im just wondering, since we're anticipating the presence of Harvey Dent on the next film, WHERE IS HARVEY DENT during the events of BATMAN BEGINS?

what do u think are the reasons that would be, or SHOULD be stated in the sequel for his absence in BB?

# my guess would be that he practiced law in another state, and also like Batman, he has come back to Gotham because he felt that Gotham needed a decent brilliant lawyer like him. may i also assume that Bruce, harvey, & Rachel were friends in their youth....

im sorry if somebody has started this thread & raised this Q already, if so, dear moderators, feel free to close it down &/or point me to a url of d thread. thanks!

I'm thinking he comes to Gotham to replace D.A. Finch but Rachel gets the job first. Harvey gets jelous/upset when rachel blows a big case and he kills her. Then later on, we find out it was him that killed her and bat's gets pissed.

I doubt it. Harvey Dent, despite his inner demons, is a good guy. It's not until he becomes Two-Face that he turns to crime. That's the tragedy of his character.

I say that he is a hotshot lawyer from New York who gets brought into Gotham to replace Finch. Dawes, who was acting as DA during the crisis, gets demoted back to Assistant DA, leading to a rivalry of sorts between the two.

He should just be transferred from another city, and could be the new DA, bumping Rachel back to Assistant DA. Also, make him a friend to Batman, not Bruce Wayne. In fact, make as little interaction between the Bruce Wayne persona and Harvey as possible, but have Batman, Gordon, and Dent make their agreement on the rooftop like they did in TLH.

Another way to go is the fact that because a District Attorney is an elected position, Harvey was already in gotham, but either a Legal Aid attorney or in private practice. So we could open the sequel with the newly elected gotham county distrcit attorney Harvey Dent.

yep. im pretty sure that they must be old friends from WAY back, since they were in their youth. it would be kind of questionable for Bruce to have come to know of Harvey Dent AFTER the events of BB. Being Batman, wouldnt you think that he minimizes his up-close relationships from that time on?

After BB, Bruce would be extra careful & would always have his "socialite mask" on. any friendship he establishes from that point would not be as close as the kind of friendship one acquires back in his youthful days, in his more innocent & honest days.

the way i see it, when he became Batman, Bruce Wayne has now become the MASK & the real Bruce Wayne has already evolved into the Batman.

Likewise, if Harvey was such a decent guy, he would not consider this bigtime rich brat-ish Jerk Bruce Wayne as somebody he could trust as a friend. Not unless he'd have known him from way back.

Alright, thanks for clearing that up. But I think my reason would be that, um, Maybe he just wasn't around. If you ask me, Nolan doesn't really have to answer the question of why Dent wasn't around to begin with. Characters come and go in movies, it's normal. But if he decides to give us a reason, I would say that TripXyDE has hit the nail right on the head. Sounds good to me either way!

Yet again, another thing I agree with. Wouldn't it be so sweet if we actually saw Dent in the movie and didn't even know it? If you watch the part where Crane is chatting with the board about having Mr. Zasz moved into Arkham, there is a guy in the background who looks A LOT like Guy Pearce. I noticed this the first time I saw Batman Begins in the Theater and just said No way, then kept watching. Didn't even remember that until now...

I agree with alot of what you said except the part about Harvey not being a friend of Bruce's. I think Harvey should be a good friend to Bruce while having a slight distrust for Batman which would intensify and turn to hatred once Harvey becomes Two-Face. Batman would be torn between bringing Two-Face to justice and trying to save his good friend Harvey Dent. That would make for a more complex and emotionally driven story.

His excuse could be that he's just been practicing law elsewhere. Though we mustn't forget that District Attorney is an elected position in the US, so they can't just "bring in" Dent to replace Finch. He needs to be elected in place. Though that could perfectly have happened in the time span between BB and BB2.

I'm for making Harvey a friend of Bruce's. Maybe they could have met during Bruce's year(s) at Princeton... They could have lost touch, but now re-kindle their friendship.

Dent can't have a slight distrust for Batman. In The Long Halloween (if you haven't read it I suggest you do), Batman, Gordon, and Dent make an alliance to bring down Carmine Falcone and stop the Holiday killings. The three of them all become good friends, and that's what makes Harvey's transformation painful to both Batman and Gordon.

I'm pretty sure B:TAS was the only time Harvey was ever made a friend to Bruce Wayne. In TLH, Harvey only interacts with Bruce Wayne on perhaps one occasion, and it's not a very friendly meeting either.

It wouldn't make much sense for Bruce and Harvey to be friends, since Bruce pretends to be the kind of guy Harvey Dent would dislike. And of course, he has to keep up that act, especially around a guy like Harvey, who could otherwise easily peice together that this guy is Batman.

