Sun Media (http://jam.canoe.ca/Movies/Artists/S/Smith_Will/2008/03/23/5078376-sun.html) talked to screenwriter Chris Hauty (Never Back Down), who is polishing a script by Carl Franklin (Devil in a Blue Dress) called The Last Pharaoh, which is at Will Smith's Overbrook Entertaiment production company.

The film centers on Taharqa, who was king of Egypt (from 690 BC to 664 BC) and a member of the Nubian or 25th dynasty of Egypt. He was the son of Piye, the Nubian king of Napata who had first conquered Egypt, and the younger brother and successor of Shebitku. The story is about Ethiopians battling Assyrians for the throne of Amun-Ra.

"It's an open writing assignment from Will's company. It's something he's taken a big interest in," Hauty said.

The actual "last Pharaoh" was Cleopatra VII, of course.

Chigaimasu. As mentioned in 2006 France's "OSS-117: Cairo, Nest of Spies", the title of 'pharaoh' had stopped being used long before Cleopatra 7th's reign. Instead they used the titles of 'king' or 'queen'. Cleopatra never held the title of 'pharaoh', unlike Hatshepsut.

That Nubian dynasty has been credited for revitalising what Piye had believed was declining Egyptian culture. It was covered in a recent issue of National Geographic.

i'd like to see smith stretch his acting legs and try something out of left field like this.

at least it'd be a role that doesn't afford him the opportunity to say "aw, hell naw!"

I can already see egyptian community boycotting the movie and a lot of controversy. WHo cares?

Will Smith is the king.

I won't mind even if he becomes the next superman or batman.

Will Smith could play a rock and the movie would still make a gazillion bucks.

It's certainly something Will hasn't tried....I would like for him to branch out and try something like this....it could be a pretty interesting project. Is Carl Franklin directing as well? I loved Devil in a Blue Dress and Out of Time

at the moment there is no director but i'd be happy enough with Franklin on the job, I love olden day Egypt as a setting in movies and this sounds like something really fresh for Will to try his hand at.

This seems great if it ends up going through. I'd watch a movie about paint drying if Will Smith was in it.

Randall Wallace to Pen The Last Pharaoh

Source: Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117991803.html?categoryid=13&cs=1)
September 8, 2008

Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace will write The Last Pharoah, a Columbia Pictures drama crafted as a vehicle for Will Smith to play Taharqa, the pharaoh who battled Assyrian invaders in ancient Egypt.

Smith, James Lassiter and Ken Stovitz will produce for Overbrook Entertainment.

Variety says Smith, who has long wanted to play the pharaoh, brought Wallace the Taharqa story.

The film will focus on his battles with Assyrian leader Esarhaddon starting in 677 B.C.

He didn't say aww hell naw in quite a few movies. It's funny and cute but people are starting to overstate how many times he said that line.
