I forgot to send out everyone PM's to remind them the draft is today, so I'm changing the draft date to next week.

I'll also push it back later in the day since it might be easier for people to get there.

sinewave
02-24-2008, 12:12 PM
why change the draft date by a whole week at the last second for something so trivial? it clearly states on the league's home page when the draft is taking place, so whoever joined should have no reason not to know. not only that, but now you're setting it to 6PM (CST) next sunday? with 16 teams drafting 25 positions, it's going to take about 4-5 hours to complete the draft. that'll end really late on a sunday night. at this point, i can only assume this was some poorly thought out plan to piss those of us off who had already set the whole afternoon aside so we'd quit the league to allow your buddies to join. well, guess what, it worked. i'm out. please remove me from the league.

I have to say when I saw Sinewave snap, I thought his theory was a little out there...

Now there is all of a sudden a newbie who just happened to sign up for The Hype and find out about a this thread who wants to join the baseball league...

Seems pretty obvious to me.

interesting turn of events.

pretty lame to suddenly change the draft day by a week at the very last moment for something that most of us didn't care about at all. but whatever, its not as big a deal to me as it was to sinewave.

indeed, but did you even bother to see who was online at the time? personally, i didn't get on until half an hour beforehand. and a pm from you the night before wouldn't have changed that. i got my reminder from yahoo days ago.

Not everyone checks their email though.

while that is true, more people check their e-mail than their superhero hype pm folder.

whatever, this is pointless. you decided to postpone it, which is obviously your choice. there is also no way you could have accurately predicted someone would be pissed off enough to drop out, so i dont really buy that you planned that sort of thing out.

just an unfortunate combination of events i guess.

heaven forbid you and crawdad make an unbalanced trade at some point though...

look, this isn't a big deal. sorry if i blew things out of proportion. i wasn't too jazzed about playing in a 16-team league anyway and i was considering dropping out since spidey asked me to so one of his friends could join. i wouldn't have been able to make the draft this weekend, anyway. have fun with the league. i'll see some of you in badger's league.

Kingfish

alot of people will just take a-rod first.

i'll take an outside shot in the dark and say hanley though.

Spidey-Bat

I was being honest, I thought you'd say that. Or were at least insinuating.

I was only asking for peoples' opinions.

Unless I knew Santana was going to have a Bob Gibson type season, I wouldn't draft him first overall.

It works both ways, one could say your ace would get more quality starts

Except you're limiting his number of starts thus chances of quality starts. If a guy like Santana can make 32 starts in a 5-man rotation but only 27 in a 6-man rotation, that's 5 fewer games where you aren't using your best pitcher and could lose a playoff spot because of it.

Jerry!
02-27-2008, 08:46 PM
I swear, if I am able to do the draft, and I get the first pick......Scott Podsednik.

I'd go with A-Rod first, but Hanley is not a bad pick. I'd have him rated right at the top.

NewYorkSpider

Who's on your team?

Spidey-Bat
03-01-2008, 11:30 PM
Hitters: Brian McCann, Prince Fielder, Ian Kinsler, Hanley Ramirez, Mark Reynolds, Grady Sizemore, Raul Ibanez, Delmon Young, Ryan Garko, Jay Bruce, Joey Votto, Evan Longoria, and Casey Kotchman.

Pitchers: Johan Santana, Felix Hernandez, Chad Billingsley, Yovani Gallardo, Greg Maddux, Jon Garland, Billy Wagner, Joe Borowski, Pat Neshek, Kerry Wood, and Peter Moylan.

I traded Matt Cain, Homer Bailey, and Jhonny Peralta for Hanley Ramirez and Yovani Gallardo (guy was desperate for pitching). I traded Kurt Suzuki for Casey Kotchman (guy needed a C really bad and had Pujols). Traded Josh Beckett and Jonathan Papelbon for Johan Santana and Billy Wagner (guy was a Red Sox homer so I took advantage of that). I picked up Garland on FA's. I'm trying to get Chris Young (the OF) from the Red Sox homer.

