Aw, I want one now too. I wonder how I can get one without resorting to Ebay. I went to the NYC premiere of the first few minutes of the film and I have signed up for the various viral sites online. Darn, maybe the postage is too much for Gotham City to New York City.

Harvey Dent Joins Race For Gotham DA
Assistant District Attorney Harvey Dent, taking advantage of political momentum after his initial prosecutions of corrupt GPD officials, announced his candidacy for Gotham DA at the infamous Krol Projects in crime-ridden East End.
"I say to Gotham today, we can make our city safe for families once again," Dent proclaimed on a cold, crisp day outside the most dangerous public housing project in the city, "With your help, I will fight with every available means against the alliance of corrupt cops and organized crime that has brought this city to its knees," he continued. Dent named reported mob leader Sal Maroni as one of his chief targets if he is elected.
Dent's entry into the race has been called "the worst kept secret in Gotham" and was widely expected.
The Assistant DA's call for a show of support from Gotham citizens before he declared his candidacy succeeded in recent weeks, with signs, posters, and spontaneous events revealing strength for Dent in almost every neighborhood of the city.
The race for District Attorney now is set up as perhaps the most emotional campaign in recent Gotham history, observers said. Relations between Dent and the sitting District Attorney, Roger Garcetti, have been fraying almost since the moment Dent joined the District Attorney's office.
"Garcetti and Dent have been at each other's throats since dat one," said one high-level official in City Hall. "Garcetti looks at Dent as a media-mad upstart, and Dent sees Garcetti as part of the old guard which has led Gotham into a tailspin of crime and corruption."
In the stark surroundings of the grim, concrete projects, Dent gave a classic stemwinder in the best Gotham tradition. he spoke without notes for over an hour, detailing his love of Gotham, describing the city's perilous situation today, and boasting of his ability to put and end to the city's "unholy alliance" of mob bosses and political officials. He returned, again and again, to the "network of crime, corruption, incompetence, and cowardice" which he claimed was devastating the city.
"The same people who are supposed to protect us are instead betraying us. Every cop that turns the other way for a little extra cash is betraying us. Every official more concerned with his own political future than the public safety is betraying us. And every district attorney too weak or too scared to really take on organized crime is betraying us," Dent said in a heated speech which was interrupted by applause 19 times.
District Attorney Roger Garcetti's election team was quick to fight back against Dent's portrait of their campaign as "too weak or too scared." Garcetti's campaign manager Jamison Starns called Dent's attack "an admission that Dent has no positive plans for Gotham. Dent is an angry man on a witch hunt to take down good cops to feed his lust for power," said Starns.
In his short time as Assistant District Attorney in Gotham, Dent has made a name for himself by investigating and charging Gotham police officers working in conjunction with GPD's Internal Affairs department.
but his latest investigation of corrupt cops went awry when a shootout during an attempted arrest left one cop dead, GPD officer Karl Breitup. Two citizens were also injured in the melee at Betty's House of Pies. Dent was promptly attacked by his political opponents after the "Pie-Die Incident" as it became known. "Dent was responsible for that man's death the moment he decided to put lives at risk for a good video clip on the evening news," District Attorney Garcetti said at the time.
According to the polls, Dent is a controversial figure who gets strong marks for the ability to "get things done" even as equal numbers of Gotham voters wonder if Dent may be "dishonest or has something to hide."
Those negative feelings may ironically be the result of his past successes, which created enormous amounts of ill-will within the Gotham establishment.
Even at the peak of his success, Dent was often the target of backstage criticism by fellow prosecutors. Their most common criticism was that Dent was an overly zealous Torquemada who hungered for newspaper headlines. Dent can expect much more criticism as the campaign goes on, observers told The Times
"Dent is going to take some serious dents before this one is over," said Gotham political consultant Walt DeFabrizo. "A lot of people are gunning for him."
Dent's announcement turns the campaign for DA into an official three-way race. District Attorney Roger Garcetti announced his candidacy two weeks ago. Victim Advocate foundation President Dana Worthington is also running for the spot.

