Aside from the Farve, I'm not too familiar with the Packers, how is Rodgers?
Im pretty sad about Favre
but Rodgers (IMO) is pretty good...When he took over against the Cowboys i believe...(cant remember if it was them or not)..he got about 200 yards and i think a touchdown or 2...cant remember...but he seems promising

Haul ass, Brett. Wish you retired before last year.

I've enjoyed watching one of the all-time greats play, but I'm sick of the bastard and his annual "Will I, Won't I" flip-flopping.

Favre's earned his retirement (and then some). He's pretty well spoken and personable, so I wouldn't be surprised to see him pick up a tv analyst job on one of the networks. Hell, if they'll let Thannon Tharpe do it, they'll let anyone do it!

And for all you people saying he is coming back, don't count on it. There is no coming back at 40 + years old to football. It's finally over. A few years too late and should have lost everyone's respect because of that ******** going away tour that ended up for nothing, but over nonetheless. Packers didn't wnat him back?????

Brett Favre-QB-Packers Mar. 4 - 11:14 am et

The Packers have officially announced Brett Favre's retirement. Brett Favre's agent Bus Cook said he thought Favre wanted to play another year, but didn't feel that the Packers wanted him back.

It sounds like this story isn't over yet. "I think he felt he could play one more year. I don't know if they told him they really wanted him to play. That's just the feeling I got," Cook said. Cook says that the Packers didn't try to talk Favre out of the decision. When asked if Favre could be talked out of the decision, he said, "I don't know."

Not a Jets fan but Pennington has never really impressed me. He's a NCAA QB at best with a "decent arm" but seems to be held together by duct tape and gum. I hope Clemens is better.

Yeah, despite the optimism I have regarding Jets' FA signings, I'm still not happy about their QB position. I'm hoping they'd sign a veteran QB as the 3rd option, or draft Ryan if he falls to #6 (but probably won't be). But if Run DMC drops to #6, then Jets can turn into a run-first team, which won't be a bad thing I guess.

Favre's agent seemed to suggest that he thinks he still has a year or two in him, but he feels that Packers won't want him back; in other words, he just wants to get some love. I think Favre just wants a team to shower him with adoration and promises before he un-retires and come back for another year...

Pennington is only efficient when he throws for short yardage, he doesn't have a arm especially after all the surgery. I mean if they become a run team, better for Pennington. Although, Pennington would be a better fit with like the Vikings and their offense.

Favre 'mentally tired,' tells Packers he's retiring
Updated: March 4, 2008, 11:06 AM ET

Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire.

"I know I can still play, but it's like I told my wife, I'm just tired mentally. I'm just tired," Favre told ESPN's Chris Mortensen in a voice mail messasge.

"If I felt like coming back -- and Deanna [Favre, his wife] and I talked about this -- the only way for me to be successful would be to win a Super Bowl. To go to the Super Bowl and lose, would almost be worse than anything else. Anything less than a Super Bowl win would be unsuccessful," Favre said in the message.

"I know it shouldn't feel unsuccessful, but the only way to come back and make that be the right decision would be to come back and win a Super Bowl and honestly the odds of that, they're tough. Those are big shoes for me to fill, and I guess it was a challenge I wasn't up for. "

Mortensen reported that according to Favre's agent, Bus Cook, Favre informed Packers coach Mike McCarthy of his decision Monday night.

The Gunslinger Retires

Brett Favre leaves the NFL with his name atop several career passing categories. In 2007, he set the record for passing TDs (442), passing yards (61,655) and wins by a starting QB (160) and interceptions (288). Including the playoffs, he played in 275 consecutive games.

A sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer, Favre, acquired in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons, led the Packers back to the NFL's elite. He retires with 5,377 carrer completions in 8,758 attempts for 61,655 yards, 442 touchdowns and 288 interceptions, passing Dan Marino's touchdown mark last season.

As a player Favre was known for his durability, his willingness to take risks and turn broken plays into big gains, as well as for the way his love for the game was evident in the way he played. He went to a pair of Super Bowls in 1996 and 1997, winning it all on his first try in Super Bowl XXXI, and was named to nine Pro Bowls.

