I don't get why no one watches the sport... I mean I only watch the majors but still... its pretty compelling stuff... even the women's side... the William's sister always draw some juice in the media... Sharapova... all those ova's... some of them are pretty hot... but women's tennis is women's tennis... its all about the men's side... and what has hurt the sport the most is that the American players suck d***... A-Rod can't get out of his own way against the top players these days... and Blake is exciting but he is WAY TOO inconsistent... and he can pretty much get blown away by any player in the world on any given match... I love watching Federer, Nadal, and this new kid Djocovic... gonna make for some more epic grand slam finals in the future... I just don't see the fire in Federer though... its just so automatic with him... he does a poor job selling himself... Nadal is too reserved off the court as well but obviously a beast when he is on it... he and Djocovic are the future really... but until we get the big time American player... it is what it is...

If Federer loses Wimbledon, he'll lose the number 1 ranking. It's going to be interesting, but the match he had today appeared to be in true "Federer Form." I really enjoy watching him and Nadal.

Unbelieveble final!!!
Nadal was up 6:4,6:4,3:3 and had 0:40 at Federer's serve but he lost the 3 set in the tie break...in the 4 set it went to a tie-break again and Nadal had 2 match points but Federer amazingly pulled it off again.
Now it's 2:2 in the final set but there is a rain delay at the moment.
If you can,go watch this, unreal battle of will and talent.

Nedal and Federer on their good days are in a different league to all the other men in Tennis. The other players really need to step their game up.
Murray has a good future ahead of him. He just needs to keep developing like he has been when his not injured. A few less drop shoots would help too.
Rod***** game is too much the same. He needs to expand what he can do on the court but I don't think thats possible at his age. His got a big serve but other mens players have overtaken him on court ability.
I liked McEnroe having a dig at Tim Henman when his voice went.

For those interested, but without The Tennis Channel, the 2nd round of the ATP Masters was played today. Nadl & Jokavich both made it through in straight sets. Federer, on the other hand, lost his match, 2 sets to 1, to Gilles Simon, and unseeded Frenchman. This should hurt Roger in the point standings, but probably not enough to drop him out of the number 1 spot. But, we will have to wait and see how Jokavich & Nadal finish to be sure.

I agree, the Wimbledon final has been great for 2 years straight with the Rafa-Roger match ups...But to me, more of my favourite matches have been lower tier people, partially because they have nothing to lose, like Simon.
My favourite player would have to be Andre Agassi...Just wondering if you guys share the same view?
Who do you guys like/your favourite?

The quarterfinals are set for the Cincinnati tounament.
The left side
I. Karlovic v. P. Kohlschreiber (Again worth noting, Karlovic is F***ING 6'10"!!!!! While poor little Kohlschreiber is 5'10".)
with the winner to face the winner of...
C. Moya v. A. Murray
The right side
E. Gulbis v. N. Djokovic
with the winner to face the winner of...
N. Lapentti v. R. Nadal
My picks for the semifinals...
Karlovic v. Moya
&
Nadal v. Djokovic
And for the final....
Moya v. Nada!!! This would put Nadal up against his childhood idol for the world's #1 ranking! Talk about drama!
Nadal vs Djokovic should be a great matchup, althought a bit nervewrecking for me :wow: :hehe:

Karlovic has beat Kohlschreiber and will next face Murray in the quarterfinals. Also, Djokovic has beaten Gulbis and will next face Nadal.

With his win today, he will take over the number one ranking when they update in a couple weeks. If he wins this tournement however, he will take #1 on Monday. That's right folks, Federer's reign as #1 in the world is almost over. It ends either Monday, or in two weeks, but there is nothing poor Roger can do to stop his drop to #2.

Well America isn't going to get into tennis as it did back in the Agassi, Sampras, Conners, Macs, days etc. It doesn't hurt a sport to be popular in one of the biggest sports marketing nations in the world... a lot more so than Britain and the rest of Europe COMBINED... you can downplay that all you want. Those are the facts. I mean as good as the rivalry is now between a couple of pairs of players on both the womens and mens side... that only appeals to Tennis fans... but it doesn't reach outside that box.

The Australian Open begins Monday. Personally I think Murray's gotten better. He's started this year off well and has definitely improved his game. If he keeps it up he might have a good shot at making it to the final.
I also think Nadal will probably make it to the semi's again this year.

130 degrees court temperature. That's obnoxious. Why the hell do they even have a retractable roof if they're not gonna use it with that kinda heat? It's not like they'll ever get to use it for rain. Kudos to Andy for being fit enough but I don't blame Djokovic for that retirement.

Sisters win boys tennis title.
One of this year's AA boys' tennis doubles champions in western Pennsylvania wears pigtails and a skirt.
Her partner is her older sister.
The Timkos – Karli, a senior, and Tanya, a sophomore, both students at Chartiers-Houston High – won the boys AA Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League doubles title on May 1.
The championship was a "repeat" of sorts. The sisters won the girls' AA doubles state championship last year without dropping a set the entire season. When they couldn't find enough players to field a team this year, they had a choice – play no matches until the sectional tournaments and then play singles only, or join the boys team and play all year.
"I wasn't going to leave her hanging," Karli said.
The result? Karli was the top seed on the boys team and went 22-0 on the season. Tanya was the second seed and went 20-2, losing twice to the same opponent. Thanks to their nearly automatic two points, the team went 19-3 on the year.
Once postseason tournaments began, they reunited as doubles partners, winning sectionals and then defeating Tin Chu and Drew Gallatin of Thomas Jefferson High 6-2, 6-1 in the finals of the WPIAL regionals.
Naturally, their victory against the boys has attracted a lot of attention, but the sisters are taking it all in stride.
"It's a big deal, but to us, it's just like, 'This is high school tennis. This is what we're here for,' " Tanya said.
The sisters began playing together about eight years ago, eventually training with an Italian coach, Mario Fratangelo, who pushed them several hours a day. Eventually, they reached top-10 rankings in their age groups in the United States Tennis Association's Middle States region.
The sisters said their reputations preceded them and that their male teammates this year were glad to have them on the team. Their opponents generally were aware of their rankings and didn't seem particularly embarrassed about losing to girls – though it didn't help when Tanya wore bows, pigtails and a skirt on the court.
Tanya Timko
Naturally outgoing and friendly, Karli said she tried to make friends before matches, though she's not sure if she was doing it out of habit or if she was trying to break the tension. Their beaten opponents usually shook their hands like gentlemen.
"Most of them were good sports," Karli said. "We came across a couple of bad apples."
The two players have contrasting styles. While Karli hits a big serve and groundstrokes, Tanya is more of a finesse player with good hands at the net. Both hit two-handed backhands, though Karli said she likes to run around hers. Big Sis wins when they play each other.
They come from an athletic family. Their father, Mike, was a quarterback at West Virginia, while their mother, Shari, was an all-American gymnast at WVU. Shari's sister also was a gymnast – Olympic champion Mary Lou Retton. Meanwhile, a grandfather played minor league baseball in the New York Yankees' system, a cousin was a state champion wrestler and a sister, Jaclyn, plays softball at Robert Morris.
"We had so many big footprints to fill, and we just wanted to make some new ones of our own," Karli said.
Karli will play college tennis for Marshall next year, while Tanya will begin seriously considering her options her junior year. It will be the first time she will play tennis without her sister, but she won't lack for hitting partners and is still weighing what she will do when tennis season rolls around.
"It's kind of out there," Tanya said. "I can either have a season and play on the boys' team or have no season and play just against girls."
The sisters are looking forward to playing in the state tournament, and although they aren't as familiar with their potential opponents, they are confident they will do well.
And the whole "Battle of the Sexes" thing?
"We don't really care," Karli said. "We just go out there and play our games. We're in this for us. We're not doing it for anyone else. … We don't care if they're boys or girls. We just want to win."

While it has the potential to be historic (if he wins,) it does seem a little cheap if he doesn't have to beat the best to win it. Rafa is clearly the best on clay.

But he lost to Soderling. Its not Fedrer´s fault Nadal did not make it to the final.