Garcetti Vows "Cleanest Campaign in Gotham History"
Acting District Attorney Roger Garcetti vowed to run "the cleanest campaign in Gotham history" today at a press conference in City Hall.
The candidate used the opportunity to chastise main rival Harvey Dent for running a "vicious smear campaign" that attempted to "cast suspicions on my integrity."
"One of my opponents has consistently spread rumors to the press questioning my integrity," Garcetti said, genteelly refusing to mention Dent by name. "These types of dirty tricks are not good for Gotham. I implore all my opponents to follow my example and run a clean campaign focused on the issues."
Garcetti challenged his main opponents Harvey Dent and Dana Worthington to sign a "clean campaign pledge" that would prohibit campaigns from sending out negative direct mail pieces, smear e-mails, and relying on "destructive personal attacks" during the race.
Gotham politics have always been rough-and-tumble, but in recent years the attacks between candidates have become more and more vicious. Emails rumored to reveal an adulterous affair found on a hard drive belonging to candidate for Mayor Allan Fieldworthy derailed his campaign four years ago.
And last year, City Councilman Sidney Vallencio lost his campaign for re-election when opponents presented what they called "Sid's longtime drug dealer" to the public.
Garcetti said he had faxed and mailed his "clean campaign pledge" to both Dent and Worthington and was "awaiting their response."
"I have a long history of service, and that is what I'm running on," said Garcetti. "Negative attacks have to stop, but that's all I hear from my opponents."
Initial reaction from Gotham's political watchdogs was positive to Garcetti's pledge. The Lady Voters of Gotham issued a press release endorsing Garcetti's clean campaign challenge, and asked all candidates to refrain from personal attacks. Gotham's good Government Alliance also supported Garcetti's initiative.
Garcetti's advisors privately speak of their fears that Dent will run a "dirty campaign" that attempts to link the Acting District Attorney with corruption and organized crime.
"We hear insinuations over and over again from the Dent camp that somehow Garcetti is connected with the corruption Dent is claiming to root out," said Garcetti's media strategist Maureen Madgey. "It's the most vicious smear imaginable."
Dent spokesmen said that they were studying the pledge. Worthington representatives were not available for comment.

SHUT DOWN ARKHAM ASYLUM
After the latest Arkham Asylum mishap -- where 9 inmates simply walked out of the compound in guard uniforms and killed four citizens in their first 24 hours free -- it's time to rething Gotham's strategy for housing the criminally insane.
And the first step in that rethink must be to close the notoriously incompetent, brutal and corrupt Arkham Asylum. Indeed, with the kind of history Arkham has, one would have to be criminally insane to believe this infamous Gotham institution will ever reform itself.
Arkham Asylum was founded in a different time in Gotham, when people believed that even the worst criminal could be rehabilitated. Today, it is obvious that all the care, education, and attention in the world cannot make all hardcore convicts into law abiding citizens.
The progressive idea of rehabilitating all convicts was an attractive idea, and a welcome response to the abysmal treatment of criminals in bygone eras. Every compassionate person wanted to believe that no human being was beyond redemption, and it was in this heady, idealistic atmosphere that Arkham Asylum was created.
But several things went awry, fairly quickly. First of all, the idea that all criminals could be rehabilitated has simply proven false. In state after state, the results of this progressive and merciful view of criminal justice simply failed to take into account the inexorable impulse to commit crime innate in many hard-core felons.
Criminals who were declared completely "cured" and sent back into the streets wreaked devastating havoc upon citizens. Indeed, who can forget the very first Arkham "success story" who was offered to us at a self-congratulatory press conference as the first "completely cured" Arkham inmate? Seven people lost their lives at the hands of the "rehabilitated" Street Watkings and his sewing needles.
Now, with over a hundred inmates of Arkham missing and "presumed dead" after the Narrows disaster, Gotham is once again at the mercy of Arkham Asylum's incompetence. And this comes after the revelations that Arkham's own director, Dr. Jonathan Crane, was the mastermind of the Fear Toxin plot.
So Gotham now must fear both Arkham's inmates and its staff, apparently. The inmates may be criminally insane, but the staff is certainly criminally incompetent, or worse. Arkham must be shut down, and Gotham must start a new page in its handling of the criminally insane.
THE QUESTION OF HARVEY DENT
With the entry of Harvey Dent into the campaign for District Attorney, Gotham is now faced with a tantalizing prospect -- that of a legal apparatus tenacious enough to take on the crime and corruption facing the city.
Yet to be determined is whether Dent's crusade against police corruption is the act of a man genuinely committed to ridding the city of mob influence or simply a political circus designed to further his own political ends.
Certainly Gotham needs a public official with the backbone to attack organized crime's tentacles and the competence to win convictions. Too many attempts to take on the mob in Gotham have fallen victim to turf battles, dead witnesses, and mysterious last minute decisions to drop cases.
Dent's crusade against police corruption has scored impressive victories -- but also raises questions. His single-minded pursuit of Sergeant Daniel Selverian for taking bribes dominated Gotham politics during the month of August. But the jury ended up acquitting Mr. Selverian, and the Judge attacked Dent of "prosecutorial overreaching."
This lost case does not overshadow the many other cases Dent has won. Police corruption is an important issue. But by concentrating so much on police corruption, Dent opens himself up to charges that his is targeting the most politically explosive area instead of the area that could most easily translate into safer Gotham streets. Where are the prosecutions of mobsters? Why is he afraid to go after them?
It is simply too early to determine Dent's true face. The Gotham Times will continue to watch this public official closely, and continue to hope, along with all of Gotham, that Dent is the real thing.
ARREST BATMAN - JUST NOT YET
The Gotham Times stands squarely for both public safety and for the equitable enforcement of laws. But the rise of Batman has put those two principle in conflict -- with Batman's vigilantism is arguable against the law, it also has helped fight back the crime wave battering Gotham streets.
The arguments are by now familiar, having been aired in the 24-hour news channels, the family dinner tables, the barbershops and wherever Gothamites gather. One since claims that Batman is a simple vigilante, taking the law into his own hands, and that by allowing him to continue walking the streets (or sometimes the skies) Gotham is opening up a future where ordinary citizens, private militias, and mercenaries will terrorize Gotham as anarchy begins to eat away at the city. Batman, this argument concludes, must be arrested immediately.
The pro-Batman argument claims that Batman is simply doing his duty as a good citizen of Gotham to aid the victims of crime. Just as a Good Samaritan on Gotham streets may run after a purse snatcher, Batman pursues criminals when he finds them breaking the law.
The Gotham Times sympathizes with both arguments. Anybody who has experience the brutality of a violent crime knows the feeling of helplessness and rage that can occur. Crime victims need protectors, and Batman, for now, is that protector. During this crime wave - and the bloody mob war Gotham citizens need all the help they can get in staying safe. And whether addled by corruption or incompetence the Gotham Police Department simply isn't doing its job to "protect, defend, and serve."
But in the end, modern civilization depends on its laws. These laws must apply to all citizens, not just the ones that don't wear bat costumes. We cannot allow private citizens to enforce the law in city streets. Gotham is not the Wild West, and Batman is not the newly elected sheriff in town.
So Batman must be arrested. His many escapades have save lives -- but they have also destroyed property, broke laws, added to a sense of public anarchy, and left criminal suspects bloodied, injured, and possibly abused. As the Gotham Civil Liberties Union has noted, Batman also violates the rights of those he suspects of criminal behavior. Due process and the right to a fair trial means little in an atmosphere of vigilantism.
It is simply unacceptable that in a proud city like Gotham, the city must outsource crime-fighting to an acrobat with a costume and a few tricks.
Gotham needs to return to being a city of laws, once again. Batman may be acting outside of the law, but he is helping us fight back crime and return to a state of law and order a little faster. We must be cautious, however, in offering the caped crime fighter complete license to act.

Mystery Deepens as Family Found Dead at Carnival
The wife and children of Jake Karnassian, the Manager of Buildings and Grounds for the Gotham Unified School District, were found dead at Gotham Carnivalland near Gotham Pier yesterday.
Karnassians wife, Jill, 45, was found bound and gagged, hanging from one of the internal gears in the Ferris wheel. Mechanics discovered the body when they were making routine fixes. The bodies of Jenna, 12, and James, 10, were discovered inside two bumper cars. Karnassian went missing more than a month ago and at the time Gotham Police suggested he may have run off with a mistress.
The discovery of his family dead may alter the trajectory of the investigation.

...............
Group Claims "Foul Play" Behind Elephant Deaths
After a series of elephant deaths at the Gotham Zoo, one pro-animal group is charging that the deaths may be the result of a "malicious conspiracy." Gilard Braverman of the Elephants Defense League claims that his group has amassed evidence revealing a "secret league of pachyderm haters" that have "conspired to destroy the lives of our big-eared friends."
Braverman claims that the conspiracy reaches into the highest level of the zoo and that recent deaths of Vishnu the Elephant, Smoke the Elephant, and Sam the Elephant were "no accident."
Braverman demanded that Vishnu the elephant be disinterred so as to give him a "proper autopsy." Unfortunately, Sam the elephant was cremated and the 59 pounds of ashes that remained were sprinkled over Gotham Harbor in a public event which featured a children's choir and speeches from animal lovers around the nation.
The Gotham Zoo released a statement saying that they were grieving for the elephants too. Zoo head Margo Learner was quoted as saying that Braverman and other members of his Elephants Defense League were "mentally unstable" and the charges "absolutely ludicrous." She also said that Vishnu the Elephant was a "rare soul" who had taught her much about love and family during her years at the zoo.

Thanks, I never got into the comics, just TAS, the movies, and Year One (the only comic ive read, got it just before Begins)

Yeah.. Batman Forever used Nygma, but his real name is Nashton..
Mayyyyybe it's just a coincidence...

Edward Nashton???
A quick google says its the Riddler...but I thought he was Edward Nygma
In some stories Ed Nashton changed his name to Nygma. To give him the E. Nygma thing.
I'd rather his name just be Nygma from the start, but I'd be fine with this.

I say let's revisit the Anthony Michael Hall character.. I think we've gotten terribly thrown off.. Edward Nashton gets claims he can figure out who Batman is.. Joker tries to motivate him.. He gets madly obsessed with finding out who he is..

I just got to say,
I read the "letters to the editor" section and the one that ended with the lyrics from R. Kelly's "Gotham City" song made me come damn close to pissing my pants from laughter.

i'll bet it's setting up a minor character with a little bit of development that can become a main character down the road or in the third one.. and all of us will be able to say we remember when they first mentioned him in a newspaper..
point is- it isn't there for no reason.

I'm thinking that both the letter from Edward Nashton and the reference to the Iceberg Lounge are just cool little Easter Eggs for us fans. Though I guess it does leave an opening should they want to use Riddler or Penguin in part 3. But I wouldn't expect to see either in "The Dark Knight".
But I've been wrong before...
Nightwatcher11
03-26-2008, 03:15 PM
who says Two-Face will be around in the third one? We have yet to see any proof Two-Face lives on in TDK.
Armored Avenger
03-26-2008, 03:15 PM
The new Gotham Times also contains some references to The Penguin. I dont think these references should be taken too seriously - i think they are just easter eggs for the fans to discover.
TheBatman072
03-26-2008, 03:16 PM
I'm betting they're planting seeds for the next movie. Riddler or Penguin aren't as big as Two-Face or Joker, so minor characters would be great. Headaches for Batman instead of thorns in the side(Joker and Two-Face).
I'd love to see a racketeering Penguin running the Iceberg Lounge, and a disgruntled ex-Wayne Industries employee Edward Nashton, now known as Edward Nygma, become a nuisance for Batman in part three.

OMG, good eye. That is hilarious.
And i know this has already been discussed - but you know these guys in marketing are having fun with toying with us the ideas of other villains -
Adopt a pet(owned by the Wayne Foundation) = Catwoman?
Iceburg Lounge = Penguin = LOVE THAT NOD.
The bees thing I have no idea. Random news section I guess? Same with the fish thing? Idk.
Also - Nice to see the school board head was kidnapped and killed. That explains how Joker got his hands on a school bus.

I always thought the Riddler would work as a hacker. He could crack into wayne inc's computers and cause problems for Gotham and leave a trail of riddles at the end of his crimes... IDK.

I just think Riddler should be a minor "freak" villian that speaks in riddles and is hired by the mob to find out who batman is.. but never too over the top or important..

If there is any confusion left. You did not have to participate in the Joker viral in order to receive thi new edition of the Gotham Times. My package came today and I did not participate in the first viral, just the IBIHD.
Sorry if this was made clear 10 pages back, but I didn't see it.

Not to pooh pooh people's hopes a the virals providing clues to the plot (which I'm sure they do) some of these things are just neat things to flesh out the ARG :]

Yes, but it's the excitment of the virals returning with full force. We must now overanalyze everything.
