View Full Version : Why does Marvel hate Mary Jane so much

I mean I understand that they want Peter to be single but they are pretty much now cutting her out of the Spider-Man history altogether now. I mean are they just trying to make people forget who MJ even is. She should have been in this cartoon series and the only reason why I can see that she isn't is because they want fans to forget about her. Just like why I think they cut her out of the comics as well.

Since when are they cutting her out of Spider-man history? They did in 616, sure, but she'll show up in Spectacular eventually, bet your balls on it. They already introduced almost EVERY main character and villain.

I don't think she will because IMO I think Marvel is trying to erase almost every romantic link between the two and just make fans forget they were even together. Thats why I am shocked that Spider-Girl is still going on and that they are together in the Ultimate series.

Look, Mary Jane was not in the comics from the begining. They are just waiting a few episodes and will probably do a "face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot" moment.

I think you just need to hold on and stay tuned. Remember, there have only been TWO episodes so far. And judging by the character line up that was released a while back, Mary Jane is in the series, her model was there. She probably just won't show up for a little while. After all, in the Lee/Ditko/Romita era Gwen was around before Mary Jane and was introduced for the purpose of being the other woman to Gwen. Some other writer besides Lee changed things around from that original intension. Anyway, Wiseman has said he is getting inspiration from those Lee/Ditko/Romita story lines. Also, we do see Anna Watson, MJ's aunt, in the series opener.
Its just a matter time.

Shes just not gonna show up until later on in the season. Yea if you had been following the development of the show you would have known that. Instead your jumping to wild conclusions after only seeing two episodes.

Sigh, what's with all the people who are saying she won't be in this series?
She will be, just not right away, but she'll show up in a few more episodes.
Hell, she didn't show up in the comic books until well past #40. Despite how the movies handled things, she and Peter did not know each other when they were six years old.
Someone beat me to the character model, but she is being voiced by Vanessa Marshall.
So, please don't jump to wild conclusions, you're really making yourself look foolish.

Yeah, they are pacing this similar to the original Lee/Ditko Spidey comics in which MJ doesn't appear right away. I'm glad they didn't go with the Ultimate and Movie versions of MJ who's right there with Peter from the start.

^ If the pacing is similar, then logic would dictate they might... emphasis on the word "might"... be considering killing off Gwen Stacy later down the line. And if they do, I pray to god it's not done in some super-lame way... i.e. falling into a dimensional portal.

We've seen the model sheet, so we know MJ is in it. I'm just hoping they do it right, like the comics. Aunt May and Anna trying to set-up a blind date between Pete & MJ with Pete successfully dodging each encounter. He thinks she has to be scary to need a blind date. He might start up the relationship with Gwen in the meantime. Then we can have cameos of MJ where we can't see her face (just like in the comics!). Then, after a number of episodes with this tease, finally have Pete give in to meet. Then he opens the door and we get the famous "Face it, Tiger. You just hit the jackpot!"
It would also be cool if they went through the whole Gwen Stacy killed by the Green Goblin, if we could have the classic MJ stays to console Pete scene like the comics. (I also like Pete & MJ first big kiss at the airport, for anyone who also remembers this from the comics).

If they do make that scene, Vanessa Marshall is going to have to do so many takes, because if I'm not mistaken, that exact scene has never been heard before, and they're gonna make sure it's done right.

Actually, the "Face it, Tiger, you just hit the jackpot," was in the 90's series. But, yeah, the delivery needs to be perfect.
I hope we get the party girl MJ who develops into a serious relationship like in the comics.

since ana watson is already in the series...she might suggest peter to date her but of course peter thinks mj is ugly or geek.
i think mj would be exact opposite of gwen...fun party girl, guys has a crush on her but get jealous with peter for being close with mj.

No. Peter should be open to options. It makes for more interesting story telling and it reitterates what was done in the comics. Seeing peter pine after one girl imo is lame and boring and doesn't leave room for growth. Should he end up with one of these girls, that'll be great but until he actually enters an exclusive elationship, Pete should try and get what he can.