Eckhart joining 'Dark Knight' castBy Borys Kit
Feb 16, 2007
Aaron Eckhart is in final negotiations to play Harvey Dent/Two Face in "The Dark Knight," Warner Bros. Pictures' sequel to "Batman Begins."

In Batman lore, Dent is the district attorney of Gotham City and an ally of Batman. After half his face is disfigured by acid, Dent becomes the insane crime boss known as Two Face. He chooses to do good or evil by flipping a coin. Tommy Lee Jones played the character in 1995's "Batman Forever."

"Knight" sees Christopher Nolan back in the director's chair with Christian Bale reprising his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine and Gary Oldman are also returning. Heath Ledger joined the cast last summer, signing up to play the sardonic and murderous villain the Joker.

The script was written by Nolan's brother, Jonathan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. Producing are Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.

Eckhart is riding high these days thanks to his acclaimed performance in "Thank You for Smoking," which nabbed him Golden Globe and Spirit Award nominations. He next stars opposite Catherine Zeta-Jones in "No Reservations," the U.S. remake of the 2001 German feature "Mostly Martha." The film will be released by Warners in July. He is also starring in the "Untitled Alan Ball Project," Ball's directorial debut.

Batman - Bale
Alfred - Caine
Ducard/Ra's - Neeson
Ra's decoy - Watanabe
Scarecrow - Murphy
Falcone - Wilkinson
Fox - Freeman
Gordon - Oldman

the only casting i didn't like Holmes and she's now replaced with the infinitely better Maggie Gyllenhaal and we also have Ledger as Joker and Eckhart as Dent.

Cool, about time we start hearing some news. As much as I don't think Maggie is that cute, she does look somewhat like Katie Holmes so she works as Rachel Dawes.

And although Aaron was my first choice for Hank Pym/Antman I'd be happy to see him as Dent. Too bad Liev Schrieber, Joaquin Phoenix, Guy Pearce, John Cusack, and others didn't make it, but Aaron Eckhardt is versatile enough to make the role his own and now if they can just get Brian Cox for Rupert Thorne, Ray Liotta as Sal Maroni, and Bob Hoskins or Timothy Spall for Penguin (ok I know he's not in the movie) and maybe Jolie or Charlieze Theron for Catwoman than we got ourselves a really kick-ass Batman sequel.

you wanna take away talent while we're at it? geez! sex appeal counts because Catwoman is a very sexual character that goes without saying, and i don't think her popularity is a GOOD thing but i'll give you 4 other reasons...

1 - versatility. yes versatility...she might have the same face, but she convincingly plays every character she's portrayed on screen. her versatility would be great for her duel identities...
2 - chemistry. Jolie is around the same age as Bale and almost always has great chemistry with the leading man.
3 - experience. she hasn't done a role like this in a while so it'd be awesome to see her let loose as a kind of sexual predator again. the fact that she's done sexual roles would help her when Catwoman is supposed to act feline-ish.
4 - her nickname is "catwoman". nuff said...

i was hoping for Phoenix or Wahlberg
they would've been good but i think they're too short. i know there's camera trickery and all but knowing that they're kinda short kills it for me...

One interesting thing in that article is that Nolan is also producing this time around (He wasn't a producer on BB). His brother wrote the script, his wife is a producer ánd besides directing he also co-wrote the TDK story. So it's pretty obvious that he's got much more creative power now.

Jolie would have been a good casting for Kyle a while back, but now she is paying the price for being too famous and in too many magazines. Not her fault, but these things are detrimental to an actor i feel.

Also, Jolie would make a terrible Catwoman. One of the many reasons is the simple fact that Jolie has the most recognizable lips in the world. I'm pretty charged about this....it's a good move. He's unconventional as in we never thought of him...but he is spot on when you think about it- much like the Ledger as Joker casting, Oldman as Gordon, and even Bale as Batman (I missed "Bale Dammit" by a year).

He is a big name, coming off of a very popular and critically acclaimed film, and has the looks and abilities to play the part. My one worry is his age- he's a little bit older than I'd had preferred (I wanted Liev and even though Liev is one year older...he just looks younger). But he'll be more than solid in the role.

This is really brightening this up for me...I just wish that they hadn't recast Dawes, but oh well.

I would've been absolutely excited if Damon or Phoenix were cast. It's too bad, but Eckhart is still a pretty satisfactory choice. I just saw him in 'Thank You For Smoking' and he can definitely hold his own.

Also, Jolie would make a terrible Catwoman. One of the many reasons is the simple fact that Jolie has the most recognizable lips in the world. You're telling me that the world's greatest detective wouldn't notice Selina Kyle was Catwoman with lips like those?