Cook said as of Tuesday morning, there were no plans for Favre to hold a news conference. The Packers planned a news conference for 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

"I talked to Brett this morning and I told him 'nobody forced you to make this decision to retire, but the flip side is nobody encouraged you to play,'" Cook told Mortensen. "Two years ago, Ted [Thompson, the Packers' GM] encouraged him to play, but there was nothing this time around from them offering encouragement or him to come back."

Favre, who returned for the 2007 season when many thought he should have left the game, had a career renaissance in his final season and led the Packers to the NFC Championship Game, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants in overtime.

Favre passed Marino for the all-time completions record in 2006, and in 2007 set NFL records for wins by a QB, touchdown passes, pass attempts, pass yards and interceptions in 2007. He claimed the NFL record for career quarterback wins with his 149th victory in Week 2, passed Marino for the TD record in Week 4 and overtook Marino's career passing yards record in Week 15.

Mortensen reported that Favre, who wanted the Packers to obtain Randy Moss when he was a free agent last season, had once again pushed for Moss to join the Packers.

Favre had spoken to Moss late last week and was willing to commit to more than just this season if Moss and the Packers could come to an agreement. But the Packers did not pursue Moss, who re-signed with the Patriots on Monday.

In his voice mail message to Mortensen on Tuesday, Favre said the Packers' lack of pursuit of Moss was not the driving reason why he retired.

"This is not about the Packers and who they got or who they didn't get. I get along fine with [Thompson] and I get along great with [McCarthy]. Do I agree with them all the time? No. But the bottom line is, none of that stuff affected my decision," Favre said.

Surrounded by an underrated group of wide receivers who proved hard to tackle after the catch, Favre had a career-high completion percentage of 66.5 in 2007. He threw for 4,155 yards, 28 touchdowns and only 15 interceptions.

It was a remarkable turnaround from 2005, Favre's final season under former head coach Mike Sherman, when he threw a career-worst 29 interceptions as the Packers went 4-12.

Given Favre's career resurgence, it was widely assumed that he was leaning toward returning for the 2008 season.

He even said as much just before the Packers' Jan. 12 divisional playoff game against Seattle, telling his hometown newspaper that he wasn't approaching the game as if it would be his last and was more optimistic than in years past about returning.

"For the first time in three years, I haven't thought this could be my last game," Favre told the Biloxi [Miss.] Sun Herald. "I would like to continue longer."

ESPN Reports: Coming from a very reliable source within the Eagles' organization, within the next 24 to 48 hours Lito Sheppard will be shipped to the St. Louis Rams along with the 19th Pick in the 2008 draft for Rams' wideout Torry Holt. The 31-year old Holt, going into his 10th NFL season, had a very impressive 2007 season. He finished with 93 receptions for 1,189 yards and 7 touchdowns. This addition will vastly improve a struggling Eagles' wide receiving corps

Holt probably has 1-3 years left , so the Eagles are really going for broke this year. I won't complain, but I thought they could do better. The Eagles will have 10+ picks this year, so they still have flexibility if they want to moveup in the draft. They need a CB, Safety, and OTs pretty bad. From his contract details on rotoworld, I think the Rams would take a $3.29m cap hit if they got rid of Holt, which is not bad of a hit. If the Rams are gonna go into full rebuilding mode, this looks like a perfect deal for them.

That's not a bad deal... but Holt is pretty old... I think the 19 pick is too much.... would have thought it would be a 2nd rounder and a later round pick... as for Farve... I'll miss the guy... he made the right decision though. Holt still has a good four years left...

And on a side note... as dreadful as this free agent class has been other than the two guys on the Pats... the NFL free agency has gone pretty well... usually there is no hype what so ever for free agents the only thing in the offseason to look forward to was pretty much the draft... the NFL has hit it out of the ball park compared to what it normally does this time of year... I like the fact that teams are starting to wheel and deal more and create more trade opportunities... its right up there with the other sports with respect to offseasons...

Couple of things Favre can do during retirment:

- Surgically remove Madden's lips from his ***
- Continue the rich tradition of former Packer players going on to coach the team: Forrest Gregg, Bart Star
- Take over for Terry Bradshaw as TVs top hillbilly footbal analyst.
- Count the days until Peyton Manning has all of his passing records.
- Two words: Vicotin Binge!

