagles... I mean both teams pretty much have the same schedule here on out although Dallas still has to go to Pittsburg. AND the Eagles have yet to win a division game. Looks like they will be a last place team... as I predicted before the season started. Giants will probably be the one seed because the Panthers have not been as consistent as you would like. Arizona probably won't catch the Giants either. Wild Cards... I am really liking the Falcons. I think the Bucs will fall short here... and I think the Redskins will collapse. I still like the Cowboys... but they need the game next week. Good slate of games next sunday:
Balt @ NYG
Chic @ GB
Min @ TB
Den @ Atl
Dal @ Wash
Not to mention a good slate of AFC matchups as well.
I think both teams are gonna miss out of the playoffs personally.
Poor McFlabb.
He's had a pretty good year this year, but this team can't seem to execute when it counts.
There already talking like this might be Reid's last year. I personally wouldn't object as it's been ten years and it might be time for a change. At the same time though is there really anything all that great out there?

Nah... I doubt it. People forget... Cambell himself never took the Skins to the playoffs. He was injured both those years... I think Brunell was their main QB in 2005 and started that playoff game for them. And their backup QB took them there last year. Cambell hasn't proven it yet. And let's not forget the Eagles were 5-6 in 2006 before coming back to win the division at 10-6... probably a distant memory to Eagle fans. We are barely past the midway point.

So does anyone fancy the Falcs for the NFC south? I just think after the last two defensive displays (apart from the amount of yards Brees got) and Matt Ryan starting to really roll I think they are gonna be ready for anyone.

The Saints are pretty banged up, but I do think Atlanta is the better team. Tom Jackson actually made a good point(surprisingly). Atlanta wasn't necessarily a terrible team last year, just surrounded by trouble. With all those distractions gone, and a real leader at QB there winning games.

I think it's a slim chance that both Wild Card teams will be from the NFC East now. I'm thinking at least one.
I think the Bucs and the Falcons have a real shot, AND they have an easier schedule only have to win 4 of their next 7 games as opposed to the Cowboys and Eagles who must win 5 of their next 7 games.

Hurt....
The Raiders worked out JaMarcus Russell (knee tendinitis) prior to Sunday's game before listing him as inactive against Carolina.
"It really didn’t get any better," coach Tom Cable said. "He just couldn’t push off and couldn’t plant. Hopefully we can get over that this week." Russell will resume starting again if healthy after Andrew Walter's dreadful outing.

Again, his contract isn't up this year...He is signed through 2012. There is a club option this year at 9 mil, which The Eagles will pick up. They may trade him after that, but it won't be to a NFC team.

Barring injuries, he won't be coming to Chicago.
Think about it, why would Chicago want McNabb? He's past his best and has recurring injury problems, you don't want a man made out of glass behind the Bears offensive line, he wouldn't last a season.
I think the Bears are committed to Kyle Orton being their long term starter.

Look at Cowher, similar situation. Was very successful, got his team to the Superbowl, several Conference Championship games, won division titles. It took him like 14-15 years to win a Superbowl. Maybe Reid is a late bloomer:csad:
Reid's main problem is he has become predictable. People know what play is coming, but he's stubborn.

McNabb is the far superior "athlete," but Warner is much better at the intangibles. Every coach that has worked with Warner, as well as his fellow QBs on the team, has labled Warner as the smartest QB they have ever worked with.
Also:
Warner has some thinking about Joe Cool ... (http://www.sacbee.com/static/weblogs/49ers/archives/016843.html)
Trent Dilfer grew up in Aptos, so he knows that you simply can't throw around His name casually. And by Him, I don't mean the man upstairs. I mean Joe Montana. So it speaks to just how impressive Kurt Warner, the 49ers' Monday night opponent, has been this season when Dilfer the other day drew a comparison between No. 13 and No. 16. Said Dilfer: "As far as the rhythm passing game, he's the best since Joe Montana."
Indeed, words like "rhythm" and "comfortable" and "calmness" seem to pop up when people are describing Warner this season. After eight games, Warner has an unbelievable 69.9 completion rate, which is the best in the NFL and the best in his career. He's being mentioned as a potential MVP. And if the perennially woeful Cardinals go on to win the division, it will be hard to argue against him.