Big leap from "A Sound of Thunder" to "The Dark Knight".

Jason Reitman deserves a cut of Eckhart's paycheck for pretty much everything he's getting right now.

Batman - Bale
Alfred - Caine
Ducard/Ra's - Neeson
Ra's decoy - Watanabe
Scarecrow - Murphy

Fox - Freeman
Gordon - Oldman

the only casting i didn't like Holmes and she's now replaced with the infinitely better Maggie Gyllenhaal and we also have Ledger as Joker and Eckhart as Dent.

Well it's about damn time. I'm glad we finally have an answer, and honestly i'm happy that it's eckhart, and not will smith (members in imdb said it was official lol) anyways eckhart was a great choice. I would have also liked to have seen liev shrieber.

p.s wasn't their some fat corrupt cop named eckhart in the 1989 Batman? coincidence? only the stars can tell us, because the truth is out there . . . somewhere.

Excellent news. I had never really thought of him till the first LR report, but I think he fits the bill, physically and as an actor. He's really got the chops for it (and the chin, as everyone points out). I have a really good feeling about this movie now- anticipating it even more than BB, which didn't let me down.

Eckhart wasn't my first choice, but he's a darn good one. Great actor who can pull off the character's duality with ease, I'm sure.

Maybe Sarsgaard can pull down Black Mask or something now...

You're not kidding! But where is Freeman in the Variety article:

Eckhart is a smart choice. He's a good actor, plus he won't cost nearly as much as someone like Damon, Foxx, or Phoenix. A sticking point with a lot of "A-listers" is signing on for more than one movie, they prefer to ink better deals for each film they appear. I wouldn't be surprised if someone like Damon passed simply because he was wary of inking a two-three picture deal. WB will probably get very little drama from Eckhart in regards to signing on for more than one appearance as Dent.

As for Angelina Jolie, I agree with Hunter in that she's actually perfect for the role of Catwoman, but I'd still be surprised if WB cast her, just from an economics standpoint. Jolie earns between $10-$15 million per movie (she pocketed a career best $20 mil for "Mr. & Mrs. Smith"). Unless Jolie is willing to drop her salary (doubtful) I think WB will end up casting someone who won't cost as much. Still, if she did end up playing that part, there would be a feeding frenzy in the press. Everyone would be trying to be the first to get shots of her in the Catwoman costume. It would be insane.

Since paying The Arnold $25 million for six weeks worth of work on "Batman & Robin" (as well as the subsuquent bath the studio took on the film's less-than-thrilling box office performance), WB has been gun-shy about forking over superstar salaries in regards to their superhero franchises.

I think it is an excellent choice. It wasn't somebody who I immediately casted in my mind but certainly fits when I think about it. Nolan has managed to do that several times very successfully. And now, my biggest concern is still the fact that he knows what he's doing with Heath Ledger as Joker. I can see it working (as least the look anyway) but I'm still not entirely comfortable with it. I believe in him though.

Finally some news, and I hope that does become officially official. Barring any freak new news, I can finally say I'm glad all the other previous suggestions for Dent were rejected or didn't come to reality for whatever reason:

(no particular order):
-Hartnett: great actor but I imagine a more mature/older looking Dent.
-Philippe: I like him in other movies, but he could never have convinced me of being Dent: babyface and effeminate voice (thank goodness, this rumour made me queasy)
-Gyllenhall: again great actor, but still looks too young (even with if he grew a mustache)
-Foxx: guy is great, but no.
-Norton: great actor, but his face is not the first I would imagine for the role
-Cusack: I don't know who started that suggestion, but no.
-Jackman: I think that was wishful thinking from Prestige associations, and I don't like seeing actors crossover into 2 different comic book movie worlds, he's stuck as Wolverine, so leave him there if at all possible

I'm sure there were tons of others, but I'm alright with Eckhart, he's not a recognizable name, he's done some decent work, and he could look the part. Hope he delivers in TDK!

I'm just glad Jamie Foxx didn't get it.

I knew that was a red herring from the beginning, especially the way they had us all fooled with the Hulme, Bettany rumors floating around for months about the Joker.

I never bought the Foxx rumor at all. Although Nolan has placed acting quality as the #1 thing in his casting decisions, he has also cast actors that look like thier comic book counterparts (with the exception of Caine). Based on this, I never believed he would go after Foxx.

I remember reading that Nolan was a big fan of "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", or him saying it was the best Bond film. Bond's wife dies in that movie, and maybe this shows he's not afraid to kill Rachel off. Hopefully...:cwink:
