Sacha Baron Cohen to play another Ali G alter ego
Article from: Agence France-Presse
September 10, 2007 11:00pm
SACHA Baron Cohen has secretly begun filming his new big screen spoof based on an outrageous Ali G character named Bruno.
The British funnyman is following-up his monster hit Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan with a feature film based on another of his politically-incorrect alter egos.
Cohen will play gay fashion reporter Bruno, one of the outrageous identities he introduced in his Ali G television series.
Production on the movie, which Cohen sold to Universal for a reported $50 million, is believed to have begun several weeks ago under a veil of secrecy.
There have been reported sightings of Cohen - in costume as the flamboyant Austrian television personality - attending low-key events around Los Angeles, accompanied by a small film crew.
Secrecy was paramount in the creation of Borat, with Cohen successfully hoodwinking people into believing he was a reporter from Kazakhstan who was visiting the US to do a serious report about American culture.
The film went on to top global box office takings and prompted several of the people unwittingly involved in the comedy hit to threaten Cohen with legal action.
As Cohen's profile has risen in the US following the success of Borat, it has become increasingly difficult for the 1.91cm-tall star to keep his identity secret as he films his new spoof.
Sources close to the production told News Limited that filming on the movie will take Cohen away from Los Angeles over the next few weeks, right as his fiancee - Australian actress Isla Fisher - is in the final stages of her pregnancy.
Friends of the couple told News Limited that they were planning to have the baby in LA, rather than return to his native London where they have a home in the exclusive suburb of Hampstead.
Fisher, 31, is due to give birth to the couple's first child in about five weeks and Cohen will take a break from filming to be by her side.
The former Home & Away starlet, who shares a lavish pad in the Hollywood Hills with the funnyman, recently told News Limited she had no plans to rush back to her movie career following the baby's arrival. "I don't want to put the pressure on myself to have to race back to something," Fisher said.
"So I'm just taking it easy and seeing how I feel."
Universal Pictures bought the rights to Bruno for a reported $55 million, with Cohen set to pocket a salary of about $16 million and 15 percent of the film's profits.
During Cohen's original television portrayal of Bruno, he duped everyday people and entertainment industry names to say ridiculous and often contradictory things.
Among the high-profile names to be successfully fooled by Cohen and featured on the series were supermodels Gisele Bundchen and Sophie Dahl, fashion designer Carolina Herrera and Hollywood hairdresser-to-the-stars Jonathan Antin.
To play Borat, Cohen spent six weeks growing body hair and a thick moustache while to become Bruno he has his hair shaved into a mohawk and his whole body waxed.
Bruno is being directed by English writer-producer Dan Mazer, who has collaborated with Cohen since he made his British television debut in 1998 on The 11 O'Clock Show as the spoof rapper Ali G.
The film is being produced by Hollywood veteran Jay Roach, who produced Borat and directed the three Austin Powers movies, Meet The Parents and Meet The Fokkers.
Cohen has also signed on to then star in Dinner for Schmucks, an English language remake of the French comedy Le Diner de Cons to be directed by Roach.

Cohen's Bruno Causes Trouble in Kansas
Source: TheBadandUgly.com
March 29, 2008
TheBadandUgly.com reports that "Borat" star Sacha Baron Cohen has been filming his next pic, "Bruno" (possible full title " Brüno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt"), in Kansas and has already caused problems at the Wichita Mid-Continent Airport. You can read what happened here!
In related news, /Film (which has a short video of the above) says a church in Kansas reported that a strange European camera crew showed up to their Easter play with the on air personality in chains. Ben Affleck was also reportedly fooled into believing he was being interviewed by a "very famous openly gay fashion journalist." More on this here (http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/03/28/sacha-baron-cohen-is-fking-with-ben-affleck/)!
Directed again by Dan Mazer ("Borat"), the comedy will be released by Universal Pictures.
The video is at the bottom of the link
Sounds like he got Affleck, hopefully that church was The Westboro Baptist:cmad:

Bruno Gets an Epic Summer Blockbuster Release Date

bruno release date
Universal has finally set a date for Sacha Baron Cohen’s follow-up to Borat. Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt will hit theaters on May 15th 2009, a date which has become synonymous with the beginning of the Summer movie season. That week has been the home of the Shrek trilogy, all three Star Wars prequels, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Da Vinci Code. Point is, Universal must have a lot of faith in the movie to put it in this very important calendar spot. In 2009, Bruno is set to go head to head with Ron Howard’s adaptation of Angels & Demons.
Not much has been released reguarding the new film, but we know that Bruno has interviewed Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ben Affleck, and was caught stripping down to tight shorts in the lobby of Wichita Kansas Airport.

COMIC Sacha Baron Cohen tricked an Israeli spy and a Palestinian academic in an outrageous new prank.
Cohen, 36, referred to militant Arab group Hamas as “hummus”.
And he said the Middle East conflict wasn’t nearly as bad as Hollywood superstars Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston fighting over Brad Pitt.
Cohen – famous for hilarious characters Ali G and Borat – was disguised as Bruno, a gay Austrian fashion presenter.
He told Yossi Alpher – a former top spy with Israeli secret service Mossad – and Palestinian academic Ghassam Khalib they were filming a youth documentary.
Cohen – dressed in black leather and studs – barked out daft questions in a loud Austrian accent.
The comedian ridiculed militant group Hamas, saying: “What’s the connection between a political movement and food. Why hummus?” One of the guests politely explained: “Hamas is a Palestinian Islamist political movement. Hummus is a food.”
But Cohen went on: “Ya, but why hummus? Yesterday I threw away my pitta bread because it was dripping hummus. And it’s too high in carbohydrates.”
The character also asked: “Why don’t you settle the conflict with a time share on the land?”
Other questions were “When will you Jews return the pyramids?” and “Why can’t Jews and Hindus get along?”
He also commented: “Your conflict is not so bad. Jennifer-Angelina is worse.”
The victims only twigged when Cohen made them hold hands for a crazy song about the war.
Alpher said: “We knew something ludicrous was happening but couldn’t quite figure it out.”
The sketch – filmed in Jerusalem’s Old City – will appear in Cohen’s new movie, due out next May.
How people don't guess who he is yet is crazy.

Gay Kiss Causes Crowd Riot At Suspected Baron Cohen ‘Bruno’ Prank
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Crowds in Arkansas came for the lure of cage fighting and $1 beer, but police say what they got instead was men ripping each others’ clothes off and kissing _ a stunt suspected of being orchestrated by Sacha Baron Cohen of “Borat” fame.
“We had a contract for cage fighting. We were deceived,” said Dwight Duncan, president and CEO of Four States Fair Grounds in Texarkana, where the first of two Arkansas fights raised suspicions last month.
Matt Labov, a Los Angeles-based publicist for Baron Cohen, said he had no comment Monday about the faked fights. One of Baron Cohen’s movies is due out next year.
The day after the June 5 Texarkana bout, Fort Smith’s convention center hosted “Blue Collar Brawlin.’” Fort Smith police Sgt. Adam Holland said organizers told him a character named “Straight Dave” would goad a planted audience member into the ring for a fight.
The two men would then wrestle, rip away some of their clothes and share a brief kiss reminiscent of one between Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell in the film “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.”
Producers said “there would be a romantic embrace,” Holland said. “They said it was kind of to essentially make fun, poke fun at wrestling _ two guys rolling around on the floor, all sweaty.”
An elaborate array of mounted and handheld video cameras caught the crowd of 1,600’s reaction as the two men “went right up to the line” of the city’s morality laws, Holland said. The two men stripped down to their underwear, kissed and rubbed on each other, the sergeant said.
The audience, as well as local fighters drawn to take part in the show, became enraged. “It set the crowd off lobbing beers,” Holland said. “They had beers in plastic cups. Those things can get some distance on them actually.”
Holland said it took officers about 45 minutes to clear the convention center, as the two actors sprinted away through a specially set-aside tunnel
This sounds hilarious

Bruno Crashes NBC’s Medium
Shooting of NBC’s Medium was temporarily shut down on Nov. 7 when Bruno aka Sacha Baron Cohen kept interrupting a tense courtroom scene involving series star Patricia Arquette.
“No one had a clue it was Sacha playing Bruno,” a Medium insider told Ausiello. “It’s amazing he was able to infiltrate the set and pull this off.”
“It remains unclear whether Cohen (or one of his accomplices) snuck a video camera onto the Medium set to capture all of the tomfoolery, or whether he’s relying on the show’s producer, Paramount, to voluntarily hand over the unused footage. (The scene ended up being re-shot.),” Ausiello reported.
The day before the election, Bruno crashed a Los Angeles rally in support of Proposition 8, the measure to ban gay marriage approved by Californians this month.

Must … resist … urge … to … wax … hyperbolically. … Failure … appears … imminent. A jaw-on-the-floor wow. Sacha Baron Cohen has done it again, delivering another WMD slam dunk of hysterically subversive mocku-comedy.
Universal Pictures screened 22 minutes of “Brüno” during the SXSW Fantastic Fest. In the movie, Cohen assumes the character of the flamboyantly gay Austrian TV reporter from his famed “Da Ali G Show,” and from what we could tell from those glorious and deliciously wrong-yet-oh-so-right clips, Cohen has pushed the button to push all buttons. The stakes are higher, and Cohen seems to be flirting with a more dangerous powder keg of humor, the likes of which we’ve never seen before.
“Brüno” somehow makes “Borat” look like child’s play, upping the ante on Cohen’s aggressively offensive, squirm-worthy hilarity. With a recorded introduction by Cohen himself, the transgressive, outrageous and, at times, stunning footage was broken up into three sections: baby interviews, a fake Jerry Springer-like Texas-based talk show and the Ultimate Fighting Championship face-off (more on these in a sec). In describing each scene, the comedian revealed much of the film’s plot. He also noted that all the gut-busting scenes were being shown in a longer form than they would be in the final theatrical version (i.e. with more painfully prolonged exposure to uncomfortably uproarious funniness than doctors would normally recommend).
From what we can recall — our minds being blown and all — Cohen’s Brüno character is fired from his job for blowing an Italian fashion-show segment. Distraught, he goes to Hollywood in the hopes of becoming the “most famous Austrian star since Adolf Hitler.” As already rumored, in an attempt to fit in with Tinseltown celebrities, Brüno and his boyfriend/assistant David adopt a baby from Africa, which Brüno carries around to appear chic and trendy (a move that seems intended to dis the Madonnas of the world). At some point in the film, Brüno and David split up and he loses custody of the child. Depressed, he tries to reinvent himself as the most aggressively heterosexual man in America to regain custody.
1. The baby interviews: Brüno wants to create an elaborate photo shoot for his newly adopted baby and auditions mothers interested in having their babies appear in the shoot. Interviewing a host of parents, he asks if the babies would be comfortable working with animals ranging from bees to Komodo dragons to snakes. So desperate are the parents to have their children cast, they agree to all of his ludicrous suggestions. Would the babies be OK with being “thrown from a building”? Would they be at ease around “amateur science”? Would the child be comfortable speeding around in an automobile without a car seat? Could they just “wing it”? The mothers consistently reply that each task would be fine. Brüno even suggests to one mother that her 30-pound baby should lose 10 pounds within seven days, and she replies that this is doable. She even suggests that she would consider lipsocution if the baby should fail to lose the weight. Brüno then congratulates the winning mother and tells her that the baby will be dressed up as a Nazi pushing a Jewish baby into an oven. And you thought Borat pushed buttons? “Brüno” obliterates the button with wicked aplomb.
2. The Texas-based talk show “Today With Richard Bay”: Brüno appears on a Jerry Springer-like talk show to flaunt his new baby to a mostly African-American audience. He baits the females in the audience, telling them he can get any black man he wants and can easily steal their men. The comedy and anger seem to rise in tandem. After taunting the audience with voguing, posing and boasts of homosexual prowess, Brüno eventually brings on his baby, O.J. (as in Simpson), dressed in little cut-leather chaps and a black T-shirt that has “Gayby” written on it. The audience is aghast when he claims that the baby is a “real dick magnet” and was traded in Africa for an iPod, but a special, pimped-out version — “not just any old iPod,” he assures them. The coup de grace is a clearly Photoshopped (thank heavens) photo session of gay hot-tub antics with the baby in tow. The segment ends with the State Child’s Service Department coming in and taking the “illegally” adopted child into protective custody. The Austrian has to fight off security in a hysterical rage.
3. The Ultimate Fighting Championship face-off: At this point in the film, Cohen’s once ostentatiously homosexual reporter has turned militaristically heterosexual and has created a UFC-like show called “Dave’s MAX Out,” giving us our first peek at Straight Dave, the newly invented Brüno. Mustachioed, hirsute and decked out in camouflage gear and an outback hat, Straight Dave parades around the ring to AC/DC’s “Back in Black,” while male spectators cheer him on. This is the gay-loathing party to end all gay-loathing parties. Of course, Straight Dave’s uüber-machismo does a 180 right into homoerotic overtones, but this goes over every audience member’s head as SD rips female stagehands’ clothing to reveal skimpy bikinis.
Then the footage takes a spectacular turn for the worse (better). Think of the scene in “Borat” in which Cohen sings the National Anthem at a Virginia rodeo to an audience that is with him initially and calling for his blood by the end. Brüno is suddenly called out during his show as a “f—-t,” and an appalled Straight Dave challenges the person who yelled that to step into the ring and fight him. We’re not really meant to know who his challenger is, but clearly, it’s his ex-boyfriend. They violently fight, pummeling each other bloody, but eventually the former couple, as you can probably guess, patches things up, passionately making out and groping each other to the sounds of Elton John’s “Can You Feel the Love Tonight.” It is a sensational moment in cinema not to be forgotten soon. Of course, the outraged audience freaks out, and one glorious slow-motion shot captures an overzealous red-faced fan crying.
The footage ended with Cohen addressing the audience one last time, asking if we liked what we’d seen. If so, “buy a f—ing ticket.” The film’s take-no-prisoners approach was breathlessly funny, but no doubt some will ask: Has Sacha Baron Cohen gone too far? “Brüno” hits theaters July 10.

Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno Gets an NC-17 Rating!
March 29, 2009
Source: The Wrap
by Alex Billington
Somehow, by some miracle, Sacha Baron Cohen and Fox were able to get the MPAA to allow a 3-minute naked fight scene between two brutally ugly men slide by as R rated in Borat in 2006. But apparently they MPAA is not being so lenient this time. The Wrap is reporting that Bruno, or more accurately titled Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Male, has been slapped with an NC-17 rating by the MPAA on its first pass. Obviously they're going to edit some of the overly sexual scenes so that it can get an R rating by the time it hits theaters in July. But so far this is some good news!
Apparently there are "numerous sexual scenes that the ratings board considers over the line." One of them involves Bruno appearing to have "anal sex with a man on camera." In the other, Bruno "goes on a hunting trip and sneaks naked into the tent of one of the fellow hunters," who, as we know, is one of Sacha Baron Cohen's unsuspecting victims caught on camera. So why is this good news? Because as ludicrous and awesome as Borat was, it sounds like Bruno is going to kick things up another notch, especially in the sexual department. Did anyone really think that Cohen would be able to top that 3-minute naked fight scene?
Apparently Borat got an NC-17 rating on its first pass, too, so this isn't exactly too shocking to hear. And considering Cohen has a little over 3 more months to finish editing this and get an R rating, it's likely we'll hear that it finally got the MPAA stamp of approval sooner than later. With this news, and all that I heard about the crazy footage shown at SXSW, it's easy to say that I truly am excited for Bruno this summer!

I didn't think anything could top the naked bedroom fight in Borat, but it looks he is going to top it with this movie!
he is a nutter!!
But yeah, I guess he had no choice but to go with that new hairdo to sort of hide his face a bit more.
In the old shows, he used to have a mohawk, and used to trawl the fashion shows.
I don't know how he has managed to get enough material for a movie, especially since a lot more people know who he is now since Borat.
The make out session during a wrestling match is sure to cause controversy!
lol!

I'm especially looking forward to the part where Bruno, at a point in the movie where he's apparently trying to go straight and in doing so prove his manliness, signs up for a 'UFC' style fight. He calls himself something like 'Bruno: the gay basher' or something and his opponent is actually a gay figher. Of course, what the crowd dont know is that the fighter is actually Bruno's ex-partner.
What starts off as an MMA fight quickly turns into a live gay sex show in front of a crowd of very, very angry spectators; this is the one that almost imfamously sparked a riot.
Should be an abolute hoot.

Another thing that grates me is that Bruno was actually an awesome character. I remember when I first saw the character on Sacha's skit show and he was hilarious. But it was the same deal as Borat, with Sacha just taking the piss with halarious interviews and situational comedy. Maybe that's what scared Sacha, he felt he had to differentiate between Borat and Bruno so he went turbo on the gross rather than the intelligence with Bruno.

It was funny, I enjoyed it though not enough shocking moments as Borat but still funny and of course it's not exactly a sequel of sorts since it's an entirely different character.
The funny bits were:
The whole focus group scene with Bruno's penis on display and Harrison Ford telling Bruno to 'eff' off.
Bruno's little chinese boyfriend and the both of them pleasing each other with the penis pump and the mechanical dildo.
it was also rather a short movie, I was expecting maybe 100 minutes length run.
I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

There are alot of hilarious moments but some things don't transition well. Also because more is scripted , you think something really crazy is about to happen but it winds down.
Most people just tell him to eff off or go away. It's not as big on social commentary it's more about shock value.