You may have a point with Cowher if Philadelphia wasn't such an unforgiving city. I think Pittsburgh is more patient and loyal than Philadelphia. While I agree that McNabb is the QB they probably have to stick with, I'm wondering how many more seasons need to go by before they get rid of Reid. Maybe Reid isn't the coach to get the job done there.

I think with Pittsburgh the loyalty lies with Rooney(owner). He seems to have great relationships with the coaches he has and rides it out with them. I don't know the numbers for sure but they've only had 3 coaches I can remember over the last 30 some odd years at least. He seems to always pick winners, but also gives them time to become great coaches.
Reid doesn't seem to be growing any longer as a coach. His playcalling has grown tiresome and predictable and his job with personel has been pretty bad. He really hasn't done a bad job of surrounding McNabb with playmakers. Outside of drafting Westbrook and DeSean Jackson he's had little in regards to a #1 one target(outside of T.O. obviously). I'd like to see give up play calling duties to Morningweig.

The only knock against Warner will be number of games played, but he has made the most of the games he has been in. For example, from the Mercury News:
If the movie title wasn't already taken, "300" would be a good name for the Kurt Warner story.
The Arizona Cardinals maestro has 45 career 300-yard passing games. That's impressive, considering he has played in only 101.
It means Warner posts a 300-yard game 44.6 percent of the time, by far the highest percentage among prolific passers.
Dan Marino (63 career 300-yard games) did it 26 percent of the time, Brett Favre (55) checks in at 20.8 percent, Dan Fouts (51) at 28.2 percent, Warren Moon (49) at 23.6 and Peyton Manning (44) at 26.2.
Warner, 37, is in the mix for a third MVP award, having won the honor in 1999 and 2001.
This season, he leads the NFL in completion percentage (69.9) and ranks second in passer rating (104.2) and third in passing yards (2,431) and touchdown passes (16).

Plus, keep in mind that personality plays a part in Hall of Fame voting, too. Aside from all of the prolific numbers he has, Warner is extremely well-respected by his fellow players, by coaches and by journalists. He does a lot of interviews and he is constantly doing community service. That kind of stuff can help someone considered "borderline."

That's too bad... o well. The Thursday night package ain't that good this year... a lot of good teams versus a lot of bad teams... this is a big game though... two seed in the AFC still very much up for grabs... Patriots or Jets could easily get a bye... but they have to win here. Too bad not many people will be able to see it.
As far as Warner... you could make the argument... if he wins another MVP... that he was as good as Farve without the longevity... that counts for something. Maybe even a first ballot... if Dan Fouts gets in then Warner will get in.

If he had been consistent, or even average outside of these years in St. Louis (which were admittedly amazing), I would think of him as a shoe-in for the HOF, however he got hurt in 2002 and spent a few years in limbo and ultimately I think that will cost him.
It all depends on how long he's with the Cardinals and if he can stay consistent and injury free, if he plays another 2-3 years at the same level I think he could get in.
And please, Dan Fouts is an entirely different situation; they passed the ball alot less then and yet he managed to put together the first two 4000 yards passing seasons back to back, also at the time he retired he was only the third QB with 40,000 passing yards.

I really like Singletary as a coach for some reason.
I also really like James Hightower.

2. it's TIM Hightower :hehe:
How was that an incompletion on that sideline play? The dude had control of the ball when his knee went down out of bounds. He should be technically "down" at that point.
I agree, he was in!