Some of them are 2007 and 2008 players. I was just having fun. What does it matter to you anyway? Besides, it seems like you disagreed with like every other pick there was in the draft anyway.

Juan Rivera? The guy who was out from April to early September. Willits is going to have more playing time than him. And Matthews will lose his job very soon since he blows...hard. Anderson is old and injury prone. Vlad is becoming that, too. Willits is going have the same amount of playing time as last year.

That's what I'm pretty much thinking.

Mike Scioscia loves small ball. Willits is a small ball player. He's going to be more than a pinch runner. Especially with an OF full of ailing, old veterans.

the thing you're overlooking is that the angels lineup is already full of small ball players. figgins/matthews/hunter/izturis/aybar/kendrick to an extent. good for you to think matthews blows. he's still not losing his job for a long time. and if anderson gets hurt? they'll need power. thats why rivera would start ahead of willits.

Hunter is a small ball player? The west coast must really be another planet. Hunter is a 260-270 hitter who will hit 25 HR, 30 at most if he's lucky. Matthews is a declining OF. Right now, he's so-so and barely better than Willits, if at all. He is no great threat on Willits' playing time. Izturis and Aybar are infielders and have nothing to do with Willits. Even if they were OF, Willits is the superior player. You're right, they need power. That's where Casey Kotchman comes in.

hunter isn't the biggest small ball player in the world but he still knows how to steal a base and lay down a bunt. he'll do more of both this season. the only point i was even trying to make by naming the other players was to demonstrate that the lineup already has a number of small ball players. if they lose anderson for any extended time, i'm confident they will choose rivera's power over willits. matthews is better than willits, particularly at fantasy. 10 fewer stolen bases and 20 more homeruns. i appreciate your opinions of him, i've shared them at times, but in this case you're wrong. as for kotchman providing power, thats just not his game. at this point in his career he should hit 12-15.

and as i said, i really like willits as a player. he is a major league starter, but not on the angels right now. i don't undervalue him, my opinions are based on the amount of playing time he'll recieve. you can't have that kind of value getting 8 ABs a week. his one category will be steals since he'll be running for anderson, kotchman, and napoli quite a bit. also, it's worth noting that he had surgery last month to remove his gall bladder. that makes me hesitant about him as well.

and funny, this isn't the first time i've seen someone over-value a player they're trying to trade, so i guess we're even.

He'll do more stealing and bunting? Why? You already have admitted the Angels' lineup has small ball hitters. His role now is going to be to drive those runs in.

Even though Rivera played 14 games and had 43 ABs while Reggie Willits proved he can put up a productive 430 AB season?

matthews is better than willits, particularly at fantasy. 10 fewer stolen bases and 20 more homeruns.
Ok, Matthews won HR last year while Willits only won BA, OBP, and SB. You're right. What was I thinking Willits was a better player?

If you're not convinced, I'll break it down even more.

i appreciate your opinions of him, i've shared them at times, but in this case you're wrong. as for kotchman providing power, thats just not his game. at this point in his career he should hit 12-15.

Showtime has reignited the spirit of competition within me. Back to the pointless debate about a trade I have nothing to do with.

He'll do more stealing and bunting? Why? You already have admitted the Angels' lineup has small ball hitters. His role now is going to be to drive those runs in.

For the exact reason you stated earlier. Because he plays for Mike Scioscia now. Being able to bunt and steal are big parts of the line-up and have been for years. It's really the entire reason they signed him. Because he can play Mike Scioscia baseball.

Even though Rivera played 14 games and had 43 ABs while Reggie Willits proved he can put up a productive 430 AB season?

And Rivera has proven in an almost identical amount of ABs that he can hit 20+ homeruns and drive in 80. He hasn't lost those skills. The ABs he had at the end of last year showed he could still hit.

Ok, Matthews won HR last year while Willits only won BA, OBP, and SB. You're right. What was I thinking Willits was a better player?

