Former Rangers skipper on his new role with star-studded Hollywood United
By Brian McIver In Los Angeles
AS a guy who has played football at the highest level around the world, Richard Gough is used to sharing the field with the biggest stars.
But even the former Rangers and Scotland idol was taken aback when he looked over to the touchline and saw Superman warming up.
That was the case last weekend when Gough was one of the Scots taking part in the most star-studded football game in history - as part of Hollywood United.
HUFC are the side with more famous names than Celtic, Rangers, Manchester United and Chelsea put together. The Los Angeles-based squad is made up of some of the biggest stars from football, music, TV and movies and get together to play the beautiful game in the land of beautiful people.
As well as Gough, who has settled in nearby San Diego with his family, former professionals Frank Leboeuf (A World Cup winner with France) and American Alexei Lalas (David Beckham's old boss at LA Galaxy) also play for the celebrity team.
The club was formed 18 years ago in Santa Monica by British ex-pats, including Sex Pistol Steve Jones, who missed a regular game of football and gradually attracted more and more big names as word spread.
And the amateur team has earned a reputation as the most glamorous in the USA, even though they play in the shadow of LA Galaxy star Beckham.
The Hollywood United stars all turned out last weekend for a high-profile charity game at LA Galaxy's home ground, the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, and were joined by a multi-millionaire teamsheet of some of the most well-known faces in Tinsel Town.
Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), Skeet Ulrich (Jericho and Scream), Danny Cannon (director of Goal! and CSI), Donal Logue (ER and Max Payne), Damian Lewis (Band of Brothers), Heroes stars Santiago Cabrera and Jimmy Jean Louis, Sex And The City hunk GillesMarini plus Anthony LaPaglia ofWithout A Trace fame were all in action.
And some of the musicians on the pitch included Billy Duffy of The Cult, Vivian Campbell of Def Leppard, Sex Pistol Jones and Benji Madden, lead singer of Good Charlotte.
As well as Gough, renowned Scots actor Tony Curran (This Life, League of Extraordinary Gentleman and Flight Of The Phoenix) was also taking part in his first Hollywood United fixture, playing for rival side Champions United in the fund-raising match for victims of Hurricane Ike which devastated Texas recently.
Tony, 39, was playing on the right flank for Champions and the Celtic fan from Glasgow, who is about to start filming a pilot for a major new TV project, was given high praise from Gough, who described the ginger actor as "a wee Jimmy Johnstone up the wing".
Tony said: "This has been a great day and it's so enjoyable to get a good game of football. I still watch matches from back home when I get the chance, but it's really nice to play and I'd definitely come back for another game.
"It's funny to think I'm playing against Leboeuf, who won the World Cup, and Goughie. Everyone has been having a great laugh and it's all in a worthwhile cause."
As one of the most experienced players on the pitch, Gough was Hollywood United's defensive linchpin and loved the run-out.
The former Scotland hero and Rangers captain now lives by the beach in a suburb of San Diego and is in the property business.
He said: "I love the quiet life out here and enjoy coming up for the games. It's good to do something like this for all the people who suffered from the hurricane.
"I don't play much, but usually come up for the charity events and it's brilliant fun playing against the actors and musicians. Only myself, Frank and Alexei have played professionally before, but there's some real talent out there.
"I was glad we had Superman to come off the bench, though, as we were 5-1 down and needed help. The guy Gilles from Sex And The City was a good player and lovely guy as well.
"But it makes you realise just how much fitness you have lost and I do miss playing.
"We are still competitive - someone dribbled by me then scored past Anthony and celebrated like it was the World Cup.
"I said to Anthony 'Don't worry, I'm gonna give him a wee whack.' I did and he started complaining but I told him 'If I had wanted to hurt you, you wouldn't be on the pitch.'"
The team's general manager, Northampton-born film maker and producer Ian Carrington, was delighted with the turn-out and success of the day.
Ian said: "It's gone from absolutely nothing when I was first playing 11 years ago.
"The awareness of football in the US has increased and so has our team. So we've created a monster and once you get the faces, especially here in LA, you get attention and it's a successful team as well.
"You couldn't put a price on the celebrities here. We do two or three charity events a year and whatever we can do to help is great.
"Anything is possible with the growth of soccer. We have about 120 players and six teams and it keeps getting bigger."
With several different sides all playing in Sunday league or midweek competitions, not all are made up of superstars.
Frank Butler, 44, from Glasgow, works as a pipe fitter in LA and plays in the Hollywood United over-40s side.
He said: "Some of the famous guys are really good, but they are all just players - nobody treats them any differently."
One of the most regular celebrity faces in the team is actor Jimmy Jean Louis, who plays creepy character The Haitian in Heroes.
The actor, 40, who is actually from Haiti, said: "I love playing football and get a game whenever I can. And to raise money at the same time is just perfect."
The Hollywood United goalkeeper's part is played by Australian actor Anthony LaPaglia, award-winning star of Without a Trace and movies like Summer of Sam and So I Married An Axe Murderer. He said: "I've played football all my life and when I moved from New York to LA to start Without a Trace, I heard about the side and signed up.
"I love getting a game and the club keeps growing so who knows where it might end up - we might talk about bidding for an MLS franchise one day."
Benji Madden, hoping to bring his band Good Charlotte to Scotland next year, said: "I haven't played in ages and it was awesome to play with such great players."
The Champions United side, made up mostly of musicians, romped into a 5-1 lead.
But the game of two halves cliche was in evidence again as Steve Jones and Gilles Marini scored a double each, while Leboeuf also got on the scoresheet and Hollywood completed an incredible fightback to win 6-5.
The HUFC defence was bolstered midway through the first half by the introduction of actor Brandon Routh, best known as the Man of Steel in Superman Returns.
But his introduction led to hysterics on the sidelines as a rival musician moaned: "That's not fair - they're bloody bringing on Superman."
Brandon said: "I did okay, I haven't played a full-size field in ages, but showed some good movement for a big guy.
"One of the English guys was explaining to me the term 'super sub' which I thought was funny and pretty appropriate.
"But I certainly don't think I played like Superman today - that's a lot to live up to."