The ending was weird as hell. I'm confused on the final 10 seconds. When Gore ran the ball and missed the endzone, the offense then reset and spiked the ball for 4th down. After they did that, the referee's blew the whistle for the play to be reviewed. I thought you couldn't review a play after the next play has been snapped? After they reviewed the play, they said the clock will start on my signal. I thought that was a bit weird.
Mister J
11-10-2008, 11:31 PM
You're right on the interpretation of the review, NYS. What happened was that they ruled that the replay was called for before the spike. The last play of the game was SF's 3rd down.
The Riddler
11-10-2008, 11:41 PM
i'm a niner fan, have been and always will be.
what i can't understand is after taking a run at it with gore, why do you try and run on your last play of the game TWO AND A HALF yards out from the endzone against a goal line formation with michael robinson!? you have to take a shot through the air in that case or at least let gore take a shot at it (he almost scored previously). if it were a yard or so out, it'd make more sense, but running it from 2.5 yards is really pushing it.
also, they were absolutely retarded when running down the clock. yeah you are in position to score, but you don't run it down to TWENTY seconds. just poor execution.
i knew we were in for rough times when we didn't draft aaron rodgers back in 2005 but this sucks.

They spiked it with 20 seconds left... they should have spiked it with around 30-35 seconds left... why it takes someone that long to spike is beyond me... but even then... you have to run three plays there. If you run on 2nd down, get stopped, then spike it that's a waste of a down... and that's what they tried to do... but too much time had expired at that point. I just can't fathom how you don't pass on second down... even if you get sacked or the receiver catches it in bounds but falls short of the goal line... you could call another quick passing play into the endzone and have about two or three seconds left... on fourth down you can go run/pass... whichever. You can't waste a down there... if I were a 49er fan... I am happy my team is not in playoff contention because that is just an awful way to lose.

I wish I was on the sideline because it's clear that either Hill was confused or the coaches weren't sending the right signals. It seemed like he was running up to the line to call a play but let 15 seconds run off the clock before spiking it. Thats just inexperience right there. Call a play or spike it, at that point, you're the QB, you're the leader of the offense, you have to know the situation and make a decision, not wait for a coach to decide what the hell he wants to do.

Now that everyone has had their bye, Pro Football Weekly's Week 10 MVP Meter
1. Cardinals QB Kurt Warner — A near-perfect Monday-night performance vaults Warner, the league’s highest-rated QB, to the top.
2. Saints QB Drew Brees — Season-high three picks, loss in Atlanta knock him down a peg. He racked up 422 passing yards, but they had little impact on the outcome and only led to 20 points.
3. Redskins RB Clinton Portis — On bye.
4. Chargers QB Philip Rivers — Four of his eight interceptions have come in the last three games, so he needs to clean up the sloppiness. He still leads the league with 21 TD passes and his next one will tie a career high.
5. Vikings RB Adrian Peterson — He has carried the Vikings back into contention in the NFC North.
6. Dolphins OLB Joey Porter — Porter should let his play, rather than his mouth, do the talking — his league-high 12 sacks are louder than any words.
7. Falcons DE John Abraham — Made his NFC-best 11th sack and helped Drew Brees uncharacteristically unravel in Falcons’ 34-20 win.
8. Titans DT Albert Haynesworth — I know how great he is, but numbers do matter, and right now, Haynesworth doesn’t have them. He no longer leads DTs in tackles or sacks.
9. Steelers OLB James Harrison — He sacked Peyton Manning, giving him 11 on the season — only Joey Porter has more — and also had two other tackles for loss.
10. Broncos QB Jay Cutler — In addition to three TDs, Cutler threw for more yards in the fourth quarter (204) vs. the Browns than 13 other starters in the league had through an entire game in Week 10.
Double Down
11-11-2008, 10:41 AM
Seriously, why is Brees even in the discussion? Three quarterbacks have more TDs, only five QBs have thrown more interceptions, and he is on a losing team that is in last place in its division. He has a lot of passing yards, but a fair amount of those are empty yards at the ends of games the Saints are losing. The Saints would still be in last place without him, meaning he is not all that "valuable," and his numbers don't blow away the competition. Cutler's numbers are comparable to Brees' and the Broncos are in first, Cutler should be ahead of Brees, for one.
But I think it is pretty clear that the award is Warner's to lose. The Cardinals are not 6-3 because of their running game, special teams or defense (as the nation saw last night).

