Damn, that was one hell of a premiere today. All expectations were surpassed and I know Weisman, Cook, and all took their jobs seriously by producing 2 top notch episodes and IMO already one of the better animation shows on today if not THE best cartoon currently on. If all episodes continue to be this good, this will easily top the 90's show...
Anyway, let's discuss March 15th's episode...
Natural Selection
Watch the preview: www.kidswb.com/home
Looks to be a lot darker then then the premiere and judging by the preview we have a serious treat on our hands.
Interview:
Dave Bullock, director of the recently released Justice League: The New Frontier, told The Continuum he has directed four episodes of Kids' WB!'s The Spectacular Spider-Man.
"The first one I directed was the Lizard episode," Bullock said. "I specifically asked for that, knowing it would absolutely be a much moodier, darker type story. Curt Connors is such a great character, so I pushed for that."
The episode, "Natural Selection," will be the series' third.
Bullock directed one episode in each of the first season's four arcs.

I really can't wait for this episode! We saw Connors using that needle on his arm and it was a creepy moment, so what's in store for us on march 16th is something even more creepier and eerie than that. By the looks of the preview, the Lizard and Spdiey fight at night, which, IMO, is the perfect time for the Lizard to be introduced. It just fits the tone of the character so much. I wonder if Billy and Martha will get caught up in the middle of the battle?

Well they certainly set a task before themselves! Usually shows that get better with every episode start off on a "Meh" note and build up. Transformers Animated did this to an extent but seems to be in limbo now.

http://i149.photobucket.com/albums/s79/PJBoySv/Lizard.jpg I think he'll talk. It just seems most likley since theey are staying true to the early days of the comics. I like Macfarlane's Lizard and I lvoed the first storyline in the series "Spider-Man" called Torment. However, the Ditko/Romita/Andry Lizard will always be my favorite.

The preview looks good. Galloway's character models seem to be best for monster type characters like Hellboy, Abe Sapien, and so on, and Lizard looks fine. The episode will have a bit on it's plate to top "Night of the Lizard", the 90's cartoon pilot that actually had BRILLIANT TMS animation. But it looks like it has a somewhat creepy tone and that is what Lizard needs. The 80's cartoons sometimes depicted him as a generic rogue who ordered lizards around but that's not the best way to handle things and most subsequent shows note the "beast" angle of things.
Plus, this time the Lizard has been built up over two prior episodes, so it seems natural.

$10 says that this is the episode where we first see Brock starting to hate Spidey. i bet something will happen with Spidey fighting Lizard, and beating him, and when he reverts back to Connors, Brock will think Spider-man laid the beat down on him and blame him. Kind of played out like the movies how Harry thought spider-man killed his dad cause he saw him with the body, only Connors wont die.

At that site where it describes the Lizard, does it sound like once Dr.Connors transforms into the Lizard, that he is gonna stay as the Lizard permanently?

I've always thought that would be the most "realistic" way to present the Lizard's transformation in a live-action movie, but I doubt that a cartoon version will leave Connors stuck in Lizard-form permanently.

I actually like the idea of Martha being a scientist as well. It makes more sense for Curt to have a wife who supports his experiments.
I'm also glad the writers kept Martha's real name instead of calling her "Margaret" like in the 90's cartoon.

A while back I told everyone Spider-Man's hand was bandaged up in the Lizard episode and no body believed me...I told you there was something around his hand/wrist in the very early Lizard promo!
I can't wait, only one more day! I'm so excited!
I hope thats blood on Spider-Man's cast, it would be so awesome if the Lizard bit his hand and tail whacks Spider-Man so he breaks his wrist.
Although the red dots on the white cast could be just a design the doctors did, I mean kids now a days usually get like strips on their casts, maybe Peter wanted red poka dots?
I'm SO EXCITED!

Lizard did talk in the comics. He talked during fights with Spidey and stuff.
I think he will be able to talk in the beginning, but then he will plummet in a downward spiral of animalistic behavior. :csad:

Like in the comics, Spidey and Martha said he grows less human every minute. However, I think he will talk all the time if he does talk at all.

Okay you guys are right, the red is just part of his costume.
If you watch the Lizard promo when he tail whacks him on the top of the subway car you can clearly see Spider-Man had a self made splint out of webbing for his damaged wrist.