"..But his introduction led to hysterics on the sidelines as a rival musician moaned: "That's not fair - they're bloody bringing on Superman."
Haha, that's so cool and funny! :woot:
There are more articles on that game:
Quote from this soccer fan blogger Here (http://theoffsiderules.blogspot.com/2008/10/in-pictures-grassroots-soccer-vs.html)
"This is incredible. That's Brandon Routh who played Superman in Superman Returns...in the Superman pose! It's kinda awesome that he was just doing it on his own without prompt. It's like seeing a Parisian bar fight and realizing that's Zidane who just head butted someone."
"Then he flew off to that weird planet with all the ice and crystals and stuff that he lives on and we were all just like "*****, that's crazy". But then we were all like "meh" and watched Youri and Yannick (the French Connection) almost connect on a far post banger. Only in New York." :woot:
You need to click on the link to view the pictures. So Brandon was IN CHARACTER.
Another article:
Probably the biggest cheer of the first half came when Routh, who played high school soccer growing up, swooped in and the ball deflected off his left calf into the goal, leaving a stranded Zohn shaking his head. "Next time try Kryptonite, Ethan," a fan cried. (Routh's autograph was by far the most coveted of all the celebrites, especially by the female fans in attendance. No surprise then that later that night Grassroots auctioned off a "one- to two-hour private party with Superman for up to 10 women." The bidding started at $650.)

In 1987 Superman IV: The Quest for Peace hit theaters. After its failure at the box office, Superman didn’t return to the big screen for almost twenty years. In 2004 Warner Bros finally gave the OK to the script for the film Superman Returns. Warner Bros gave Bryan Singer the director’s chair. The next step was to find someone to play Superman. Singer decided to do what Richard Donner had done when he cast Christopher Reeve, by calling for an unknown. Eventually Singer came across an actor named Brandon Routh.
On June 28, 2006, Superman Returns was released worldwide making more on its opening day than the original. Even though it was mostly accepted many felt that the Man of Steel’s return wasn’t satisfactory. So after the success of the Hulk reboot in 2008, Warner Bros., decided to do the same for Superman by rebooting the series. The current argument is whither or not to keep Brandon Routh as Superman. Well for many reasons I believe that the world needs a Superman like Brandon Routh.
Every year Spike TV holds awards for movies, which are split up into several categories. Just about anybody can go online and vote in each category, so as you can see it’s basically a way for the fans to pick their favorites. In 2006 Pick TV held its yearly awards and one of the categories was best superhero. The nominees where Christian Bale as Batman, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and Brandon Routh as Superman. Through the fan’s votes Brandon Routh won the award. When you think about it, this is a sign that the fans really like Routh and the fact he was picked over the star of Batman Begins says a lot.
Still not convinced Brandon Routh is a good Superman? Well let’s look back in the past. The year is 1964, gene Roddenberry, life long science fiction fan, conjured the idea of Star Trek. The original pilot The Cage had Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike commanding the Enterprise, Leonard Nimoy as second officer Spock and Many other playing the dark and boring Enterprise crew. After previewing The Cage Paramount decided although the concept was interesting they felt Captain Pike wasn’t an interesting lead man and the crew was equally as boring.
Paramount had called for a complete recast which would get rid of the original cast including Nimoy. Roddenberry knew Nimoy had potential. After long discussion Paramount agreed to keep Nimoy as Spock. A total new cast included William Shatner as Captain Kirk, Deforest Kelly as the ship’s doctor McCoy and many more. This new cast brought a flair to the show (especially the friendship triangle between Kirk, Spock and McCoy). As Spock Leonard Nimoy became the most remember able character on both Star Trek and television. Brandon Routh could do the same for Warner Bros if they decide to keep him. I think they should take both Star Treks and Mr. Nimoy’s success into consideration.
If these are not good enough, consider this. Routh’s appearance is very similar to both Superman’s and Christopher Reeve’s. Like I said earlier, Routh had been cast the same way Reeve was one of the best Superman. What about Routh? Routh has what I call “the eye”, which is a characteristic in which a person has a certain thing about them that makes you trust them. Both Reeve and Routh had this sort of air to them. When Routh says “it’s ok I got you,” you believe him. One of the strongest moments in Superman Returns is when he takes Lois up for a flight and tells her, “You wrote, `the world doesn’t need a savior’ but every day I hear people crying for one”. Also Reeve was a great Superman for the 70’s and 80’s and is still inspirational today but the twenty first century is a different era so we need a new Superman for this era and Routh could be that person.
Even if you’re not a fan of Superman it’s unquestionable that he is one of the most influential superheroes of all time. Also the men who portray him are equally important. With a better story and more action, Brandon Routh could be the twenty first century’s Superman. With the world the way it is today it needs a hero to inspire it and the world needs Brandon Routh to be Superman.

What is your touchstone for Superman? Obviously, with Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, when you are reading their books, they’ve got Christopher Reeve in mind. Do you think of Superman from movies, comic books or even “Challenge of the Super Friends?”
My Superman reference point is definitely Christopher Reeve. And I will also take this opportunity to give a shout out to Brandon Routh, who I think really did a fantastic job [in “Superman Returns”]. The movie didn’t always serve him as well as it could have but I think he made a fantastic Superman.

Here are two interesting reviews on the movie, which was shown in several cities and festivals around the country last year,
http://www.kansascity.com/710/story/888777.html
" Muller (the director) has made a sexy movie that’s surprisingly chaste: no real nudity, and the sexual encounters are handled with taste and restraint. He has a knack for revealing character not through declamation but through casual conversations and quiet observation. Apparently he has a good deal of faith in the intelligence of his audience."
In short, this is an impressive first feature.
http://www.fest21.com/en/blog/fortlauderdaleff/film_in_focus_fling
"While the film delivers on its sex scenes and shows off its cast to great advantage (ironically, the hunky men are more on display than the women), the film is no soft-porn trifle. It ultimately does delve into ideas about honesty, jealousy, commitment, maturity and understanding our need and capacity for love."

"The film eventually veers from its free-and-easy atmosphere into a fiercer drama when (spoiler alert!!!) a secret emerges that brings all the characters to a kind of emotional and moral crossroads. Fun and games can rule when there are no consequences, but the game gets more serious once emotional lines are crossed. Suddenly, everyone in the sexual roundelays have to take responsibility for their freewheeling actions and make the important decisions that allow them to "grow up"."
Wow. $29.99. That is expensive for a DVD. That price is sure to come down at some point.

As President Elect Barack Obama lead by example by painting walls at the Sasha Bruce House on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day morning before his Inauguration, several big celebs and civic leaders gathered early at Ballou Senior High School in Washington DC’s Anacostia neighborhood to call for a “New Era Of Service” lead by ServiceNation.
Toby Maguire announced the launch of a ServiceNation Ambassador’s Council that will seek to recruit Hollywood stars to speak out for and enlist folks in national service.
Also on hand to speak were Martin Luther King III, Congressman John Lewis, incoming Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, California First Lady Maria Shriver, Alan Khazei of ServiceNation coalition organization Be The Change, Inc., Congressman George Miller, Congresswoman Doris Matsui, Laysha Ward of the Target Foundation (corporate sponsor of ServiceNation) and Time Magazine Managing Editor Richard Stengel.

Michael Cera to battle Brandon Routh and Chris Evans (in 'Scott Pilgrim')
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g39/doubledown44/routhevanscera_l.jpg
Jan 20, 2009, 11:20 AM | by Mandi Bierly
If Superbad's Michael Cera wants to get the girl in the movie adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, he'll have to defeat Superman Returns' Brandon Routh and Fantastic Four's Chris Evans. I love it already.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Routh and Evans have been cast as two of the seven exes Cera's Canadian slacker/wannabe rocker Scott Pilgrim will have to battle if he's to win the heart of his dream girl (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who played Bruce Willis' daughter in Live Free of Die Hard). Per the trade, "Evans plays evil boyfriend No. 2, Lucas Lee, a pro skateboarder-turned-movie star, while Routh plays the third evil boyfriend, Todd Ingram, a rocker with vegan psychic powers."
Are you diehard Scott Pilgrim fans down with the casting for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, or do you wish Universal would go back to the drawing board? I'm just happy that Cera gets to graduate high school. Scott Pilgrim is 23 when the six-volume Oni Press series begins. (Vol. 5 hits shelves Feb. 4.)

