That movie deserved to be underrated. It wasnt very good. I expected so much more because those Digital Shorts are hilarious.
I'm a sucker for mindless comedy, especially when people get hurt.

Same here, dude! Things are going great. Just enjoying my fairly simplistic semester. Had a hell of a week working on the first episode of my new late night show for University TV, but it's a big hit.

Continuous, although there's a rumor going around that they may shut down the studio early this semester, because they're going to be renovationg the building. We're having a meeting about it on Monday. As long as it stays up, it'll be continuous.

zimmer wrote a theme for batman. he didn't introduce that part of the score until the credits because he felt that since batman was still developing, he hadn't earned the big hero theme. at the end of the film he is truly batman, thus has earned the theme. so in TDK we'll hear a bigger better version of the end theme from BB, which is batman's theme

btw, how would a story map of "American Psycho" look? you seem somewhat adept at these things so I'll let you have at it.
Here's a whack at it:
MDQ - will Patrick Bateman get a hold of his homicidal tendencies?
Inciting incident - Patrick kills a homeless man
Plot point 1 - Patrick kills Paul Allen
Midpoint - Patrick starts being investigated by the detective played by Dafoe
Plot point 2 - Patrick goes on his rampage and kills a lot of people
Climax - Patrick confronts his lawyer about the murders but it's discovered that he may not have committed them.
Women always want it bigger...
It was the first time I've asked. Men want it bigger more often than women do. :cwink:
I find it fascinating that breast augmentation is more often talked about publicly, but most of the spam I get is about how I can make my hypothetical penis bigger. :lmao:

Bigger is only better either when they're not attached to you, or if you don't have to do anything athletic.
My well-endowed friends often tell me how much of a pain they are, especially when working out. Now I feel grateful that I can pretend they don't exist most of the time. :oldrazz:

well you could probably make them in almost any picture program. but these are editted from sprites from technos japan games. otherwise known as kunio-kun. (super dodgeball and river city ransom are examples).
so i use the images from those games and edit them, and then put them together to make animations.
i do it in a program called gamemaker (which is free). it's used to make simple games, but it also has it's own image editor. which allows u to work pixel by pixel. which makes small images like this much easier.
then i edit the timing of each frame in a gif editor.

i think the main difference between us and the ones who act, is that well, to put it harshly, they're crazy in my opinion.
the thought to chain the doors of a college building and kill as many people as you can before the cops storm it is something that has absolutely no justification. and they have lost their minds, whatever caused them to do this is what sucks tho, (anxiety, depression, "they don't fit in")

I don't know; only reason why I don't do what I do is because of consequences. I wouldn't feel as bad because I honestly believe we need more tragedies.
As for his reasons; there are many reasons why. Now I don't think he is right; nor do I think he had a good reason. I believe he is pretty normal like all of us but was pushed to an edge mentally that caused him to stumble; and he didn't have the experience to handle it. Also I believe there was a chemical dysfunction that did not help the circumstances.

Well, that's the thing. It's not meant to be a purposeful, life-changing film -- it's just meant to present a totally refined way of film making. Sure, various other projects have adopted a similar shooting method, but none have used it for a film such as this.
I don't know about you guys, but I thought it was one of the most realistic and believable films I've ever seen. Cinema is designed to engulf the audience -- it's meant to bring you, almost physically, into the action. Well, the shooting method in Cloverfield is by far the most effective way to accomplish that fear.
I thought it was absolutely fantastic, and was terrifyingly brilliant throughout. Artistically refined in every way.

yea i definitely think that anyone is capable of reaching whatever mental struggles and obstacles he had, but in his case i guess consequences soon goes out of the picture once he reached that certain point. where for us like u said we think of consequences before thinking or doing bad things

Well if had no point then I really don't want to see it. I didn't really felt engulfed nor did I relate or cared if the characters lived or died. I actually was wanting them to die.
Also if it isn't meaning to strive for some sort of message then its a terrible story; and it failed in the art of story telling. Special effects aside; it was crap. But thats where we are different

