Plus the cops will no doubt be out in force. It's not going to turn into Whyte Ave in Edmonton or anything...

I don't even think Whyte Ave got as bad as Montreal last night. I mean we didn't set any police cars on fire

So I ran across a strange news item today. It is being reported by Women's Wear Daily (the fashion bible) that New York Ranger Sean Avery will be spending his summer...interning at Vogue Magazine.

Beats golf I guess?

I'm really looking forward to San Jose/Calgary Game 7. The whole series has been great so this game seven should top Montreal/Boston and Philadelphia/Washington.

We didn't beat the Canadiens at all in the regular season, but the games were pretty close. I think the series could go to 6 or 7 games as well. I hope we win and meet the Penguins in the ECF for the battle of PA.

Still great to see the Flames go down. 3 straight 1st round exits for the Flames. All the bandwagon fans who jumped on during the '04 run have had nothing but playoff misery. Sutter stepped down because he couldn't balance being GM and coach and "that's why the Flames were eliminated" in 2006. Jim Playfair, Sutter's assistant, wasn't a tough enough coach so he was fired though was supposed to be the right man. Iron Mike was brought in to be tough and get past the first round. Well what's next Sutter?

Could you tell me how the Flyers got a break with the refs? The Caps got so many questionable calls earlier in the series, but I didn't see anyone say anything about that. Plus, in that OT, Kapanen was clearly tripped and the refs didn't call it. So when Umberger got tripped there by Poti, the refs had no choice to call it, since they missed the other one. If there's anyone to blame for the Caps losing in OT, it's the Caps. Give the Flyers some damn credit.

If Biron was here right now, I would kiss his ass. He played absolutely fantastic. And it hasn't just been Biron dude. What about Danny Briere. That guy is living up to his contract and being the playoff performer we all expected him to be. And Mike Richards is showing why he will be captain next year, because Jason Smith ain't coming back next year. It's a great time to be a Flyers fan. Yeah, the Caps dominated that 3rd period last night, but they couldn't get it done and the Flyers stuck it out. Yeah, the Flyers gave up the 3-1 series lead, but they regrouped and won the series. All the momentum was with the Caps and they couldn't do it. There was no giving up by Flyers. At least I get to see my team play for at least 4 more games. Should be an interesting series with the Canadiens. Boston has definitely revealed some of their vulnerabilities.

The goal by Kapenen in the 2nd. The Flyers player pushing the Capitals player into Huet to knock him out of the crease! That should've been goalie interference or incidental contact. No goal either way. TSN showed footage during the intermission where "incidental contact" cancelled out a goal between the Lighting and Capitals.
A Lightning player was nudged into his own goalie, time passed and a goal was scored. But refs said there was incidental contact, no goal. Last night's was 10x worse.
If what happened earlier in the last half of the season was deemed incidental contact, then what happened with Huet should've cancelled the goal. Non call by the ref.
If it was the other way around with Ovechkin pushing Thoreson into Biron while Biron was in the crease, creating an empty net to get scored on, this board would be full of complaints.

Flyers got the job done in OT but that 2nd goal was a major blown call by the refs.

The Jets had (playoff) rivalries with the Canucks, Flames and Oilers - so I went with the Senators, the one Canadian team that the Jets had zero history with.

Honestly, the Kapanen goal could of been called either way. It's a matter of opinion on the ref on that one. I guess the ref saw that Thoreson was taking out his man and the Caps defenseman was knocked into his own goalie. That **** happens all the time and I seen it called both ways before. It's all of a matter of opinion. I watched analysts last night saying it was a good call by the refs for allowing the play to continue and some said they play should of been called dead. But hey, you take them when you can get them. But some of you have to admit the Flyers got questionable calls throughout the series against them. I especially like Ovechkin's diving in game 1, which wasn't called at all. But they call diving on Upshall in game 6, when it clearly wasn't. He was already falling and the ref said it was diving because he snapped his head back a little. Give me a break. The refs have been terrible all year for all teams and these playoffs haven't been any different. The league needs to fix this.

1st Round Heroes

With two big goals and two assists in the San Jose Sharks' decisive Game 7 victory over the Calgary Flames Tuesday night, veteran forward Jeremy Roenick emerged as perhaps the unlikeliest of playoff heroes.

It wasn't so long ago that Roenick had been forced into semi-retirement, before eventually signing on with a talented Sharks team to provide some veteran leadership. Relegated to the press box as a healthy scratch in Game Six, Roenick might have become an afterthought for the Sharks.

Instead, Roenick stepped up and helped propel the Sharks into the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

"I didn't expect to have a feeling this good," Roenick told the Mercury News. "I just wanted to come back to contribute and be a guy who helps the kids. I don't want to say I'm surprised. But it's a real nice feeling."

"I texted him (Monday) night and told him that I was going to rely on him heavily, and he was all excited about that," coach Ron Wilson said. "Did I expect him to get four points? No, maybe a chip in or do something on the power play. But he's got a lot of poise."

Roenick was just one of many that stepped up for their teams during the first round. TSN takes a look back at some of the other playoff heroes that emerged during the first round of the playoffs. Don't forget to tune in to TSN tonight at 7pm et/4pm pt for a special Second Round preview edition of Molson That's Hockey.

Montreal Canadiens

First-year goaltender Carey Price has had an up-and-down start to his playoff career. He began with two stellar performances in Games One and Two of the Habs' series with the Boston Bruins - giving up just three goals total on 57 shots. But Price stumbled slightly in Games Five and Six, giving up 10 goals combined.

When it mattered most, though, Price shut the door; making 25 saves to blank the Bruins in Game 7. In his typically understated fashion, Price showed the same poise after the game that he displays between the pipes.

"It's the playoffs - games can go either way," Price told the Canadian Press following the Game 7 win. "You can't get too high or low. I know that's an old cliché, but that's how it is.

"We all felt we had to play better and we did."

Philadelphia Flyers

After years of disappointments as a member of the Buffalo Sabres, Daniel Briere showed the talent that made Philadelphia decide to sign him to a long-term deal this past off-season. Briere stepped up against Washington and leads the entire NHL in playoff scoring with six goals and five assists.

It's not just theoffence. Briere has elevated his overall play as well, finishing the series +2 after being a -22 during the regular season. Briere proved to be the kind of rock the Flyers needed, especially after Washington stormed back to tie the series 3-3.

"There's been times when this group had a chance to fold, to give up, basically, and we keep coming back up. The confidence keeps growing, and it's a very positive thing," Briere told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh didn't really need a hero in it's first round sweep of the Ottawa Senators. Everyone from Sidney Crosby to Evgeni Malkin to Marc-Andre Fleury elevated their game to defeat a clearly overmatched Senators' squad.

But for one Penguin, this series was a moment of vindication. Often-labeled as a player who can score during the regular season, but then disappears during the playoffs, Marian Hossa put forth a performance that should, at least for the moment, silence his critics.

With five points and a team-high 24 shots, Hossa proved to be an excellent addition to Crosby's wing. As Pittsburgh hoped, the trade deadline-acquisition added even more firepower to already potent Penguin attack.

New York Rangers

Love him or hate him, no player had as much impact on the New York Rangers/New Jersey Devils' series as super-pest Sean Avery.

Avery was solid offensively, scoring five points while notching three goals, including the game-winner in Game Two. But Avery truly left his mark by throwing Devils' goaltender Martin Brodeur off his game.

From crashing the crease with reckless abandon to (in)famously waving his stick in front of Brodeur's face on the power play, Avery was the key reason why the Rangers are preparing to play the Penguins in the second round.

Despite his actions, TSN analyst Bob McKenzie noted that, "he's a very good hockey player."

Detroit Red Wings

With two quick victories in Detroit, the Red Wings appeared to be cruising in their first-round match up with the Nashville Predators.

But Detroit hit a speed bump when they traveled to Nashville. The Wings lost Game Three and starting goaltender Dominik Hasek looked particularly shaky in Game Four, giving up three goals on just 14 shots.

Backup goalie Chris Osgood was called in and he did a stellar job steadying the team. The Wings would win the next games and the series, as Osgood faced 54 shots but gave up just one goal the rest of the way.

"Ozzie came in and was solid, he was real poised," said Red Wings coach Mike Babcock following the series.

Colorado Avalanche

Tuning into the Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild series, you couldn't be blamed if you thought you were watching the 1998 version of the Avalanche, not the 2008 one.

Long-time Avalanche veterans Peter Forsberg, five points, and Adam Foote, 23 minutes a game, were playing playoff-caliber hockey and showing the way for younger players like Wojtek Wolski and David Jones.

But the Avalanche's true hero was 18-year veteran Joe Sakic.

Sakic set the tone early by scoring a game-winning goal in the overtime period of Game One. Sakic led the team in scoring with six points and was a force the entire series.

Dallas Stars

Overshadowed by the Anaheim Ducks' collapse was the stellar play of Stars' goaltender Marty Turco.

When Mike Smith was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning at the trade deadline, some questioned whether the Stars had kept the right goalie.

Compounding the pressure, was the fact that Turco has taken a lot criticism for Dallas' past first-round flameouts in 2004, '06 and '07.

Against Anaheim, Turco posted a sparkling 2.01 goals-against-average and a .912 save percentage. Turco has worked hard to erase those doubts and is the backbone of Stars team that is looking to make a long run in the playoffs.

"For all we've been through, we talk about doing what we're capable of and not just one series. We want to win it all. That's why it's been so disappointing over the years," Turco told the Canadian Press.

While I agree with you that the Rangers are EXTREMELY underrated, I believe that this series will be a long one that will go back and forth... but I think the Pens playoff series win against Ottawa has given them the added spark they need to take it to the Conferance Finals.

The refs have straight up ****ed the Flyers in the ass tonight. How was that not a high stick on Kovalev's goal? And Mike Richards took that guy out with a clean shoulder, not with his legs. Event he replay shows it. I'm disgusted. it's further proof that the NHL hates the Flyers.

The Flyers won't lose the series, the refs will win it for the Habs.

This kind of officiating has been going on for years.

I love the NHL's reasoning for allowing Kovalev's goal.

Hot Dog? Or Skilled Hockey Player?

Whether he deserved the 'A' and/or the 'C' is irrelevant because it wasn't his decision to give it to him.

Coming into the league with the HUGE pressure for him to be the Next One and to help the league draw new fans after the lockout must have been tremendous on him, and it also made him a target for every goon that he plays against, so I cut him some slack when he "loses" it once in a while because he comports himself far better than you and I ever could under such circumstances.

Again, his commercials are not by his design, and they are no better than the retarded commercials that Gretzky was in... Ugh... :whatever:

Hot Dog. HNIC has shown enough footage that he has skill but is still a hot dog.

He could have turned down the A and C. You know, actually earn them like Ovechkin (who still isn't Captain) and earn some respect by turning them down saying he didn't deserve them yet. That's why in the first season he didn't get the protection from the veterans because he was not respected by everyone on his team.
Just because in the future he would become the captain doesn't mean he should have gotten it right away.

Never said they were better than Gretzky's commercials. But he doesn't seem to say no, I have some dignity, I have enough money from RBK and the Penguins alone.

You can't take him serious with his teenager facial hair. He looks like he's some douchebag in grade 10.

Just from interviews, I just don't like the guy.

I can't believe how well the Stars are playing right now. Brad Richards has that "it" factor that certain athletes have when it comes to performing in the playoffs. He has been awesome and he's justified the trade deadline deal the Stars made to get him. It's not over yet but I'm pleasantly surprised by the Star's effort effort so far. With the way the Mavs and Rangers are playing right now, it's nice to have something positive to root for in this town.

San Jose's struggles and Dallas' strong play have definitely been the surprises of the playoffs. All they had to do was fire the GM and the Richards trade. Young defense is doing well, Turco has been great and enough scoring.

First Detroit was the dominant team in the West, then it was Dallas, then San Jose, with Dallas looking like the odd team out in the Pacific Division.

Flyers win game 4. Marty Biron has to start stepping up in the third quarter. It seems like when we have a good 2 goal lead we let it slip away. If he can't step it up, there's no way we beat Pittsburgh if we play them in the next round.

I'm sorry, but I don't think Biron deserves blame for when the Flyers give up these leads. They're not playing solid defense by giving up all these shots and getting in penalty trouble makes even harder for your goalie to play great. Marty has been absolutely fantastic and is the reason why the Flyers are up 3-1.

I'm not blaming just Biron. The whole team deserves the blame for the leads slipping away. Marty has been fantastic thorugh the playoffs, but I honestly think he needs to step it up a notch if we want to beat Pittsburgh. Then the offense will take care of itself.

I know he's been playing fine, but Pittsburgh isn't just gonna roll over and stop scoring goals. 12 goals in thier last 3 games. It's going to be a challenge for Biron. If we get called for the stupid penalties and Pittsburgh goes on the PP, that's where Biron has to step up. The Flyers have scored 11 goals in their last 3 games. If we stop making the stupid penalties and play defense, we can win this series in 6.

Buffalo Sabres GM Darcy Rieger should be fired. He put together two great teams after the lockout, ones that could have gone to the Finals but made major mistakes in the past year.

I think a Pittsburgh/Detroit Finals would be really good for a few reasons.

A. The Red Wings 20 year reign atop the NHL against the team that may reign for the NEXT 20 Years.

B. Crosby/Malkin vs Datysuk/Zetterberg. WOW. It's not Lemieux/Jagr vs Gretzky/Messier but it's pretty damn good.

C. Chris Osgood. Hey, this guy is playing for the Hall of Fame. Experts are saying if the Red Wings can win it all he should get heavy consideration.

D. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the first of 2 or 3 Pittsburgh/Detroit finals in the next 5 years.

This finals would kick so much ass which means.... we won't get it. Just like we didn't get New England/Indianapolis and Green Bay/Dallas in the NFL Conference Championships.

Terrible news for the Flyers and Timonen:

Timonen out for playoffs with blood clot

By Tim Panaccio
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen was diagnosed with a blood clot in his left ankle today. He will be out for the remainder of the playoffs. The diagnosis was made at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Timonen said.
"I got hit with a shot in Game 4 against Montreal," said Timonen, 33. "It's been getting sorer and sorer every day. We thought we'd get it checked out because it didn't get better and they found a blood clot.
"This was just an awful day for me. I played in Game 5 in Montreal, but it was really hurting me. I have to be honest: I didn't expect this result. How many times in your life do you get a chance to play for this, with a chance to go to the Stanley Cup Finals? This is just awful."
Timonen did not make the trip to Pittsburgh for tomorrow's start of the Eastern Conference finals against the Penguins.
The Flyers plan an announcement later tonight.
"We're still trying to get more information," said general manager Paul Holmgren.
Timonen is the club's best defenseman. He was expected to play against the Penguins' dangerous Evgeni Malkin in the series. His loss could have a huge impact on the Flyers' chances.

Yeah, it really should be a good Finals - perhaps the first of many Detroit/Pittsburgh Finals.

I, for one, would not be at all surprised to see these two teams meet in the Finals for three of the next five years.

Detroit has a good team, but there will be questions around goaltending for the next few years...

I think Hasek's days are numbered... the guy is what? 43? That's an incredible age to be still playing in the NHL, especially at that position... he's still great, but I can't see him keeping it up.

And Osgood, who practically took away the #1 goalie status in these playoffs, will be 36 at the begining of next season, so he'll start declining in a few years...

So the possibility of Detroit's future heavily depends on the depth they have in goal in the minors, or if they can trade for a quality starter.

The consensus opinion is that they will go after FA Ryan Miller after next season. He is a Michigan native so I guess it makes sense.

We've seen how great Buffalo has been with holding onto their stars for the past ten years...

This is awesome! It is really looking like the Pens are going to go to the finals. I am hoping for a Detroit/Pittsbugh final. They have been the best teams from the start of the tourny. Lets Go Pens!

Timonen to Skate on Friday
All-star defenseman gets good news from doctor
Kevin Kurz | philadelphiaflyers.com
May 15, 2008, 11:44 PM EDT

(Philadelphia, PA) – Flyers defenseman Kimmo Timonen (http://flyers.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=PlayerDetail&playerId=8459670), who has missed the last four games against Pittsburgh with a blood clot in his left foot, could return on Sunday when the Flyers and Penguins play Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Mellon Arena (3:00 p.m., NBC).

Timonen explained his situation following the Flyers’ 4-2 win on Thursday night (http://flyers.nhl.com/playoffs/2008/flyers_penguins.htm).

“I’m going to skate tomorrow. I met [Dr. Ronald Fairman] today and we took another ultrasound. Based on that, the doctor said I have a green light to give it a try. That’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to skate [Friday] and see how it feels.

“The doctor feels that there is no chance the clot is going to get loose or break up or anything like that. It’s a great sign. A week ago they were afraid it was going to get bigger and cut loose. I’ve been on blood thinners now for eight days and we’ll see how it goes.”

Timonen, who said he is in no pain, will skate on his own as the team will most likely have the day off from practice.

“If I feel tomorrow that I’m good to go for Sunday, then I’m good for Sunday,” he said. “There is nothing to prevent me from playing. I may have numbness in my toes, but if I can deal with that then I can play.

“I just want to make sure I can help the team and not hurt them.”

In 12 games in the playoffs, Timonen has six assists and a +5 rating.

That was an embarrassing lost by the Flyers. They seem to have a knack for getting blown out in series clinching games. Regardless of the lost, it was a great season for the orange and black. I never expected them to get as far as they did and it was a great ride. The future looks bright for this team.