I'm a bit sad to see Brett go as it shows the end of an era in Green Bay, but I've been anticipating this for a while, I thought for sure he was going to retire last year and didn't keep the thought too far out of my mind. I was a bit surprised he chose to hung it up after this past year, expecially considering that most of that team is returning and will only get better with a year of experience under their belts, but i respect his decison.

I'm 17 and the only person who i have seen behind center my whole life for the Packers is Brett Favre, but I think that Aaron Rodgers is ready, while one game surely dosen't make a career, I think that his preformance in the Dallas game shows that he is able to step up and lead this team as the starting quarterback into the playoffs with the strong defence and skill players that this team has.

I think the owner and GM of Packers' refusal to offer a massive contract to lure Moss just to satisfy Favre showed that while they respect him, they are unwilling to mortgage their future just to please him. It's a sign that says they are more than willing to do what they think it's best, not what Favre thinks it's best for the organization. It surprised me that Favre was harping about the offense at all. GB was pretty dynamic on that side of the ball last year (#2 total yards, #4 scoring). Guys like Lee, Jennings and Grant really stepped up. Sure, you can always get better and if Moss is available, why not make a play, but they hardly needed a great redress there.

T.J. Duckett-RB-Seahawks Mar. 4 - 5:52 pm et

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports that the Seahawks and T.J. Duckett have agreed to terms on a five-year contract.

We'd love to see the numbers on the deal first, but this could be a sign that Seattle is greasing the skids for Shaun Alexander. At the very least, Duckett is likely to steal some touchdowns. Duckett and Maurice Morris could also combine with a rookie to carry the load if Seattle chooses to cut Alexander in the offseason.

The Boston Globe reports that the Patriots agreed to terms with CB Jason Webster.

Webster provides a veteran body to compete at cornerback, but he's managed to stay healthy for fewer than half his games in the past five years. He should struggle to be anything more than a fourth or fifth corner as the Patriots rebuild the position.

Walker would replace Jerry Porter in Oakland, but signing with the Raiders won't do much to rekindle his fantasy value.

Romo will be the most pressured Quarterback to win a Superbowl for the remainder of his career... Rodgers will probably fall into 2nd place... should be a great rivalry between the two as long as they are healthy the next six years... Rivers probably third... yes he did get traded down in the draft... but he talks too much smack and now he's the only QB in that class without a ring... he better win one with that team eventually... although the history isn't quite there with the Chargers... league is slowly coming back to the QB driven league as we are starting to see the depth build back up in the position... the QB play has been pretty bad recently only because everyone but Farve basically retired by 2000... now guys are starting to hit their prime...

Why the **** to the Pack need a big play threat when they got the kid Jennings... signing the big free agents is never a good idea unless your team is on the back end and is only built for the next 1-2 years... the Packers are the youngest team in the NFL... no need to bring in a big time free agent like that... you could easily spiral back to 7-9 if the chemistry isn't quite right. If you are a team like the Pats with a defense that is almost ready for total rebuilding mode... then you bring in a free agent like that.

For one, I'm not trying to be a G.M.

For two, Randy has proven he won't demand a HUGE salary if he can get on a proven team with proven players. The Pack did more than enough to prove that, with Moss in their WR corp, they could make it to the Super Bowl.

Moss' deal with the Pats... 27 million... 12 million bonus... do the math... thats 13 million per... to get him out of New England you'd have had to push that to 30 15... 15 million per... and you can't really cut him at any point in the three years because the cap hit would be too great... if you are the Pack there is no reason to put your money in that guy when you got an aging secondary and a suspect O-line... they are going to have to address those needs either next year or the year after unless they hit it out of the ball park in this years draft.

Yeah, he gets this three-year deal now after he had that year with the Pats already, at a lower salary. Regardless, I'm sure any G.M. would shell out decent money to Moss if it meant bringing your team to the Super Bowl. After Moss's performance this past season? Yeah, I think Green Bay would dish out that kind of cash for him.

Maybe if they knew Farve was coming back for sure... but if Moss' decision affected Farve's decision then the Pack shouldn't have been adhering to Farve's demands... the guy has basically run the team since Holmgren left and Sherman lost that playoff game to the Falcons... if I'm the Pack I am not signing Moss just to keep my franchise QB happy when the guy is has like one year left tops...