Somehow a lot of Nadal fans seem to think that if Fed wins the FO this year it will be cheapened by the fact that Nadal is a no show in the final which shouldn't be the case. A grand slam win is a grand slam win regardless of who your opponent is. Federer and Soderling have played better tennis than the rest of the field over the past 2 weeks of the tournament and have earnt their right to be in the finals. Nadal didn't.

Exactly. Nothing should take afew from the fact that if Federer wins he deserves the win no matter who he plays and beats in the final.

I feel bad for Safina. I would've loved for her to win and shove it in Serena's fat face for that whole "the real number 1" BS.

As I have said, the win will be historic, if in fact he does win. The point remains that a Nadal/Federer final with Federer willing would be a better match.
For the record, I enjoy both men's matches.

Lets go Fed!
I want to see history today.
Well congrats to Roger. But i have an empty kinda feeling about it to be honest.

Agreed. He made history, but he didnt beat who might be considered one of the best clay players ever to do it, someone who has stopped him every single year before (and made the fight a hard one). I dont want to take away from Soderling cause he did great in beating Rafa, but come on. He had no chance against Roger. This match was Federer's to lose.

Yeah I agree... he has to beat Nadal at the French one of these years en route to a Championship. Nadal had to beat the Roger at Wimbledon. Federer has yet to beat Nadal at the French. And while Nadal may not catch Federer in majors, if he can string some more Wimbledon Championships and a couple more hard court Championships he will have a strong case to move ahead of Roger on the all-time list.
The way i see it, Rafa might not catch Roger or Pete in majors titles (i dont think he has to to have his place in history), but if at one point he wins the US Open against Federer (which might hapen in the next couple of years), he has a grandslam himself at such a young age and beating the best to win in all surfaces. That would be huge in my opinion.
Very interesting article with the question of the day: Is Roger the best ever? http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/tennis/french09/columns/story?columnist=garber_greg&id=4237016

Nadal won't be able to surpass Roger and Pete in the number of GS wins. A career slam is possible though as he only has to win the USO to complete the collection. He's already proven himself on hardcourt (AO 09) so it's not out of the question. The issue remains that Nadal doesn't have much of a career if he continues to play the physical game that he does which is evident in his current knee problems resulting in his withdrawal from Queens. If he can adjust his game then he will definitely have a shot at matching Federer in terms of on court accomplishments.

in their respective primes, sampras would spank federer on hard and grass courts while federer would probably have the edge on clay.
sampras' serve and volley play isn't common today and no one now does it remotely as well as he did; federer would have trouble and get pressured often. sampras' serve is also one of the best in history; his second serve aces were amazing. it'd be an awesome match to see these guys play, but i think sampras would routinely edge federer on 2/3 surfaces.

Love how it took security at least 10 seconds to get to Federer.

Amazing how stuff like that can still happen in tennis after the whole Monica Seles situation. Makes you wonder about how secure it really is, doesnt it?

BREAKING NEWS!
RAFAEL NADAL WITHDRAWS FROM WIMBLEDON
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/19/rafael-nadal-withdraws-fr_n_218190.html
Defending champion Rafael Nadal withdrew from Wimbledon on Friday because of tendinitis in his knees.
He is the first reigning Wimbledon men's champion to not defend the title since Goran Ivanisevic in 2002 _ and only the second in the last 35 years. The grass-court Grand Slam tournament begins Monday.
"I'm just not 100 percent," the No. 1-ranked Nadal said during a news conference at the All England Club. "I'm better than I was a couple of weeks ago, but I just don't feel ready."
His announcement came about 2 1/2 hours after he lost to Stanislas Wawrinka in an exhibition match on grass at the Hurlingham Club in south London.
"Today was the last test," Nadal said. "I didn't feel terrible but not close to my best."
He also lost an exhibition there Thursday against 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt and, coincidentally, Friday's draw for this year's tournament set those two up for a second-round meeting.
Nadal looked ragged during his straight-set loss against Hewitt on Thursday. But the Spaniard appeared in better condition against Wawrinka, several times racing toward the net for sharp volleys or scurrying along the baseline for winning groundstrokes on the run.
Still, Nadal said he just did not sense that he could win Wimbledon and so he did not want to compete at all.
...looks like another potential chalk mark on Federer's winner's board.