There are a number of teams that are better right now... Tampa is better... Redskins are better. Philli and Dallas when healthy are dangerous. Hell even Atlanta is playing better than the Cardinals. Whoever they play in that wild card round will beat them IMO. It will be a tight game but I think the Cardinals will lose regardless. Now maybe they get lucky and win one playoff game... but going into Carolina and especially New York... a team with no experience has a .01% chance of winning that game. I'm clearly biased, but I think Matt Forte's the better of the two backs, he's far more complete.
I'm not overlooking Forte, it's him or Ryan for me. Hasn't Forte got 1000 yards rushing and receiving already? Combined I mean.
He's on 995 total yards, at the moment.

There are an awful lot of candidates, including Smith in Atlanta, Fisher in Tennessee, Sparano in Miami, Zorn in Washington, Whisenhunt in Arizona, Coughlin in New York, and Harbaugh in Baltimore -- although I think it will come down to one of the first four.

Much to the Patriots’ chagrin, the reports are accurate. Pro Bowl linebacker Adalius Thomas will have season-ending surgery tomorrow for his broken forearm, a league source confirmed Tuesday.
Thomas’ surgery is the latest blow to a team that already has lost quarterback Tom Brady, running back Laurence Maroney and safety Rodney Harrison to season-ending injuries.
But the Patriots have overcome those other losses; no one will be surprised if they do it again.

With Denver's backfield wrecked by injuries, Tatum Bell is scheduled to workout Tuesday for the Broncos.
Peyton Hillis fever subsiding? Bell was a second-round pick by the Broncos in 2004 and had a 1,000-yard season for them in 2006 before being dealt to the Lions for Dre Bly. He was cut loose in September and made headlines for allegedly stealing Rudi Johnson's luggage, but the Broncos are pretty desperate and Bell could jump right into the mix for carries.

Well according to the SF Chronicle this morning, Martz was telling Hill (through his headset) to spike the ball...but for whatever reason, Martz also wanted to sub out certain linemen to change the formation.
Hill didn't know what was going on, as did some of the players...some didn't know whether or not to get on or off the field.
Shaun basically had to wait and see what Martz was trying to do because if they wearn't in the proper formation during the spike they would've gotten penalized.
I'm sure Hill would've made his own call BUT...when you got certain players trying to get off the field and others getting on, what are you gonna do?
Again, this all goes back to a series of miscommunications...starting with our offensive coordinator, Mike Martz.

Martz has always had clock management issues. I can't tell you how many times I would see his teams burn through timeouts to avoid delay of game penalties. When it first started happening, when Warner was QB of the Rams and Martz was the OC then HC, people weren't sure whose fault it was. Then, it happened with Bulger, too. Then, Kitna had the same thing happen. Etc.
Martz's plays are so long and precise that it takes a while to relay them. If there is uncertainty, then it seems as if there isn't enough time to get set. If you watch a Martz offense in action, it thrives best in a no-huddle situation, when the plays are condensed.
But there is no excuse for the end of the game last night. That was just wasteful.

The Cardinals aren't as bad on the road as people have made them out to be. They are 2-3 on the road. Of those losses, they lost to Washington by 7 and to Carolina by 4. Both good teams, both close losses.
Their 2-3 road record is the same record as Dallas, Green Bay, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and Buffalo.
Really, it's just that one bad half against the Jets that has given them the reputation as a "bad road team" this year. In fact, they have only been out-scored by a total of 1 point on the road this year.

1 (1) Titans 9-0-0 Has a team ever set franchise records for most rushing yards in a game and fewest in a game within four games? The Titans nearly did. They had to throw to beat the Bears and they did, to great effect. (PK)
2 (2) Giants 8-1-0 This is a Super Bowl team. No way anyone in East catches the Giants. (MM)
3 (4) Panthers 7-2-0 Survived a challenge from the mighty Raiders. Next up: Detroit. Panthers have to load up on wins before schedule turns tough. (PY)
4 (3) Steelers 6-3-0 "Big Ben" is struggling, and so are the Steelers. Suddenly Pittsburgh has dropped two of three. (JW)
5 (5) Redskins 6-3-0 They need Clinton Portis to play Sunday. He'll answer the bell. (MM)
6 (7) Buccaneers 6-3-0 Bucs should be pretty healthy coming off the bye, and they might have Cadillac Williams back. But Adrian Peterson will be most talked-about runner in Tampa this week. (PY)
7 (12) Patriots 6-3-0 The Patriots keep marching forward. Matt Cassel has established himself as more than a proxy for Tom Brady. He's a legit NFL starter. (TG)
8 (10) Falcons 6-3-0 Still think they're a fluke? The Falcons seem to get better every single week. (PY)
9 (11) Jets 6-3-0 The Jets' defense is among the NFL's elite. The Jets stop the run, sack the quarterback and create huge turnovers. (TG)
10 (15) Colts 5-4-0 The Colts impressed with back-to-back wins over New England and Pittsburgh, results that could be monumental when wild cards are sorted out. (PK)
11 (8) Cardinals 6-3-0 Sloppy play wasn't enough to cost the Cardinals against the 49ers, but Arizona must improve. (MS)
12 (13) Ravens 6-3-0 Is this an offense-first team or a defense-first team? The Ravens are averaging 33.5 points the past four games. (JW)
13 (6) Eagles 5-4-0 Now 0-3 in the division. And that game against the Giants wasn't as close as the score indicated. (MM)
14 (9) Bears 5-4-0 Even Rex Grossman would fare well against the Bears' pass defense. (KS)
15 (17) Dolphins 5-4-0 The Dolphins escaped with a 21-19 victory over the Seahawks in their first of three straight home games. Dolphins have won three in a row for first time since 2006. (TG)
16 (19) Cowboys 5-4-0 The bye week couldn't have come at a better time. Tony Romo should give them a big lift. (MM)
17 (14) Bills 5-4-0 They've lost three straight divisional games and four of their past five overall. An advantage they have is one more "home" game than every other AFC East team -- except they're playing one in Toronto. (TG)
18 (20) Vikings 5-4-0 Minnesota faces a tough task this week in Tampa Bay, where the Vikings haven't won since 1997. (KS)
19 (22) Broncos 5-4-0 The Broncos are battered on defense and they have no running game. But they do have Jay Cutler. Will it be enough? (BW)
20 (21) Chargers 4-5-0 The Chargers were lucky to beat the Chiefs on Sunday. They'll need more than luck to beat Pittsburgh this Sunday. (BW)
21 (16) Packers 4-5-0 Something is missing this season in Green Bay. (KS)
22 (23) Jaguars 4-5-0 The Jags go from facing winless Detroit to undefeated Tennessee in the span of a week. With the likelihood of a playoff berth fading, the Jags handing the Titans their first loss could be a season-maker. (PK)
23 (18) Saints 4-5-0 Injuries keep piling up and it seems like the Saints are on the brink of having their season fall apart. But they do have a trip to Kansas City. (PY)
24 (24) Browns 3-6-0 Despite its season going down the drain, Cleveland has some solace: Brady Quinn shows great promise. (JW)
25 (25) Texans 3-6-0 The Texans just haven't figured out how to hold onto the ball. Odds are their best chance to beat the Colts came in the first matchup, when they folded late and gave the game away. (PK)
26 (28) 49ers 2-7-0 Offensive adjustments seemed to make the 49ers more competitive, a positive step despite MNF defeat. (MS)
27 (27) Seahawks 2-7-0 Seahawks must emphasize running game even after Matt Hasselbeck returns. (MS)
28 (26) Rams 2-7-0 Last two games offset any progress the Rams made in their first two games under Jim Haslett. (MS)
29 (31) Chiefs 1-8-0 One of these days the Chiefs are going to win another game. Really. We think. (BW)
30 (29) Bengals 1-8-0 The bye gave Cincinnati two weeks to celebrate its first victory. But how long will it take to get win No. 2? (JW)
31 (30) Raiders 2-7-0 It's been three weeks since Oakland last scored a touchdown. It's also been three weeks since Oakland won a game. (BW)
32 (32) Lions 0-9-0 Who will the Lions call out of retirement this week? Eric Hipple? (KS)