Also if it isn't meaning to strive for some sort of message then its a terrible story; and it failed in the art of story telling. Special effects aside; it was crap. But thats where we are different
Well, obviously there's a message in there, because the entire film was played around the love angle between the main guy and the woman who we are first introduced to at the beginning of the film. That's why the film ended the way it did, because monsters -- who are, in my opinion, being symbolic of terrorism in our world today -- can come to your home and destroy it, but they can never take away your love.
It's not an original message to convey, but it's still noteworthy for the context of the story. If you didn't like the shooting method, then to each their own, I guess...
But if you are willing to open your mind and see the greatness of such camera-work, then more power to you. The more you block it out, the more closed-minded you are being toward cinema. I mean, cinema is about inventing new things and new ways of film making. This was just another step into a larger world for cinema, and I can guarantee that more films will adopt this strategic way of film making. From an artistic viewpoint, that's how powerful it is.

but to tell u the truth im not really looking forward to mid-april this year, as i get the feeling almost every year some nut is gonna bring a gun to school during that time and start shooting
Honestly; I am not worried. I think tragedies like this are good and needed. Our culture is becoming too soft. Though that is bad, I believe that tragedies such as this unite people and help us move forward.

The most you block it out, the more closed-minded you are being toward cinema. I mean, cinema is about inventing new things and new ways of film making. This was just another step into a larger world for cinema, and I can guarantee that more films will adopt this strategic way of film making. From an artistic viewpoint, that's how powerful it is.
Well calling me stubborn is definitly the way to continue a civil convo.
Good job.
I just didn't see it as that. It was very 2D and Blair Witch with a giant monster movie front. I am glad you found it as a break through movie that you could nut to; but I on the other hand found it to be very superficial and nausiating. I am pretty open minded about everything and will give it another chance later, but that is my judgment as of yet.

i haven't seen the movie, but meh to your last paragraph. i agree to a certain extent, but i wouldn't necessarily call this method brilliant. was blair witch a masterpiece? maybe you think it is.
there's not a whole lot of room for this style. it has it's advantages, it adds a realistic feel to a movie. but how many movies can be done that way?
not too many. in fact, i would bet that cloverfield 2 is shot traditionally, because the novelty (and that's what it is) of the style serves no purpose in a sequel. how long can you follow various people around in such a way?

I would have loved it if they had like other POV's of the whole thing. Like a news Anchor; someone watching from afar; someone in the military and someone on the ground like it was done. Then you could have had it not be a roller coaster for 1 hour and 30 minutes.

yea i definitely think that anyone is capable of reaching whatever mental struggles and obstacles he had, but in his case i guess consequences soon goes out of the picture once he reached that certain point. where for us like u said we think of consequences before thinking or doing bad things
well he was actually declared mentally ill too so, thats something not everyone has
I think you do have to be mentally ill to go on a mass shooting spree on people you don't know.
I mean, if it was just an anger management issue, people would go after those who had tormented them or made them angry or whatever, but on people you've never met? That's mental illness.
Honestly; I am not worried. I think tragedies like this are good and needed. Our culture is becoming too soft. Though that is bad, I believe that tragedies such as this unite people and help us move forward.
Why do you think it's too soft? Heck, I think there's a pervasive culture of fear and paranoia right now. Long ago, people didn't have to lock their doors. I would consider that soft, LOL. Not what we have right now.
Now if you mean soft as in irresponsibility, it depends on where you grew up and what you're familiar with. Judging from the mainstream media, you'd think that everyone was like Paris Hilton, but there are plenty of young people doing good things for society at the same time.

cap'n, you like no country for old men.
i don't know if u read books, but no country was written by cormac mccarthy. and he won the pulitzer this year for "the road." i read it yesterday and i thought it was awesome. i think you might like it. it's bleak. and it's depressing. and it's tedious in some ways. but i thought it was really good =D
there are some people who don't like it, but most do. no chapters. and it's written kinda weird. but that's his style. he doesn't use puncuation and stuff.
it's good. if you read books, check it out. i actually dont read books. this was only the second novel i ever read. but i'm trying to start reading.

