If the Idol franchise is more of a hindrance than a help these days, Clarkson remains the best example of what can go right.
Kelly Clarkson knows her numbers.
"Per capita I'm more popular in Australia than anywhere else in the world," the singer declares. There is still a decent taste of small-town Texan drawl in her voice, despite the years she has spent on the road and in the studio since winning the first series of American Idol in 2002.
If the Idol franchise is more of a hindrance than a help to young hopefuls these days, Clarkson remains the best example of what can go right. Her second album, Breakaway, established her as a star.
The album sold 11 million copies worldwide, linking pop song hooks to rock production. Singles such as Since U Been Gone and Because Of You remain staples of commercial radio.
Clarkson's liking for Australia was strengthened because of the comparative success of her most recent album, 2007's My December. Sombre in parts and heavier in tone, it reportedly raised the ire of Clarkson's American label, RCA, which considered it commercially unsound.
Not that Clarkson considers sales her defining motive.
"It wasn't even that big a deal - it got blown up," she says. "It's one of those steps in your career that you have to go through. The press ran with it and made it pretty intense.
"There are different types of success in a career and I had to write those songs. Ten years from now I don't want to look back and go, 'Why did I agree to sing that?' That's my biggest fear."
After the album came out, Clarkson cancelled an arena tour of America that wasn't selling, forfeiting large guarantees for just turning up, and changed management.
She started this year co-headlining a sold-out tour of her homeland with country star Reba McEntire. The pair sang harmonies on each other's songs and mixed their respective styles - the opening number was Patsy Cline's Sweet Dreams, sung by McEntire, that segued into the Eurythmics tune of the same name, sung by Clarkson.
Clarkson's own tour runs until April, finishing in Europe. The 25-year-old admits that after the emotional distress that inspired the material on My December (sample song titles: Judas and Sober) and the difficulties releasing it, 2008 is proving a better year. There's even vindication of a sort for My December in the response of her fans at meet-and-greet functions on tour.
"It is kind of weird because they don't know me on a daily basis but they have some kind of connection with the music that means they'll totally open their heart in a five-minute meet-and-greet," Clarkson says. "They'll tell me things they'll never tell anyone else. It's kind of cool but also weird - there are times when I'm not sure how I should respond. Music is powerful: it's a drug that makes your inhibitions go away and leaves your vulnerabilities exposed."
Recently Clarkson even penned a sequel to My December's closing track, Irvine - a song she describes as a "prayer" for salvation and one she refuses to perform live because of the memories it holds. The new track is called I Finally Got It Right.
"I meet a lot of people in this business who are so worried about being No.1 - they'll write the most vanilla-generic song and go with it because it's safe. In this industry nowadays, where sales aren't what they used to [be] and radio airplay is tough, people lose touch - not just with their fans but with reality. I don't ever want to be like that."

She was okay when starting out, but she looks progressively more attractive. Still the best winner from Idol (although Underwood is gaining ground on her).

What's see been doing lately? Last time I heard anything was when her last album was coming out and all this controversy with her and her label.
All that 'controversy' was blown way out of proportion by the media. They made it seem like Clive hated her album because she decided to write and produce her songs with her band instead of working with big name producers, which is partially true only that Clive hasn't liked any of her albums including Breakaway.
She's touring and working on a new album right now.
Well, no.............really it wasn't blown out of proportion, it was as bad as was reported........she had to fight for the songs on that CD, some artists fight for their songs, and some don't. She, in reality, doesn't really like writing her own music......and I think that put alot of pressure on her for the last CD. She enjoys touring, she enjoys recording......but writing is not one of her favorite things to do........
It was a hail storm with Clive Davis............Clive likes "yes" people around him......and most Texas women are not "yes" people, and he found that out the hard way. She respects the hell out of Reba, and when her contract came up with Clive, she simply decided to not sign, and she has signed with Reba's label............
Kelly's first CD was a "yes" album for "19" and "RCA" and Clive. It wasn't her. Her 2nd CD, was closer to who she is, but wasn't close enough for her. Her 3rd CD was Kelly's frustration in life....lol...........She had a hell year that year in her personal life as well as public life, and I think the CD showed that. I hated the first 4 songs on the CD, but the rest IMO, was awesome.

OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder has confirmed that he is working on new material with Kelly Clarkson.
Tedder, who co-wrote and produced Leona Lewis's number one hit 'Bleeding Love', told DS that Clarkson's new songs will feature "big choruses" and "heavy drum programming".
He also revealed that the songs are influenced by nineties electro-rockers Garbage, while one song, a mid-tempo rock ballad, features an experimental bridge inspired by Mozart.
Clarkson reportedly clashed with her record label over the musical direction of her last album, 2007's My December, after Sony BMG chief Clive Davis deemed it less commercial than her previous releases.

Well, unless you are a "proven" songwriter......I could see why a label would rather you put your time and energy towards performing and recording.
I doubt they mind, working on a couple of songs together with the songwriters.....
I can also understand an artist, wanting to write songs that THEY WANT TO SING, and if what they are being given is not what they want, then they are going to write it, and fight for it.....damn that fighting for it would be stressful as hell....
Well, he made those specific comments after Kelly had two big hits with 'Behind The Hazel Eyes' and 'Because of You', songs that she wrote herself. She also won an ASCAP for song of the year with 'Because Of You'.

A source told the gossip rag that Clarkson prances around in the buff even when her home is "filled with strangers for photo shoots or fittings."