Yeah I was busting guts in this. That said, I don't think I liked it as much as Borat. Borat was really under the level smartsy type of stuff. At times anyway, this was just dick dick dick. More dick. Black dildo dick.
The dickhole talking was pretty lawly though, heh. Favorite scene hands down is the martial arts mullet master and his dildo defence lesson. Oh my god.:oldrazz:
Just got back from seeing this, my stomach was hurting at a few scenes from laughing so hard. I don't think it's better than Borat, but as funny to say the least. Great stuff and "wow" at what you can put in an R rated movie these days :funny:

I live in Alabama and about an hour from Cullman County where the hunters where supposed to be from. People ate that up.
The weird part is the only time our crowd was shocked/silent would've been when Bruno was asking that one mom about what her kid could/would do for the park. The losing weight talk actually got gasps lol...
enjoyed it a lot. the wife enjoyed it too
EDIT: Also this was crazy. Guess how many times I had to show my ID? 3 times.
We get to the window he asks for my ID I show him he gives me my tickets then warns me of how bad this movie is. Why not warn me before I buy the ticket? So then we stand in line and it says Bruno now seating, so I hand the lady my ticket she doesnt tear it but ask for ID, I show her and she says "walk down to theater 8 and see him" *points to a cop* I walk down he is standing next to the door to go in. He asks to see my ticket and my id..i hand him both, he tears my ticket and looks at id and from what I was told he was stationed there the entire movie to keep kids from coming in.

Plenty of walk-outs during the movie tonight. As for the movie itself, eh...kinda disappointing. I expected a lot more than SBC than exposing some toothless Southerners as homophobes. It was just a lot of recycled material that, when compared to Borat, isn't all that funny. It did have its moments, but the bad outweighed the good, I say. 5/10 for me.

By the way, I noticed a lot of scenes from the commercials & trailers were cut. The one that stics out is Bruno & Lutz chained together at a mall and Bruno telling a store employee that he's gay. I know this kinda thing happens in films, but these were 2 scenes that were in pretty heavy rotation prior to its release.
A group of about 5 people left half way into it and never came back. That's what kind of amazes me, I mean if they went into Brüno knowing what Borat (2006) was all about, then I don't know why they'd walk out on his more particularly vulgar alter ego Bruno, like c'mon :funny: Did you think he was gonna hold back at all? :hehe: Or were you really not "offended" by anything in Borat to begin with? I was weary of seeing it based on what I've been hearing, but I gave it a shot because I generally think Cohen is funny (never saw Ali G but I liked him in Talladega Nights, Sweeney Todd, and Borat), and I liked it.
I liked it for the exact opposite reasons that I'm sure many did though. I find it quite amusing that some actually think this film makes a strong statement about prejudice and homophobia; as though it's really out of line to resent the behavior of someone that publically shoves their sexuality in your face to the point of dropping their pants in front of you and rubbing their crotch up against someone that's obviously not interested.
and saying things like "that baby looks retarded, either give it up or abort it," and having a bunch of typical whiney liberals talk about what an important issue global warming is when they clearly don't have a freaking clue what they're talking about...
Most of the responses to Bruno's sexuality and overall demeaner, sans the most extreme examples where he has to go to the most blatantly hateful parts of the country to find, are just natural reactions to obviously crude, inappropriate behavior.
I'd have found this film more offensive if I were gay person, or an extreme liberal, since that's who's made to look foolish here.
Not sure if it's quite as funny as Borat or not, it comes closer than I expected though.

Yeah, that scene is a perfect EXTREME example; that's why I said that the film only succeeds at what it intends in the most EXTREME cases. This movie had some pretty funny parts to be sure, but the plot (what little there was) felt a bit recycled from Borat. Towards the end I thought the social satire got better, but in the first half of the film it was all about shocking people. I would have prefered more of what we got in the last half of the film. 6/10.
I was weary of seeing it based on what I've been hearing, but I gave it a shot because I generally think Cohen is funny (never saw Ali G but I liked him in Talladega Nights, Sweeney Todd, and Borat), and I liked it.

I think you're both right, to an extent. Bruno was far more abrassive than Borat. I think even the most liberal straight person in the world would become upset if someone like Bruno walked up to them and started rubbing against them or taking off their pants and trying to have sex with them. I mean, hell, even those hunters were fairly tolerant (albeit, uncomfortable) until Bruno tried to enter their tent naked. On the other hand, there was also a lot of prejuidice that Bruno displayed without trying too hard. Still, in the end, I think the difference between Bruno and Borat is that Borat threw fuel into fires that were already lit where as Bruno created entirely new fires.