Matthews also had 40 more RBIs. The point is Matthews is a better run producer. And he clearly will be this year since he'll be batting second in front of Vlad. He was miscast hitting fifth. I know you think he'll lose his job and I've already told you he won't. Combine that with better health and he'll improve on those numbers. Sadly Willits won't. If someone gets hurt, he'll at best be in a platoon with Rivera. If not, he'll start maybe once a week and pinch-run.

If you're not convinced, I'll break it down even more.

I really wish you wouldn't. I've already stated I like Willits as a player and I wish he was a starter. He probably will be when Anderson walks after this season. The point is, with the current situation and players the Angels have he won't get the same playing time he did last year. For that reason, I am stating that Matthews is a better fantasy option right now. And I really don't care how much you swear Matthews sucks and will lose his job.

Many believe Kotchman will have a breakout year.

I also happen to be one of those people. It's just not with HRs. Casey isn't a power hitter, he's a doubles hitter. If he can stay healthy, he'll put up great run production numbers, maybe even drive in 100, but I still don't see him hitting more than 15 bombs.

Willits will be getting more than 8 ABs a week. You honestly think Matthews is going to be good enough to steal his playing time?

Since when is it Willits playing time to steal? The only reason Reggie got to start last year was because of injuries to Anderson. He's a one year player going up against a vet with 4 years left on his contract. I'm also somewhat concerned about the surgery Willits had last month. Matthews won't be used as a bench player. The most likely scenario is Willits plays part time this year and becomes a starter again next season when Anderson walks and Guererro becomes the DH.

And BA, OBP, hits, and runs.

I've covered this enough. He can be helpful in those categories if he starts. Only problem is he isn't starting. With the playing time he'll get, steals will be the only thing he can really help with.

Willits is considered a sleeper.

Good for Reggie. To be where he is after being a nothing before last season is awesome. But unless he gets traded this spring, he won't be that helpful to a fantasy team.

Again I love Willits as a player. His intensity and heart are fantastic. He reminds me alot of Darin Erstad with those intangibles. His situation immediately began to suck when Hunter was signed. I just hope he continues to do what he can do until the time he becomes a full-time starter again. Which sadly won't be soon.

I don't have one either, you'll live, just make sure you win in other categories.

many players consider saves a puntable category anyway as long as you make up for it in other stats. there are no definate closers left in the FA pool, just gambles on players becoming closers.

Joey Devine. He was traded from the Braves to the A's for Mark Kotsay. Huston Street may not start out as the close since he was out a lot last year. Plus Street will likely be traded. Neshek will pick up some saves and may even be the full time closer if Nathan is traded. Rafael Perez will probably pick up some saves as well.

If you say so. It's not like Street was hurt at the end of the season, he was back throwing strong. Highly unlikely he'll be traded this season either, since he only makes 3 million and is still in his arbitration years i believe. Beane would have to get a monster return to trade him. Plus Devine hasn't even thrown 20 innings in the big leagues so I doubt they'll just hand him the job. He's behind Foulke and Embree on the depth chart anyway.

Spidey-Bat

Beane is obviously in rebuilding mode. Since relievers are more often traded at the deadline, it's not unlikely for Street to be traded. Would not be surprised if a prospect-rich team trades for Street.

Like stole bases, Beane finds saves to be overrated. He's always believed in "selling the closer".

And Devine will be 2nd to close very shortly. Foulke has virtually nothing left and Embree is bad.

So Street will be traded at the deadline? How does that make Devine a closer?

It's a possibility. If he was, you need someone to close. Devine is their long term solution. Only makes sense for him to replace Street.

All i know is you said you had 3 closers, i asked who your third closer was and you said Devine. Who (as always barring injury) wouldn't become the closer until more than likely the trading deadline, and that's assuming that they do in fact trade Street, which isn't too likely since Beane would ask for the moon for him.

Hmmmmmm. Seems to me like you have 2 closers.

Ok. I have 2 guaranteed closers, 2 possible closers after the deadline, and 1 reliever who is likely to pick up a couple saves during the season. Happy now?