Raiders bring in Javon Walker with megadeal

Raiders agreed to terms with Javon Walker on a six-year, $55 million contract, with $16 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Adam Schefter. He'll make $27 million in the first three years.

Al Davis has lost his mind. Even Walker's old coach Mike Shanahan said the receiver eventually needed microfracture surgery on his chronically sore knee. No one else was bidding for Walker, and many teams publicly denounced any interest. Walker gained 57 yards on seven catches in his last five games last year, and barely seemed able to run. Perhaps he'll recover, but Walker isn't worth Randy Moss money even when healthy. Like Moss' deal with Oakland, this one could end ugly. Mar. 4 - 10:34 pm et

The trade up with Miami is all hogwash... even if McFadden falls the price will still be the same almost... they could make cap room though its possible... obviously they'd cut Anothony Henry, Terry Glenn, they'd probably have to trade Greg Ellis for a 2nd day pick to clear cap room since they have a 2nd year player that can fill in... I an guessing thats 10 million off the cap at least... give up a 1st and a 3rd for Hall... and then you are free to take the wideout and RB with your remaining 1st day picks... I think its feasible but unlikely since Hall would demand too much money.

Browns agreed to terms with Shaun Rogers to a six-year, $42 million contract. $20 million is guaranteed and he'll make $23 million in the first three years.

Replacing Tommy Kelly as the highest paid defensive tackle in the league. Acquiring Rogers in a trade was a gamble, and this ups the ante. Rogers may fit better in Cleveland's 3-4 defense than in Detroit, but he struggled with weight and motivation right after his last big contract. There's no doubt Cleveland's line is vastly improved though.

I don't think Baltimore could fit him under the cap.

From what I've been hearing, the Cardinals are trying to get Fitzgerald to restructure his contract so they can sign more free agents, but the talks are leading no where. So I'm guessing if they can't get a contract figured out, they're going to trade him.

But, they're two reasons why this might not be true. One, the Cardinals have said they aren't going to trade Fitzgerald. Two, Terrel Suggs has said that he will be named the Ravens franchise player.

Dark Donnie
03-05-2008, 08:55 PM
Suggs was named the Franchise Player I believe.

Fitz's contract from what I read, even restructured must include that $31 mil guaranteed, he'll want other guaranteed money on top of that.

If anyone gets him I still think it will be The Eagles.

Saw this on another board:
Despite negotiations for a new contract that would add badly needed salary-cap relief dragging on with no end in sight, team insiders tell us star WR Larry Fitzgerald continues to wholeheartedly pledge his allegiance to the Cardinals. But the way we hear it, if there isn’t any substantial progress toward a new deal in the next week or so, the Cardinals might have no choice but to consider trading Fitzgerald, whose name has been linked recently with at least one team — Philadelphia — in a possible deal that would reportedly send Eagles CB Lito Sheppard and a second-round pick to the desert. “But there’s no way the Cardinals will go for that deal,” one team insider told PFW. “I would think they would demand a considerable haul in draft choices (rather than) just Lito Sheppard and a No. 2. If Fitzgerald is going anywhere, the Cardinals will ask for the moon.” We hear the biggest hang-up in contract talks at present with Fitzgerald’s agent, Eugene Parker, is the amount of guaranteed money his client would receive. Not helping matters for the Cardinals are the hefty contracts that have been doled out to receivers early in this year’s free-agent market. Not only has Parker taken particular note of the latest WR parameters. Team insiders believe Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin and his agent are just as interested in those numbers, with Boldin expected to deservedly push hard for a new deal in line with whatever Fitzgerald ends up receiving.

Bill Cower to coach the Lions? I mean Nittany Lions in Penn State.

Penn State Courting Cowher...Former Steelers Coach Bill Cowher reportedly paid a visit to the Penn State campus last month and was an overnight guest of PSU Athletic Director Tim Curly....this lead to speculation that Cowher is being considered for the Nittany Lions head coaching job since Joe Paterno has only one year left on his contract...Laschout.com was the first to report this news including the possibility that Cowher has already put his house in North Carolina up for sale...if you look closely at the pictures included in the listing of the house, you can see a replice of the Lombardi trophy on a mantle and a Steelers helmet in another picture.