No offense dude but as much as i am a fan of both Routh & Welling prety much equally I'm gonna have to give me two cents. As much as I know Routh has beefed up a bit since SR it's far to hard to tell how big he's gotten under a suit like that. He'd have to be in a plain t shirt like Welling side by side before you could even tell how big he's gotten. Welling has a very big build, almost rediculous really so I dunno if he's quite welling's build yet but he looks good, looks healthy & thing's seem to be going well 4 him. Let's hope that continues.

Yep. After Singer finished filming SR, Routh lost a lot of muscles mass. Compare to the recent pic of him now, he has seem to gain back some of the muscles again. It hard to tell how much he gain with the suit he is wearing. Most suit can hide your body shape well, that sometime you will look skinnier or bigger than you really are.

They should make the suit less tighter & have Brandon not wear the paddings. That the best way to see his muscles easier in the suit.

You know it still weirds me out a little that men seem more obssessed about how much his muscles show under his suit. I know they like visuals though about other men shocks me a little (especially as most of them claim to be straight). It also amuses. :D

Don't agree with that to be honest; As part of the audience, I saw what Routh was doing - I know I wasnt the only one.
Routh's Clark was stronger than his Superman imo. He downplayed the clumsy slapstick of Reeve's Clark and made him more, as you said, unnoticable.
In short, he subtly made him more mild-mannered and less obvious. Which is what Clark is supposed to be surely.

Munroe's Update on Dead of Night
Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor January 26, 2009
Writer-director Kevin Munroe dropped ShockTillYouDrop.com a line to provide us a status report on Dead of Night, a proper adaptation of Tiziano Sclavi's comic book which served as an inspiration for Cemetery Man. Since our last chat in November, Munroe says there have been some developments.
"We're hopefully going to New Orleans next week to begin location scouting," Munroe tells us. "Filming will hopefully begin at the end of March. The crew is coming together right now. The script is pretty much done and we started going out to the cast last week. It was fun to start sending it out to the people we think would be right for the film. Everyone is responding to it really well. It's nice to know you're not the only one in the room who thinks it's a great project."
Leading man Brandon Routh will star as Dylan Dog, but the Superman Returns actor recently committed to Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Will that create any conflicts? Munroe is confident it won't affect his shooting schedule. "I think everyone is aware of each other. I know Eric Gitter who is the producer on that project and it's not even an overlap. Dead of Night will wrap then [Brandon] will go on to Scott Pilgerim so it's totally fine."
For more on Munroe's intentions with the film, visit this story. Keep your eye on Shock, will have more with Munroe on another project he's pulled into the ring very soon!

They should just let brandon do his own hair for the next superman if he does one. This is how they should have parted his hair in SR. .. All you'd have to do is trim it up a bit on the sides and back and add a natural spit curl.. and you've got a good look for routh.

The following is from Investor's Hub.com:
The Platinum Gazette January 2009
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT (Brian Altounian)
This week will mark the close of financing and the formal start of pre-production on our feature film, Dead of Night, based on the Italian comic character, Dylan Dog, a project you have all been following through our press releases and SEC filings. Think of the story as a cross between James Bond and Underworld — Dylan is a private investigator who is reluctantly dragged into a fight between zombies, werewolves and vampires. Like most Hollywood film projects, this film has seen many starts and stops. To expedite the process of closing the financing, Platinum Studios has taken over the production entity responsible for producing the film. In a down economy and with banks and other financiers sitting on the sidelines of Hollywood, we think it says a lot about our tenacity and capability that we will soon be in production on our own film from our own IP library, for which we have secured outside, independent financing. We expect to begin principal photography in New Orleans next month, with an anticipated release of Spring 2010. This is very exciting for us.

Each time I see public appearance shots like this, I think the style he chooses is perfect for Superman. I do hope it's dyed black next time though.

As long as it looks like a stubborn forelock that falls on it's own instead of the affectation it looked like in SR.
Geez - it looked like Clark styled his hair before he hit's the skies as Superman.

On a forum so it could be wrong. They claim Steve Younis said that Brandon might be out (but it's up in the air and rather fuzzy). Not happy if true. But it is a rumour.