Not calling you stubborn, chief. Just saying that most things we don't think we can enjoy, from a personal perspective, can be enjoyed if we simply open our minds and make an effort.
The film makers put in the effort for us so we should put the effort in for them, I assume...
i haven't seen the movie, but meh to your last paragraph. i agree to a certain extent, but i wouldn't necessarily call this method brilliant. was blair witch a masterpiece? maybe you think it is.
This plays into the point I made earlier. Blair Witch was an interesting film, but Cloverfield is better, due mainly to the fact that it is shot in a better environment and has a greater cinematic feel to it.
there's not a whole lot of room for this style. it has it's advantages, it adds a realistic feel to a movie. but how many movies can be done that way?
I actually think that many films can be shot in this way, but not many film makers would dare to adopt this style, because methinks that it can only work well for horror flicks, as opposed to action flicks such as James Bond and Batman.
not too many. in fact, i would bet that cloverfield 2 is shot traditionally, because the novelty (and that's what it is) of the style serves no purpose in a sequel. how long can you follow various people around in such a way?
Oh, I agree. This method of shooting does not serve to set-up a sequel film, but that doesn't really matter, does it? Because cinema isn't about sequels. It's about the film, itself, and how it works well.

Hmm, I didn't know that. Thanks for the info.
It will be very interesting to see how they decide to shoot the sequel. But, like you said, it's all about the novelty. "Cloverfield", in of itself, works, because of the shooting method. It might not bode too well in a sequel, because the novelty will be lost. But that novelty would be lost because it was taken to the limit in the first film, which a good thing.

yeah, that's why it would be a good idea to ditch it and take a traditional approach and build a franchise, because i think that was the original intention. i think JJ said at one point that he wanted america to have it's own monster. that sounds he like he wants a franchise. if he can build one, cool. so the sequel will likely be a classic-style monster movie, shot traditionally. maybe not though. but i definitely think that would be the right move

Yeah, I kind of agree with you. I don't think that using the "handheld camera" shooting style would be a good way to shoot the sequel, but I'm relatively open to the concept.

Probably wouldn't work for action flicks. We've already seen how tight and shaky camera work was SO well-loved by Batman fans in BB. :oldrazz:
I agree that it would probably only work for films where you want to stick people right in the film experience, so it would probably be relegated to thrillers or horror. It increases suspense that way.
I mean soft in the sense that they don't know a tragedy as a whole. There are certain cases all the time of tragedy; but non that snap people out of this comfort of life that it is now.

It's drastically different from where I'm seeing. I was surrounded by kids who wanted that perfect SAT score and the highest GPA. I was jaded by the fact that that's all they wanted. :oldrazz: But I guess if it isn't one thing, it's always another.
I don't think it's wrong that children should be shielded from tragedy. It really does a number on you mentally, and after having so many terrible things happen to you, I imagine it would simply numb you after a while. I didn't go to a funeral until well into college, but every time I hear about people dying overseas or terrorist attacks or whatever, I'm saddened by it.
I do agree that kids nowadays are often coddled too much, even well into adulthood. My parents did a big favor for me by paying for my college tuition, but I understand that they didn't have to, and now I live on my own and make my own money. Although, I don't see anything wrong with adults being supported by their parents as long as they know that it's a sacrifice and don't think that it's some kind of obligation. I have friends trying to break into the film business who are still being supported by their parents, but they try to be responsible about it.

HAH! I don't usually like Timberlake, but that photo's hilarious.
And I don't know if there's any real way to relate to someone who guns down random people. I mean, I was made fun of as a kid, I was never popular or anything, but I learned to ignore that kind of crowd since I didn't want anything to do with them anyway. I would never hurt anyone, and that's why I just don't understand people who go to such lengths to hurt others.

Yeah - I mean, the hand held shooting-technique is designed specifically to create mass-panic. It does that effectively in Cloverfield, IMO. Along with the sound-work and the denotative camera techniques; it created a lot of panic and I genuinely felt as though I was apart of the action.
It wouldn't work in an action film because an action film wouldn't be able to create that type of panic that you feel when watching a horror flick. Also, am I the only one here who felt as though I was still watching the movie AFTER leaving the cinema? The camera method sticks to your mind like glue. As soon as I looked around outside I could just envision a building blowing up or a big monster tearing around it. That's how powerful it is.
and i was mentioning earlier how in certain films now when i see characters shooting other characters for no real reason i tend to think of VT for some reason (i used the Joker shooting his goons in the prologue as a small example, prob because the Joker had a Glock(ish) type of weapon too)

of course there are psychos out there for sure, but what really confuses me is the NIU shooting, because that guy was well educated, and generally liked by people, and then he did what he did. in his case they're bringing anxiety/depression medications into the picture

Who is saying that mass murders are actually mass in of them self? Not everyone reported actually does anything just has suspicious activity. It would probably discourage kids from displaying signs of their frustration. Also from my experience it is mostly a cry for help and gets treated very seriously.