Incredible ending to Natural Selection. Lots of drama and best Spidey action I have ever seen.
TOPS NOTL. All who didn't see it will go "WTF?! How could it top Night of the Lizard?" well, when you watch it you'll know. Trust me. Really guys. The ending was what made it top NOTL.
Everyone think Peter is selfish for ditching them to go take pictures of Lizard but what really happens is that he saved him. He finally wins the money for May but loses all of their trust. Including Eddie's who is pissed at the end of the episode. He has the chance to take away his spider powers finally but decides not to because of the promise he made to Ben.
I didn't think it could top NOTL but it did. Daaaaammmmmn.

I think Peter is going to reveal that he is Spider-Man to Gwen Stacey...I know it doesn't follow the comics but if you think about it he is in a pretty rough spot...I think he wouldn't want their friendship ruined because he has to be so secretive.
Gwen would start getting the wrong impression of Peter like she did today, she thought he left to score money for himself when really he was there to help connors.
I loved it, voted 9 out of 10. Would've voted 10 out of 10, but I still prefer NOTL's characterization of Brock than NS's.

I'd like it if he kept his identity to himself for the rest of the season but if he does reveal it then it'll be interesting. Especially when Capt. Stacy comes around and dies. She won't just blame Spidey but Peter as well. Peter might get worried that she might reveal his identity to the cops or the press.
Not a bad idea.

I think Gwen's going to find out about Aunt May's money problems instead (either Peter tells her or she overhears) that way he earns sympathy and doesn't have to reveal is identity.

This was pretty gosh darned good. So much so that it surprised me. A lot about this really hit on the type of drama Petrt goes through because of his alter ego; abruptly leaving when the Lizard took off, Gwen (later Eddie and Martha) not understanding, getting fired, wanting to quit and ultimately, remembering Uncle Ben and reaffirming his commitment to his responsibility. True Spidey.
Pretty good action with Curt's change sequences and the fights. That 30 minutes went by quickly and I found myself wanting another offering like the double shot we got last week. Big upgrade from my tepid, yet favorable, response from the premiere.

Another good one. "Natural Selection," written by Matt Wayne and directed by Dave Bullock (Justice League: The New Frontier), takes on the Curt Connors/Lizard story, with a subplot of Peter trying to make money from Spidey photos, and adds some novel twists to both.
I like that Peter can't take perfect camera shots yet
And it comes to a head in a rather painful way -- after Connors becomes the Lizard, Peter begs off, saying he has to get home by curfew, only for his friends and colleagues at Connor's lab to discover later that he was out taking pictures of Spidey's battle with the Lizard. So when Pete finally succeeds at getting his Spidey pictures in the Bugle, it's a Pyrrhic victory because it costs him his internship with the Connors and the respect of his friends.
It's probably going to be a factor in turning Eddie Brock against Peter, setup for the Venom arc.
I also like the way the show continues to seed arc elements, with the "gene cleanser" developed to cure Connors offering the possibility of stripping Peter of his spider powers. He doesn't go through with it, but we see him tempted to give up his powers, and he saves the vial for later. I wouldn't be surprised if we're heading for a "Spider-Man No More" story somewhere down the road.
Peter's webbing is known to dissolve after an hour, so wouldn't that webbing he used to stick the "gene cleaner" to the desk dissolve and cause the vial to drop to the ground?
The action is still nice and some funny lines
"hey if you start spinning webs i'm gonna sue!"
:hehe:
Only 10 more episodes
The eyes are growing on me but I wouldn't be surprised if during the course of the series run they modify the animation. Maybe they will add pupils in season 2 or 3
Take a look at early Spiderman TAS episodes with the anime type eyes, particularly in "Night of the Lizard" then compare that to the last season animation. It's like The Batman giving batman a more square jaw
I actually find myself DVR'ing eps and liking them

It's funny I was thinking the same thing, they are definitely going to return to it...but my first thought was not for the hackneyed (by this time) "Spider-Man No More" storyline, but instead the six-arms storyline (which also came about through a formula designed to remove his Spider powers.

Was pretty good and he actually looked more serpentine than reptillian but otherwise was pretty dark and good. I still hate the Peter Parker design, but I am actually getting use to Connors and Gwen's look. Just wish Gwen and Brock weren't nerds.

Perhaps they'll change the art design up a bit in the 2nd or 3rd season, I seem to remember them doing this for some of the characters in Batman:TAS.

Gwen was a nerd in the original also. She was just a hawt nerd. This is High School Gwen, she just hasn't blossomed yet. Or, come a later episode, she'll take off the glasses, get a makeover and she'll look like the comics Gwen.

Wow, you guys really all thought this topped NOTL? I liked it and so far I agree it seems like this show may prove to be the best... but.
Lizard didn't talk
Maybe he will in future episodes but NOTL was not only a great premiere but a great Lizard story as well. So far this show has an A but this episode gets a B. IMO.

I think it did. And Lizard always worked best as a savage monster. He shouldn't speak. I know sometimes he does in the comics, but it always felt weird to me.
This Lizard was trying to eat people. That Lizard wanted to turn all of Manhattan into Lizardmen. A plot like the latter is just not Lizard M.O.
So, yeah. It topped Night of the Lizard.

I like a savage Lizard too but I also like a good split personality twisted idea of good Lizard as well. I was a little sleepy when I watched the episode, I'm waiting to see it on youtube again sometime soon. Also, Lizard talked in the original comic and doesn't this show pride itself on being loyal? Still liked it don't get me wrong.

It's funny I was thinking the same thing, they are definitely going to return to it...but my first thought was not for the hackneyed (by this time) "Spider-Man No More" storyline, but instead the six-arms storyline (which also came about through a formula designed to remove his Spider powers.
Yea I was expecting him to take the serum and grow arms, but then I thought it was too early to do something big like that.

They didn't "decide" to split one long 26 episode season into two 13 episode seasons.
Season one was always thirteen episodes. It was ordered well over a year ago as thirteen episodes. In late August or early September, they got an order for an additional thirteen episodes. The second season.
It takes a long time to make an animated series. There is no way they could have gotten those additional thirteen episodes completed in time to tack on to this season.

Wow. Can't hold a job down for 3 episodes, Parker? Well, let's review, shall we?
sPidey's doing good and on top of the world. Because he foils a bakery robbery that takes place before 10PM. Really, could the crooks have been that smart to begin with? Pete's practically begging to be taken down a notch. Meanwhile, Curt injects himself with some still electrified Lizard Juice and it becomes abundantly clear that this show has more interwoven storylines than LOST.
That night, Curt disPlays the funkiest regeneration scene the characters ever had. I'm more of a fan of slower, more susPenseful transformations but the "Holy Crap!" factor of that arm growing back made up for how unrealistic it was. Over at the Parker house, Peter reassures AILF May that their money problems are over as soon soon as he figures out how to set up a camera and win prize money.
The next day, Flash Thompson, whose obsession leads one to theorize he' secretly gay for Parker, pelts him with water balloons until he's stopped by a taunting Gwen Stacy. Adding insult to injury, fellow jock and all around cool guy (What was his name? Reggie?) asks him if he needs some Aloe Vera for that burn (Double Snap!) and escorts the two Einsteins away much to the subtle embarassment of Sally.
The two ship-worthy nerds head over to Connors lab and are treated to a "Surprise! I Grew My Arm Back Frighteningly And Impossibly Quickly!"-Party. Shortly after, Martha sends Billy to the next room to play video games and orders her husband to remove his clothes but before this goes where we hope it does, it turns out she was just checking for and found lizard scales.
Team Nerd heads into the ultra-scientific part of the lab to figure out a way to cleanse Curt of his affliction and Peter suggests a gene filter similar to a noise filter on a cell phone because the human body and Boost Mobile pretty much work on the same principle. But before you can say "Doctor Connors turned into a giant Lizard!" Doctor Connors turned into a giant Lizard!
Almost as quickly, two hot chicks create a formula that can reverse this unprecedented biological anomoly. Relax kids, it's a cartoon. Pretty girls aren't that smart in real life. ;)
sPidey tracks down Lizzy to a subway station where he's about to eat a Raver Girl, saves her and hurts his hand by touching the third rail. Somewhere out there, Electro's thinking WTF!? Lizzy boards a train, the suicidally brave Eddie follows him while sPidey wonders if it's a good idea or not. Throwing caution to the wind, our hero fights his reptillian foe atop and inside a roomy train in a roomy tunnel before he gets thrown off. Some kick-ass action right there.
sPidey heads back, gets the antidote from the ladies while Eddie Brock calls 'em and reports that Lizard stopped by the zoo. sPidey goes off, so does Martha and unbeknownst to them, so does Billy. I imagine there was a cut scene here where the 8 year old hails a cab alone at and pays the indifferent cab driver with mommy's credit card to take him to the Bronx.
sPidey arrives and the suicidally brave Eddie helps him search the reptile house (how appropriate). Web-head gets his butt kicked underwater, is saved by Brock and then they reason that since he's a giant Lizard, he should slow down if they fight him in the polar bear exhibit. Nevermind that a creature that was that violently active at night time was obviously not ectothermic, they fight him there anyway and Lizzy doesn't slow down at all. In fact the only reason sPidey was able to administer the antidote was because of Billy's skateboard. Yes, the little boy in the cab reached the Bronx Zoo from Manhattan faster than his mom. SusPend your disbelief already.
Alls well that ends--oh wait, I forgot, sPidey FINALLY gets some decent shots of the fight on his camera, wins the Bugle's photo contest and the scorn of everybody at the lab. Except for Curt whose too mopey to care. Martha understands his decision but fires him anyway, apparently forgetting that his faulty cell phone logic allowed them to cure her husband.
Pete swipes an antidote and keeps at home in case he decides to cure himself of the coolest thing ever in the future.