And even more amazing is they haven't blown a next game after winning a big one. Yeah, they lost to Carolina and Tampa, but they were still learning at the time.
Beating Green Bay at home, and knocking off the Bears the week after..very cool. In the past seasons we probably would have lost both of them, and lost to the Saints after a win over pitiful Oakland.

This year, he signs with Tampa on a league minimum contract, and now he's leading the team in receiving and is on pace to finish with 80 receptions and over 1,000 yards.
That's the very definition of a comeback season.

Pennington already won it. I doubt he'd win again. Miami has been winning mostly for other reasons. Maybe Ricky Williams....

Pennington lost his starting job last year, and was cut in the off season. Signed with a one win team and has them contending for the WC. He's also in the top ten in Yards, and Completion %. That's a nice turn around.

I agree with Tonie.
....*shudders*
Pennington has brought stability, yes, but Miami is primarily winning because of the Wildcat and because of an improved defense.
On the other hand, with Bryant, we're talking about a guy who had showed promise, but essentially threw his career away with alcohol. He comes back this year, and is having an awesomely productive season for a contending team. The guy was out of football for over a year.

Pennington has always put up numbers like he has this year... people who don't realize this have not watched him play. This is not unusual for him... he had a bad year last year cause the o-line was terrible and he was pressing because he was on the verge of being replaced... sort of like Derek Anderson this year.

I've always liked Pennington and it's nice to see him succeed again...I do wonder how many good seasons he has left in him though

I've watched Pennington countless times over the years. The Jets are on every Sunday here. He had success, but last year was an absolute disaster. Now he's succeeding again. That's what I think they look at, that and players that rebound from injuries (Greg Ellis, Drew Brees). I think a guy like Jonathan Vilma is up there as well, probably ahead of Bryant. I think Bryant will get consideration, but I just don't think he's been more impressive then either Pennington or Vilma.
Also Garrison Hearst won the award twice.

Peterson has willed his team into the playoffs on his damn back, and Clinton Portis pockets straight has just been playing outside his dayum mind!

I agree. I also like Pennington, but aside from injuries and a lack of arm strength, his inconsistency is also a problem. Pennington's strengths are his leadership, game management, and accuracy. But after being with Jets for so many years, I think it was time for Jets to let him go. I'm glad that he has found success with Dolphins, though.

The News
49ers running back Frank Gore suffered a concussion last week, and he is still feeling the effects of it, according to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat.
Our View
Gore did not practice Wednesday and he will not practice Thursday, and his availability for Sunday's game against the Rams is suddenly in question. DeShaun Foster is Gore's backup and would likely get the bulk of the carries in his absence.

Inconsistent??? Um... if you are talking about health I'll give that to you... but this guy always put up good ratings/completion %'s when he was in there... healthy... 2003 he was banged up... Jets had a bad team that year... 2005 he torn the shoulder... 2007 the team was God awful... no Pete Kendall... they could not run the football... I mean he didn't have a good year... but the team was just bad... went beyond the QB.
Jets HAVE to win this ball game on Thursday... no other way around it. Knock Cassel out of the game and end the Pats season right now. They will not contend for a Superbowl if they don't lock up that two seed. Steelers will not pull away because of their schedule. And the AFC West stinks. Jets could EASILY clinch that bye along with the division. ANd they still play the Titans so you never know... maybe even a one seed. Farve won't win too many playoff games on the road.
Jets as of right now have a better QB, HB, O-line, better overall offense.
Jets as of right now have a better LB, and secondary, probably better overall Defense.
Jets head coach is Eric Mangini
Pats head coach is Bill Belichick
Pats win by 4 points.