Kelly Clarkson just released the cover for her upcoming single, “My Life Would Suck Without You.” Looks like she’s really prepping for Valentine’s Day with that heart lollipop of hers!
The song, which was written by Max Martin and Dr. Luke, will be released to radio on January 19. The 26-year-old original American Idol champ is scheduled to release her fourth studio album on March 17, 2009

i’m headed to london today for some album promo and i’m so freakin’ excited!! i’m ready for y’all to hear this album! i’m so proud of it!! i think it’s 4 more days and my first single drops at radio and i’m super super pumped!! we decided the cover of the album and just in case you haven’t seen it i’ll post it! it’s very colorful and they have definitely photo-shopped the crap out of me but i don’t care haha! whoever she is, she looks great ha! i’ve had so much fun with this album i really hope y’all dig it woohooooooooooo!!!!
and by the way, i’m now on ‘eclipse’ of the twilight series and so is my mom, my sister and all of my friends …..you could say we’re a bit addicted and all searching for our very own personal ‘edward’ …..and yes, in the most pathetic way possible ha :)

I know she looked weird at last weeks pre-grammy party, but I blame that on her horrible hair style and awful dress choice. Kelly's a thick girl and light blue just doesn't look good on her. Plus, the way the dress fit did nothing to accentuate her waist and ass.

The former 'American Idol' star is in her purest form on the new album.
The fourth album from pop's most sympathetic rebel girl, Kelly Clarkson, has nearly as many mandates attached to it as a certain economic stimulus plan.
The record label execs who objected to the emotionally loaded, tough-sell hard rock of 2007's "My December" are hoping for a massive, industry-saving hit. The critics who love her spunk but question her sensibility desire artful pop with a little bit of red meat. The "Idol" watchers and Top 40 listeners who made her a star in the first place want the perfect blend of sincerity and catchiness to lift their spirits during a year when nobody needs another breakup album.
Clarkson, ever the overachiever, has delivered on all counts. "All I Ever Wanted" is a masterful rapprochement with the mainstream, full of cheerfully ear-snagging tunes, inventive production, exhilarating vocals and enough inherent Kelly-ness to put aside fears that her label bosses implanted blond electrodes in her brain to make her behave.
"All I Ever Wanted" -- due March 10 but leaked online -- also fulfills the one requirement that makes Clarkson a top-shelf pop star worth loving: It provides her faithful female fans with a solid group of anthems and introspective moments expressing dignity, independence and emotional truthfulness.
The first single, the desperately radio-friendly "My Life Would Suck Without You," wasn't a good sign: Ripping off one's biggest previous hit isn't a path toward self-discovery. But that album opener simply announces a rousing, if slightly overloaded, collection of ballads and barn-burners well serving the needs of Kelly's girls for a big scream and a good cry.
Anyone who's been to a Clarkson show and seen the earnest love her female fans express knows this is where her work goes beyond entertainment to affect lives. Without uttering the word "feminism," she applies its principles within pop formulas now more often used to sell peep-show thrills, greed and cynicism.
Clarkson works her every-superwoman magic within a few different phone booths here. She removes the cartoon mannerisms from two songs co-penned by Katy Perry; her version of "I Do Not Hook Up," a song cowritten by Kara DioGuardi and produced by modern rock heavy Howard Benson, should be heard by every teen girl contemplating chucking her purity ring.
Her collaborations, including several cowrites, with mood-rock hit maker Ryan Tedder take the opposite approach. They insinuate instead of shouting, showing how the self-described "limestone rock" sound Coldplay perfected with Brian Eno can work as a vehicle for feminine yearning. The albums' sequencing presents the quieter Tedder material as a mini-suite, resulting in an energy drag; that's too bad, because individually considered, each track is gently memorable.
Pop addicts looking for fizzier stuff will prefer the work Clarkson did with former Color Me Badd member Sam Watters and his partner Louis Biancaniello, including some covers of tunes by Oklahoma-based unknowns Aranda. The title track evokes the soul-rock fusions of Timbaland and Rihanna, while "Whyyouwannabringmedown" gives Clarkson a chance to howl the way she's wanted to since her grunge-loving teen years.
"All I Ever Wanted" also has a couple of the old-fashioned tear-jerkers that Clarkson does so well -- "Cry," which she cowrote, and songbird Keri Noble's "If No One Will Listen," which she produced -- and an apparent Pink tribute song, "Don't Let Me Stop You."
The album is a generous helping of the Kelly so many love -- yes, Photoshopped and slicked up, but with her big, brilliantly accessible heart and voice intact.

The 26-year-old American Idol champ’s performance will air this Friday on Regis. Tomorrow, Kelly and Kanye West will perform on American Idol’s elimination show.
Kelly was recently asked about her collaboration with Katy Perry for the song “I Do Not Hook Up.” She tells Elle, “It has a cool message: It’s saying it’s okay to not be the girl who parties too much and sleeps around; it’s okay to be the girl who wants something solid. I believe in that.”

Her album is on track to debut at number one this week, beating out U2. This'll be her second number one album. Thankful was her first. Breakaway debuted at number 3, and My December debuted at 2.

And, as expected, Kelly has the number one album on Billboards 200. She sold 255,000. Her last album, My December, sold 291,000 in first week sales. But her second album, Breakway, which is by far her biggest, sold only 250,000 it's first week.

Kelly Clarkson revealed in a new radio interview that she's already begun working on her 5th studio album and says that it's going to be "really different."
Kelly also said she may not have time to write the whole album as she's touring to promote her latest album All I Ever Wanted until March 2010.
"If I end up liking stuff that I've done then I'll include it, but if I like other stuff better I'll use that. Sometimes you're just more inspired I guess, and sometimes if you have records that come ou really close together it might be more other people's songs. Because there's not enough time to write and sing and perform and do everything."
She signed a 5 record deal, so this may be her last RCA record. At least I hope it is. . .