Ok, I just saw this episode [God bless YouTube!].
It was absolutely amazing. The best episode so far. The Lizard was done to perfection. All the essential elements of Connors' life was there and used effectively. Loved the little scene between Peter and Billy in the lab.
How awesome was the fight in the subway?
The Peter Parker luck is still holding strong, with him being humiliated at school by Flash, and being fired from his lab job and made look bad in his friend's eyes. I loved the final scene, where he's about to take the gene cleanser, and then sees the pic of him with Uncle Ben, and realizes why he does what he does, and the good he's accomplished as Spider-Man.
The animation may not have been as good as 'Night of the Lizard' from the 90's show, but it outdid that episode in every other possible way.
10/10. This cartoon rocks my socks :spidey:

This episode was Sensational from start to finish . However IMO (It didn't top "Night Of The Lizard") NOTL is unique and one of the standalone episode of the 90's season 1 SPIDER-MAN :TAS . this episode seemed like a copy cat episode rather than a unique episode . Still I have to say I love the pace of this episode less Peter Parker more wisecracking Spidey .
BTW if Lizzy is the villian in spidey 4 , I hope to see Spidey being as smart ass while battling him, just like in this episode.

When Spider-Man appeared in the lab to help Martha and Gwen, I was expecting him to say that Peter Parker had contacted him, thus explaining why he ran off. Obviously, based on the episode ending, one understands why they didn't do that.
Pretty rotten luck for Spider-Man, now that his friends hate him (although he wasn't get paid, so getting fired theoretically gives him more time to do paid work).

This episode was incredibly fantastic! I feel it was done very well, it had a lot of heart in it. It had a lot of meaning in it, a good man turns into a violent savage beast with nothing but blood lust. I especially found the ending very powerful when everyone is disappointed that Peter did what he did, without knowing the whole "story". As much as I love Night of the Lizard, this blows it out of the water. I think so far, this is the strongest episode so far, I feel that the series gets better and better with each episode!

Just saw it on YouTube. I don't know how ANYONE could think "Night of the Lizard" was better than this. This episode was just so raw on so many levels, and now Pete has a vial that could open up the "Spider-Man No More" arc, which would be interesting to see animated. (I liked in in SM2, but it didn't last very long.)
The Lizard
03-15-2008, 10:44 PM
There were a couple minor things that I didn't like:
1. The Lizard didn't talk. I'm OK with the savage Lizard, but he should have talked a little before he went totally animal and tried to bite heads off.
2. The Lizard was about to bite Billy before Spidey saved him. Again, I realize - savage Lizard, but that's a big deviation from the way Lizzy is presented in the comics.
3. Peter Parker saying "bro" all the time. Pete's not a "bro" kind of guy.
Other than those nitpicks however, it was indeed pretty cool. The Spidey vs Lizard fight is by far the best hand-to-hand Spidey battle EVER animated. It's going to be hard to top, and probably only the eventual Venom battle might beat it. 9/10

Being a Venom fan, I got chills when Eddie snapped on Parker momentarily. I like how, so far, the series foreshadows certain story lines. 1) I rather like it better this way. He's the most animalistic of all sPidey's villains. He shouldn't need to talk, he's a force of primal savagery.
2) I guess any regression might have seemed cheesy. I could have gone with it either way.
3) Only to Brock, though, who is like a brother to him.

I didn't get the chance to see the debut last week, but I had to catch this one and I really loved the show! Great, smooth animation and it has a heart to it as well. Honestly, the 90's cartoon was great but just after seeing this one episode,I think this will be the best yet. I was surprised to see Brock as one of Peter's co-workers but it was a nice change of pace and like others have mentioned, you could see the anger in Brock already. You know what gonna happen...
I was a little shocked by Peter's firing but for me,that goes to show how involved I was with the story story. Oh,and the Lizard was perfect! He was a vicious and savage monster, even almost chowing down on his own son. Just awesome. Spidey was quite the smart ass too. I don't think I've seen him like that in a while.
Shocker's next week!