Rumors...Rumors that are floating around the league... Falcons owner Arthur Blank is said to covet Boston College QB Matt Ryan...the Dolphins will pass on Matt Ryan with the first pick in the Draft...Dolphins V.P. Bill Parcells is said to be interested in taking fellow New Jersey native Joe Flacco with one of the teams picks in the Draft...the Broncos are considering making a move up in the Draft to select either USC DT Sedric Ellis or LSU DT Glenn Dorsey...

Bills QB J.P. Losman's name has been linked in trades to Minnesota, Detroit, Atlanta and Green Bay.

"ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END”
Posted by Mike Florio on March 6, 2008, 1:44 p.m.
In one of those rare moments during which a palpable sense of unfolding history flows through every tick of the clock, Packers quarterback Brett Favre formally announced his retirement on Thursday in a press conference in Green Bay.

It was memorable, it was emotional, and above all else it was clear that it is final.

“It’s over,” Favre said as he fought at times successfully and at times in vain against the tears. “As hard as that is for me to say, it’s over.”

He spoke from the heart, without notes. Unshaven and dressed casually, wearing a slightly rumpled, partially buttoned shirt with a collar over a white cotton “T”, Favre was honest, riveting, and real.

“I thought about wearing a suit. I thought about shaving,” he said. “What you see if what you get.”

And as to his football career, what we’ve already seen is all we’re ever going to get.

“I don’t think I’ve got anything left to give,” Favre said. “I know I can play but I don’t think I want to.”

As to questions regarding why he’d leave after throwing a conference-title-deciding interception with his last official on-field action, Favre said more than once, with a hint of defiance in his voice, “I’m going out on top.”

He said later in the session, “We could have gone 3-13 this year, [but] I’m going out on top.”

Still, he acknowledged that there will be regrets. “I will wonder if I made the wrong decision. On Sundays, I’ll say I could be doing that and should be doing that.”

He thanked many former coaches by name, and he expressed awe over the fact that he will be mentioned in the same breath as other Packers greats. “There’s no better place to play,” he said.

But in the end he decided that he wasn’t enjoying the game as much as he used to. He said he spent more time in 2007 watching film, and he said he wasn’t relaxed.

Most importantly, he said that nothing that anyone from the Packers could say or do would get him to change his mind.

And so it’s over. He won’t be back. The door is shut and he is moving on.

“Its been 275 games,” he said. “At some point, it’s gotta end.”

From PFT:

PANTHERS SHOPPING PEPPERS?
Posted by Mike Florio on March 7, 2008, 2:36 p.m.
We’ve received several e-mails over the past couple of days regarding rumors that the Carolina Panthers are poised to trade defensive end Julius Peppers.

And so we’ve actually engaged in a little “real” journalism — and in some of our good, old-fashioned rumor mongering.

There are rumors in league circles that the Panthers are quietly shopping Peppers. He has a big cap number in 2007, and there’s a school of thought that the Panthers aren’t willing to pay him what it would take to keep him over the long haul, especially since the price tag could go up if/when the Ravens sign Terrell Suggs to a long-term deal.

But it takes two to do the trade tango, and we’ve yet to confirm that any of the other 31 teams have been approached about acquiring the No. 2 overall pick in the 2002 draft.

Peppers had only 2.5 sacks last season, down from 13.0 the year before. He had been expected to be in line for a Dwight Freeney-style deal with $30 million guaranteed and a $12 million per year average.

Agent Carl Carey tells PFT that he and Peppers have heard the rumors, but that they have no merit.

“We fully expect that Julius Peppers will be a Carolina Panther this football season,” Carey said.

At this point, there’s no concrete reason to believe otherwise. But unless and until Peppers signs a new contract with the Panthers, the trade whispers will continue.

This should end the Shaun Alexander era shortly. It's a dream scenario for Jones, who gets a surprise chance to start again on a productive offense. Seattle could add a rookie, but Jones should play ahead of T.J. Duckett and Maurice Morris. Jones regressed in Dallas, but he's an upgrade from Alexander and could mature late like his brother.