I read somewhere, that Black cat came around before Catwoman became the way she is nowadays. Before she like wore that purple dress costume and other things. True, when Black cat was first introduced the only similarites were that she was a theif and a cat themed character.
Felicia Hardy's signature costume, cat burglar profession, and her steady relationship to Spider-Man predate Selina Kyle's similar depiction in comics by almost a decade. Catwoman spent most of her comic life as a purple-dressed female super villain who used big cats to commit anything but subtle crimes. Selina Kyle's current comic book incarnation as a black suited cat burglar with romantic ties to Batman didn't occur until 1987 with Frank Miller's classic Batman: Year One, although Batman did show a romantic interest in her during her first appearance in Batman #1 before she wore a costume and was known simply as "The Cat". Catwoman's depiction in 1966 on the Batman television series was the first time outside the comics that we saw Selina Kyle as a black catsuit-clad cat burglar seductress. Yea I know its Wiki blah blah, but it referances certain issues and stories and a BOF article.

I'm pretty sure that's where they're going with this as well. I can totally picture the scene where Peter arrives with MJ and Flash and the gang is all "SHE'S Puny Parker's date!" Then, just as things start going well with Peter and MJ, he's got to leave her to stop a villain (probably Rhino would be my guess) thus opening it up for Harry to move in and impress her, having taking his father's advice way too much to heart from this week's episode. Thus we have our Peter/Gwen and MJ/Harry pairing like the classic Stan Lee comics...before Harry's newfound confidence leads to self-destructive behavior to the point that MJ, feeling Harry wasn't the guy she thought he was, to break up with him.

Are you guys happy now? She was in today's episode(Invisible Hand).
in a word... "no" :woot:
Too soon, and not enough devlopment of Gwen's and Peter's relationship for me. But, this appears to be following the Ultimate Timeline moreso (with some 616 thrown in)... so oh well.

MJ's appearance could cause some more development in Peter"s and Gwen's relationship. How exactly is it following the Ultimate timeline more?

yea it isnt following ultimate at all. Ultimate had peter and mj friends and then dating before gwen showed up. Where as here peter and gwen are friends and she likes him but peter is to stupid to notice her in that way.

Mary Jane was introduced in USM much earlier. Regardless, Mary Jane's introduction will be key in Gwen's characterization.

They're just condensing story lines of 616 Spider-man. That's what makes it seem so different. This is definitely 616 timeline, with a little Ultimate thrown in.

Well I don't know if Marvel has hate for MJ but many writers feel her being married to Peter limits the stories. And if the first 9 issues of Brand New Day are any indication they only thing MJ is "limiting" them to is from telling the same old stories from the '60s-'70s.
Anyway, I LOVE MJ and cannot wait to see the next new episodes. 2 weeks. Ugh.

Should this subject really be in this thread? Seems like this thread was started by someone who didn't know Peter Parker had other Girlfriends before MJ. You know... movie fans.

I just call them ignorant. I'm glad that the movies made new fans, but I hate when they make accusations like, "Marvel Hates MJ" Joey Q and certain writers may hate MJ, but Marvel doesn't hate her cause many people within the company still love her. MJ issues are why I stopped reading The spidey comics thread.

Look, Mary Jane was not in the comics from the begining. They are just waiting a few episodes and will probably do a "face it tiger, you just hit the jackpot" moment.
Lol you were so right.

i hope they don't go the movie/spider-man loves MJ route and make Mary Jane fall in love with Spider-man before Peter. Thats Supermans shtick not Spideys

Well to be fair to Raimi she only had a thing for Spidey for about 30 minutes in the movie before it became about Peter Parker for the rest of the three films.
Anyway, they introduced her and here is hoping they keep her a wild spirit. I will say I like her outfit concept better than the 90s cartoon but like every non-Peter character the facial design leaves something to be desired (as does the voice, IMHO), but she had the classic intro. They've now introduced MJ, Gwen, Betty and arguably Liz. All that's missing is Felicia and I have a feeling she'll show up in season 2 or 3.

yah i thought her delivery on that line was pretty poor, although most like it. i'm sure she'l be fine for the rest of the show, its just i didn't like the line delivery there. Also wasn't a fan of her outfit in this, the dance dress, it, i guess i would have preffered the classic clothes. the dress just looked a little too much, maybe it was the arm coverings

apparently she shows up this season

I think it's nice she's appearing during the symbiote arc, since she had a thing for Spidey's black suit in the comics.

Yeah, I also think that's cool. Girl LOVED Spidey in black. I can't wait to hear the VA do her voice as she is smoking HOT!! :wow:
